The number nine in Chinese culture is considered auspicious because it sounds the same as “long-

lasting.” Western culture has the Nine Worthies, nine historical figures believed to personify the ideals of chivalry. We, however, believe that nine represents long-lasting perfection, achieved through determined effort. We recall MAXX-M’s journey and realise that after nine wonderful years, it is time for us to change and get even better.

We have long been a reference to our readers for the best in travel and accommodation, and we have worked closely with all our partners to present the very best things in life. It has not always been easy and there have been some challenges along the way. Our current edition and the coming issues through the end of this year will reflect our transformation from a travel and lifestyle magazine to a more sophisticated form in terms of layout and content. This is the first step to a better MAXX-M.

Irreplaceable as the travel magazine that I enjoy reading at my desk. Impressive themes, especially the cover stories that always provide travel inspiration. One article that was interesting to read was about “Exotic Asia”, especially Macau. It was featured last May and was helpful for planning a personal trip. Also not to be missed was “Well-Being Beauty.” Loved this article so much! Didn’t you?

Holidays, trips, travelling, whatever you call it. Who does not like to travel? Almost everyone I know does. Some people love familiar surroundings, others seek constant change and get an adrenalin rush from the unfamiliar. I fall in the latter category.

My Kind of Holiday

Page 10: MAXX-M OCT-NOV 9 BEST THING

First of all is what I call the “Standard” holiday. That means going to some not-so-unusual destination. These are

mostly famous cities where nice hotels, a choice of foods and transportation are all guaranteed. With this kind of holiday, I know what to expect. I know which restaurants to book, which hotels to stay at, which galleries to visit and which plays or operas to see.

Then comes the “Unusual” holiday. This involves going off the beaten tourist path and heading to more unexplored destinations. Countries like Uzbekistan, Poland, Sri Lanka, Lebanon, Nepal, Syria and Iran are very much appealing to me. When I go to these countries I consciously adopt a different mind-set. The standard of accommodation can be different, but while it may not be luxury, I can still find comfortable hotels. food can be an interesting challenge, but culturally I find this kind of holiday rewarding.

I remember more than a decade ago going to Turkey, South Africa, Morocco, India, Jordan and Burma. A few people raised their eyebrows and asked me why those destinations. It was the same thing when I went to Sri Lanka and the Seychelles on my honeymoon 18 years ago.

for the past four years I have devoted myself to this type of travel. It is not exactly a holiday, since I am usually busy attending photography workshops, researching and shooting photo essays. I love this kind of travel. I have the chance to meet international documentary photographers and photojournalists, and I always come home with a new experience and knowledge from telling stories through my lens.

In June 2012, after a long hiatus, I had the opportunity to revisit Cape Town. I went for a documentary photography workshop dedicated to non-profit organizations and visited an animal clinic in Khayelitsha

township just outside Cape Town. for 10 full days I went back and forth to the clinic to volunteer my time doing documentary photography, developing a story in photos of the relationship between the animals and their owners, the animals and the veterinarians and the clinic staff, and between the animals themselves. The digital images that I produced were then donated to the clinic so they could use them to generate donations to support their work.

The clinic runs on private donations for all its work, including a mobile clinic. They collect dogs and cats for free spaying or neutering, and also visit areas where most of the residents don’t have transportation to take their pets in to the clinic.

I spent 10 days shooting at the clinic, from the morning to the late afternoon, going back and forth between my comfortable hotel in Cape Town and the township. But the weekends were devoted to other pursuits. There was a master

Page 11: MAXX-M OCT-NOV 9 BEST THING

class in South African wine tasting and a visit to Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned. Seeing a flock of penguins marching along together was a rare delight, and long lunches soaking in the atmosphere of Camps Bay with new friends was relaxing.

Then in July I took part in another “workshop holiday,” in Chiang Mai, northern Thailand. I spent seven

days shooting at an elephant hospital run by a non-profit organization – the world’s first hospital dedicated to elephants. Some of the injured elephants were victims of landmines along the Burmese border, some were mistreated and overworked by their owners, and others had eye or digestive problems. It was heartbreaking to see such majestic creatures in pain, but the images I produced will hopefully help them

raise awareness amongst the general public and generate more donations.

Every type of holiday has its merits. But photography workshops and doing volunteer work for non-profit organizations is particularly rewarding. I know that I have given back and contributed something, no matter how small.

“Every type of hol iday has i ts mer i ts . But photography workshops and doing volunteer work for non-prof i t organizat ions is part icular ly rewarding. ”

Few Scandinavian cities carry as much history in their old bricks and beautiful windows as Tallinn, the capital of Estonia. This is not just a pretty city by the Baltic Sea; it offers a lifetime of memories even if you spend just a day exploring its many corners.

The Estonia

Page 13: MAXX-M OCT-NOV 9 BEST THING

There is something about travel, exploring new destinations, that sweeps away fatigue and propels you forward. The

opportunity to see something new, breathe in the air of an unfamiliar city and trace its history, it keeps travellers moving forward, no matter how tired their feet may be or how enticing that hotel bed may appear. So it was during my recent visit to Tallinn, a day-trip that I squeezed into my itinerary during my trip from Helsinki to Amsterdam.

The staff of my hotel in Helsinki informed me that it was only 1.5 hours by ferry from Helsinki’s South Harbour to Tallinn Port, so I wasted no time in grabbing my pack and cruising across the Gulf of finland. As I took the bus into the city centre of Tallinn my spirits sank. Gazing out the window at the unremarkable landscape, I feared I had made a bad decision crossing the gulf. As I soon discovered, however I had nothing to fear and Tallinn was worth the effort.

Legging it My impression of Estonia changed drastically as my bus approached Tallinn’s central bus station. The station welcomes busses and trams, which pass through the heart of the city, tracing its history from medieval glory to the modern face of Tallinn.

My travel guide suggested that while making my way through the most amazing part of Tallinn, its medieval city centre, I should explore each street carefully and adopt a favourite. The reason is that the streets in the old part of Tallinn are unique and easy to distinguish from each another. There’s Pikk Jalg and Luhike Jalg, otherwise known as Long Leg and Short Leg, the two curious streets that connect the Upper and Lower Town. Because of their strange names, old tour guides used to joke that Tallinn “limps.” Joining them at the bottom is Rataskaevu, with its picturesque wheel well. Superstitious locals, believing a water spirit lived in the well, used

to regularly toss stray cats into its depths as sacrifices to keep the spirit from flooding the town.

The longest Old Town street is Pikk, whose name simply means long. There you’ll find Old Town’s impressive guild houses, St. Olav’s Church and other architectural treasures. Parallel to Pikk is Lai, which means Wide. There’s also Viru, the most travelled and commercially developed Old Town street, the quaint and narrow Muurivahe with its boutiques, Vene with its monastery, church and restaurants, Saiakang, or White Bread Passage, the shortest street in the city, and Katariina kaik, or St. Catherine’s Passage, Old Town’s

most romantic street. These are just the better-known ones.

The best way to explore old Tallinn is by foot although the city provides trams and busses. And the best place to see Tallinn from high ground is to hike up Toompea Hill. According to myth, the hill was built on top of the grave of a legendary Estonian king, Kalev, but more historically, its solid limestone was the site of the Danish castle that founded the city in 1219. Today, it’s the place to drink in some of the best views of the city.

