More Than Great Food - A Great Group Twice a year the Liberty Ruritan Club holds a Fried Chicken and BBQ meal that you can eat in or take out. This happens same Saturday as the antique festival. This group of working souls my be small in number but big in heart. As you see this group of guys here pulled out some great fried chicken. If you would like to be part of this great come visit with them. They meet every Monday at 7:30 and is open to men and women of all ages. The Ruritan is a national organization dedicated to improving communities and building a better American through fellowship, goodwill and community service. That is exactly what this group does. If truly enjoy each time I get to meet with any of these Ruritan’s as they are great community oriented folks. Just one of their many things is keeping Liberty looking good. Through out the year they meet to keep Old 421 ( Greensboro St) cleaned up of litter. If you are looking to volunteer and be part of a great group , here is another great outlet

adopting animals so they have more space and are able to continue to provide a wonderful service to animals. I want everyone to know that there are a lot of sweet animals that live in the shelter and would love to have an

Start time will begin in possible waves at 9:00AM. Runners first, joggers, walkers, strollers, crawlers For each registration fee the participant will receive a T-shirt as a souvenir, not intended to wear in the event, optional. The front side will have a special designed logo of LVMG 5K Color Walk/Run. The back side will list participating sponsors helping to make this event possible. We request each participant wear light clothing to display the assortment of colors he or she accumulated during the event. Don't wear your best outfits, in some cases the color can be difficult to wash out. Each participant will receive an inexpensive pair of sunglass (shield your eyes from corn starch) a lanyard, bib with number, water and snacks will be available. Direction signs will be posted, the 5K Walk/Run route will begin in front of Liberty School on Fayetteville St, left Bowman, right on Greensboro St. right on Luther Ave continuing to Candlewood, Myrtle, Dogwood, Timber lea, Brookwood, Greenbriar, Butler, Fayetteville St. Brookwood, Greensboro St. and back to the start finish line, but not necessary in that order. The proposed streets are only an option at this time, changes and planning is still in progress. The course amenities are also still in the planning stages such as possible water hazards or welcomed sprinklers depending on your perception and air temperature that morning, designated areas filled with flying colored corn starch powder, (red, blue, green, yellow, etc) a person might even be ambushed by an attacker with water gun filled with colored water, discussion continues about possible obstacles for stepping through, crawling through, or crawling over, etc. Our objective is to make this run fun or everyone, with that being said, the course amenities are optional, if a person does not wish to be powdered or sprinkled or sprayed they may bypass the fun and proceed directly to the finish line, It's a participant's day to have fun in any way they wish as long as they have fun, and be safe. Each paid participant will receive a bag of colored powder (corn starch). This bag is intended to be tossed in the air simultaneously with all the other participants at the end of the event for a group photo. Additional bags of powder and t-shirts will be available for sale. Can I run with my dog/cat/turtle? That’s your call. We don’t mind... but you are 100% responsible for your pet and it’s actions.... and it’s waste. ;)How do I get my participant kit? You’ll get everything you need at check-in. 8:00 AM on race day!How is the color administered along the course? You will see smiling faces along the course whose main goal is to douse you in colorful powder to ensure that you look like you ran through a beautiful rainbow by the time you cross the finish line. Is The LVMG Color Run safe? Yes, and Gluten Free!Will the color ruin clothes or running shoes? The color does mostly wash out after the event. As with anything dirty, the sooner you wash it the better. We suggest wearing items that you wouldn’t mind getting colorful. How does the color affect the inside of cars? Most people bring some towels for the insides of their cars, or a change of clothes just in case.Are cameras and phones safe to have in the color zones? Our race photographers are generally fine shooting from a medium distance of 50 feet, but to be totally safe we always recommend covering cameras/phones with a protective dust wrap. Those colorful powder particles are sneaky and The LVMG Color Run is not liable for any damage that might be done to your camera!Is The LVMG Color Run timed? The LVMG Color Run 5k is not a timed event. Runners tend to take their sweet time out there and we realized no one really cares about their speed :) We suggest self-timing for anyone desiring a finish time.Are there refunds? If an event is held as advertised, we cannot issue refunds. The logistics of setting up and planning the event make it impossible. Just make sure you are good to go before signing up. If for some reason you can’t make it to race day, at least come to the Check-In Party, pick up your gear, and say hi to us!What if I am pregnant? It’s totally up to what you and your doctor decide. The powder is all certified non-toxic. We recommend wearing sunglasses or goggles, and a bandana over your mouth and nose in the color zones just for extra protection.What happens if there is bad weather? A little rain won’t stop us! FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Do I need to be an athlete to join? Oh my goodness, NO. There are plenty of other great 5ks out there to test speed and performance. The LVMG Color Run event is all about a color-crazy day with friends and family. You can run, walk, crawl, or cartwheel if you wish!What is included with my registration? An awesome T-Shirt, bib number, sunglasses, bag of color, water and snack! Hopefully most of you can hold on to your BAG OF COLOR until the FINISH LINE. Can children participate? YES! The more the better... just PLEASE supervise them. If they can cover (running, jogging, walking, or strolling) the three miles of The LVMG Color Run course, they can absolutely participate in The LVMG Color Run!Do Kids have to register and pay? 6 and under are free and do not have to register... but they will not get a T-Shirt, bib number, sunglasses, or bag of color. T-Shirts will be for sale at the event. If we sell out of shirts at the event we can order more shirts for you to come pick up at a later date.

