PRESIDENT’S COLUMN »

Last month, the Board of Directors made a trip to Chicago to visit reciprocal Clubs. Our goal was to better understand other Clubs’ best practices and to glean some ideas to make the MAC an even better place. While the Board and Wally took away some great ideas for improvement, we also reaffirmed that the MAC is a great place worthy of its Platinum Club status. These insights remind-ed me of the value the MAC offers members. Three things in particular stick out in my mind including our two unique clubhouses within fifteen minutes of anywhere, our top sports programs across all sports and ages, and obviously, the great connections we have all made to other MAC members. Looking into the future, I hope these three values be-come cornerstones of our messaging. While the trip was a great learning experience for the Board, it also served as a reminder that as a member, we all have access to reciprocal Clubs all over the world. For those traveling, I encourage you to remember this member benefit and utilize these other Clubs. A listing of these reciprocal Clubs can be found in the back of the Cherry Diamond roster as well as on the MAC website (www.mac-stl.org). Moving into November, some great events are scheduled between now and the end of the year. I want to highlight a couple of them, but please see many others on the calendar and in various articles in this issue. In honor of Veterans Day, which is Tuesday, Nov. 11, the MAC, in partnership with the Rotary Club of St. Louis, is hosting a luncheon on Nov. 6 to honor all of our nation’s veterans. Specifically, we want to recognize Veteran of the Year, Robert Fulstone, for his ongoing commitment and service to the veteran com-munity, and the first St. Louis Area Veteran Achievement Award recipient, Harry Weber, whose artistic talents help civilians better un-derstand our military. Take this opportunity to thank our nation’s heroes for their service. On the sports front, please make plans

to attend the 45th annual Jack Buck Sports Awards banquet, presented by Maryville University. This is one of the premier events the MAC hosts, and the staff does an awe-some job making it a memorable evening. This year’s banquet is on Dec. 10, and more information is available on page 17. In addition to the events mentioned above, the holidays offer numerous oppor-tunities for friends and family to gather together at the MAC and celebrate life’s blessings. For many, the MAC’s annual events such as the Thanksgiving Brunch and Dinner as well as Breakfast with Santa, Family Night with Santa, and the Christmas Eve and Day dinners are family traditions. Not only are the events fun for the whole family, but they also make the holidays more enjoyable by relieving the stress of meal preparation and cooking. Make reservations now to enjoy these special events with family, carry on old traditions or start new ones, and create lasting memories. Speaking of the holidays, if you are struggling with the perfect gift idea this year, “Give the Gift of Membership.” As a gift for a legacy family member, you can purchase a MAC membership for a grand-child, child over the age of 25, or a spouse, and your legacy membership waives their initiation fee. Keep family close by sharing your MAC membership experience. Also, consider giving the gift of membership to a business associate. Whether the person you are considering is younger and single or family oriented, all of the benefits of a MAC membership when broken down are just a few dollars per day and provide a lifetime of enjoyment. Moving on to finance, September marked the beginning of the new fiscal year, and overall it started very strong with much higher cash flow than anticipated, strong membership figures, and solid combined West and Downtown operations. Thanks to staff and the Finance committee for building a solid 2014-2015 budget. We look forward to a positive year in this area. Thanks to all of my fellow members for making the MAC such a special place. The upcoming holidays are special times to be with friends and family, and I hope to see you around the MAC as part of your celebrations!

GENERAL MANAGER’S COLUMN »

As Thanksgiving approaches, we pause and realize that we have so much to be thankful for here at the Missouri Athletic Club. I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to you, our members, for your engagement, support and love for the Club, especially those on our Board, committees, and for all of you folks on our wonderful staff. This is a very special place and time of year so it is good to give thanks for all we have and remember to live each day with an “Attitude of Gratitude.” Because of everyone’s involvement, we are able to share so many unique experiences and relationships found only within this Club, and we also share exciting initia-tives that we look forward to in 2015 and beyond. As 2015 approaches, we continue searching for creative ways to offer unique opportunities to grow our Club, and one way is through the health and growth of our Foundations. The first step is to “save the date” and share a most memorable evening with that very special someone in style on Friday, Feb. 13, 2015. On this luckiest of days, the Club will host a new very special event, The Foundations Gala. We envision this event becoming an annual extravaganza. In celebration of all that is special at the MAC, it prom-ises to be the party of the year as this event creates an opportunity for us to come together as a Club in support of our Foundations: the MAC Preser-vation Foundation, the MAC Sports Foundation, and the MAC Foundation for the Arts. I realize we have a lot of 2014 left to live, but I want to ensure

