The Elemental Analysis Facility hosts portable x-ray fluorescence spectrometers, a mass spectrometer, and two lasers to determine the chemical composition of ancient artifacts. Studies undertaken in this lab aim at addressing questions regarding the technological skills of the ancient craftsmen, the localization of the production sites, sources of raw materials, and the circulation of finished objects, thus providing a better understanding of ancient civilizations.

BONEDAGGERSFROMNEWGUINEADaggers carved from the leg bones of the cassowary—a large flightless bird related to the Ostrich and Emu—are made and worn by men in many parts of New Guinea. In addition to their potential use as weapons, these elaborately decorated daggers are symbolically important and are often used in male initiation rites. Find out about the anthropological research we are carrying out on our collections of these daggers, exploring the patterning of culture on the world’s second largest and most linguistically diverse island.

THECURIOUSCASEOFHANDYNASTYGREENGLAZECERAMICSThe Han Dynasty in China saw the creation of low fire ceramics with colorful “cucumber” green glazes.
