CNC-ACS Section Meeting Highlights
Poster Vendor Night Draws Record Attendance
Over 200 colleagues attended the 10th Annual Poster Vendor Night Exhibit which was
held at Syngenta on April 13th. This event drew the largest attendance for a technical
meeting hosted by the Central NC Section of the ACS. Sixteen vendors displayed their
products and forty-eight posters highlighting chemical research in the Triad, RTP and
Charlotte regions were presented. The local section awarded prizes for the best student
posters. The judging process was difficult because of the high quality of all of the
student posters. Awards were given for:
First Place:
Human 2-keto-4-hydroxy-glutarate Aldolase (KHGA), a Promising New Target for
Modulating Oxalate Production in Primary Hyperoxaluria Patients ,Travis Riedel and
Dr. W. Todd Lowther, Department of Biochemistry, Wake Forest University School of
Medicine
Second Place:
Effects of Resveratrol and Galangin on hCYP1A1 and hCYP1B1 Activation of
Benzo[a]Pyrene (B[a]P) and B[a]P(-)7,8-diol (BPD) to Toxic and Mutagenic
Metabolites, Patricia D. Durant1, Sandra Leone-Kabler
2, Alan J. Townsend
2
1 Department of Molecular Medicine & Translational Sciences, Wake Forest University
School of Medicine, 2 Department of Biochemistry, Wake Forest University School of
Medicine
Third Place:
Characterization of Protein Structure and Stability in the Presence of Ionic Liquids,
Matthew Van Vorst, Jonathan Trullinger and Joanna Krueger, Department of
Chemistry, University of North Carolina at Charlotte
Activities coordinated by the Central NC section do not happen by themselves and Poster Vendor Night
is no exception. Special thanks goes out to the PVN Organizing Committee (Bill Eberle, Kent Kabler,
TJ Mayer, Johanna Mazlo and Robert Yokley), Poster Coordinator (Johanna Mazlo), Poster Judges
(Kathryn Bergman, Cecil Dharmasri, Dana DiDonato, Amber Goetz, Evangelia Kotsikorou, Dan
Minnema, Jeff Perine, Sameer Tyagi and Cherilyn Strader), and to volunteers (Patricia Duffy, Janice
Foushee, Doug Linebarrier, Mary Katsikas, Carol McKillican and Rebecca Roberts). The CNC-ACS
would also like to express a special thank you to Syngenta for providing the facilities for our venue.
Syngenta’s support for the past ten years has been instrumental in the success of Poster Vendor Night.

LOCAL STUDENTS WIN CHANCE TO QUALIFY FOR INTERNATIONAL CHEMISTRY OLYMPIAD
The Central NC Section of the American Chemical Society has announced the names of 9 outstanding high school chemistry students. The students participated in a national exam that may qualify them to become members of the U. S. National Chemistry Olympiad team that will compete in the 42nd International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) in Tokyo, Japan, July 19-28, 2010. The students are:
Jacob Simon and Ben Stallworth, Forsyth Country Day School (Peter Funk, teacher), Jay Kennedy, Westchester Country Day School (Janis McDonald), Kenan Courtney and Lewis
Brown, Grimsley High School (Sandra Strubinger), Steven Sauer and Nicholas Lenze, Northern Guilford (Patricia Plump), Sam Wilson, RJ Reynolds (Joshua Bragg), Heming Ge, Mt. Tabor
(Taryn Kendig).
The IChO involves a series of theoretical exams, laboratory exercises, and other activities aimed at identifying the best chemistry students from participating nations from around the world. The 9 local nominees are among nearly 1,000 nationwide that took the national qualifying exam. These students took their exam at High Point University on April 23. Twenty students will be identified and will undergo intensive training June 1-16 at the U. S. Air Force Academy in Colorado. The top four will be chosen to represent the U.S. in the 42nd IChO competition. Founded in 1876 and chartered by Congress, the American Chemical Society is a nonprofit scientific and educational organization dedicated to the advancement of chemistry in the public interest. The Central North Carolina Section is one of 190 across the nation serving more than 160,000 members.