A landmark of a different kind is the ex-KGB headquarters where the

24

Page 14: MAXX-M OCT-NOV 9 BEST THING

secret police detained and tortured suspected dissidents. A Soviet-era joke had it that this was the tallest building in Estonia: even from the basement, you could see Siberia. Interrogations were conducted in the basement and you can see even today how the windows were crudely cevered up with concrete to mute the sound.

garLic LoverStrolling around Tallinn in the middle of summer is comfortable, without the overpowering heat of most locations, due to its geographical proximity to the North Pole. Still, I needed an energy boost to continue my perambulations around the city.

As usual, I fixed on a local delicacy to get a taste, literally, of the city. There are plenty of bars, cafes and lavish restaurants in Tallinn, and I took a seat in one on a corner of Long Leg, across from the Tallinn Town Hall. It was called Balthasar and according to the waiter it was Estonia’s first garlic restaurant. It occupies part of the medieval building of the Town Hall Apothecary. The building was first mentioned in 1422 and the apothecary is still in business today, making it the oldest pharmacy in Europe.

The restaurant had an aristocratic atmosphere, with its grand wooden interior and large windows overlooking Old Town’s most famous square. Just about everything on the menu involved garlic, including the ice cream. The cuisine of Estonia is normally dependent on the seasons and is dominated by what might be called simple peasant food. However, I enjoyed my garlic dish in a hidden corner of Balthasar,

watching Estonians go about their lives on a cool summer day.

Shop for the BeStIt seems like the global economic crisis has not spread to this Baltic country. There were plenty of Estonians strolling along Viru street, popping in and out of the many elegant boutiques. In general, Tallinn is a great place for those itching to spend.

The best places to find top fashion labels, shoes, perfume and the like are the elegant boutiques along Old Town’s Viru and Muurivahe streets, and the large, full-service department stores and malls that have recently been appearing all over Tallinn. A required stop on any shopping tour of Tallinn is the outdoor knit market on Muurivahe, where craftswomen sell their knitted products in the shadow of the town wall. Even more intriguing for the adventurous shopper is St. Catherine’s Passage. Here in medieval-style workshops run by the Katariina Guild’s artists, onlookers watch as glasswork, ceramics, leather goods, quilts and other items are created right before their eyes.

a Warm nordic adieuOld Town is filled with a certain buzz once the day winds down and the after-hours crowd takes to the streets. Sports bars, hip lounges, cellar dives all throng with life. With so many bars, pubs and clubs squeezed into the same small area, it’s easy for revellers to stumble merrily from one spot to the next, compare notes and find a place that suits their mood. It doesn’t have to be a wild night either: the town caters just as much to visitors who’d rather grab a

pint and watch a football match, sit by the fire sipping cognac or share a bottle of wine with an old friend.

Tallinn has a lot going for – its medieval charm, high-quality shops and restaurants, and English-speaking population are just some of its pluses. The city is big enough and interesting enough to explore for days, but also small and compact enough to give you the full Tallinn experience in just a few hours. On my way back to the port I realised that if Tallinn is not enough of an escape, there are some fantastic day-trips that will put you in touch with Estonian nature and history. from the islands off the coast of Tallinn to vast national park areas to curious nearby towns, there are plenty of fascinating places to see. But time goes by so fast and I had to get back to Helsinki, taking with me wonderful memories of Tallinn.

Komodo iSLandIf you are lucky enough to be in Indonesia, you don’t have to go far for one of the world’s great attractions. Komodo Island is one of the wonders of the world and offers three different experiences in one location. One of those experiences is the chance to get up close and personal with an ancient creature that looks like it lumbered out of the pages of a fairy tale.

Komodo Island is home to the mighty Komodo dragon, a creature that harkens back to the age of the dinosaurs. Komodo Island is located in East Nusa Tenggara province, in West Manggarai district. There are about 2,500 dragons on the island and they make for a great photo opportunity, but don’t get too close, they have sharp teeth.

Komodo Island is a Unesco World Heritage Site. It is part of a little archipelago that includes Rinca Island, Padar Island and Gili Motang. Of these three islands, Rinca is the most famous and boasts beautiful beaches, a mangrove forest and some rolling savannah. Rinca Island also offers some inviting spots for diving and snorkelling, including Pink Beach, Batu Bolong and Tatawa Island.

taBLe mountainThere are no words to describe the absolutely unique Table Mountain in South Africa. The mountain gets its name from its flat top, the only one of its kind in the world. Table Mountain, with Devil’s Peak to the east and Lion’s Head to the west, forms a dramatic backdrop to Cape Town. This sweep of towering mountains forms the natural amphitheatre of City Bowl and Table Bay harbour.

Table Mountain is part of Table Mountain National Park. The air high up on the slopes of the mountain is cool and the moisture condenses to form a kind of tablecloth. South Africans call it a “tablecloth of clouds.” The national park is alive with creatures of all sorts, including dassies, also known as rock rabbits,

porcupines, mongooses, snakes, turtles, African wild cats and more.

Table Mountain is a unique destination with plenty of exciting activities on offer. Try the Table Mountain Cableway. At the upper cable station visitors can drink in the golden landscape stretching from Cape Town, Table Bay and Robben Island to the north, and the Atlantic seaboard to the west and south. Table Mountain Cableway takes passengers from the lower cable station on Tafelberg Road, about 302 metres above sea level, to the top of the mountain.

pamuKKaLeIf Komodo Island has mighty lizards and South Africa has Table Mountain, Turkey has its own unique tourist attraction, known as Pamukkale. Meaning “cotton castle,” Pamukkale is a natural site with hot springs and terraces of carbonate minerals left by the flowing water. Pamukkale’s terraces are made of travertine, a sedimentary rock deposited by water from the hot springs. It is located in Denizli province in southwestern Turkey, in the River Menderes valley.

Pamukkale was established by the ancient Greco-Romans, with the Byzantine city of Hierapolis being built on top of it. for thousands of years, people have bathed in the pools here.

The former Roman bath of the ancient city of Hierapolis has been the site of the Hierapolis Archaeology Museum since 1984. Alongside historical artefacts from Hierapolis, there are also artefacts from Laodiceia, Colossae, Tripolis, Attuda and other towns of the Lycos valley. The museum also has a large section devoted to artefacts found at Beycesultan Huyuk that includes some of the most beautiful examples of Bronze Age craft.

Pamukkale has become a major tourist destination in Turkey. As recently as the mid-20th century, hotels were built over the ruins of Hierapolis.

An approach road was carved from the valley over the terraces, and motorbikes were allowed to go up and down the slopes.

chocoLate hiLLSThe Chocolate Hills in the Philippines look like giant molehills rising 30 to 50 metres. They are covered with grass that changes from green in the rainy season to brown in the dry season, hence the giving the hills their name. The hills look like a human creation but they are in fact natural dunes formed by natural processes without any human intervention. Some geologists believe the hills were formed by the weathered formations of a kind of marine limestone on top of a layer of impermeable clay.

The Chocolate Hills are located in the province of Bohol. There is an observation hill near the complex, and a mere 214 steps will get you to the top and its view over some of the 1,260 to 1,776 hills scattered over 50 square kilometres. The hills are so famous and beloved that they are in the provincial flag and seal.

There are two local legends surrounding the creation of the hills. One of them is that two giants threw stones and sand at each other in a battle that lasted several days. When they were finally exhausted, they made up and became friends and left the island, but left behind the mess they made, thousands and thousands of rocks and piles of sand that became the Chocolate Hills. Another story is about Arogo, a young and very strong giant who fell in love with a girl called Aloya. After the girl died, Arogo wept bitterly, his tears turning into hills as lasting proof of his grief.

petra The city that never goes away. That is Petra, an ancient town that was chiselled into the limestone slopes of Mount Hor in Jordan.

