Freedom Park has had their 1/2 mile walking track but now there is a new addition. Exercise equipment along that trail next to the kids playground. Another joint effort between Town Of Liberty and Randolph Hospital Community Health Foundation. Even better that is that they town positioned them so as you work out you can watch your kids while they play on the park equipment. A very well thought out process by the town. Movies Coming Back To LibertyWell the buzz is hitting the streets fast in Liberty. And yes, movies are coming back to the old Curtis Theater now the Liberty Showcase. Through grant money from NC STEP Program the town now has a large 17 foot screen and system. A joint venture between Ron Staley owner of Liberty Showcase and a new committee appointed by Town Manager and approved by Liberty Town Council are working through the details. It appear the first shows will be the second week of March. For starters shows will me Thur, Fri and Sat nights at 7:30pm and a Thursday afternoon matinee for Seniors. Once attendance picks up I hope to see two shows. Plans are that each week will be a different movie. There will be special Sunday Christian theme movies in the works. Ron will still continue to have his occasional music venue also. Look at the concession prices, wow. Here is where you can stay local , grab a meal before or after and catch a show. I have had so much fun following the flood of memories that have been pouring out since the announcement of movies. Follow the memory train below and share yours. Don Herndon , President of Chamber said, “I will go. I have great memories of the Curtis Theater movies. That was about all the culture we had here. I saw Gone With the Wind, Ben Hur, Raging Bull and so many other great films in that building. The owner that followed just couldn't make it work because of VHS rentals, BUT I think folks would like to "get out" occasionally these days.” Don also added, “When you were grade school age, you went to the 2pm Sat matinee, but you knew you were bigtime when you went to the 7pm or 9pm shows.” Chris Cheek Jobe,” I think I saw all of the Elvis movies.” Alice Collier Smith Moore , “My mother, Margaret Smith, the Liberty School librarian, and I saw "Blazing Saddles," among other 'classics.' What a hoot!” Gayle Day Yeager ,”I loved Mrs. Smith - I will always especially remember her reading "The Box Car Children" to us - she was wonderful.” Alice Collier Smith Moore ,”Gayle Day Yeager, she still has that book on her bookshelf at Friends Homes West!” John Cummings ,”I remember the Saturday Matinee, 25 cents admission, and pop corn and a drink another 25 cents. A whole afternoon of entertainment for much less than a dollar.” Marcia Day ,” I went to work in 1965 - kids under 12 25 cents, students 60 cents and adults 75 cents., drinks were a dima and popcorn 15 cents. Loved working there.” Archie Durham,” Hmmm...I wonder if the ghost of Mr. Curtis will be in the theater like he used to with his flashlight during the movie making sure the teenagers are behaving. He and his Mom also owned the Siler City Drive In movie, and he did the same thing there!” Leslie

Encounters In Area AgainEncounter Revival Ministries will be ministering at Faith Baptist Church on 1382 Greenfield St Ramseur during the week of February 22. With the use of Godly music, life sketches and readings, along with age appropriate teaching, the Encounter team gives practical guidelines for living that are applicable to everyday life. Sunday’s service will be a get acquainted service that will include a mini concert along with preaching by Ardy Parlin. Our evening services will be held on Wednesday through Friday at 7:00 p.m. Each night will hold a special emphasis: Wednesday—Youth Group Night, Thursday—Middle & High School Night, Friday—Elementary Night. Following the general session, split sessions for adults, teens, and children will be held. In addition to the meetings at the church, Encounter will be ministering in the school Monday-Friday. All services will be held in the gym. Nursery will be provided for all services.