Patterson Cottage Receives Gift of Civil War Sword

The Patterson Cottage Museum recently received the generous gift of a Civil War sword and scabbard from a former Liberty resident who grew up across from the cottage. Chip Dameron, now of Chapel Hill, who donated the sword, said he thought it belonged in a small Southern museum, especially one in his hometown. His mother Cynthia had purchased the sword in the 1950’s and it was thought to have been used in the Confederacy. The sword is a model 1840 cavalry saber manufactured by CR Kirschbaum, Solingen Prussia, and was used extensively during the Civil War by both sides. It was easily identified by the graphic of a knight’s head on the ricasso, or flat, unsharpened space on the blade. Measuring 42 inches long with a yard-long blade and relatively heavy, it was termed the “wrist breaker” by cavalrymen who used it. The swords were supplied to various state and local militias before the conflict and fell into the hands of both Confederate and Union forces when war broke out. “We are really indebted to Chip for his kind gift,” said Patterson Cottage chairman Warren Dixon. “We’ve received a great many donations over the years and this is one of the nicer ones we’ve ever had. We’ll give it a place of honor in our collection.” Stop by the Patterson Cottage Saturday, May 21 from 10-5p.m. or Sunday May 22, 1-5 p.m. and see the sword and the many other items in the collection. The cottage will be open every third Saturday from April through October.

Tip and Toss: Eight steps to prevent mosquito and tick bites this summer“Tip and Toss” is the message officials are sharing during April’s Tick and Mosquito Borne Disease Awareness Month, encouraging individuals to protect themselves by eliminating mosquito breeding areas and taking preventive measures to reduce the likelihood of mosquito and tick bites. Tick- and mosquito-borne infections are common in North Carolina. More than 790 cases of domestically acquired and travel-associated tick- and mosquito-borne diseases w e r e reported in 2015, including Rocky Mountain Spotted F e v e r , Lyme disease, LaCrosse encephalitis and West Nile virus. The first travel-associated case of Zika virus in North Carolina was reported in February 2016. These diseases are diagnosed across the state and can be acquired at any time of year, though the majority of infections occur from June to September. In proclaiming April Tick and Mosquito Awareness Month in North Carolina, Governor Pat McCrory noted that ticks and mosquitoes are a natural part of our environment, so protective measures are the best way to avoid illnesses associated with them. "Ticks and mosquitoes are very common in our state, and they can carry bacteria and viruses that cause serious infections," said State Public Health Veterinarian, Carl Williams, DVM. "The good news is that many of these infections can be prevented by following some basic control measures." Those measures include reducing habitat for the pests and reducing exposure to them. Tip and Toss:Reduce mosquito breeding opportunities by emptying standing water from flowerpots, gutters, buckets, pool covers, pet water dishes, discarded t i r e s and birdbaths at least weekly. Be sure to tightly secure screens on all openings on rain barrels used for water conservation. Clean up any trash or leaves that may be around your home or in rain gutters.