that everyone has this one on their radar. “So, what are these Foundations all about?” is the question I hear. Frankly, I had to ask myself upon joining the staff of the MAC. With that, I would like to take a couple paragraphs to focus on what they are and ask that you use your imagination in considering what they can be —along with how they will a play that essential role in manifesting the MAC’s next century. The mission of the MAC Preserva-tion Foundation is to: Preserve, rejuvenate and memorialize the history and historical architecture of the building occupied by the Missouri Ath-letic Club at 405 Washington Avenue. Steve Krause is the new chairman of this foundation, and we are thankful for his dedication to a place that so many view as their home away from home. The Foundation has provided roughly $1 million in funding during the last few years, greatly assisting in preserving and improving our wonder-ful old building. The ongoing need is great, but all is doable with time and focus along with members like Steve and his new Board. Next, the mission of the MAC Sports Foundation: To further, encourage and recognize outstanding achievements in the field of athletics and, in connection therewith, to select for public recognition those individ-uals who have made outstanding contri-butions to and achievements in the field of sports and athletics. Greg Beekman is the chairman leading this foundation, and we are thankful for his commitment to honoring those who love and excel in athletic competition. The Jack Buck Sports Awards and Hermann Trophy annual events should immediately come to mind . Both are traditions and the “bones” that the MAC was founded upon. There is so much opportunity here to grow and become even more significant in the community and even the world of soccer. Let’s be proud and not forget that the MAC Hermann Award is the most coveted amateur prize in soccer, which is the fastest growing sport in our land. Is there any opportunity there?

And finally, but certainly not least, the mission of the MAC Foundation for the Arts: To assemble, collect, commission, display and maintain significant works of the arts. Paul Weil is the chairman leading the evolution of this foundation. As part of our long-range vision, we are striving to increase our media literacy, develop a library of various works, refresh, add to and maintain our exten-sive collection at the MAC. This foun-dation has every opportunity to make wonderful things happen at your Club for both you and our future generation to enjoy and to be thankful. In my last column and in many con-versations, you have heard me tout our “Three buckets” as the areas where we focus our business energies on contin-uous improvement. I believe this focus has aided us significantly with these key areas of our businesses all ending our fiscal year contributing and in very strong condition. To reiterate, the three key buckets are (1) Membership—new members and more importantly retain-ing our existing members, (2) Cater-ing—filling our catering bucket with parties and events (3) Hotel rooms—boosting hotel room sales. The Foundations Gala is the official kickoff for launching an emphasized focus on our fourth bucket: The MAC’s Foundations. Together with our Board and chairmen, we are developing long-range visions for our foundations, examining how they should look, func-tion, and feel to ultimately bring the most benefit to the Club and you, our members. I can’t wait to see what they look like three to five and 10 years from now! There is much to be thankful for as we look both backwards and as we gaze into our future with hope, confidence and excitement with all the possibilities ahead. Wishing you and your family a blessed Thanksgiving.

See you at the Club,

Wines of the Month 2012 Joullian Chardonnay,Sleepy Hollow Vineyard, Carmel Valley, California

Sleepy Hollow is an award-winning, renowned vine-yard in the Monterey appellation of California. Its soil is ideal for growing the Chardonnay grape, and this barrel-fermented wine offers a mix of apple and a warm smoky, nut flavor, which does not disappoint. Pairs well with seafood, specifically grilled salmon, swordfish, halibut, sea bass, tuna steaks, or a seafood pasta with cream sauce (envision linguini and clams). Roasted chicken or pork loin are also good choices for those who are not seafood lovers. Dine at one of the MAC’s restaurants during the month of November to enjoy a glass of Joullian Chardonnay for $13.50 or share a bottle for $50. This is the last vintage year of this incredible wine so enjoy before it is gone!

