Champions of the Club are those who go above and beyond to fill the Buckets (membership, rooms and catering), and help the MAC prosper. Each month, the Cherry Diamond will feature one of our many MAC Champions.

Joan Wahl and family1. How do we use the Club? Well, we use the MAC mainly for social events! We have six adult children, three married (and all three weddings have been at the MAC) and four

grandchildren, so attending all of the holiday brunches are a must! The weddings were absolutely perfect all thanks to Terri Lee and the MAC staff! Our guests, including all of us, spent the wedding weekends at the MAC as well! It doesn’t get easier than that! I’m not a huge workout person, but when I do, I use the West facility. Between yoga classes, weights, cardio equipment and great personal trainers, it has it all!2. How did you get involved with recruiting new members? Recruiting new members is fairly easy! We just refer friends that have asked about the Club!3. How many members have you recruited?My husband, Ed, has recruited 5 or 6 people.4. How do you utilize the MAC Catering Department? Weddings!!!!! The Catering Department is amazing! We continue to receive compliments on our daughter’s

wedding dinners! Seriously! Who does that?! Starting with appetizers/drinks in the Art Lounge and then dinner in the Missouri Room, everything was served hot and the filets were to die for! And the Pastry Department can make ANY cake that you can dream up----there is NO need to go to another bakery! Having a wedding at the MAC couldn’t be easier!5. How do you utilize the MAC overnight guest rooms? As I stated earlier, our guests have all stayed at the MAC for our weddings--even the in-town guests! And why not? It’s so nice to sit back and enjoy the evening and then call it a night by going right upstairs! Also, many times when we, or any of our adult children, are Downtown for an event, we like to spend the night at the MAC, too! My husband has also booked rooms for some of his out of town clients when they come in for a Cardinal game, etc. You cannot beat the location!

All great organizations have one thing in common… a clear understanding of the

ultimate goal of the operation. The goal of the Missouri Athletic Club since its inception by our founding fathers has been “to be the premier athletic, social and dining club for business professionals and civic leaders and their families in the St. Louis Area.” We all hopefully have witnessed it in our families and workplaces, when people come together for one great cause, great things can be accomplished. That feeling is currently alive and well at both of our Clubhouses among members and our dedicated employees. You can hear it in conversations and see it in the faces of fellow members and employees alike. The feeling of “we are all is this together” is felt on our athletic courts, fitness classes, restaurants and in the day-to-day work duties of our employees. There is no other club comparable to the MAC in the St. Louis market. With both of our Clubhouse locations, there is truly something of value available to every member of our families. As the three-year term of my Board class comes to an end, on behalf of these other four fine gentlemen, let me just say THANK YOU to each of you. Thank you for your continued membership, your comments/suggestions and recommendations on how to continually improve all of our member experiences. One common question I have received over the last few years from fellow members is, “What can I do help the Club?” My response is a simple one… use the Club for all that it offers and show it off to your friends and business associates so that they can

experience all the ways MAC membership might benefit them and their family members. As I reflect on the past three years of service, there is not enough space in the Cherry Diamond to share all the stories, meetings, events and fond memories I have shared with my fellow classmates Gordon Bush, Dan Fusz, Chris Michalak and David Weiss. Since 2010, our goals were to improve the financial position of the Club, improve the MAC brand in the marketplace, improve the membership value per member feedback, improve member communications and develop a road map for future Boards to implement, update and improve upon. These four friends have contributed their time and professional talents, and the MAC is a better place for it. Please thank them the next time you see them. Fifteen months ago, we welcomed our new General Manager Wally Smith. It has been a pleasure working side-by-side with Wally this last year. Wally brought with him a top-notch resume and he is living up to our expectations since joining the MAC team. Wally has made great strides improving our Clubs operations, controlling expenses, creating increased membership value and bringing solutions to the Board of Governors. I told Wally at our first meeting together, “Spend our money (the members) like it is your own!” Wally truly understands spending “smart money” and the future looks bright under his leadership. Thursday, May 9 is our Annual Business Meeting at MAC West. It will focus on the Club’s last five-years trends; where we are

currently and what our key focuses are moving forward. See the inside front cover of this magazine for a preview. Please plan to attend and hear about the current Club finances and make a dinner reservation following to experience Chef Grant’s new menu items. See page 12 for a sneak peak of items that will be presented that evening. The Father-Daughter Banquet is Wednesday, May 15. If you have never attended, you are missing one of the greatest nights to make memories with your daughter or granddaughter. I took my daughter Katelynn for the first time when she was 3-years-old and the annual tradition will a part of our relationship for years to come. President-elect John Bugh, along with newly elected officers and Board members will take office May 16. I am excited about the future leadership of these 10 individuals along with the new 2016 Class. You can expect positive results from this Board under the financial expertise and leadership of President-elect Bugh. Finally, a special thanks to my wife Kerrie, daughter Katelynn, and son Ben for their support over the last three years. My lovely wife has kept our home and kids in order this year (and many years prior), with Dad absent in the evenings. I look forward to spending more time together at home and of course at the MAC , with a few less events on the calendar now. I ran for the Board three years ago for one selfish reason, to make sure the MAC continues to be a thriving Club for years to come, so one day we can celebrate our daughter Katelynn’s wedding reception here at the MAC.