Reduce exposure and use preventive measures: Avoid tick habitats, which include wooded, grassy or brushy areas. Use tick and mosquito repellent that contains DEET (or equivalent) on exposed skin and wear clothing treated with permethrin, a synthetic insecticide used against disease-carrying insects. If you find a tick attached to your body, carefully remove it by grasping the tick with fine-tipped tweezers as close as possible to your skin and apply a steady gentle pull until it releases. Reduce tick habitat on your property by mowing frequently and keeping your yard clear of old furniture and debris. Mosquito-proof your home by installing or repairing screens on windows and doors to keep mosquitoes outside, and use air conditioning if you have it.

Patterson Cottage Plans Special Programs The Patterson Cottage Museum has several events planned for the upcoming months. On Saturday, May 21 and Sunday, May 22 the museum will be open to participate in a county-wide Museum Open House. It is anticipated that all twelve of the county museums will be open this weekend. The date coincides with the official opening of the Franklinville Riverside History Museum, Randolph County’s first open-air historic park. This museum is located at 1295 Andrew Hunter Rd, Franklinville. The Patterson Cottage will host a Downtown Tour starting at the cottage at 11:00 a.m. May 21. The museum will be open from 10-5 on the 21st and 1-5 on Sunday, May 22 for this special county-wide event. The Patterson Cottage is also planning three upcoming programs. On June 18 at 11:00 a.m., noted Civil War historian Wally Jarrell, author of “The Randolph Hornets in the Civil War”, will speak on Randolph County’s role in the war. Jarrell will also exhibit some of his Civil War artifacts, including a uniform, musket and other relics. On Saturday, June 25, the museum is tentatively scheduling a “Black History Day” in an effort to collect and preserve the heritage of Liberty’s African-American community. At this event, the museum will document family stories and histories, copy documents, pictures and memorabilia and accept donations of items related to the community’s history. Also planned in the future is a Walk Through Fairview, a short tour of Fairview Cemetery’s oldest section and a discussion of some of Liberty’s founding families. Watch the June issue of “The Liberty Leader” for specific dates and times for the above three events. 5th Annual Boomer, Senior & Caregiver Expo Planned for Randolph CountyThe fifth annual Randolph County Boomer, Senior & Caregiver Expo is scheduled for Wednesday, May 18th, 2016 at Randolph Mall from 10 a.m. – 2p.m. The Expo will be free and open to the public. This event is sponsored by Randolph Hospital Home Health, Hospice of Randolph County, Randolph Orthopedics & Sports Medicine, 99.9 FM WZOO, Randolph Hospital Insurance Exchange Navigators, Victorian Senior Care, Randolph County Senior Adults and Asheboro Lion’s Club. The Expo will provide an opportunity to enhance the health and wellness of baby boomers, senior citizens and caregivers by connecting them to local resources in their own community. This will be a free, one stop opportunity for individuals to learn about resources in the community at a fun and friendly event designed just for them. The event will offer blood pressure and blood sugar checks, spinal screenings and body fat analysis screenings. There will be numerous educational/informational booths as well as a fashion show by Christians United Outreach Center, The Growing Place Four Year Old Class Choir, The Monarch Movers and Shakers Hand Bell Choir and the Randolph Senior Steppers. The Lions Club Vision Van will be on-site to perform vision screenings and to collect eye glasses. The 2015 Expo was a tremendous success with over 350 registered participants and over 50 vendors that provided educational information as well as health screenings and representatives from Asheboro Police Department, Randolph County Sheriff’s Office and Asheboro Fire Department.This fifth annual event is being organized by a collaborative of community partners including Bayada Home Health Care, Brookdale of