“Petra” comes from the Greek word meaning stone. It was the capital of the Nabatean kingdom and

30

Page 17: MAXX-M OCT-NOV 9 BEST THING

founded by King Aretas IV between 9 BC and 40 AD. Its unique design, literally being chiselled out of the mountain, was meant to repel enemy attacks and as a defence against the fierce sandstorms of the area. Petra is located in the lowlands and surrounded by several mountains that form the eastern wing of Wadi Araba, the large valley that runs from the Dead Sea to the Gulf of Aqaba.

Petra was an important ancient trading city for the Middle East and European routes. However, the city eventually faded until it was lost to the world for more than 500 years until, in 1812, a Swiss adventurer, Johann Burckhardt rediscovered Petra and introduced it as a tourist destination to the world. Many parts of the ancient site are crumbling, but some, like the Hellenistis Tomb Palace and a theatre that can accommodate 400 people, are intact and look much like they must have thousands of years ago.

This little garden of Eden has been virtually untouched by human hands, allowing it to retain its natural state, without the pollution and trash that mark much of the modern world. Green is the real colour of Bhutan, with much of the country thickly carpeted with forest.

The last Shangri-La, Bhutan maintains its mist of mystery by keeping itself largely closed to the outside, unseen and untouched. Bhutan was shut off to visitors until 1974, when King Jigme Singye Wangchuck, the fourth dragon king from the Wangchuck dynasty, opened it to the world. Buddhist temple in northern Thailand. It is richly ornamented and is a blinding white, thus the name White Temple. The entire complex is a visual treat, a veritable explosion of gothic details and architecture. Some of the highlights are the replica heads hanging in the trees and hideous looking sculptures along the road leading to the main building.

The road to the main temple winds past a large pond, with the temple reflected in the water. To reach the building visitors must cross a bridge that represents the cycle of rebirth with the pits of hell below, with the hands of creatures reaching up and disembodied heads of people who haven’t managed to overcome cravings and obtain entrance to the Abode of Buddha.

To call the White Temple unique is an understatement. The complex is also equipped with a wishing well and the world’s most beautiful public toilets, in a golden colour. The White Temple is located 13 kilometres south of Chiang Rai. It was designed

praguePrague has a history that stretches back more than a thousand years. The capital of the Czech Republic is a centre of European culture, a city of theatres, museums and art galleries that will transport visitors back through the centuries.

This is also a city rich in architectural styles. The historical core of the city covers 866 hectares, and is home to such stately structures as Prague Castle, Charles Bridge, the Old Town Hall, Vysehrad and St. Agnes’ Convent, and Brevnovsky Monastery. It is like a walking tour through European history.

Prague is known as the City of a Hundred Towers, although the actual number of towers is well over a hundred. Czech society in the past was known to be very religious so almost anywhere you went you would find churches with majestic towers.

splendour of Persepolis lasted only two centuries. The audience space and majestic palaces were eaten by the flames when Alexander the Great conquered Persepolis in 330 BC and looted the city. Persepolis was left in ruins for centuries until around 1931, when the first scientific excavations were carried out by Ernst Herzfeld and Erich f. Schmidt from the Oriental Institute and the University of Chicago.

Persepolis was a palace complex that included the Gate of All Nations, Apadana Palace, a throne hall and the Tomb of Kings. The Gate of All Nations is a great hall about 25 metres long. A pair of bull-headed Lamassu bearded men stand on the west side of the hall. Apadana Palace was in the west of the city and served as an official audience hall. The throne hall was used for receptions for military commanders and representatives from all the colonies of the Persian Empire.

Skye could well be a game-changer for the Jakarta restaurant and bar scene, finally introducing the city’s residents to the

concept of sophisticated, high-quality rooftop venues that have become so popular in other leading Asian capitals such as Hong Kong, Bangkok and Singapore. Since opening in June 2012 and occupying possibly the best location available in the city – atop Menara BCA, currently the tallest building in Jakarta, and Indonesia. – it has become the place to go for amazing views and hot nights.

Although Skye identifies itself as a restaurant and lounge, it would

probably be more appropriate to call it a lounge and bar. But whatever you call it, Skye is the perfect destination for any occasion, from entertaining visitors to the city or just enjoying the understated elegance and casual sophistication of its indoor and outdoor terrace lounge.

Shanghai Blue 1920 brings an old-time exotic appeal to Jakarta with one of the most unique, artistic and romantic restaurants

in the capital. Everything about Shanghai Blue screams artistic, from the red gateway to the lyrics of songs popular in the 1920 written on the walls.

Entering Shanghai Blue 1920 is like entering a time machine and suddenly arriving in a different era. The first thing you need to know about the restaurant is that it is gorgeous. from the subdued lighting and the posters of Shanghai women

and old pictures of jazz artists, to the old chairs and music instruments and the Chinese writing on some of the walls, all these details help create a venue that is as much a destination as it is a restaurant. It is also oh so romantic, a place of hushed murmurs and twinkling jazz.

Shanghai Blue 1920 was inspired by a humble little warung, or food stall, that developed an outsized reputation at Jakarta’s Sunda Kelapa harbour in the 19th century.

Influenced by the Europeans who occupied Shanghai in the 1920s, the food at Shanghai Blue 1920

celebrates the best of Eastern and Western cuisine. Orchestra of Shrimp features melt-in-your-mouth prawns rolled in crisp-fried bread covered in sesame seeds. Party of the Prawns is deep-fried prawn and apple rolls with mango compote and miso, with an orange and lemongrass dressing. One of the most popular dishes is the Siti Zaenab Steamed fish Batavia Style, which is steamed carp fillet with tofu and mushrooms, marinated for three hours with coriander sauce.

Asuka approaches traditional Japanese dishes as if they were works of modern art. The stereotype of Japanese

food being limited to a standard collection of salmon, tuna and shrimp is turned upside down at Asuka, with its varied menu of upscale, authentic creations. Premium imported beef, bluefin tuna, crisp soft-shell crab and abalone, with a variety of tempura, cold soba and buckwheat noodle dishes provide further menu diversity.

Among Asuka’s must-haves is the multi-course tasting menu known as Omakase, a Japanese term that means “I’ll leave it to you.” It is a chef’s

selection. The menu varies according to what ingredients are in season, which sets Asuka apart from most of the Japanese restaurants in Jakarta.

Asuka also distinguishes itself with its 136 different types of Japanese sauce, with 27 listed as favourites, ensuring maximum pleasure for the palates of Japanese food connoisseurs. for drinks, Asuka bar features an extensive list of proprietary sake, an impressive wine list and specialty cocktails using unique ingredients such as dragon fruit and aloe juice.

Asuka is divided according to three distinct experiences. first is the classical sushi bar. The sleek sushi

counter is made from honoki wood, which is traditionally used in Japan to complete a fine-dining experience. Then there is the dining area, with its contemporary ambience and blend of traditional Japanese elements such as traditional woods and kimono fabrics. finally are the private Tatami rooms, which create the feel of a traditional Japanese teahouse with rough plaster on the walls and folding doors.

Umbra Bar and Lounge is a quirky little spot in South Jakarta’s hip Kemang district. To start with, the bar

and lounge is reached by a winding little staircase. At the top of the stairs are two gates. The one on the left leads to the main area of Umbra Bar and Lounge, and the one on the right to an outdoor bar with a more casual ambience and views of Jalan Kemang.