West is Gearing up for summer!Thanks to contributions from January’s Gala, the West Pool will have a whole new look for in time for the Opening Pool party on Saturday, May 25. The furniture will

be replaced with all-new commercial grade furniture, including high and low tables, and color-coordinated furniture in the

outdoor dining area. New lighting, awnings and umbrellas will complete the new look at the Pool. It will be a dramatic difference

from last season and members are sure to enjoy the new Pool. Bring friends and show off your improved West Clubhouse!

The West Fitness Center received a makeover in April, thanks to contributions from January’s Gala. West Fitness has been treated to fresh paint, new floors, a new fitness desk and most im-portantly, state-of-the-art equipment! The biggest additions were new Nautilus circuit and Free Motion cable motion systems. The new equipment will allow members to exercise using the industry standards for efficacy and safety. The Free Motion

equipment offers greater range of motion and limitless possibili-ties. The new Nautilus circuit offers increased opportunity to use the traditional circuit while maximizing fitness benefits. In addition, West Fitness has a new drop-ceiling, new automated blinds, a built-in towel rack, a filing cabinet for members’ fitness logs, a coffee station and new refrigeration.

The West Clubhouse is an energetic place to host a kid’s party. They have the space and resources to run around and have a great time! The staff will personalize birthdays, team sport parties or any other fun and unique celebration to your liking. Favorites include hockey, soccer, baseball, basketball and flag football par-ties. Along with these unique events, groups also like add a few favorites such as kickball and dodgeball, which are a fun way to get parents involved!

By the time the party’s over, everyone walks away with a huge smile on their face, which is what these special days are all about! In most cases, the families that attend the party are fellow members of your Club, but those who aren’t may have so much fun, they’ll end up joining! Dear MAC Members: A big shout-out to Athletic Director Jeff Tuhro and Facilities Manager Skip Bowders for all their hard work and efforts transforming the West Fitness Center. This recent equipment upgrade was an offshoot of the survey we did last fall, and one of the most desired improvements sighted by our members. The Gala in January, and all the member support, raised the needed funds, and the guys noted above ran with the project from concept to opening. Thank you! The reviews on the upgrades have been outstanding and we thank everyone for their survey input, Gala support and recent feedback. Next up is opening the West Pool, and a number of nice improvements around the deck were also stimulated by the survey and funded by the Gala. I love it when a plan comes together. We asked you, you told us, you supported us and it’s happening. While you may not see it, improvements have been going on Downtown as well. We just

completed converting all our rooms and TV’s to a digital platform and ran Internet connections to every room. Also underway is the expansion of our Wi-Fi coverage and available bandwidth from top to bottom. This initiative helps us with Bucket 2 and 3, Catering and Rooms. We are open for business, so the next time you have people coming into town for meetings etc… Stay with us and do your business with us. We will make the entire process hassle-free for you and your guests. Next up will be our Preservation Foundation Annual Golf Classic on Aug. 26 at Glen Echo Country Club. This event will sell out so watch for details as they come out. It is such a fun event and all the proceeds go to the preservation of our historic Downtown Clubhouse’s infrastructure and life-safety issues. Proceeds from last year’s tournament are being used right now to complete the tuck pointing and needed repair of the light well around the hotel rooms.In conjunction, two of our roof

sections are being replaced and a number of fire rated doors installed to make the egress corridors safe. As we developed our five-year rolling capital plan, these projects were identified as priority and will lead to other improvements once complete. You may have noticed the “Preservation Gallery” in the main lobby, which was refined several months ago. This area proudly displays the names of our members whom have given to the Preservation Foundation in acknowledgment to their contributions and love for the MAC. Also, please note that there are a few blank bricks in the Preservation Gallery. They are available for anyone wishing to participate in this wonderful program, all aimed at the preservation of our awesome Downtown Clubhouse. And finally, it still amazes me how deep the love of the MAC goes within our Membership and the community, and I’m so proud to be here in St. Louis doing what I do. Inspired by the television show, “The Biggest Loser,” the MAC hosted a weight loss competition from January through March. The winner of the contest was the person who lost the most percentage of body weight, not number of pounds. The winner of this year’s competition is Clinton Wright. Wright lost an impressive 14.06 percent of his body weight. Grant Dino came in second place, losing 9.12 percent. Wright received five 1-hour massages and five personal training sessions at the MAC. He also received a night stay for two in a villa at Chaumette Winery in Ste. Genevieve, Mo. For finishing in second place, Dino received three 1-hour massages and three personal training sessions at the MAC.

