What a weekend! Webrought some moreSpitfires home. They arean early Mk. I and earlyMk. II. They are socomplete mechanically, the Mk I should berestored. Sadly, the timespent in the back yardhas taken the best of the Mk. II. I don’t know ifI’m bragging or complaining!

Sometimes I think the hobby has become adisease. I bought the first Spitfire as a “Fridaynight cruise to the Sonic” car. Then atTriumphest Pete Peterson told me about his1966 Spitfire with a hard top. Well, the pricewas right and it came to live in our back yard. The total is now four Spitfires and two GT 6s.Not to mention the London taxi and a DKW. Itsort of grows doesn’t it?

We do have the opportunity to participate in theBritish Car Week at the end of May. We havebeen invited to a picnic in Prescott to kick offthe British Car Week along with the ArizonaMini Owners. Here is a great way to let peopleknow about the hobby. On the B.E.A.T., I wassurprised at the number of people whorecognized the car and told me a story abouttheir Spitfire. One person was amazed to findthe cars were still around.

Drive the Triumphs! Let them be seen!

MINUTES OF THE APRIL MEETING

John Nuss opened the meeting at 7:15. Ap-proximately 32 people attended the April meet-ing at F-1 Race Factory. We have one newmember, Lee Watts with a Spitfire.

The minutes were approved as printed. TheTreasurer was absent, so no report. It wassuggested we print extra newsletters for poten-tial businesses to encourage them to take outadvertising with us. John Horton, our rep toAAHC announced bill HB-2136 passed with noopposition. Rep. Nelson had lied to everyonesaying that all car clubs were in agreement withthe bill. This bill violates the Constitution withAmendments # 1 & 4. It was agreed that thisshould be taken to court & contested.

Under New Business, Beth Horton suggestedputting a link to Stitches Unlimited on the clubwebsite, and Rich Aubert said that would be noproblem. Mike is looking for a TR4, 250 orTR6. There will be no breakfast run in Aprilbecause of the B.E.A.T. DCTRA will host thebreakfast run in May, the 3rd Sunday, May 16th.John & Beth Horton volunteered to plan theevent. We were reminded that British CarWeek is May 22-30.

It is reported that there is a picture of KathyNuss in the February-March issue of TriumphWorld, and John wants to see it. The meetingadjourned at 7:45.

Deta

Our meeting April 21st was a large success,we had close to 70 people show up who wantto help defeat HB2136. The MG club sponsoring the All British SwapMeet on Saturday, April 24th held a raffle, andpeople attended from as far away as Prescottand Winslow. It was a beautiful day, and thosepresent had a great time discussing their LittleBritish Cars, not to mention the free coffee anddonuts provided by Jim Medland and DeltaMotorsports. There was a very nice 1960 MGAalong with a number of parts up for sale.

Visitors also had theopportunity to tour theDelta Motorsportsfacility, where theyenjoyed perusing thelending library ofautomobile and aviationmagazines, such as Motor Trend, Grass RootsMotor Sports, Jaguar and Jenson Journals,Vintage Racecar, Thouroughbred and ClassicCars, and others. Haynes manuals are alsoavailable for purchase.

The April DCTRA outing was a trip to the BoyceThompson Arboretum near Superior for theSpring Herb Festival on Saturday, April 10th.John and Kathy Nuss drove their Spitfire, whileRich and Diane Aubert and Art Wallis relied onalternative transportation. The Corvair Club ofTucson was also present with a number of theirrear-engine drive Chevys on display in a parkingarea near the picnic grounds.

The DCTRAcontingentenjoyed a picniclunch afterwalking throughthe greenhousesand the SmithInterpretiveCenter. Wetoured through

the cactus gardens along the Silver King Wash, continuing past Ayer Lake, we then walkedtowards the Sonoran Desert uplands, climbingup toward Picketpost House, the former resi-dence of Boyce Thompson. Winding down thecorkscrew trail, we arrived in the cool greeneryof the Queen Creek Natural Area, where wesaw the three-room hole-in-the-wall ClevengerHouse. We walked on through the Herb Gar-den, where the festival was being held, musicwas being played, various herbal products werefor sale, and demonstrations were being given.

microbrewery across the street from thecourthouse. Then it was back on the road.Kathy and I took off in Chris and Georgette’sMINI and they drove the nearly flawlesslyoperating Trevor. Actually this was the mostunsatisfactory part of the drive. I got in back ofan Alfa driver who was obviously enjoying thescenery.

At the Cottonwood show and social we waitedfor our car only to hear some report of it on thetrailer… Say it isn’t so! But, it was. Fortunatelywe found Jerry, who was willing to let us parkthe car under cover until we could rescue it.Now was my chance to drive the MINI under

better circumstances. Well just my luck I got inback of a Bronco driver admiring the scenery.