2012 lyric by etude pinot noir North Canyon and Fiddlestix Vineyards, Santa Barbara, California

Lyric is described as being reflective of its Californiaregion with a signature silky texture and bright red fruit flavors. Santa Barbara’s lengthy growing season and coastal climate create the perfect combination for growing balanced and concen-trated Pinot Noir fruit. Scents of strawberry and cherry meld with hints of baking spices and finish with a robust red berry flavor, which pairs well with a variety of dishes. Dine at one of the MAC’s restaurants during the month of November to enjoy a glass of Lyric by Etude for $10 or share a bottle for $35.

It has been the most wonderful time of the year for St. Louis sports fans. During the last few weeks at the MAC, the Jack Buck Grille has been filled with fans celebrating Red October as the Cardinals advanced in the postseason, bleeding blue as the Blues kicked-off a new hockey season, and the celebration of the “Greatest Show on Turf” as the Rams played Monday night football.

Three Things All St. Louis Sports Fans Should Do This Time of Year1. SUPPORT THE HOME TEAMShow your St. Louis spirit by purchasing new team gear from the Pro Shops. New Blues, Rams, Tigers, and Billik-ens gear from their fall/winter collection arriv-ing daily. Be the most fashionably dressed sports fan in St. Louis.

2. TAkE THE SHUTTLEBe safe and skip the traffic. If you are going to a Blues or Billikens home game, catch a ride on the MAC’s shuttle. Park in the MAC garage, grab a drink or dinner before the game, then hop aboard the shuttle. For more information, contact Fred Nelson at 314-539-7388.

3. SHARE THE ENTHUSIASM If you are not attending the game, cheer on the home team with other sports fan in the Jack Buck Grille or Sportman’s Club.

REMINDER FOR RAMS GAMESIf you do not have a Rams season parking pass, all gameday parking in the Down-town garage is on a first-come, first-serve basis at posted event rates. Members may still use the garage on Rams Sundays even when not planning to attend the game. Follow these steps:F Upon entering the garage, identify yourself as using the Club but not going to the game. F The parking attendant will ask you to sign a chit, which will have the posted event fee noted, and give you a parking ticket.F You will have until one hour after kickoff to exit the garage and pay the normal hourly rates. If exiting more than one hour after kickoff, the posted event fee will be assessed to your account.

The Charity Tennis Exhibition, affec-tionately called “Smack Down,” is a friendly competition between the Club’s tennis professionals in an exhi-bition format. The event gave mem-bers an opportunity to meet tennis professionals and glimpse their talent. Additionally, members were treated to a poolside dinner, a display of dazzling badminton, delicious dessert offerings in the Stan Musial Grille, raffle draw-ings, and a chance to watch excellent rounds of tennis. Members enjoyed watching the tennis matches and cheering on the pros. This year, Stutz Team Black (Scott Stutz, Max Shapiro, Faycal Ibnabdel-jalil, and Joseph McAllister) took on

Smack Down II was a WIn-WIn tennis event!Powell Team Red (Kenny Powell, Kim Steinmetz, Trey Owens, Jacob Kanter). Spectators enjoyed watching the two teams rally back and forth and demon-strate their abilities. Team Black tri-umphed in the singles, and Team Red prevailed in the doubles. Ultimately, Team Black took the overall win with a 10-8 edge. The event is also a fundraiser for the Missouri Athletic Club’s Charitable Society for Children. The CSC, headed by Sam Hopmeier, helped organize the evening’s events, which included a fun badminton challenge. While guests were enjoying dinner, tennis pros, Faycal Ibnabdeljalil, Kenny Powell, Max Shaprio and Scott Stutz competed

against Governors Dean Eggerding, Beau Reinberg, Tripp Zumwalt, and the MAC’s new squash pro, Adam Bews. The Governors had the upper hand throughout the game, and it should be noted that they found a true “ringer” in Adam. More importantly, they wise-ly chose the right sport with a shuttle-cock “birdie”) that flies nothing like a tennis ball! This event was certainly enjoyable with good food and conversation, en-tertaining badminton and tennis, and helpful to the Assistance League, Kids In The Middle, and Missouri Kids who benefited from more than $4,000 in donations. Thanks to all for a win-win-win event!