I went left and plunged into the heart of Umbra, a classic bar and lounge with an interior that harkens back to the 1920s. There are large windows overlooking the street, frescoes and

ornate umbrellas. It is a comfortable space, the kind of bar where you can relax, have fun and not have to worry about being on your best behaviour.

I didn’t want to be a wallflower so I ordered a Snow White cocktail, a favourite, I was told, with female guests because of its fetching aroma and creamy flavour. As I cradled my drink and kept an eye out for any dwarves, a waitress came with the food I had ordered, the Umbra Melt with cheddar cheese and the Grilled Tuna Steak with ratatouille. It was delicious, certainly a step up from your normal bar food.

A band provided live entertainment, a mix of R & B and music mashups. I enjoyed the music and vibe for a few hours, not forgetting to try Umbra’s signature beverage, tequila combined with mango syrup and presented in a glass wrapped in brown paper. I slid out of my seat at midnight, buzzing from the Umbra experience and already planning on coming back for more.

Pasar Malem offers a chance to dine under the stars in the beautiful tropical garden at Hotel Bumi Surabaya. The

menu features the best local dishes from Surabaya and East Java. There are around 30 dishes that are served on a rotating basis so regular guests can try something new each time they visit. Majapahit Garden is a serene venue with lanterns hanging in the trees casting a romantic glow across everyone and everything, and the food here is prepared just like vendors hawking their wares on the street. There are plenty of dishes to try, such as satay, kampoeng fried noodle, soto, lontong kikil and jajanan pasar for dessert. There are also local drinks such as sekoteng, angsle and wedang ronde, just to name a few. Everything here is a real treat not only for your taste buds but also your eyes, and our advice when you want to eat at Pasar Malem is to get there early so you can take your time and enjoy the whole scene and experience.

Pad@28 looks nothing like a restaurant and bar from the outside, but that is just part of the mystery and charm of this trendy

venue. It blends in with the luxury houses that surround it near the Senopati junction, but for those in the know, good food, cool drinks and plenty of fun await inside.

What’s makes it different from the dozen other new restaurants in Jakarta? The first floor is designed as a smoking area, lounge and bar. Ascending seats, from normal dining tables to higher sofas to bar stools, create an effect of flirty fun on the first level. There

is also a small bakery area beside the entrance, a perfect spot for coffee hour or high tea. The second floor, the dining room, is the non-smoking and more family friendly area.

Pad@28’s signature drinks include the fruit Salad Punch, a medley of melon balls skewered into a fruit kebab. This refreshing thirst quencher is sure to go down easy on a hot sunny afternoon on the terrace. Another selection is the Grilled Lychee Mar-TEA-ni. It’s all in the name. Throw a few lychee over a charcoal grill to caramelize the natural sugars in the fruit and add a touch of TWG smoked Earl Grey

tea syrup for an even more complex and interesting take on this usually sickly sweet girl’s drink. And yes, it defies any man to try one of these and still say it’s just a girl’s drink!

“Pad” is American vernacular for a place of residence, befitting Pad@28’s homey concept. Diners looking for quality and value might look to the Pad for food, cocktails and coffee in the comfort of their own SCBD home.

When the workday is done in Jakarta, there are two choices: sit in traffic for

hours as you inch your way home or find a refuge where you can pass the time with some good food and drinks and a little entertainment. That is exactly what some colleagues and I did recently, heading for the Kemang district and Lio Gallery.

Despite the name, Lio is not an art gallery, though it has a very artistic

feel in its design and decoration. It is a bistro, bar and lounge, all in one stylish two-level venue dominated by rustic woods, a hip selection of artworks and a lively ambience.

Lio Gallery, Bistro, Bar and Lounge has a seating capacity of 65 indoors and 25 outdoors. It is stylishly decorated with contemporary sandy brown and plum-coloured walls, cosy couches and an undeniably modern and minimalist approach to

area is a favourite for events like barbeque parties and weddings.

Lio Gallery serves Western and Asian cuisines. I started with the Mesclun Maison salad, with crispy apple, blue cheese, walnuts and a honey mustard dressing. My friends ordered the Le Thon, a Nicoise salad with poached tuna and poached egg, and the Caesar salad, a delicious combination of Romaine lettuce and grana padano cheese. for the mains, we had the Tom Yam Soup, a perfect mixture of seafood in a spicy Thai broth, and the spaghetti with Arrabiata sauce.

There is also a breakfast menu with choices like Eggs Benedict, an English muffin topped with beef bacon, two poached eggs, sautéed spinach and hollandaise sauce,

architecture. A whole new experience of intimate fine dining awaits at Lio Gallery, day or night.

There are plenty of options for chilling at Lio Gallery, from private and semi-private rooms to the swimming pool on the roof of the Bar and Lounge. Our group of four headed for the swimming pool, where we were able to chat and dine outdoors under the stars. According to the waiter, the pool

quiche, pancakes and french toast. The Bar and Lounge has a full menu of premium wines, classic cocktails and the Lio Gallery signature Black Pineapple Margarita.

We had the fresh Squish Orange and fresh papaya juice. While sipping our drinks and laughing at everyone stuck in traffic, we were entertained by live music, which is offered every Wednesday and friday. The fresh flavours, cool sounds and artistic venue will always remind me of a place where my friends and I spent a fun evening hanging out and avoiding the Jakarta traffic.

Sekar Kedhaton is more than a restaurant. It is a historical destination, a repository of Javanese culture and an eyewitness

to the history of Yogyakarta. It was founded in 1800 by Mr. Prawiro Soewarno or Mr. Tembong, a gold craft businessman. During the war for independence, the restaurant served as a headquarters for the Indonesian freedom fighters.

Entering the restaurant, I am oerwhelmed by the royal Javanese atmosphere. In its early years, the restaurant was only open to aristocratic guests. The buidling

itself mixes elements of Javanese, Chinese, Portuguese and Dutch architectural styles.

Sekar Kedhaton continues to practice the old Dutch service known as rijsttafel, where as many as 40 dishes are served to the table in small portions. It is a dining experience that harkens back to colonial times and the luxuries enjoyed by the wealthy. I have the opportunity to taste dishes like grilled shrimp, beef satay, buntil daun pepaya and grilled chicken. Sekar Kedhaton also offers a la carte Asian and Western dishes.

A lounge on the second floor features a selection of beverage options. In addition, the Sekar Kedhaton complex offers a variety of facilities, from a ballroom and a boutique luxury residence with three rooms to a silver and souvenirs boutique. Sekar Kedhaton recently opened a new restaurant in the tourist area of Borobudur Temple.

If you’ve ever thought, “Why are fancy restaurants so damn expensive?” this should answer your questions.

STAFFHighly trained people who can finesse these ingredients, do quality control, and make plates look like this. A fine dining restaurant also has quite a few more staff members than a regular restaurant: sous chefs, dishwashers, additional waiters, sommeliers, etc.

INTErIOrHigh-quality menus, linen service, decor, a more expensive build out designed by an interior designer or an architect. All of these items eventually get built into the cost of the food.

INGrEDIENTS & PrEPArATION TIMEHighest quality, items that might not be in season, the number of them per plate, the variety of them they must keep on hand, and the amount they use per recipe, these are reason why some of the restaurant put a sky-high price on their menu. Some dishes might have prep that begins two days before you dine there, and if most dishes have multiple components, they are far more complex than anything we order at regular restaurants.

