Queridos amigos en Cristo,

El próximo fin de semana, nuestra diócesis realizará The Catholic Relief Services
Collection, colecta que ayudará algunas de las comunidades más marginadas del
mundo. Proporciona servicios para inmigrantes y refugiados, brinda ayuda
humanitaria en los casos de desastres naturales y aboga por la paz y la justicia en el
mundo.
En Centroamérica, hay más de 1 millón de jóvenes que no asisten a la escuela y
están desempleados. Prolifera el crimen y la violencia. Guatemala, Honduras y El
Salvador tienen unas de las tasas de homicidio más altas del mundo. La violencia
reprime el crecimiento económico, limitando aún más las oportunidades laborales y
forzando a muchos a que huyan.
Con su apoyo en este colecta, jóvenes podrán participar en YouthBuild, un
programa que les proporciona oportunidades y habilidades necesarias para la vida.
YouthBuild ofrece capacitación, reingreso a la escuela, colocación laboral y servicios
sociales. Más de 5,000 jóvenes ya han participado en YouthBuild y el 80 por ciento de
los participantes han encontrado trabajo, regresado a la escuela, o ambas cosas.
En nuestra Diócesis, Catholic Relief Services Collection financia a ocho agencias

Next weekend we will have the Catholic
Relief Services Collection, which helps some
of the most marginalized communities in
our world. It provides services for immi-
grants and refugees, humanitarian aid in the
wake of natural disasters, and advocacy for
peace and justice.
In Central America, there are more than 1
million young people out of school and un-
employed. Crime and violence run rampant. Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador
have some of the highest murder rates in the world. The violence stifles economic
growth, further limiting opportunities for jobs and causing many to flee.
Through your support of the Catholic Relief Services Collection, young people can
participate in YouthBuild, a program that provides them necessary life skills and op-
portunities. YouthBuild offers training, school re-entry, job placement, and social
services. To date, more than 5,000 young people have participated, 80 percent of
whom have found work, gone back to school, or both.
In our Diocese, the Catholic Relief Services Collection funds eight Catholic agen-
cies, including the Care of the Holy Land and Peter’s Pence. Through these groups,
Catholics in the U.S. provide food shelter, and other vital human assistance to Jesus
in the disguise of suffering people every day.

The Pettis County Catholic Community sent the winners of the K of C Free Throw Contest on to Tipton on February. Here are our winners: 14 year old boys - Boyd Callis 13 year old boys - Osvaldo Garcia (filling in as runner up to Tony Farr) 9 year old boys - Will Cashman Congratulations to each of you on a job well done. These three young men moved on to the competition in Colum-bia, MO; but sadly didn’t place. We are proud of the accom-plishments! Special Collection

Funds from this collection help provide food to the hungry, support to displaced refugees, and bring Christ's love and mercy to all people here at home and abroad. On the weekend of March 17/18, the Sedalia Chapter of Missouri Right to Life will hold its annual Signature Sun-day. Your name will be among the hundreds of other pro-life Missourians on the MRL website that are dedicated to saving the lives of unborn children
and those threatened by euthanasia, infanticide, and assisted suicide. Your donation will be used by the Sedalia chapter to fund booths and events, messages on billboards, and purchase educational materials. “We shall not weary, we shall not rest until every human being created in the image and likeness of God is pro-tected in law and cared for in life.” Fr. Catholic Social Teaching - Rights and Responsibilities
Jessie Bazan (Social Commitments, US Catholic Jan. 2018)
explains that human dignity ensures people have the
rights to live dignified lives. This includes the rights to
food, clothing, shelter, rest, medical care, and economic
security in times of hardship. Catholics view these rights in
the context of community, meaning we are responsible for
helping one another flourish.
Suggestions for Lent
· Commit to regularly calling your local and state
representatives to make your voice heard on issues
affecting human dignity
· Protest peacefully outside your state capital - The
most effective way to be heard is to show up!
· Discuss social justice issues with friends and col-
leagues. Are you concerned about pollution, racial
tensions, or other issues? Talk about solutions.
Everyday Stewardship
Can you recite the Ten Commandments by heart?
Several years ago a national US survey found more people
could identify the ingredients in a Big Mac and name the
children in the Brady Bunch television show than recite the
Ten Commandments. Of course, being able to recite them
is not nearly as important as living a life in harmony with
them. However, if we simply live to not break them then
we are only living out half of our discipleship.
Every commandment calls us to action beyond the
simplicity of its words. We are not to kill, but we are also
called to support life. We are not to steal, but we are also to
share what we have freely. We are to have no other Gods
before our God, but we also need to actively praise and
glorify Him.
To live a moral life is to do more than follow rules
and laws. It is to actively live in a way that gives witness to
the Good News of Jesus Christ. This way of living is stew-
ardship. As we focus more on the penitential message of
Lent, we need to not just reflect on what we have done
wrong, but equally what we have failed to do. To be given
so much by a loving God and not share those things with
God and His people is wrong as well. Perhaps as we reflect
on these things we might find ourselves adding something
to our lives that will last for many Lenten seasons to come.