Harry Weber is this month’s featured artist in the Downtown Art Gallery. Following his education at Princeton University, Weber served six years in the U.S. Navy, including a year on river patrol boats in Vietnam. He com-piled a compelling series of drawings chronicling his experiences. These are featured at a permanent display of Military Art on the USS Alabama. Weber is well-known for his sculp-tures, which are highly regarded for their sense of movement and vitality. More than 100 have been installed across the country and abroad. His aim is to have his sculptural work show the same life and spontaneity as his sketches. His sculptures of famous sports figures are prominent features at 12 professional and amateur stadiums, including Busch Stadium, and in 2011, he was named the National Sports Artist of the Year. If you are interested in purchasing the work on display, contact Wendy Descher at 314-539-4438 or [email protected].

Bundling these contributions saves time and resourc-es for our members and the Club’s accounting staff. This approach is a convenient and efficient way for members to thank employees for their service and to support the Club’s charitable entities at the same time. Thank you for supporting the Missouri Athletic Club, its employees and foundations.

On Nov. 6, the MAC, in partnership with the Rotary Club of St. Louis, will host its annual Veterans Day Luncheon to salute all who served our country. The Club will recognize the 2014 Hon-ored Veteran of the Year, Robert Fulstone, selected for his ongoing commitment and service to the veteran community, and Harry Weber, the first St. Louis Area Veteran Achievement Award recipient. Fulstone served in the U.S. Army for six years, including a deployment to Vietnam from 1969 to 1970. During this time, he was awarded the Army Commendation Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and Vietnam Service Medal, among other honors. However, Fulstone’s service since his active duty days truly sets him apart. He has shown unwavering support for the military and veterans, and he has been actively involved in the USO of Missouri, chairing both the Nominating and De-velopment Committees. His work helped secure funding for the USO facility at the Lambert Airport’s East Terminal and a mo-bile USO unit. Fulstone participated in the 2004 founding of the St. Louis Veterans Business Resource and more recently supported the grand opening of the new Salvation Army Veterans Residence center. He has been recognized for his work with the St. Louis Area Stand Down Project helping homeless veterans, and he received a citation from the Missouri Veterans Leadership Program. Within the St. Louis community, he served on the boards for the Herbert Hoover Boys & Girls Club, Les Amis, Heat/Up Cool Down St. Louis and the Missouri History Museum. “I have never known Bob to turn down

a request for help from any veteran,” said Stephen Smith in a recommendation letter. “I am sure that many vets at the VA hospi-tal see so much of Bob they must assume he is on staff, but he is there because his ‘brothers’ need him.” Local artist, Harry Weber, is a St. Louis native who earned national prominence for his works honoring significant sports

and historical figures and events. His sports statues are displayed at more than a dozen stadiums across the country, including Busch Stadium. “Harry Weber has been a strong supporter of our military personnel, both active duty and veterans, for decades,” according to Mel Burkart, chair of the Missouri Athletic Club vet-erans committee, which is presenting the award. “After nine years of duty as a Navy officer on both surface vessels and a submarine

during the Vietnam Era, Weber has used his artistic talents to help civilians better understand the duty and the challenges faced by our military,” Burkart added. Please make plans to join us for this special event to honor Robert Fulstone, Harry Weber, and all our nation’s veterans. This year’s featured speaker will be Major General Susan A. Davidson, Commanding General, Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command. General Davidson has held a wide variety of command and staff positions, including deployments in support of Operation Desert Shield, Operation Desert Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom. Her awards and decora-tions include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal and Bronze Star, and she holds master’s degrees in Advanced Military Studies and National Security and Strategic Studies.

On Tuesday, Nov. 11, the Book Club and the Military History Club are co-sponsor-ing a Civil War Dinner at the Downtown Clubhouse. Erwin is the author of three books: Guerrillas in Civil War Missouri, Guerrillas Hunters in Civil War Missouri, and The Homefront in Civil War. Each attendee will receive one of the three books. Erwin will be available to sign his books prior to the event.

ABOUT JAMES ERWINJames Erwin is a Missouri native. He graduated from Missouri State University with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics. After serving in the U.S. Army, he earned an MBA in history from the University of Missouri and JD from the University of Missouri Law School. He practiced law in St. Louis and lives in Kirkwood, Missouri.

