3. Unit Summary

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to identify client fitness requirements, administer a pre-exercise health screening questionnaire and advise clients of appropriate fitness programs, services and facilities. This involves using industry endorsed risk stratification procedures when determining the provision of suitable advice regarding services and referral requirements. This unit applies to fitness instructors who work in a variety of fitness locations such as fitness, leisure and community centres. These individuals typically work independently with some level of autonomy in a controlled environment. Work is performed according to relevant legislation and organisational policies and procedures. No occupational licensing, certification or specific legislative requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

4. General Assessor Instructions

4.1 How to conduct this assessment Please note that each assessment task within this document has a set of assessor instructions aligned with each of the tasks and their parts. The information below is provided as a general overview for the assessor. It is important that prior to conducting any of the assessment tasks, the assessor undertakes the following:

target group and available learning environment. (Be sure to check with the audit mapping document for this unit to ensure any contextualisation or changes you make still covers the unit requirements)

4.2 Document format Through this document you will notice we have used two different title and subtitle colours which are Blue and Green. The BLUE titles or subtitles represents sections of this assessment that are meant for the learner or student to complete or read. They consist of:

ASSESSMENT TASK 3 – PRACTICAL OBSERVATION INITIAL INTERVIEW AND HEALTH SCREENING

ASSESSOR or WORKPLACE SUPERVISOR INSTRUCTIONS These instructions must be followed when assessing the student in this unit. The checklists on the following pages are to be completed for each student.

Assessment Guidelines Please ensure that you have read the student instructions for this assessment task prior to administrating this task in order to understand the student requirements. This assessment task has been designed to be completed either during the learners work placement block in a real fitness organisation or as a simulated role play practical assessment. Minimal customisation is required regardless of the assessment approach selected. Regardless of the assessment environment selected the learner must be supervised by the courses assessor or a suitably qualified workplace supervisor. Learners are also allowed to video record their assessment task and submit the recording as evidence providing they gain the client’s permission to be on camera first.

Workplace Supervisor Criteria This assessment task can be observed in one of two ways. They are:

1. Scheduled assessment times with a course assessor or 2. Verification from an appropriately qualified supervisor (such as a manager or supervisor with a

Certificate IV or Diploma in Fitness and a minimum of two (2) years’ experience working within a gym or fitness centre)

Specific Workplace Supervisor Instructions | How to use the Assessor Checklist The assessor check should only be completed by a suitably qualified supervisor such as a manager or supervisor who holds a Certificate IV or Diploma in Fitness and has at least two years of experience working in a gym or fitness centre.

Things to consider when observing the learner and recording your observations on the checklist:

Keep the form and your comments brief and to the point.

If you wish to ask the learner any questions in order to determine their underpinning knowledge or seek clarification on their performance you may do so. Place both the question and the learners responses in the comments section provided within this checklist. The questions can be closed (i.e. “Yes” or “No” or “Not Applicable”), but make some provision for additional comments if required.