Sunday was a special day too. We met withfriends of Murph and celebrated her life withscattering ashes in Oak Creek Canyon.

Thankfully, Betsy Kavash brought her Volvowagon so we all could get home. Smedley didhave a gas tank issue, which was solved byadding an auxiliary gas tank. But, that’s anotherstory. Just ask Deborah Cooke about the latenight dash from Flagstaff.

Epilogue: No word on the engine yet. We justgot home (Monday evening, April19th) and gotthe car off the trailer a few hours ago.

My Sports Car Habit!Chapter 2 by Jim Bauder

There is more to the entire 1977 saga! A monthor so after I bought the TR6, a friend called andasked if I was still looking for a TR3. I said that Ihad bought a TR6. He then said that was toobad because I really had to see this TR3 that afriend owned. He described it as being in goodrunning shape, complete, and cheap!

I went to look at it and it was as my friend said. For some reason the current and secondowner, had painted the car an unsightly orange, similar to that ’55, ’56 Chevy orange! It was anice TR3 though, very well worn, but all thereand everything worked, even the gauges andall of the electricals! In the trunk there werealmost all of the original tools, just rollingaround, including the grease gun! In the glovebox was the original Owners Manual in theoriginal envelope from the dealer! There wereno “previous owner” botched wiring changes,no holes cut into the dash or glove box, etc. Itwas just the driver I was looking for earlier! Ijust had to buy it! The owner wanted $1500 andwe settled for $1375! I was the owner of tworunning TRs!

As you may remember, I eventually sold theTR6. The TR3 was put into temporary storagein a friend’s carport for many months. After I gotremarried, I moved it into our garage where itjust sat for 8 or 9 years. Then for some reason Idecided to get it running again, it was in ’92 or’93. My brother Randy and I did some basictune up, bled the hydraulics, put fresh gas in itand fired it up. I went to a Triumph TravelersSports Car Club (TTSCC) meeting and joinedthe club. Over the next several months I droveit on a couple of club events and noticed itwould overheat at the drop of a hat! I flushedthe cooling system, put fresh coolant in it and it

was better but not much. Randy and I tried togo to the Autumn Classic British Sports CarConcours held that year on the other side ofthe Santa Cruz Mountains. We almost got tothe start of the mountain grade but the TR wasoverheating already and it was only 7:00 AM!We returned home and drove his Blazer to theshow.

Over the next several months we disassembledalmost the whole car and were well on our wayto a frame off restoration! Over the next almost5 years we completed rebuilding or replacingalmost every part on the car. The only work onthe car that we didn’t personally do was theengine machining, and the paint and bodywork!Everything else we did ourselves, with somehelp from a couple of club members from timeto time. I showed the completed frame andengine as a rolling chassis on its trailer at the1999 Palo Alto All British Car Show and wasawarded the People’s Choice Award, althoughthere must have been some ballot stuffing byfellow TTSCC members! We had the carcompleted in time for the Palo Alto Concoursd’Elegance held in June of 2000. The car tooka 1st in Class! I was absolutely flabbergastedand ecstatic! We drove the car to PortlandOregon for the VTR National Convention thatsame year, again a 1st in Class. The car hascontinued to show well and I am continuouslyamazed and of course delighted!

The car continued to overheat at the drop of ahat! Over the next year or so, I installed a new5 core radiator and a new high volume waterpump from Ken Gillanders. All of that helped, however, the 12 inch pusher fan that I installedseems to have solved the problem, even herein Arizona!

I am now in the process of changing from wirewheels to the stock TR steel wheels for greaterreliability. I will continue to drive and show thiscar as long as I own it. It is a joy to drive andhas been relatively trouble free, while beingdriven on some very long runs in all kinds ofweather.

I am thinking about the next chapter in MySports Car Habit story. I am currently looking fora TR4A or perhaps a TR250 to restore! Whoknows what the last chapter will be?

Several DCTRA e-mails were devoted to Webercarburetors this past month, consequently, thisarticle is the first of three by Terri Wakeman, whichwill cover Weber DCOE carburetor theory ofoperation and tuning as it applies to the TriumphTR3 and TR4 engine.

Edoardo Weber developed his first carburetors inthe 1920’s. What made and still makes hiscarburetors so appealing is the adaptability of hisdesigns. Carburetor functions that are cast into thebodies of other carburetors are separate tunableparts in Webers. You can change the size of theventuri itself. This means Webers can be tunedspecifically to individual engines to work best withthe cam, exhaust system and compression ratio ofyour particular engine. They can be tuned forexcellent fuel mileage, maximum power or anyplacein-between. Most people who buy DCOEs intend totune for maximum power and not maximum fueleconomy. If you are tuning for maximum fueleconomy stick with the low jet and venturi numbers.

