CKE Report 2015

The knowledge and command of grammatical and lexical resources in terms of phonetic/orthographic correctness as well as their range and structural and semantic complexity. (Szpotowicz et al., 2008:65)

(Scrivener, J. 2005)

‘Students often base their answers on single words that appear in the text without paying enough attention to the context. It is of utmost importance to explain the need for analyzing the meaning to the students before the exam’ CKE Report 2015

# Words at play

Make use of the vocabulary lists. Ask students to make Taboo cards (eg. 5 cards each) and collect them after each unit for revison. Make a multiple choice test using Quizz works or, better yet, ask students to make one J They can easily make an open gap test using Zander – they will learn quickly that only certain words may be deleted from a sentence! Let them play at lyricstraining where they need to type the missing words as they listen to their favourite songs.

Teach students that not all words go together even if they translate as the same word into Polish!

Choose tasks that show students the same words in different collocations. Encourage them to look for new collocations of the words they learn.

Collect chunks and play with them to turn them into automatic reactions.

# Chunks

Use translation wisely as an effective tool for raising Students’ linguistic awareness so that they avoid the traps of literal translation and increase precision of expression. Show them typical mistakes that result from negative language transfer and play translation games:

Ask Students to translate phrases that are not easily translatable. Demand precise language in writing tasks.

# Grammar Encourage Students to identify the ‘traps’ that are often based on literal translation. Introduce ‘minimal grammar pairs’ and help them understand that grammar also carries meaning.

• Writing task: • Set the task and word limit • 10 words and 5 phrases • 3 examples of the target grammar structures • Peer-reading (underline the target language;

identify similarities)