Make your dad feel like a King this Father’s Day! Treat him to a delicious brunch with the family at the West Clubhouse on Sunday, June 16. With multiple seatings, you can get in early or come later so dad can squeeze in that golf game or one of his other favorite activities. Seatings are available from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m.

Since 1947, fathers and daughters have been getting dressed up and attending the popular Father-Daughter Banquet at the MAC. This tradition has been giving fathers, daughters, grandfathers and granddaughters a special evening together for over 65 years! On Wednesday, May 15, the tradition of the Father-Daughter Banquet will continue at the Downtown Clubhouse. An evening of carriage rides, dinner, pictures and dancing will be a memory to last a lifetime for both fathers and daughters. Carriage rides will begin the evening at 5:30 p.m., and are $10 per person. You can reserve your carriage ride by calling 314-539-4470. Dads and daughters can also have a professional photo taken in Art Lounge between 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. At the end of the night, daughters will be given the photo, and a special gift. Dinner will be served at 7 p.m., following photos and carriage rides. The dinner options include a filet of beef or chicken tenders, and daughters will be given a meal that coordinates with age, unless requested and noted on reservation. After dinner, music and dancing will be provided by Joe Fingerhut from Complete Music, from 8-10 p.m. For reservations, call 314-539-4470.

Specialty camps allow your child to focus on a particular

sport they are interested in either to improve their skills or learn something totally new. The West Clubhouse offers children, ages 5 – 18, the opportunity to sharpen their athletic skills through various camps. Don’t foul out by missing the registration deadline for the summer basketball leagues, which tip off in June. The MAC basketball leagues are a lot of fun offering a great workout and camaraderie with fellow members. You don’t have to play like Dwayne Wade to join the leagues either. House rules guarantee that every player gets significant playing time. Games will be held at the Downtown Clubhouse on Tuesday

evenings; On Thursday nights, the action shifts to the West Clubhouse. Both leagues will begin the week of June 3. Members are welcome to play in both Clubhouse leagues. Sign up through the Club website (mac-stl.org). With the popularity of the basketball leagues, you will want to reserve your spot now. The deadline for signing up is May 20, or until all the spots are filled. The fee is $60 per league.

The MAC Basketballers gathered to watch the Sweet 16 NCAA tournament. Awards for the season were also handed out. Dan Meckes won the Bill Daake Sportsmanship award. To win the award, a member must have played in the leagues for at least five years and must exemplify good sportsmanship. Richard Joyce won the Rookie of the Year award for 2012-2013. Tyler Korte won the Brick award. The Brick award is awarded to the player who has the lowest free throw percentage for the year, all leagues combined, with a minimum of 30 FT attempts.

BILL DAAKE AWARD Bill was a longtime MAC basketball player who died of a cerebral aneurysm at the age of 33. Through his actions and attitudes on the court, Bill set a standard of sportsmanship that all MAC athletes should strive to attain. As a high school All-American at St. Louis Priory School, Bill was the Globe-Democrat basketball player of the year in 1969. He was recruited by several major colleges and universities. He attended Princeton University, where he played basketball until he suffered an injury. The recipient of the award is the player who best exemplifies Bill’s athletic spirit and sportsmanship. The 2013 recipient was Dan Meckes.

They beat the team captained by Brett Benyo 78-77 in the championship game, and finished the tournament with a perfect record of 4-0. Team Captain Dennis Evans was also named Tournament MVP. He scored 20 points in the championship game, including two 3-pointers in the last minute

West hosts a racquetball league on Tuesday evenings. The group typically ends the night with a doubles match, and a visit to the bar in the Stan Musial Grill after playing. Even if members may not want to play at first, they are encouraged to watch others and see how they would match up against them. The league has all levels of players and a handicap.