After a comprehensive renovation, Mandarin Oriental Jakarta reopened in October 2009 as the most

luxurious and contemporary hotel in the city. The all-new hotel comprises 272 spacious guest rooms, including 24 suites. All rooms were designed in a classic and contemporary style by the renowned design firm Lim Teo + Wilkes, which combined modern cool with traditional Asian and Indonesian aspects.

One thing that hasn’t changed is the variety of innovative dining concepts offered by Mandarin Oriental Jakarta. four new restaurants feature a range of international cuisine from quintessential regional Chinese to authentic french brasserie-style dining. There is also the signature Mandarin Oriental Cake Shop and the chic MO Bar overlooking Jakarta’s main thoroughfare.

Bold Indochine-inspired prints impart poetic grandeur to the Chinoiserie-

themed rooms. The warm palette provides a backdrop for modern Chinese artworks in the living area as well as bedside tables that feature handles inspired by Indonesian tribal jewellery. In a subtle contrast, the other theme reflects a refined yet modern colonial style. The use of natural-coloured textured wallpaper and classic details in the fixed dark-wood furnishings provides a simple yet elegant setting. Generously sized, all the rooms offer guests a comfortable lounge area, large working table, ample closet space and luxurious bathrooms that come with generous vanities. Amenities have been specially designed to enhance guests’ comfort, with all guest rooms equipped with high-quality plush linen and comforters, goose-down pillows and 480-thread-count linen.

The suites at Mandarin Oriental Jakarta display special touches and an unwavering attention to detail. The Chinoiserie-themed suites have been designed using a soft colour

palette with a liberal use of earthy tones and embellished with Oriental accents in gold and plum. All rooms are furnished with a mix of modern and classic European pieces with signature clean lines.

Upon entering Cinnamon restaurant, diners are greeted by a dessert counter displaying a delectable array of cakes, pastries and breads. Cinnamon is a lively and contemporary restaurant that takes guests on a journey through the Orient. Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, the restaurant focuses on authentic Asian food, using the freshest produce. To add some regional taste, Xin Hwa revives its reputation as the best Chinese restaurant in Jakarta. Specializing in quintessential Cantonese cuisine, Xin Hwa is a favourite with local and international guests.

Its MO Bar is the only bar in the city where guests can enjoy the Rambutini, a special cocktail made with rambutan, an exotic fruit indigenous to Indonesia. The Glass Room is a private dining area uniquely located between two glass-walled wine cellars and complemented by a large floor-to-ceiling glass window overlooking the lobby area.

For someone in my profession, it can be a breath of fresh air to take a break from the usual vacation spots. Just to be able to soak in the atmosphere and realise how beautiful life is. And at hyatt regency yogyaKarta, we found a little slice of heaven.

A little sliceof Heaven

Page 44: MAXX-M OCT-NOV 9 BEST THING

One of the Indonesian cities I love spending holidays in is Yogyakarta. Often called the City of Art

and Culture – an apt name – the city is home to a stunning wealth of cultural and artistic treasures. There are many things that make me love Yogyakarta – the ambience, the food, the shopping and also the genuinely nice people.

Yogyakarta is a great place to escape the hustle and bustle of the metropolis, just soak in the beauty and do nothing. Or you can explore the city. There are magnificent temples, the ruins of

palaces and monasteries, cultural events, art galleries, traditional performing arts and so much more. This is all part of the living culture of Yogyakarta and colours the daily lives of its residents. Because of its cultural richness and rich heritage, Yogyakarta has long been known as the cradle of Javanese culture.

As for me, I just love the best of both worlds. I love to explore the city with heritage tours, do a little bit of shopping and of course eating. And on other days, I treasure the time to just relax and enjoy the art of doing nothing. Whenever I am on a rare holiday, I simply want the best for myself, and there’s no

place better than Hyatt Regency Yogyakarta. Located in the lush outskirts of Yogyakarta, the hotel is nestled amidst beautifully landscaped tropical gardens and a nine-hole golf course. Built around an exotic theme, Misty Tropical Ruins, which calls to mind images of the ruins of some forgotten city, shrouded in the mist of an impenetrable tropical jungle, the hotel calls out to lovers with its air of mystery and grandeur. Adding to the exoticism, the hotel incorporates the same axis as many of the architectural details of the nearby ancient Borobudur Temple. Hyatt Regency is located near the outer ring of Yogyakarta, to the north near Mount Merapi. In fact,

on a clear day you can see the mountain and Borobudur Temple from the hotel. It is decidedly away from the city’s centre, which is exactly what I was looking forward to: a relaxing retreat.

The resort is a 15-minute drive from the airport, cutting through the scenic countryside and offering breathtaking panoramas and an idyllic glimpse of the Yogyakarta lifestyle. After a short check-in process, we were escorted to our suite, which is contemporarily decorated and furnished with the latest conveniences, and graciously overlooks the brilliant emerald greens of the golf course. Since

we were staying in the Regency Club, Hyatt’s unique “hotel within a hotel,” we decided to make use of our club privileges. The club is located on the second floor of the hotel, and as part of our privileges, we received a complimentary daily Continental Breakfast Buffet, all-day tea and coffee, fruit, freshly baked cookies, roasted crispy nuts and evening cocktails.

feeling the effects of my hectic schedule and busy metropolitan lifestyle that I was so eager to escape, I simply could not put off a spa visit. I headed to the spa to indulge myself with a chocolate treatment; all two-and-a-half blissful

hours of it. The treatment started with a much-needed aromatherapy massage. It was utterly relaxing as each stroke brought me to an absolutely tranquil state of mind. It was followed by a chocolate powder body scrub to remove dead skin cells, leaving my skin feeling smooth and silky. That was followed by a body wrap and then an aromatic foam body bath as I felt the soreness and weariness just slip away. The treatment concluded with a chocolate body lotion that was applied all over my body. By then, I was completely relaxed, and in seventh heaven; and the best thing is that I smelt wonderful, as sweet as chocolate.

Page 45: MAXX-M OCT-NOV 9 BEST THING

After dinner, we retreated to our room, where we were surprised by the romantic turndown service. The bathroom was littered with rose petals and a flower bath had been drawn for us. And on top of the bed was a leaf with the words “sweet dreams” written on it. Indeed, it was like a dream, a very sweet dream.

We woke up early the next morning to explore Yogyakarta. Up first was watching the sunrise at Borobudur Temple, a magnificent sight that is worth tearing yourself away from the Hyatt’s gloriously comfortable beds. It was still dark when we arrived at Borobudur and begin the steep climb to the top of the temple. Breathless, we waited for the sun to begin its journey, breaking free of the horizon to climb across the morning sky in a breathtaking display of golds and yellows.

We also visited Mount Merapi and then explored the famous Malioboro Street, being greeted with friendly smiles wherever we went. Yogyakarta has long been known as the cradle of Javanese culture, and Hyatt Regency Yogyakarta offers plenty of interesting activities to suit everyone, from Kaliurang ala Madam and the Meneer Tour to Wish Upon a Tree

at Alun-Alun Kidul, where you must walk through a grove of sacred trees with your eyes closed while wishing your dreams will come true. It is believed that if you can walk through the trees without running into them, your wishes will be granted.