Asheboro, Carillon Assisted Living, Clapps Nursing Home, Community Home Care & Hospice, Cross Road Retirement Community, Home Health of Randolph Hospital, Home Instead Senior Care, Hospice of Randolph County, Randolph County Public Library, Randolph County Senior Adults Association, Staywell Senior Care, Randolph Hospital, Randolph Hospital Home Health, Randolph Medical Associates, and Victorian Senior Care. RCC Welcomes 58 Into Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society Beta Theta Rho, the local Five Star Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa at Randolph Community College, welcomed 58 new members during its Spring Induction Ceremony on Saturday, April 16, in the R. Alton Cox Learning Resources Center auditorium on the Asheboro Campus. Zeno Phu, Beta Theta Rho treasurer, led the Pledge of Allegiance while Lilith Ward, secretary, presented the invocation. Clark Adams, RCC English/Communication instructor and one of the chapter advisors, welcomed the crowd and explained the mission and purpose of Phi Theta Kappa. He explained that Phi Theta Kappa is about giving more than just the minimal effort and that new members “know all about going the extra mile and making sacrifices to reach this point.” “You are the superstars of RCC,” Adams told students. “You set the standard for other students to follow and we’re proud of you.” In his welcome message, Adams recognized college employees, administration, other Phi Theta Kappa advisors for their support. The keynote speaker was Dr. Robert S. Shackleford Jr., president of Randolph Community College. Before delivering his address to the new members, Shackleford presented Phi Theta Kappa advisors Clark Adams and Melissa Earliwine (Developmental Mathematics instructor) with Phi Theta Kappa honorary pins for completing five years of service as advisors. Shackleford then spoke to students about “The Road Not Taken” as he referred to the famous poem by Robert Frost. He explained to students that they could choose to “follow the herd” or do something unique and outstanding. Referring to such figures as Mary McLeod Bethune, Elvis Presley, and Thomas Edison, Shackleford explained that these individuals chose a path of their own and made a difference in the lives of others. Shackleford challenged the new inductees to do the same. Melinda Eudy, interim vice president of instructional services, presided over the ceremony and inducted the new members. Student officers of the local chapter played key roles in the ceremony. Taylor Maness, vice president, told the audience about the significance of the carnation as a symbol of Phi Theta Kappa and led the new inductees in the Phi Theta Kappa pledge. Lilith Ward handed out the carnations to the inductees, while Zeno Phu was in charge of the membership book. Phi Theta Kappa members Katherine Craven and Katlyn Walls served as ushers. More people die of lung cancer than of colon, breast and prostate cancers combined. Unfortunately, most lung cancers are detected at later Stages, Stage III or Stage IV, meaning the cancers have reached an advanced state and cure rates are low. L u n g cancer symptoms don ’ t usua l l y materialize until later stages once the disease has metastasized (spread). If you do have lung cancer, the key is early diagnosis. The earlier you can detect it, the better chance of approaching it with a curative intent.Join Brittany Hout, PA-C, with Randolph Medical Associates, as she hosts an informative discussion on a new approach to helping to identify lung cancer at an earlier stage. Ramseur CommunityLifeguards Needed for the City of Asheboro ASHEBORO - The Asheboro Cultural and Recreation Services Department is seeking individuals over the age of fifteen to serve as Lifeguards at the city pools during the summer of 2016. Candidates will be required to complete The American Red Cross Lifeguard Training, which includes First-Aid and CPR-AED for the Professional Rescuer, before being considered for employment. Lifeguards are hired as seasonal employees and are expected to work from mid- May to mid-August, which includes the pool season as well as opening and closing duties.
