“What is Local Development?” — a question the students will be asking them-

selves frequently in the next two years as they acquire both knowledge and skills

to be able to introduce, support and coordinate processes of change and trans-

formation at local level.

During the introductory program (7 to 10 September) the new stu-

Prof. Futó (in photo right) closed the introductory pro-

cantly: WHAT IS LOCAL DEVELOPMENT?

“Our experience in Ljubljana”

From the first days of our arrival we met a lot of very nice people who were ready to help, which made us feel very much at home. The fact that almost everyone spoke English made communications easy for us as foreign students.

University registration process was simple. The course coordinator, Professor Miro Hacek and tutor, Simona Kukovic also briefed and guided us through every step regarding our academic and residency permits.

Regarding the programme, both mandatory and elective courses are good, compre-hensively designed to give students a new perspective and open up new horizons of think-ing. All the professors are knowledgeable and fluent in English, which is a very important aspect of our studies in Slovenia as Erasmus Mundus Mobility students. The library is very rich and the standard of the facilities are extremely high.

The food is good; public transport cheap and frequent, making commuting very easy for students especially. In one sentence, it is a unique place: in the combination of people, nature, environment and culture.

“Our experience in Ljubljana”

Without any doubt, time spent in Ljubljana was a life-changing and highly positive experience. The quality of life, cooperation with the University of Ljubljana, as well as the friendly, open-minded environ-ment were definitely among the highlights of my stay in Slovenia.

Although I come from Serbia, a country that shares recent history with Slovenia, I was more than surprised by the progress Slovenia has achieved in many areas, especially in those related to some of the subjects in this Master program course, such as local development, environmental protection and after all – the sustainable and wise path, where everyone can clearly see the direction in which Slovenia is heading.

Although I come from Macedonia as a former and co-federal Yugoslav Republic of approximately the same size and length of independent governance as Slovenia, observing the Slovenian pillars of development and inte-gration into the International and European Alliances set as prevalent priorities of my country, has been an asset and beneficial experience.

I have learned that regardless of the country’s mag-nitude, a decent degree of self-awareness, collective and cross-sectional governance are keys for the sustainable development of a country.

Referring to the fact that not the country itself, but the people are the ones we become attached to, I would say that the positive and friendly environment, convenient urban functioning, administra-tive and bilingual mitigation between the physical and state entities, entertaining student- and night-life, cultural diversity and artistic performances, affordable cost-of-living, breath-taking nature and exploring opportunities, available city and sport facilities, as well as the highly collaborative academic corps of the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Ljubljana, with special gratitude to the Local Program Coordinators, Prof. Miro Hacek and Simona Kukovic, have exceeded my expectations and made my six-month stay extremely pleasant in every aspect.

Ljubljana as the capital city is maybe smaller when compared to other European capitals. However, it can provide everything that is necessary for a good and interesting life.

In the end, I need to say that nothing of this would be possible without the more than profes-sional and I would dare to say - friendly relationship we had with representatives of the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Ljubljana. In such environment, it was really a pleasure to study there, especially as we were given an opportunity to choose among many optional courses which were perfectly coordinated with our main subjects.