One thing is certain; you will never go hungry in Yogyakarta. There are so many traditional foods to try and savour, from the internationally famous gudeg to the sweet treat of bakpia. On this trip, we went to Jejamuran restaurant, a vegetarian establishment where all the dishes are based on different types of jamur (mushrooms). I could not believe everything was made from mushrooms; it was so delicious and tasted like real meat. It is definitely something that you have to try when you are in Yogyakarta. We also visited the House of Raminten, a unique restaurant that captures the laid-back attitude and culinary traditions of Yogyakarta. We also tried some of the favourite dishes of the royal family at Bale Raos. Located near the Kraton, the Sultan’s Palace, the restaurant offers a selection of traditional dishes, complete with notes about which member of the royal family likes which dishes. And, of course, the Hyatt Regency Yogyakarta itself

is host to a never-ending range of culinary delights for even the most discerning gourmands.

Time certainly flies when you are having fun. We had a great holiday in Yogyakarta. We love the city, and the Hyatt Regency Yogyakarta is the best place to stay and explore everything Yogyakarta has to offer. As we prepared to say goodbye to the Hyatt Regency Yogyakarta, I realized that it is only when you take a break and step back from the daily routine that you start to understand what the Italians mean by la vita e bella, or “life is beautiful.” Our time at the resort gave us the chance to do nothing but enjoy ourselves. We spent peaceful hours just soaking it all in, and in those times, one is able to realize how beautiful and precious life is. We often take many things in this life for granted, and we spend too much time working and forget to stop and smell the roses. Thankfully, we found a little slice of heaven at Hyatt Regency Yogyakarta.

Making Business a P leasure

Page 47: MAXX-M OCT-NOV 9 BEST THING

There are two things that I love most about Hotel Bumi Surabaya – the lush gardens and the food. When it comes to

luxury, only a few hotels understand that it extends beyond the front door to the surrounding grounds. At Hotel Bumi Surabaya, lush gardens with shade trees, vibrant flowers and gurgling water features create a welcoming oasis where guests can escape and commune with nature. Now that’s luxury.

eden on earthThe first thing that struck me when I got my first look at Hotel Bumi Surabaya were the beautiful manicured gardens, which are a real treat to the eyes. It is not often that you are welcomed to a business hotel with such immaculate gardens. I knew right then that I was about to experience something different.

at Cascade guests can savour the delicious pasta and pizza from the wood-fired oven in a semi-outdoor setting. It is also the place to indulge in the very popular Hot Stone Steak, a unique dining concept that involves cooking fresh meat on serpentine slabs of volcanic stone, sealing in the natural juices for an explosion of flavour. The Lobby Lounge serves my favourite sweets in Surabaya, the Hotel Bumi Surabaya’s famous serabi, a kind of Indonesian pancake that is so delicious that I cannot describe it in words.

The building itself seems to float on a sea of greenery in the heart of Surabaya, Indonesia’s second-biggest city. The gardens offer an explosion of intense greens and a rainbow of tropical colours, casting a spell on visitors who will find themselves lost in the intense beauty. The gardens were designed by the famous Made Wijaya, who succeeded in creating an oasis where guests feel like they have discovered a private Eden.

As I entered the lobby I was struck by the number of artefacts dotted around, and I later found more in my room. Again, this was not the feel of some cold business hotel, but felt more like a resort. from the spacious and warm lobby you can see the lush Majapahit Garden with its lotus-filled ponds. There is another garden on the third floor, the Tamansari Garden. With so many different kinds of plants and flowers wonderfully arranged, the

And there is one other thing that is my absolute favourite, the chocolate specially made by Hotel Bumi Surabaya’s executive chef, Mahesa Nugraha. Usually when I stay in a hotel, I very seldom ask for anything special. But every time I stay at Hotel Bumi Surabaya, I make sure that Chef Mahesa will be so kind as to make me the chocolate. Thanks, chef.

I have a funny story about Hotel Bumi Surabaya’s chocolate. During one stay at the hotel, some friends dropped by and I shared the chocolate with them. Then, during

hotel has created a magical space that is admired the world over. The beautiful gardens stretch as far as the eye can see. Hotel Bumi Surabaya went all out to create these immaculate gardens, with the stones and sculptures being flown in from neighbouring regions such as Bali and Yogyakarta. All that wonderful green is a true treat for the eyes and it was difficult to believe that we were actually in the middle of a city.

gaStronomic deLightSThe other thing that I love about the hotel is its food. Trust me, you will never go hungry at Hotel Bumi Surabaya. The hotel’s stable of fine restaurants is one of its biggest draws, and it attracts crowds on the weekend from family get-togethers to business luncheons to lavish dates.

Japanese food lovers will not want to miss Kizahashi Restaurant, while

subsequent visits to Surabaya, I began to wonder why my friends were so eager to drop by and spend time in my room, where before they would just pick me up in the lobby. Until one day when I was in Surabaya and staying in another hotel, and my friends said they would meet me in the lobby. I asked them if they wanted to come up to my room and they said no, you don’t have the chocolate. That figures.

One of the many things that Surabaya is famous for is the food. I always wanted to take a culinary journey of the city but just never got

the chance, until I discovered Hotel Bumi Surabaya’s Siti Inggil, where you can sample all the local dishes in one location.

Siti Inggil offers a chance to dine under the stars in Majapahit Garden. Its menu features the best of local cuisine from Surabaya and East Java. There are around 30 dishes that are served on a rotating basis, so regular guests can try something new each time they visit. Majapahit Garden in the evening is a serene venue with lanterns hanging in the trees, casting a romantic glow across everyone and everything. The food is prepared just like vendors hawking their wares on the street. There are plenty of dishes to try, such as satay, kampoeng fried noodles, soto, lontong kikil and jajanan pasar for dessert. There are also favourite local drinks such as sekoteng, angsle and wedang ronde, just to name a few. Everything here is a real treat not only for your taste buds but also your eyes. My advice when you want to eat at Pasar Malem is to get there early so you can take your time and enjoy the scene.

Leave the weight watching and the niggling guilt at home. When confronted with a galaxy of gastronomic options such as those available at Hotel Bumi Surabaya, the stars dictate that you should eat with wanton abandon.

Hotel Bumi Surabaya offers the best of both worlds, whether you are in town for business or pleasure. It has the comforts and luxurious touches of a resort, and all the facilities of a business hotel. Who said business can’t be a pleasure?

What I like most about The Spa at four Seasons Hotel Jakarta is the calming and

relaxing sensation you instantly feel the moment you enter. It is literally a sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle of the big city.

Stepping into The Spa, you are welcomed by an atmosphere of elegant tranquillity. The fragrant aroma of lavender gently provides a soothing sensation for the mind.

I start with the Simply Slim treatment. This “get in shape” treatment ritual speeds up the body’s metabolism and

stimulates and encourages slimming benefits. It starts with an invigorating body brushing scrub and then a slimming massage. Once the body has been purified, the cutting-edge green coffee wrap will be performed to truly stimulate your body’s ability to break down fat, increase metabolism and eliminate water retention to assist the process of slimming and toning your body, smoothing and enhancing skin texture, and visibly reducing spongy, dimply cellulite.

Then it is time to enjoy a facial. I have the PURE Remedy facial. It begins with a double cleansing to make sure the skin is clean, and then the therapist starts to exfoliate

to remove the dead skin. The next step is the steam to get the blood circulation going, and then comes the best part – the massage followed by serum. The final touch is a mask to draw out any impurities. While waiting for the mask, the therapist gives me a hand massage.

