Dear Friends,

The Pilgrim Course

The Pilgrim’s Way runs through our parishes, one of the routes

where medieval travellers made their way to Canterbury

Cathedral to pray at the shrine of St .Thomas Becket. A

Pilgrimage was a kind of religious holiday, a journey in the

company of others which was also a process of self-discovery,

change and growth.

‘Pilgrim’ is the name of a new Church of England course

which is being followed in churches all over the country.

We are starting our first Pilgrim Course in this parish. It is a

group for enquirers and new Christians who want to learn

more about the Christian faith. The ethos of the group will be

one where we learn and grow together.

The group will meet on Sunday afternoons in All Saints’

Church, Wouldham at 4pm starting on Sunday 27th July. The

initial commitment is for 6 weeks, though there will be an

opportunity to continue with further sessions later on. Each

session will last up to 90 minutes.

The group is for any of the following people:

- Those who want the chance to think about the Christian faith

- Those who have recently started coming to church

- Those preparing for baptism or confirmation

The group will be led by Mike Hayes and Gwen Worcester.

For more information please contact either of them by phone

or email or speak to them in church.

Please pass on news about this group to anyone whom you

think might be interested.

In peace, Mike

REPAIRS TO ALL SAINTS CHURCH, WOULDHAM

Over the centuries, repairs have

constantly been needed to All

Saints Church, Wouldham to

maintain it as the beautiful parish

church that it is and on into the

future.

Church of England churches are

inspected every five years to

ensure that they are safe and in a

good state of repair and we were pleased to receive a good report saying

that we have looked after our church well. However, wear and tear has

taken its toll as it has done over the centuries. Now there are repairs

needed to the guttering, stonework and woodwork by specialist

stonemasons and craftsmen.

Parishioners have been generously donating to the repair fund year by

year at our fundraising events but an amount in the range of £40,000 is

still required to complete the repairs. If you can make a donation (no

matter how small) it would mean we can keep our beautiful, old and

historic church standing for many more years to come and appreciated by

everyone.

Donations by cheque are payable to ‘Burham and Wouldham PCC’.

Please contact one of the Church Wardens if you can ‘Gift Aid’ as this is

appreciated. If you want to donate cash, envelopes are be provided.

THE PEW CUSHION PROJECT AT ALL SAINTS CHURCH

This project is proceeding well and anyone interested in joining the

needle workers will be very welcome. We are working tapestry cushions

for the pews in memory of loved ones. The finished cushion will carry a

permanent label with the name of the donor and/or to whom it is

dedicated together with the name of the person who has worked the

cushion. Contributors will be contacted when their cushion is ready and

informed at which Service it will be dedicated.

Each cushion costs £170 which covers materials for one pew cushion

only. Sharing the cost with others who have

expressed an interest is possible so contributions

over £30 are gratefully received. The cushions are

worked by volunteers as it is a non-profit making

activity. Can you help by making a donation to the scheme? Thank you.

Would you like to learn flower arranging?

There will be a workshop in All Saints' Church in

the autumn. Come along and learn with professional

tuition. The arrangements will be to decorate the

church for that week. Anyone who enjoys the

workshop is welcome to be on the rota for arranging

flowers in church but there is no obligation or

commitment to doing this!

If you did want to though, it could be as often or as

little as you wish. For example some people like to arrange flowers once

a year on a date that is special to them, or some people may particularly

like to help at Christmas or Easter. This course is open to all, not just

people who attend church services. We hope it will be an enjoyable

session for any men or women who take part.

Please email or phone Mike to register an interest. Date to be announced.

WOULDHAM PARISH COUNCIL NEWS

WOULDHAM PRIMARY SCHOOL –

The school has received some positive news from company Laing

O’Rourke who have offered to provide the school with 30 man days

free labour. Thank you to Laing O’Rourke for providing this wonderful

opportunity for the school to get many jobs done around the school.

PETERS VILLAGE:

The Parish Council agreed to support the Wouldham Village Commit-

tee’s report on Peters Village at its meeting in June. This is being sent to

Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council for their consideration by the

Committee and is available to read the Parish website. We have also writ-

ten to KCC to suggest width restrictions are placed along Hall Road to

prevent lorries using this route. Please keep a look at the Parish Council

website for information on Peters Village. All official updates received

from Trenport will be put on the website. Alternatively, if you have

any questions, contact the Parish Clerk.

