24TH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME

In the Gospel for this Sunday, Jesus teaches the need for us to forgive those who harm us (Matthew 18: 21-35). There is a temptation to quantify forgiveness as Peter tried to do, but Jesus' point is that forgiveness is not about quantity – how many times we offer forgiveness to another. In the parable, the king's forgiveness is like God's forgiveness, and it changes us, helping us to be as forgiving as God.

The lesson is clear: if we heard God's mercy while showing no mercy to others, we risk losing the effects of God's mercy in our lives. The harm we do each other is nothing in comparison with humankind's sin against the infinitely good God! Yet He sacrificed His own Son on the Cross, in order to wipe out the offense. God puts no limit to His mercy. And this is what He expects of us. Mercy is the face of God, and mercy must be the face of His children. Otherwise, He won't recognize us. Look in the mirror today. Who do you see?

24° DOMINGO DE TIEMPO ORDINARIO

En el Evangelio de este domingo, Jesús nos enseña la necesidad de que perdonemos a los que nos hacen daño (Mateo 18. 21-35). Existe la tentación de cuantificar el perdón como Pedro intentó hacer, pero Jesús dice que el perdón no se trata de la cantidad: cuántas veces ofrecemos perdón a otro. En la parábola el perdón del rey es como el perdón de Dios, y nos cambia, ayudándonos a ser tan indulgentes como Dios.

La lección es clara: si acaparamos la misericordia de Dios mientras no mostramos misericordia a los demás, corremos el riesgo de perder los efectos de la misericordia de Dios en nuestra vida. ¡El daño que nos hacemos el uno al otro no es nada en comparación con el pecado de la humanidad contra el Dios infinitamente bueno! Dios sacrificó a su propio Hijo en la Cruz, con el fin de acabar con la ofensa. Dios no pone límite a su misericordia. Y es lo que espera de nosotros. La misericordia es el rostro de Dios, y la misericordia debe ser el rostro de sus hijos. De lo contrario, nuestro Padre celestial no nos reconocerá. Mírate en el espejo hoy. ¿A quién ves?

Peter approached Jesus and asked him, “Lord, if my brother sins against me, how often must I forgive? As many as seven times?” Jesus answered, “I say to you, not seven times but seventy-seven times. That is why the kingdom of heaven may be likened to a king who decided to settle accounts with his servants. When he began the accounting, a debtor was brought before him who owed him a huge amount. Since he had no way of paying it back, his master ordered him to be sold, along with his wife, his children, and all his property, in payment of the debt. At that, the servant fell down, did him homage, and said, ‘Be patient with me, and I will pay you back in full.’ Moved with compassion the master of that servant let him go and forgave him the loan. When that servant had left, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a much smaller amount. He seized him and started to choke him, demanding, ‘Pay back what you owe.’ Falling to his knees, his fellow servant begged him, ‘Be patient with me, and I will pay you back.’ But he refused. Instead, he had the fellow servant put in prison until he paid back the debt. Now when his fellow servants saw what had happened, they were deeply disturbed, and went to their master and reported the whole affair. His master summoned him and said to him, ‘You wicked servant! Youth Nights began last week and will continue on Wednesday nights! Here’s a

glance at their time together.

School is back in session! Teachers, students and administrators have our prayers as they

venture into a year like no other!

Thank you very much to all who helped with the egress window and St. Francis garden on the north side of the rectory garage! It looks

wonderful and the window work has kept the water out of the basement!
