School Food and Beverage Marketing Assessment Tool

Ths tool assesses food and beverage advertsng on school campuses. To answer some of the questons, you wll need to walk around the school campus to observe

any advertsng, marketng or promoton of foods or beverages. For other questons, you wll need to ask the students or staff at the school such as the prncpal, vce prncpal, teachers, cafetera manager, athletc drector, or student club representatve. Informaton should be collected for any food or beverage, whether you consder t healthy or unhealthy. Please make sure to capture all food or beverage advertsements or marketng, ncludng those n languages other than Englsh.

In addton to fllng out ths assessment form, you may want to use a dgtal camera to take pctures of the food and beverage advertsng and marketng you fnd or take samples wth you f approprate—examples nclude dsplays of chps, candy or sodas n snack bars or school stores, advertsements on vendng machnes, logos on equpment or scoreboards, posters advertsng food tems, book covers, or napkns. These pctures and samples may become helpful to llustrate examples of marketng occurrng at the school. Use the hghest resoluton settng on your camera to ensure prnt-qualty photographs.

Introduction to School Personnel:We would lke to talk wth you brefly today as part of (nsert name of program/collaboraton). Ths tool s assessng the locatons and types of food and beverage marketng and advertsng found on hgh school campuses. We are nterested n any food or beverage marketng, regardless of whether t s for healthy or unhealthy foods. Examples of the types of advertsng and marketng we are nterested n nclude posters, vendng machne advertsements, logos on equpment, and advertsements n any school meda. We are also nterested n other forms of marketng, such as food or beverage company taste-tests and product gveaways, sponsorshp of events, and other food-related fundrasng actvtes. We would lke to talk wth you today to see f these less-obvous forms of marketng are happenng at your school.

The results of ths assessment wll descrbe the types of food and beverage marketng found on school campuses n the dstrct; ths nformaton wll be useful to health professonals and educators who are concerned about chldren’s health and the types of food messages chldren are exposed to n schools. Any nformaton you provde wll be reported anonymously and wll not be lnked to your name.

Recruiting students to participate:Recrut one student to partcpate n the assessment at each school.Take advantage of contacts you have n the schools/dstrcts to lnk you to a teacher who can help recrut students. Work wth a Marketng or Busness teacher who may have students nterested n advertsng. Choose a student who s n grades 10 to 12 and has a hgh degree of famlarty wth the campus.Prepare a thank-you “gft” or reward for the student and/or teacher; teachers are always grateful for classroom or educatonal materals. You may want to provde teachers wth the assessment materals and offer to follow-up wth results.

Conducting the assessment:Schedule ntervews for the student to talk wth school staff, and accompany the student on the campus walk-around and ntervews. Talk wth staff that can answer most of the questons, frst try the prncpal. Other staff you may need to talk wth nclude food servce staff, athletc or actvtes drectors, or dstrct currculum drectors (to ask about corporate sponsored classroom materals). Follow all school protocols when on campus and when gettng a student out of class (passes etc.).Assess all areas wth marketng/advertsng (some vendng and/or food servce areas are not obvous); check areas you mght not expect to fnd marketng/advertsng (.e. the clnc or lbrary). Allow adequate tme to do the assessment and ntervews (3 hours) and wear comfortable shoes.Make copes of the completed assessment forms for your fles.
