It is time for the great family at Oakwood to celebrate together. Our
annual celebration is scheduled for Sunday, June 5th. We sure hope
your family is planning on joining us that day for our worship service,
lunch and celebration service. Here is what you need to know:

if you are a guest, regular attender or member. If you are part of this
family then please come celebrate with us. Sign-up so we know how
much food to order.
What?
A great day for a great family
comprised of our regular
morning Worship Service
followed by a catered lunch
then the Celebration Service.
Where?
Oakwood Community Church
When?
Sunday, June 5, 2016.
10:30am Worship Service
12:00pm Catered Lunch
1:00pm Celebration Service
Why?
It is good to take the time to praise our God for what He has done and
is doing at Oakwood. Yes, I know…the members will need to take care
of annual business items like affirming Elder and Deacon Candidates,
Constitution and By-Law changes and Budget approval, but then we
celebrate! We will hear testimonies of God’s abundant blessings. We
will worship God in song. We will thank God and pray for His continued
blessing. Please make this a priority in your busy schedule.
Tickets must be purchased in advance. No tickets will be sold at the door.
Oakwood Community Church was estab-
lished during the summer of 1954. The first
12 years had their ups and downs with four
different pastors serving a congregation that
fluctuated between 12—35 people.
During the spring of 1966, the pulpit
committee contacted Robert Service who
had just graduated from Detroit Bible
College with a degree in religious education.
A week later, he became the pastor of the
little white church on Baldwin Road. He
preached his first sermon on Mother’s Day
and 12 people attended the service.
From that day forward, Pastor Bob has been
a faithful servant to the people of Oakwood.
During his first tenure, he wore many hats
including pastor, secretary, youth group
leader, janitor, gardener, and just about
everything else that needed to be done at the
church. Oakwood Community Church began
to grow with Pastor Bob working alongside
many volunteers as pastor and friend.
Eventually, Oakwood outgrew the little white
building and moved to our current building
on Oakwood Road in 2002 where Pastor Bob
continued to shepherd the congregation with
genuine love and his trademark sense of
humor!
This Mothers Day 2016, we thank Pastor Bob
Service for his 50 years at Oakwood
Community Church. Well done, good and
faithful servant!
On April 30th our Oakwood family had our first successful Serve on
Saturday (S.O.S.) event at Banbury Cross Therapeutic Equestrian
Center in Oxford. As a church, we’ve had a vision and growing passion
for reaching out and serving our community with God’s love. Banbury
Cross was our “soft launch” into this outreach ministry and Oakwood
showed up in a BIG way.
92 people came out to humbly and joyfully serve. The tasks were not
easy… weeding, painting fences, cleaning tack, blowing out ditches,
raking and shoveling manure, mowing, etc. The S.O.S. leadership
team was blown away by the smiles and willingness to serve in every
area (even the smelly ones). It was a truly amazing sight to see all of
the colorful S.O.S shirts that were scattered to every corner of Banbury
Cross. We saw God’s people, young and old, willing to use their gifts to
serve along side the staff at Banbury.
God uses Banbury Cross to touch lives and hearts in a powerful way.
Monique Robbins, a member of Oakwood and a rider/volunteer at
Banbury shared with us that this outreach meant something very
special to her family: “Banbury Cross is my place of healing in many
ways and is a place my son and I can go to become stronger. I looked
out numerous times around the ranch and saw people doing many
different tasks that made the whole event come together. It was like
nothing I have ever seen before.”
Oakwood was blessed and privileged to serve at Banbury Cross!
Thank you to everyone who was a part of it. Please mark your
calendars for our next opportunity to Serve on Saturday, June 18th.