One afternoon at the office I was furiously googling away when I ran across a quote from Dr. Joyce Brothers, the

world-renowned psychologist and television personality. She said, “No matter how much pressure you feel at work, if you could find ways to relax for at least five minutes every hour, you’d be more productive.” I pondered that for a moment and then was out the door and headed for the spa, because there is no better way to relax, and I wanted to be as productive as possible.

There is a full range of massages and health treatments such as aromatic and traditional body scrubs, body massages combining some of Asia’s most renowned techniques, including acupressure, Shiatsu and Thai massage, natural facials and stress-relieving reflexology, helping to make Spa InterContinental one of the best spas in Jakarta.

I decided to pamper myself with Spa InterContinental’s Signature Experience. The journey begins with a 60-minute signature massage, a blend of Javanese,

Shiatsu and Thai massage techniques combined with a mood-enhancing blend of essential oils to relax weary muscles. That is followed by a deep facial massage, and the final touch is a heavenly body wrap of red clay.

After my 90 minutes of uninterrupted pampering at Spa InterContinental Jakarta MidPlaza Hotel, my mind was clear, my body rejuvenated and my skin glowing, and I was ready to head back to work.

Nestled at the foot of Mount Merapi, an active volcano in Yogyakarta, is Cangkringan Jogja

Villas & Spa. This sanctuary of Javanese and modern architecture is a perfect destination to rejuvenate the body, mind and soul with a range of signature spa treatments perfected generations ago in the royal courts of the island.

One of the spa’s signature treatments is the Asmara Nirapada, which starts with a herbal bath to wash away the fatigue, stimulate blood circulation and leave you smelling

pine fresh. The pampering continues with a steam shower, followed by the Asmana Raga massage. This traditional Javanese massage works at a much deeper level, helping to stimulate the flow of energy along the body’s meridian lines with deep compression. Hot towels help complete the treatment, which is followed by stretching, acupressure and effleurage.

Asmara Nirapada comes to a delightfully relaxing close with an aromatic facial customized to your skin type. The facial combines natural products and massage to regenerate and revitalize the skin. As the deft

hands of the therapist cleanse and tone your skin, you can almost feel all the dead skin cells and impurities being removed and your pores tightening, leaving your face fresh and glowing. A face massage follows, draining toxins, relaxing muscles and stimulating blood and oxygen flow, followed by a purifying, balancing and revitalizing mask.

How do you know a spa is the best? Easy, it’s the spa that immediately comes

to mind when someone asks you where to go for some world-class relaxation. That’s why for me Susan Spa & Resort is the best in Semarang, because it is the first place I think of when someone asks me about pampering in the Central Java city.

After a particularly hectic time at work, I decided to take a break and make the 50-minute flight from Jakarta to Semarang, my hometown. I was planning to see family and friends, but mostly I wanted to relax.

I headed for the Bandungan district in Semarang, which boasts beautiful mountain views, cool, fresh air and, most important, Susan Spa & Resort, regarded as one of Java’s leading spa destinations. What I like most about Susan Spa & Resort is that it challenges my senses with magnificent views from its perch 1,100 metres above sea level in the hills around Mount Ungaran. It is my secret gateway to irresistibly indulgent health and beauty treatments. It is a refuge for the body and soul.

Susan Spa & Resort offers an absolutely rejuvenating spa experience. It boasts the perfect combination of exquisite treatments, professional service, marvellous setting and high-quality, natural-based products, all blended together to provide an exceptional experience that captures the healing and nourishing essence of nature. Susan Spa offers a full

menu of spa treatments, including body massages and treatments, detox and face treatments, body firming and shaping, even treatments for children. There are also couple’s packages, including a traditional Javanese massage, hot and cold stone massage, body polishes, facial treatments and many more. Spa products range from aromatherapy massage oils to various special body treatments, such as the Sensual Sindoro, Enlightened Merbabu, Uplifting Sumbing and Invigorating Ungaran.

Being a traditional kind of girl, I picked something from the traditional massage menu, which includes Traditional Javanese Massage, Aromatherapy Massage, Tui Na Massage, Authentic Thai Massage, Gold Massage Candle Massage, Hot & Cold Stone Massage, Herbal Bolus Massage, Reflexology foot Massage, Pregnancy Massage and Hydrotherapy Massage. Susan Spa also offers a whole range of body treatments. If you want a body scrub there is the Susan Beautilicious and the Tropical Nut Scrub, or you can savour a body moisturizing treatment like the Javanese Lulur, Balinese Boreh, Exotic Corn Avocado and The Beautilicious of Cleopatra. for detox treatments, Susan Spa has Green Tea Detoxifying, Herbal Ratus Body V–Spa and Ear Candle Therapy, and its selection of body whitening treatments includes the Bengkoang Body Polish, Strawberry Sparkling, Glorious Grape, Dazzling Soya Bean, Vitamin C Glamour, Chocolate

Delight, Romantic Chocolate Coffee and Relaxing Coconut.

I chose the Traditional Javanese Massage, intrigued by the fact that it is rooted in ancient Javanese traditions passed down from generation to generation. It is a massage for restoring tired and stiff muscles as the therapist uses gentle pressure and movements, combined with a choice of aromatherapy oils, to send you into a dream-like state of bliss. It also removes dead skin cells, so your skin feels soft, smooth and bright.

Susan Spa also offers treatments for children, including massages for babies and kids. After your treatment you can enjoy a leisurely meal at the elegantly furnished Pandan Restaurant, which serves selections from Indonesian, European and Chinese cuisines, along with fresh, healthy beverages. Susan Spa & Resort also offers Eden Park, with two gazebos to enjoy the magnificent mountain views, a semi-outdoor swimming pool, lush tropical gardens and all the fresh air you could want!

After an unforgettable experience at Susan Spa & Resort, I was ready to return to Jakarta, but I know that I will be back.

When it comes to tourism, Mexico and Indonesia have plenty they can learn from each other. Antonius Martono recently had the chance to sit down with mexico’S amBaSSador to Indonesia, meLBa pria, and talk tourism and the ties that bind the two countries.

Mexican Delight

Page 70: MAXX-M OCT-NOV 9 BEST THING

What are the similarities between Indonesia and Mexico in terms of tourism potential?for me it is a very interesting theme, Mexico working together with Indonesia in tourism, because both countries have enormous potential. In the case of Mexico, we have divided tourism into different niches, based on culture, historical interest, meetings and conventions, etc., depending on your needs.

Is there any possibility of Indonesia and Mexico working together to lift the number of tourists to each country? We are working on several agreements that may facilitate and elevate the numbers of travellers to both of our countries. for example, we have cooperated on an aviation agreement to allow Mexican flights to come to Indonesia and vice versa, specifically an air agreement between Garuda and Aero Mexico, also a visa agreement. There are also agreements on the promotion of each country’s tourism potential and cooperation with local travel agents to encourage them to promote and bring more travellers in from both countries. So all this supports the tourism industries of both countries.

How important is Indonesia for Mexico in terms of the tourism industry?I would say double as Mexico is for Indonesia. I always joke with the minister of tourism that we have Mexicans made in Indonesia. Indonesia is one of the tourist destinations for honeymoons and we

have about 2,000 Mexicans coming to Indonesia. We hope that more Indonesians will come to Mexico, because our country is also known as a honeymoon destination for many countries.

Is it safe to travel to Mexico for people who prefer independent travel?Very. Mexico is one of the top 10 travel destinations in the world and we have a very good relationship with travel agencies, but we believe that people have the right to not use a travel agency and travel independently, like by bus or available public transportation, and the infrastructure is very supportive depending on what kind of budget they have.