BOOk SYNOPSIS Guerrillas in Civil War Missouri tells the stories of guerrillas led by William Quantrill, Bill Anderson, and others (in-cluding future Missouri bank and train robbers Jesse and Frank James) who carried on hit-and-run warfare against soldiers and civilians. Guerrilla Hunters in Civil War Mis-souri covers the Union troops recruited to fight the guerrillas. In over three years of the war these boys, for most were in their teens and early twenties, were engaged in what one of them called “hard service,” and they became hard men. Combat, when it came, was often short, sharp, brutal, and unforgiving. In Missouri neither side showed mercy for defeated foes.

The Homefront in Civil War Missouri Over one thousand Civil War engage-ments were fought in Missouri, and the conflict could not be quarantined from civilian life. In the countryside, the wives and mothers of absent soldiers had to cope with marauders from both sides. Children saw their fathers and brothers beaten, hanged or shot. In the cities, a cheer for Jeff Davis could land a young boy in jail, and a letter to a sweetheart in the Confederate army could get a girl banished from the state. Women volun-teered to care for the flood of wounded and sick soldiers. Slavery crumbled and created new opportunities for black men to serve in the Union army but left their families vulnerable to retaliation at home. The turbulence and bitterness of guerrilla war was everywhere.

Presentation by James Erwin and special guest appearance by Mary Robinson of White House Plantation

MAC PAST »

2009: 5 YEARS AGOF Social media sites Facebook and Twitter are defined, and members are encouraged to use these mediums as a new means of communication with the MAC.F Renovations to the Downtown women’s locker rooms were underway. F All of the players on the St. Louis Blues roster attended the annual A Breakfast for the Blues Backers held in the Missouri Room.

2004: 10 YEARS AGO F St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Scott Rolen is announced as the 2004 MAC Sports Personality of the Year.F Karim Darwish of Cairo, Egypt won the regional squash tournament held at MAC West. He beat the favorite and went on to win the tournament.F A tailor shop opens in the Downtown Club basement along with two new private workstations. F The West Clubhouse announces that its new restaurant will be named after Stan Musial to honor the living legend who dines there on a regular basis.

1999: 15 YEARS AGO F St. Louis Blues defenseman Al MacInnis announced as Sports Personality of the Year award winner. He also won the Norris Trophy during the 1998-1999 season. F Member Tom Berra won a Chevy Blazer in raffle drawing. Each member who successfully recruited a new member was entered into the drawing. This program helped the MAC recruit more than 200 new members that year. F St. Louis Rams fans celebrate a winning team and swarm the Club’s pre-game buffets before heading to the TWA Dome. Everyone is hopeful the Rams will make it to the playoffs. Unbeknownst to fans, the Rams will win the Super Bowl this season.

1989: 25 YEARS AGOF A new computer system was instituted in October, and the system reduced ordering time within the restaurants. F Ten members and guests boarded three buses for a trip to Columbia, MO for the second annual Mizzou Bus Trip. F The Board decided that the two front elevators should be replaced.

1964: 50 YEARS AGOF The MAC Society thronged to the Club’s season-opening party to dance and dine in a nostalgic setting from the riverboat era. “The evening got off to a gay start” and some Dixieland rhythms kept the dance floor pulsating. F KMOX ran an ad with the headline, “What is Radio?” F The city of St. Louis celebrated its 200th birthday.

1939: 75 YEARS AGO F The membership voted to change the name of the organization from Missouri Athletic Association to the Missouri Athletic Club. One staunch supporter of the old name returned his ballot with a poetic petition: “Change from MAA? I must say Nay. Only a dub… Would call it a club.”

1914: 100 YEARS AGO F The Club was in the process of wrecking the old building, which was destroyed in a fire, and erecting a new building. 500 members assembled at a temporary facility and marched for two blocks to the site of the old Club, where the new Club was slated for building. This was “the first stroke for the greatest and best athletic club in the whole country.”F The program for the Big MAA Thanksgiving Turkey Shoot was announced, and 40 turkeys were offered as prizes. F Under the “Smart Things for Club Folk” section it read Try This Puzzle: Think of the name of some man. Write it down. Then go to see the man. Ask him this question: “Are you a member of the MAA?” If he says “No,” tag him and don’t let him get away until he’s signed up. Try it. It’s easy.