The problem with extreme adaptability is that it is atwo edged sword . One edge allows you to closelytune the carburetor to your engine, the other edge

leaves you wandering, lost in a vast myriad of tuningcomponent possibilities, each affecting the functionof the others. In the following articles we hope toprovide a tuning map of sorts, specifically for theTR2 through TR4A engine. Beware of looking toother brand same displacement engines for cluesabout carb size and jetting. The TR engine is lowrevving and high torque. The engines that camefrom the factory with DCOEs tend to be low torquehigh revving engines. Their jetting and venturi sizewill be wrong for the TR engine.

The engine used in the TR2 through 4A and mostMorgans of the same years is a low revving torqueyengine. There are major crank shaft harmonicsaround 5200, 5800 and 6200 RPM. The one at 5200RPM tends to break the crank at the base of theflywheel mounting flange if you spend much timethere. The one at 6200 is at the middle of the crankand tends to beat up the middle main bearing.Triumph factory race cars were red lined at 5000RPM (same as a stock engine) so they would notbreak the crank on a long race. The factory TR4 rallycars that had 42DCOE 8s were jetted for powerbelow 5000 RPM. Apparently some factory rallyTR4s were fitted with 45DCOE 9 carbs instead of the42s.

There is a harmonic dampener kit currently available(Racetorations in the UK, British Frame & Engine inthe US) that tames the 5200 RPM harmonic quite abit and possibly the others as well. Nitriding thecrank increases its hardness and is a must if youwant to rev the engine. So are such things asbalancing the engine, lightening the rockerassembly, going to an aluminium flywheel and goingto stronger valve springs and retainers. Also beaware that current stock non asbestos clutch disklinings seem to come apart if you spend much timeat or above 6000 RPM

When the TR4 engine was fitted with DCOEs fromthe factory during the sixties (Morgan Super Sportand Triumph factory rally cars) or by individuals forracing, the carb most often used was a 42DCOE 8.These carbs have been unavailable for a long time.So our choice boils down to the smaller 40DCOE orlarger 45DCOE. Which you pick will depend uponhow the engine is built, how you intend to drive thecar and what you wish the red line to be.

The prefix number on the DCOE is the diameter ofthe throttle plate (the throttle bore) in mm; DCmeans “doppio corpo” (double throat); O means“orizzontale (horizontal); E means it is a die castcarburetor; and the number or number and letter

suffix is the variation type. Except there seem to beseveral variations to most variation suffixes. Youwant to be very sure that the DCOEs you purchaseare indeed matched pairs. You will never get twoDCOEs to work properly together if they aredifferent variations.

The Weber choke is a removable venturi. The largerthe choke (venturi), the more air fuel mixture canflow through it and the less flexible the engine willbe at lower RPMs. The smaller the choke the betterthe low & mid end is and the sooner it will startrestricting flow at higher RPMs. The ideal choke sizeis the minimum size that provides good flow at yourmaximum usable RPM. Going larger than that costsyou low end and mid RPM power without increasinghigh end power.

Here is an excerpt from an e-mail I received fromKas Kastner (12/9/03) on the subject of TR engineair flow through the intake.

“Just for the books, in the ancientpast I remember the so called“optimum gas speed” for best flowwas 325 fps. Anyone rememberdifferently? Interesting enough thismight explain a little why lots of

times increasing the size of the inletvalves does NOTHING for thepower and may even be a deterant.”

Just a reminder that bigger is not always better. Here is what I have picked up as choke rules ofthumb for the Triumph four cylinder engine.

36 mm choke - race engine or highly modifiedstreet engine with 87 or 89mm pistons redline 6000RPM or higher. High speed power is the mostimportant but mid range power is also important. You want the engine to pull strongly through 6500RPM. This would be a good size for most preparedrace engines expected to be used on high speedcircuits. 36 chokes may be overkill on a hot streetengine. 38 chokes may be a possibility on all outtrack race engines that do not need mid rangepower.

34mm choke - modified street engine, autocross,86, 87mm pistons, “fast street” cam (260-280degrees) or longer duration. Wide power curvepossible with correct cam. Very slightly better lowend power than 36 chokes but starts running out ofbreath at around 6200 RPM or a little higherdepending upon cam and flow characteristics fromair horn to tail pipe. This would be a good size for

Isle of Wight Walking Festival8th – 23rd May 2004

Did you know that every May the Isle ofWight hosts the UK’s largest walkingfestival?