DOG POO –

Once again this seems to be a big problem in the village. It is a difficult

issue to tackle without any evidence of the offenders. If you have any in-

formation on people with dogs who are not respecting the village and

clearing up after their dog, please contact the Dog Warden on 01732

844522 or email at [email protected]. The Dog Warden will act

upon any reports received and they will be treated in confidence.

THE WOULDHAM PROJECT –

the fundraising committee are working very hard on looking at a num-

ber of projects to raise funds for the new village hall. The campaign is

now known as ‘The Wouldham Project’. Resident Neil Hepden recently

won the logo design competition for the project. Well done Neil with

coming up with a brilliant design for this. The project needs the help of

Wouldham residents for its fundraising activities and events to make this

a success. If you can help with anything from making cakes to helping set

up for events or provide a donation for future prizes, you can contact the

group at [email protected] plus see what they are up to on

their new website – www.wouldhamproject.org.uk.

FROM BURUNDI, AFRICA TO BURHAM & WOULDHAM

My dear sister, Heather and John, her

husband tell me that the weather in Burham

and Wouldham can be quite mild – but

compared with 32 degrees in Burundi it

seemed extremely cold. Fortunately the

over-head heaters in the church were doing a

good job when I came a couple of months ago

and so I could enjoy the service and

especially meeting old friends of mine and of

the needy in Burundi. Christians came to Bu-

rundi about 100 years ago so worshipping in a

wonderful and beautifully maintained church building was a big change.

I now associate Burham & Wouldham with warm-hearted people who have

collected clothes for babies and toddlers and other people, like May Culver and

family who have even been so generous with their time as to knit new garments

for babies and toddlers in Burundi. I wish you could see the expressions on the

faces of mothers – as in utter astonishment they hold up clothes and say “they

are actually NEW”. They have never handled anything ‘new’ before. Thank you

for the Christian love which you have expressed in this way.

Some of you remembered me bringing Claude to Burham – and his spontane-

ous singing of Christian songs at the village coffee morning. As he was Burun-

dian –even the English were not the slightest bit embarrassed by his enthusiasm!

At the moment I am trying to get sponsorship to start the “Burundian Christian

University”. People here are so poor

that often several families have to

unite to support one child through

secondary education; to go to

university is beyond their wildest

dreams.

If anyone wants to experience a

different culture and enjoy the

sun – do let me know. I have a guest

room awaiting you in the house I

rent in Bujumbura.

Christian greetings to you all.

BURHAM PARISH COUNCIL NEWS

At the May meeting, Councillor Dalton was nominated and accepted

the post of Chairman, with Councillor Stead as Vice-Chairman. War memorial gardens: We now have some quotes to consider and a

decision will probably have been made by the time this goes to print.

The official opening of the Parish Building took place in May, with

Tracey Crouch our local MP in attendance.

Great News: With the donations from local residents, we now have

enough funding to cover the cost of the housing of the defibrillator.

The Defibrillator has now been ordered and will be housed on the

wall of the parish building in due course. Our thanks to Dennis

Langridge, Dave Davis, Bill Stead, Jim Dowle, Tony Ford, Wendy

Neath, Roger Dalton, Richard Wood (Vale Bakery), Jack Laker and

Trenport Investments for their very generous donations. Not

forgetting of course Georgina Nicolettos, and Cardiac Science, our

sincere thanks to you all.

The reinstatement of the steps from the Village Hall overflow car park

and the main car park will now be going ahead. Work is due to commence

at the end of June. Grant funding has been secured via County Councillor

Homewood by the Village Hall Management Committee to assist with the

costs.

Trenport Investments: As hopefully you are all fully aware, work to Peter

Village Development is now underway. All residents received a

newsletter outlining the background and project target timeline. (Further

copies are available via the Parish Office).

We have received reports that low branches in the recreation ground

are being used as “swings” and consequently the branches are

breaking off. This is classed as anti-social behavior, so if you see

anything similar occurring or for that matter any anti-social behavior

within the village, either call 101 or let me know and I will report it

for you.

If you spot any highway matters that require attention, whether it be pot

holes, damaged pavements, overgrown footpaths or anything else

highway related, just give me a call and I will report it for you. If you’re

not sure if its highways or not, give me call anyway and as always, I’ll try

to assist. continued...