ERHS Alumni Basketball GamePictures are worth a thousand word or you can say a thousand cheers. That is what was heard at the ERHS Alumni first basketball game. Hope this is the first of many to come. It was so great to see past graduate of all ages playing side by side, cheering from side by side. What was even more great was seeing the large smiles from old classmates reunited and laughing and sharing memories. My hat off to the great team that organized and pulled off this great event. Even looks like the the old wildcat mascot had him a time of his life that night also.What a great turn out at the 1st annual ERHS Alumni game! A grass roots effort that came together. FREE Classes In Liberty From NC STEP GrantThe first list of classes are posted for the Liberty residents from the NC STEP Grant funding Liberty

received. After a year of meetings and planning with strategies groups made up of local Liberty citizens below is the first wave of classed being offered. These classes are to help provided existing and future business owners and employees with info on to how to run a better business and become more educating in the current work force. Ready To Get Your Laugh OnComedian, Legend James Gregory comes to the Historic Downtown Liberty at the Liberty Showcase. On Friday March 6th, James Gregory "The Funniest Man In America" will bring his "clean" blend of humor back auditorium in The Liberty Showcase. A great show for all ages ! James Gregory grew up watching stand-up comedy on programs like Jack Benny, Milton Berle and the Ed Sullivan Show. After some nudging from his friends, he started doing open mic stand-up in Atlanta and things just took off. Today he performs his down-home stories of food, funerals and funny relatives to sold-out theatres, working 48 weeks of the year. He’s also a regularly invited guest on national radio shows, like The Bob & Tom Show , Moby In The Morning and The Big Show with John Boy and Billy. Early in his career he earned the moniker, “Funniest Man in America,” but, he’s quick to tell you, “At that time there were only 13 states.” His jokes are squeaky clean as, he says, “My mother wouldn’t let me tell them if they weren’t.” It’s the kind of show you could feel comfortable bringing your date or your grandmother. What’s really unique about Gregory is his appeal to people of all ages, races, creeds and colors. It’s not unusual to see three generations rolling in the aisles. He comes off as that funny uncle that everyone gathers around at family reunions, because he has the best stories – and so reminds people of their own families. While his routines include such Southern subjects as covered-dish suppers, road trips to Stuckey's, and the healthy aspects of fried foods, it’s a mistake to consider him a regional comic. Says Gregory, "To me, Southern comedians are guys who get onstage and talk about pickup trucks, rifle racks and cow-tipping. I don't talk about the South; I just deliver my material with a Southern accent. My comedy is based on the real life-the people I grew up with. My notions about food came from them. They all eat fried foods and many of them are in their eighties. Meanwhile you read in the news how some health nut kicked the bucket jogging on the way home from the health food store.” He says, “People come to a comedy club to laugh. It seems like the new thing in comedy today is 'stream of consciousness' or 'cerebral' material. I doubt if a husband and wife ever looked at each other on their way to a comedy club and said, 'Gee, I hope this guy is going to be real cerebral tonight.' I think they say, 'He sure better be funny.'"You could image that after 30 years, a comedian might become a bit jaded. Not Gregory. When he hits the stage, he comes alive like someone just plugged him in, and his fans adore him. After each show, he truly enjoys meeting with fans and signing autographs. New Restaurant Re-Opens To Historical LocationDogwood Bistro will be opening Feb. 14. As I noted last month in the story, this restaurant will be a farm to table menu. Makes you wonder how much the original location did the same. Life was different back then. Oh the good old days. Well with one picture a flood of memories can back to many locals. Thanks to local James Brower for sharing the original photo of this restaurant. James Brower stated, “We all fondly remember Liberty Drive Inn. If you're old enough, you may remember it started out as Pugh's Grill and Barbecue, owned and operated by Mr. and Mrs. Nate Pugh. Ritchie York, Judy's hubby is their grandson.” Well for me this was a new piece of knowledge, for I always thought this place was known for Liberty Drive In. From this one statement follow the flow of history recalled by so many great people. Ann Wilson Leonard shared, “We spent many an hour at that place...but outside...did anybody ever go inside in those days?? And you had to circle in your car all the way around back to check out who else was there!” Virginia Walters concluded, “ Ahhhhh….circling Liberty Drive Inn! So many great memories! Yes, Ann, I remember going inside after "home" basketball games and just hanging out, however, the real fun was circling just to see who was there and what was going on! Didn't take much to entertain us back then, uh?!” The rich history that made Liberty great and being recalled for the current citizens. Wynell Clapp added, “Round Round Round The Liberty Drive Inn! Those were the days! We all had a blast so many memories!” Archie Durham recalled, “ Ah yes,Liberty Drive In..... I remember it well .I'd love to go back to that time and place and have a burger and fries or a cold beer and see some of the old friends from back then. We didn't know how lucky we were to be at that age and place and in those times. “ Margie Ward recalled, “I remember they had the best hamburgers! We stopped there on our way home from basketball games in the '54,'55, and '56 era.” Judith Griffith Rogers said, “Do I remember circling Liberty Drive Inn--that's just the way it was!!!! Loved it!!! “Yvonne Wright recalled, “ I remember the drive-in ,it was great.”Don David Lambe recalled, “We could circle Liberty Drive In but could not stop. It sold beer. That's the way we were raised. We parked at Bi-Rite.” Robie George Gray Jimmy stated, “Bring back many, many memories! I think I see my 1956 Ford in the picture.” Chris Cheek Jobe added, “Yes, I remember. I think the car in the far right belonged to Mom & Dad. We were always there. Aunt Frances worked there for as long as I can remember and then became manager. Robie was this your car or my parents? Good question.” Sometimes a story rights it self. As you can see this one did.

