p14/ex1Suggested answers:1 Many people think that new babies know their mother’s face straight away.2 But in reality newborn babies identify their mother mainly by recognising their voice.3 According to specialists, it hasn’t been proven whether children under the age of three weeks can recognise anything by sight or not.4 A newborn baby cannot see clearly, but its eyesight gradually improves until it becomes ideal at the age of two.

She is wearing a beige dress and sunglasses and holding a sun umbrella. She’s sitting on a white suitcase. I think she’s posing for a photo. I guess she feels concentrated on her work, trying to do her best.

p28/ex21 We had a beautiful house in Hills Road. We’d lived there for ten years and I’d enjoyed every minute of it.2 The estate agent came round to value our house. He went through all the rooms and even walked round the garden.3 My mother told my younger brother to tidy his room before dinner. He didn’t like that and got really cross.

4 On Saturday, we had a birthday party for my grandad, who turned eighty. It was a great success and he loved every minute of it.
p28/ex3 A The bus was packed so I had to stand up all the way. I got home from school about half past four. I made a sandwich and then did some homework.B I wondered why Rachel hadn’t emailed me about going to the concert. I discovered that something was wrong with my computer and I couldn’t send or receive email. I phoned my friend who knows a lot about computers.

p70/ex31 After mowing the lawn, I have to dig the garden and plant some flowers.2 My job involves printing out letters as well as sending them.3 The employees not only get two days a week off but also six-week paid leave.4 Although it’s a difficult job, I really enjoy doing it.
p70/ex4I did some babysitting last week for my sister’s children. AlthoughI love young kids, these ones were a nightmare. They refused to eat anything I gave them for their tea as well as to go to bed. While I was washing up, they drew all over my homework notes. Before I’babysit for them again next week, I ’ll buy lots of sweets to keep them quiet.

p71/ex2A – not good because it’s too factual and sequential and doesn’t arouse the reader’s interest. It also doesn’t focus on the topic but on what happened to the author’s brother.B – very good because it starts with a fact, raises some questions, and finishes with a statement that makes us want to read on. It also focuses on the main topic, while the brother’s story is just an illustration of the dilemma.C – not good because the first question is simply repeating the task. The writer’s opinion is given too early. There are too many questions and they are too colloquial. One rhetorical question might be OK, but not a whole series. Since the reader already knows the author’s opinion as well as the ending to his brother’s story, he isn’t interested in reading on.

p114/ex31 For a number of reasons.2 (…) shopping centres usually offer different attractions at the same time, under one roof, so there are shops but also cafés, sports facilities and free wi-fi.
3 (…) teenagers go to shopping centres because they’re bored and have nowhere else to spend their free time (…)
p114/ex41 The shopping centre put up the signs saying something like ‘Teenagers not welcome’, which was caused by gangs of teenage boys who would come to the centre to fight with one another. F2 Most shopping malls even try to attract them, which comes from the fact that teens have more and more pocket money to spend, they also have their own credit cards and are easy to influence! T

p123/ex2Suggested answers:1 The documentary covered many aspects of advertising aimed at children.2 The programme included interviews with both parents and children. 3 The film made me aware that advertising affects us in many ways.4 There is no clear-cut solution to the problems caused by advertising industry.5 My opinion is based on what I’ve read about marketing techniques.6 I know only too well from first-hand experience that advertising makes us want more and more things.
p123/ex3Supermarkets often encourage us to buy higher priced brands. For example, the cheaper brands are on the bottom shelves, where we can’t see them. They also target children at the checkout by putting items such as chocolate bars, crisps and fizzy drinks that children will pester their parents to buy near the queue. Another tactic is for supermarkets to use different smells to tempt us to buy products. One example of this is when they fill the air near the bread section with the smell of freshly baked bread. And perhaps the biggest trick of all is to try to make us walk past as many items as possible when looking for what we want. For instance, they change the position of popular items regularly so we have to search more.

p154/ex2 It was The Phantom of the Opera. It was my parents’ wedding anniversary. They love musiacals so I had bought tickets for the whole family. The musical was at the Queen’s Theatre, which is a lovely, old building. It was completely full and the audience made the atmosphere really exciting.Everyone had said it was fantastic and we weren’t disappointed. When you come to visit us in the summer, why don’t w go to see a musical together? Les Miserables will be on in July.

p155/ex1These days at school students spend quite a lot of time studying literature, including the works of classical writers. Some people say this is a good thing, whereas others believe we should only study the works of more modern writers. Would taking classical writers off the school curriculum be a good idea?
On the one hand, reading literature that was written a long time ago can seem irrelevant to students today. The language is a bit old-fashioned and the problems dealt with might also seem unimportant. Unfortunately, it can be quite boring for students who have to struggle through these works at school. The danger is that this might put students off reading and studying literature completely. However, if we keep classical writers on the curriculum, students can learn a lot of things about the way people lived in those times and also about how they used to think. Usually, the themes and stories of classical literature are important for readers anywhere and anytime, and modern film and television programmes bear this out, showing that stories from long ago can be made interesting for today’s generation. In conclusion, I would like to say that I believe there is still an important place for classical literature in our schools. In spite of the irrelevancy of some of the issues described in the books and the difficulty of understanding the language, they are still part of our history and we should all know them. Studying classical literature, in my opinion, can only enrich us.

p175/ex11 But is that right?2 Some people in the class thought that it was a good idea but I was amazed that a lot of students were against it, especially as regards young children. People made many different points but the final vote showed that most of the class thought that more competition among young children was not a good thing.3 I definitely agree with that view.4 I feel very strongly that young children should be encouraged to enter competitions but not forced. Then, they will be more likely to continue doing sport when they are older and lead a healthier lifestyle.

Let’s do it your way if you insist. 5 So first, let’s agree on the topic and then look for some information about it. 6 I suggest you do the tests in a different hospital.7 I’m sorry but I think recording an interview in the hospital will be impossible.

Don’t worry – it wasn’t serious!I was cycling home from school when I hit a car.It wasn’t my fault. The driver hadn’t seen me and heturned right just in front of me. I couldn’t stop and I bumped straight into the car.An ambulance took me to hospital because I couldn’t walk. They took an X-ray and told me that my leg was broken. I had also broken two fingers. I had to stay in hospital. All the doctors and the nurses were very caring. However, I hated being in hospital. I got very bored.I’m glad I’m home now!

Her scarf had got caught in the escalator but instead of stopping, the escalator continued moving. In addition to this, I nearly slipped myself on the floor that had previously been cleaned. There was no warning sign.b)I hope that you close it to the public until you have either replaced or repaired it. Also, a member of the staff should have been close by to phone an ambulance.…your staff should be better trained in how to prevent accidents.I am sure that I am not alone in asking you to pay more attention to safety in the centre. You also need to have more staff available to help if accidents do happen.

p206/ex21 It was on quite late2 I watched it because it was about a subject we’re dealing with at school at the moment. Also, I really admire the presenter of the show – Brian Penry. 3 The programme was all about the planets. He also talked about whether we shall ever send people to planets like Mars and if we could live there in the future.4 The programme was really inspiring.5 Brian Penry makes boring facts sound very interesting and you can see that he loves his subject! There were also some fantastic pictures of the planet Mars taken by a robot.6 If you like this programme, you’ll also love Brian Penry’s science documentary series about the history of space travel. It’s on TV4 on Sunday evenings and I strongly recommend it.