Not surprising when you learn that it has over500 miles of well-maintained and signpostedfootpaths, around 30 miles of HeritageCoastline while more than half the Island isrecognised as an Area of Outstanding NaturalBeauty. Add to this, good qualityaccommodation and better than averageweather, and it’s easy to see why walking is sopopular on this holiday isle.

The biggest walking festival in Britain, Isle ofWight Walking Festival, is back and set to takeplace from 8th – 23rd May 2004. With over 160walks to its credit the sixth annual WalkingFestival will have such diverse themes as Forts,Castles and beautiful Bays and A Red SquirrelSafari as well as ghost walks, lantern-litevening strolls and for the first time ever, storytime walks. Most walks are free and all areled by volunteers who are happy to share theirlove of the Island with you. Whatever your ageand ability, the 2004 Festival programme willoffer a walk that you are sure to enjoy.

The full programme is now available at http://www.islandbreaks.co.uk/ or for a printed copyemail [email protected]

auto crossing and fast driving where there are tightcurves and you have the need to accelerate quicklyas well as run at high speeds.

33 mm choke - same as above but with rev limit ofaround 5000 RPM, better low end power. Probablybetter suited for a fast street car with 86-87mmpistons.

32 mm choke - basically stock or mildly warmed upengine, 83 or 86mm pistons, stock or mild “street”cam, 5000 RPM red line (stock engine rev limit).Highway cruiser with lots of low speed flexibility. Can be tuned for good fuel economy. Smallerchokes down to 30 can be considered for stockengines being tuned for maximum economy andregular town and highway driving.

Here is where you choose your DCOE. The largestchoke that will work properly in a 40DCOE is a 34choke. The smallest choke that will work properly ina 45DCOE is a 34 choke. While larger chokes areavailable for 40DCOEs and smaller ones areavailable for 45DCOEs they will not work as well.

If you intend to keep the engine at or below 5000RPM, the 40DCOE will provide you with your bestall around power curve. This will handle fast streetapplications quite well and give you lots of low endflexibility. The 34s will give you fast street and youcan choke down for additional low end grunt orbetter fuel economy. As a comparison, the 2L AlfaRomeo engine was equipped with 40DCOEs and32mm chokes from the factory for both power andeconomy. So this combination should provideadequate power and economy for a 2L ex-tractorengine. If you have a stock crank and no harmonicdampener keep the engine red line at 5000 RPMand stay with 40DCOE Webers. 45DCOEs would beoverkill and may not work quite as well in yourapplication. If you want to rev higher, nitride thecrank and get the harmonic dampener kit. You onlyneed 45DCOEs if you are track racing. The 36chokes can provide a little extra with the wild camand 12:1 or higher compression. 45DCOEs with 34chokes will work fine for high RPM fast street orautocross but so should 40DCOEs with 34 chokes. No wonder the factory chose the no longer available42DCOEs.

The rule of thumb seems to be to fit the smallestchoke that will give you full power at your maximumusable RPM. The smaller choke will provide betteroverall flexibility and power. Going to a larger chokewill allow you maximum power at peak RPMs butwill reduce low end power.

I made the mistake of buying the carbs first thendeciding what choke to use. As it turns out thesmallest choke that works properly with 45DCOEsalso works well on my engine. A slightly smallerchoke might work even better.

Make an honest evaluation of your engine anddriving habits then choose the most likely correctchoke size. THEN choose the DCOE carburetor sizethat fits the choke and purchase your carbs as amatched pair from a reliable source. Order matchedcarbs equipped with your best guess of venturis andjets from a dealer that will set them up to yourspecifications.

In the Venturi(choke)shown, thesize numberis stampedon the frontwhere visible

looking down the barrel. This one is a 32mm chokefor a 45 DCOE. Auxiliary venturi shown on right side. The size is stamped along the outer side and is notreadable unless the auxiliary venturi has beenremoved. The little centre venturi is where fuel fromthe main jet is drawn into the air flow. Both venturisare held in place by 10 mm fixing bolts on theunderside. The fixing bolts are drilled for tie wiringand can either be kept secure by tie wire or by a locktab as shown. Because of the thinness of theventuris they hold in place, there is very little torqueon these bolts. The lock tabs provided by the factoryhave been known to loosen and allow a bolt to backout and fall off. The result is a lose venturi and athroat that doesn’t operate correctly in the high 2000RPM and higher range. The best thing you can dofor reliability once you have decided upon thecorrect choke and auxiliary venturi combination is totoss the lock tabs and wire the bolts together.

At the very top of the picture you can see part of thefloat bowl bottom access plate. This can be removedfor thorough cleaning of the bowl under the jetstacks. This area is inaccessible from the top withthe cover off. In our next issue, we will discussauxiliary chokes and jets.