Liberty Food Drive Update“This year the Liberty Fire Department and Police Department held our annual canned food drive to benefit needy families in our community. We are pleased to announce Liberty and the surrounding area residents stepped forward and donated 2205 food items for the LAC to distribution. Several businesses again stepped forward and donated items and locations to hold the drive. Food Lion and Dollar General donated both a hosting location and food. Patterson Cottage Museum Corner -Brenda Heindl, Committee Member In the collections of the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts (MESDA) in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, is a chest of drawers made not too far from Liberty. This piece (photos courtesy of MESDA), was made around 1833 by a man named Eli Spoon who worked in Randolph County. A signature in one of the drawers reads, “Joseph Whitney 1833.” Joseph Whitney was an apprentice to Eli Spoon. Eli Spoon’s signature is also on this piece. Initial research has shown that Eli Spoon was born around 1798 and lived in Randolph County until the 1880s when he passed away. A unique feature of this piece are the panels on the sides of the chest. The 1⁄4” lunettes in the corners of the molded panels are not seen typically on other North Carolina pieces of furniture from that time period, although it is seen in architecture. In 1982, this chest of drawers was found at an auction west of Melanchthon at the Amick family home between Grays’s Chapel and Liberty. Other than the Amick family being of German descent, little is known about them or their possible connections to Eli Spoon. Do you know about the Amick or Spoon families from Randolph County? 4th Annual Boomer, Senior & Caregiver Expo Planned for Randolph Co

Asheboro, NC— The fourth annual Randolph County Boomer, Senior & Caregiver Expo is scheduled for Wednesday, May 20th, 2015 at Randolph Mall from 10 a.m. – 2p.m. The Expo will be free and open to the public. The Expo will provide an opportunity to enhance the health and wellness of baby boomers, senior citizens and caregivers by connecting them to local resources in their own community. This will be a free, one stop opportunity for individuals to learn about resources in the community at a fun and friendly event designed just for them. The event will offer free health screenings, unique entertainment and numerous educational/informational booths. Please save the date for the 2015 Expo! The 2014 Expo was a tremendous success with over 350 registered participants and over 50 vendors that provided educational information as well as health screenings including spine, balance, body mass index, blood sugar and blood pressure. The 100 Man Project Update The 100 Man Project, Inc. met on January 9, 2015 at 10am at the Liberty Fire Department for our regular monthly meeting. There were thirteen members present. The C.A.R.S. program has been very busy with 1334 miles being driven in December 2014. We are always in need of additional volunteers as drivers and invite you to call our Dispatcher at 622-5774 for more information. We also accept monetary donations at P O Box 83, Liberty, NC 27298. The Dental Van is scheduled to be in Liberty on June 5, 2015. We will start taking applications in March. Watch for further information on this wonderful service for the Liberty Area people. A big Thank You goes out to Sandra Lambe for her years of dedicated service as secretary for our 100 Man Project. Good luck to you in your new ventures. Remember the Reading Program is continuing at the Liberty Library. Be sure your child registers for this program when checking out a book. You don’t want to miss the Ice Cream Party at the end of the contest.