Currently, which parts of Mexico are the top tourist destinations?Baja California, Cabos, you have Puerto Vallarta as a honeymoon destination, Oaxaca as a historical destination. There is also Cancun and Riviera Maya, a mixture between sea and beach and very close with Mayan heritage sites. Here you will find various accommodations, from backpacker hotels to luxury suites, it all depends on what you need.

When is the best time of year to explore Mexico? It depends on what you like. The most extreme weather we have is at the end of spring, because it is the hottest month of the year. Then you have the summer, we have the rainy season, which is comfortable, plenty of fresh weather in the morning.

“People love to go out dur ing the winter and the autumn because the weather is also comfortable. But the good thing about the weather in Mexico is that you always have warm mornings . ”

People love to go out during the winter and the autumn because the weather is also comfortable. But the good thing about the weather in Mexico is that you always have warm mornings.

What are the best places to shop in Mexico for our readers? What Mexican food should every visitor try at least once?Mexico is regarded as one of the five most important cuisines in the world. It is not only rich in taste but also variety in the food itself. When you go to coastal areas you will find different foods from what you have in mountain areas. So you will never finish trying Mexican cuisine. In Mexico, we also have international shopping, with all the major brands opening boutiques on certain streets (like what you find in Europe or New York), like Polanco or Interlomas in Mexico City. Then there is Mexican fashion couture or silver crafts created by locals.

Are there any specific areas that the government in Mexico is highlighting? Let me tell you about our system. We have fonatur, the fomento al Turismo, an office to promote tourism, transforming certain areas into travel destinations. Cancun, Cabos and Ixtapa are examples of cities that have become travel destinations. Previously these areas had nothing but fonatur prepared accommodations and all the facilities to support tourism.

How did you get your start playing the violin? How did it all begin for you?I was born into an artistic family, music was in my blood right from the start. My mum used to practise the Chopin piano concertos when she was pregnant with me. I first asked for a violin when I was 3, and started getting instruction when I was 4.

When did you decide to really dedicate yourself to music? At age 11 I surprised my violin teacher by having learned “Meditation” by Massenet autodidactically and she then suggested that I audition for the College of Music in Berlin. I did so and got in.

you have performed in several charity concerts. How did you get involved with Westin resort Nusa Dua and Unicef? The responsible people approached me after having watched a TV performance of mine. They found me suitable for such an event. I feel honoured to be able to share my art to make the world a tiny bit better.

When you were asked to perform at Westin resort Nusa Dua in connection with the Unicef Check Out for Children Charity event last August, what were your thoughts on music and your ability to help spread the mission of Unicef?Music is a need. It is a necessity. It makes us define our humanity. In fact, it makes us human. And it appeals to a certain space in our minds, which can make us remember

the good within ourselves. I think Unicef shares the same goals.

Westin resort Nusa Dua is considered one of the best resorts in the area in terms of helping to preserve and promote local tradition and heritage. I was told that you also worked with some of Bali’s promising violin students and incorporated them in your performance. What is the importance of supporting international establishments like Westin resort Nusa Dua in helping local talent?I appreciate any kind of development work and supporting young talent. Maybe this comes from my dad, who is very active in Indonesian development work and political journalism. To give young people such an environment can help them feel they are taken seriously. This is crucial in developing a healthy self-esteem and belief.

A lot of listeners take in classical music through CDs or the radio, and that can be both an emotional and intellectual experience, but seeing you reminded me of how much physical movement and energy and muscle memory comes into the performance of the pieces. Can you speak to that a little bit, outside of the intellectual and emotional challenges of classical music, of the real physical challenges that exist? When I play, I use my whole body. I was criticized for that in my teens, when my movements were probably a bit uncontrolled. But I have managed to refine my movements, so

they flow naturally with my music. I don’t believe that the violin is the instrument, but my body is. And I need big movements for a big sound. As much as I am a spiritual person, I am also a very physical person. I need to feel that my bow is stroking the strings intensely and I love to produce juicy, earthy sounds.

Is there a particular song or piece that you go back to and play, just sort of for your own personal enjoyment? Not really, because I like to dive into a new repertoire all the time. Composer-wise, though, I always go back to Bach.

What are three things people may not know about Iskandar Widjaja? That’s naughty. Well, I can’t drink much alcohol, probably due to Asian genetics. I photograph my abs to see if my six-pack is getting more defined. And I listen to “Crush” by David Archuleta on repeat.

If you weren’t a musician, what would you be and why?Hmm, when I was 6, I told people I wanted to be a violinist, painter, poet. Quite an artistic tendency. Now I couldn’t think of a life without music. I can only imagine switching instruments or genre. Pop singer, cellist, pianist?

Tell us your five favourite travel destinations.Bali, Bodrum in Turkey, Dubrovnik in Croatia, Paris and Norway.

Berlin-born violinist iSKandar WidJaJa brings rock star looks and attitude to the world of classical music. The 26-year-old, who has helped introduce legions of new fans to Bach and Beethoven, tells us why classical music is in his blood, his favourite things about Bali and his six-pack abs.

THE TOOLS: TrANSFOrM yOUr PrOBLEMS INTO COUrAGE, CONFIDENCE, AND CrEATIvITyBy Phil Stutz and Barry Michels

This is a groundbreaking book about personal growth that presents a uniquely effective set of five tools that bring about dynamic change. The Tools offers a solution to the biggest complaint patients have about therapy: the interminable wait for change to begin. The traditional therapeutic model sets its sights on the past, but Phil Stutz and Barry Michels employ an arsenal of techniques – “the tools” – that allow patients to use their problems as levers that access the power of the unconscious and propel them into action. Suddenly, through this transformative approach, obstacles become opportunities – to find courage, embrace discipline, develop self-expression, deepen creativity.

for years, Stutz and Michels taught these techniques to an exclusive patient base, but with The Tools, their revolutionary, empowering practice becomes available to every reader interested in realizing the full range of their potential. The authors’ goal is nothing less than for your life to become exceptional – exceptional in its resiliency, in its experience of real happiness and in its understanding of the human spirit.

THINKING, FASTAND SLOW By Daniel Kahneman

This book was selected by The New York Times Book Review as one of the best books of 2011, was a Globe and Mail Best Book of 2011, was one of The Economist’s 2011 Books of the Year, one of The Wall Street Journal’s Best Nonfiction Books of the 2011 and was the winner of the 2011 Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Current Interest.

In the highly anticipated Thinking, Fast and Slow, Daniel Kahneman takes us on a groundbreaking tour of the mind and explains the two systems that drive the way we think. System 1 is fast, intuitive and emotional; System 2 is slower, more deliberative and more logical. Kahneman exposes the extraordinary capabilities – and also the faults and biases – of fast thinking, and reveals the pervasive influence of intuitive impressions on our thoughts and behaviour. The impact of loss aversion and overconfidence on corporate strategies, the difficulties of predicting what will make us happy in the future, the challenges of properly framing risks at work and at home, the profound effect of cognitive biases on everything from playing the stock market to planning the next vacation – each of these can be understood only by knowing how the two systems work together to shape our judgments and decisions.

Engaging the reader in a lively conversation about how we think, Kahneman reveals where we can and cannot trust our intuitions and how we can tap into the benefits of slow thinking. He offers practical and enlightening insights into how choices are made in both our business and our personal lives – and how we can use different techniques to guard against the mental glitches that often get us into trouble. Thinking, Fast and Slow will transform the way you think about thinking.