SQUASH NEWS! On March 22 - 24, St. Louis hosted the Squash National Dou-bles tournament. It was a huge success with 84 teams traveling here from all around the U.S. and Canada. Matches were played at both MAC Clubhouses and Racquet Club east. There were a number of St Louis players with Alastair Pringle, Joe Dolan, Kirk Sterling, Sanford Scott, Bill Simpson, Milissa Beaty, Linda Fasterling, Scott Beaty, Yago Cornes and Heidi Mather representing the MAC.Notable finishes were Milissa Beaty and Linda Fasterling finish-ing in 3rd place in the 50+ Womens and Heidi Mather/Sarah West (Philly) taking 2nd place in the Open women’s event. Most kids want to do the same activities as their parents, so take the opportunity early to introduce them to tennis. If their early tennis experiences are positive ones, your children will quickly love it and will acquire a lifetime sport. The whole point is to enjoy yourselves when you’re out on the court! Your children can grow with tennis and learn to be competitive and have fun at the same time. Losing is not always fun, but it shouldn’t squelch one’s desire to get out and play again. So early on, the focus in tennis should be on making it fun and then as your children get older, they should learn to be good competitors. A good compet-itor is one who tries hard, and is a good sport when both win-ning and losing. A good competitor enjoys the competition for the competition, not for the results. However, the results have a definite affect on all of us. When we lose too often, it is difficult to enjoy the competition. This is why when you decide to play competitive tennis with any of your children, you should give them a chance to be successful!

Feeling some nervousness before giving a speech is

natural and even beneficial, but too much nervousness can be detrimental. Here are some proven tips on how to control your butterflies and give better presentations:1. Know your material. Pick a topic you are interested in. Know

more about it than you include in your speech. Use humor, personal stories and conversational language – that way you won’t easily forget what to say.

2. Practice. Practice. Practice! Rehearse out loud with all equipment you plan on using. Revise as necessary. Work to control filler words; Practice, pause and breathe. Practice with a timer and allow time for the unexpected.

3. Know the audience. Greet some of the audience members as they arrive. It’s easier to speak to a group of friends than to strangers.

4. Know the room. Arrive early, walk around the speaking area and practice using the microphone and any visual aids.

5. Relax. Begin by addressing the audience. It buys you time and calms your nerves. Pause, smile and count to three before saying anything. “One one-thousand, two one-thousand, three one-thousand. Pause. Begin. Transform nervous energy into enthusiasm.

KICK oFF IN JUNE st. Louis has a soccer tradition

that is unmatched by any city in America. The Gateway City is regarded as the soccer capital of the U.S. That reputation dates back to 1950, when a group of St. Louis boys led the United States to a shocking upset of England in the World Cup. Later, Saint Louis University would dominate the college soccer world throughout much of the 1960s and 1970s. The Billikens ten (10) national championships are an NCAA record. Local players like Taylor Twellmann, Pat Noonan, Steve Ralston, Lori Chalupny and Chris Klein have all gone on to successful pro careers. St. Louis soccer fans can catch a glimpse of the next generation of soccer stars on Friday, June 28. The MAC is once again hosting the High School Senior All-Star games, featuring the top prep boys and girls soccer players in the St. Louis area. This year, UMB Bank is teaming up with the MAC to sponsor the event. The games will be held at the Soccer Park in Fenton with the girls game kicking off at 6 p.m., followed by the boys game at 8 p.m. Players are selected by the Eastern Missouri High School Coaches Association. Annually, these games

feature a number of bright young players who go on to make their mark at some of the top college programs in the country. Tickets can be purchased at the event: $5 for adults and $3 for students. Parking is $5. Hosting the High School All-Star Games enhances the Club’s effort to promote amateur soccer both locally and nationally. The MAC annually honors the top collegiate soccer players with the presentation of the Hermann Trophy.

The Club’s fiscal year runs from September 1 through August 31. The second quarter of our 2012-2013 fiscal year ended February 28, 2013. During the first six months of our fiscal year, revenue from departmental operations totaled $4,413,076. This total was $83,205 better than plan and $193,954 greater than last year. Membership dues reached $3,541,960. This total was $74,939 less than plan and $34,460 less than last year. Total resident members in February 2013 stood at 1,389 with total dues-paying members of 2,237; the corresponding totals for February 2012 were 1,432 and 2,286, respectively. We had 1,246 Diamond Club members in February 2013, which was 55.7% of the total dues-paying membership; last February’s total was 1,239, or 54.2%, of the total dues-paying membership. There were 361 Platinum members in February 2013 which compares to 104 Platinum members in February 2012. Unallocated costs have accumulated to $3,750,912 so far this year. This total is $7,554 greater than plan and $34,916 more than last year.

Net operating cash flow (net income before depreciation) of $694,783 was generated during the first six months of our fiscal year. This amount is $18,608 less than plan and $8,074 less than last year. Capital expenditures during the first half of our fiscal year totaled $145,276. Of the $145,276 spent so far this year, $94,961 has been spent Downtown and $50,315 has been spent at MAC West. The Club ended the quarter with $127,923 of negative cash on its balance sheet. The line of credit balance at the end of the February 2013 was zero. As of the end of February, the Club had long-term bank debt of $6,843,857 and MAC Redevelopment Corp., which owns our garage, had long-term debt of $1,426,732 for a total of $8,270,589. We are currently paying down our debt by approximately $61,425 per month.