2018 Lenten Regulations & Admonitions for the Diocese of Jefferson City
As another Lenten journey of conversion begins on Ash Wednesday, February 14, 2018, and ends with the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday, March 29, 2018, Holy Mother Church calls all Catholics to a deeper spirit of penance, fasting, almsgiving and prayer, “which express conversion in relation to oneself, to God, and to others” (Catechism of the Catholic Church # 1434 & 1969).
In order to foster a greater spirit of penance, of reparation for sin, to encourage self-denial, and so guide us more closely in the footsteps of Christ, Holy Mother Church reminds us of the following obligations of fast and absti-nence during Lent and also admonishes us all to deeper prayer and worship. 1. Abstinence: all persons who have already cele-
brated their 14th birthday are bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, all Fridays of Lent and Good Friday.
2. Fasting: everyone, from the celebration of their
18th birthday to their 59th birthday, is bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Fasting is generally understood to mean eating only one full meal each day. Two other partial meals, suffi-cient to maintain strength, may be taken; but to-gether they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids are allowed. Voluntary fasting on other weekdays of Lent is highly recommended. But please note: when health or ability to work would be seriously af-fected, neither the law of fasting nor the law of abstinence obliges. These are minimal penitential practices and should not be lightly excused. If in doubt, please consult your parish priest. Other recommended forms of fasting, as regards alcoholic drink, needless television, video games, internet use, and social entertainment, are of true spiritual value and strongly encouraged.
3. Almsgiving: The act of giving to the poor, in the
most ancient tradition of the Church, is an expres-sion of penance, a witness of fraternal charity, and an expression of Lenten conversion. Therefore, all Catholics are encouraged to support generously the charitable works of the whole Church: through regular stewardship to their parish, support of charities, and their generous response to the di-ocesan Catholic Stewardship Appeal.
4. Prayer: In order to deepen one’s love for Christ,
Catholics are urged all the more to participate in the Sacramental life of the Church during Lent by attending daily Mass and frequenting the Sacra-ment of Penance and Reconciliation.

2. Ayuno: todos, a partir de los 18 años y hasta los 59
años de edad, están obligados a ayunar el Miérco-les de Ceniza y el Viernes Santo. El ayuno normal-mente se entiende como comer solamente una comida completa al día. Se pueden hacer dos co-midas adicionales parciales, suficientes para man-tener la fuerza; pero juntas no deben ser iguales a otra comida completa. No está permitido comer entre comidas, pero los líquidos si están permiti-dos. El ayuno voluntario en otros días de la Cuaresma es muy recomendado. Pero por favor tenga en cuenta: cuando la salud o habilidad para trabajar estuvieran seriamente afectadas, ni la regla del ayuno ni la de la abstinencia son obligatorias. Es-tas son prácticas de penitencia mínimas y no de-ben ser excusadas a la ligera. Si tiene dudas por favor consulte con su párroco. Otras formas recomendadas de ayuno son en rela-ción a beber bebidas alcohólicas, televisión inne-cesaria, videojuegos, uso de internet y entreteni-miento social, son de valor espiritual y son muy recomendables.
3. Donar: El acto de dar a los pobres, es la tradición más antigua de la Iglesia, es una expresión de pe-nitencia, un testimonio de caridad fraternal y una expresión de conversión de Cuaresma. Por lo tan-to, todos los católicos son alentados a apoyar ge-nerosamente obras de caridad de la iglesia entera: a través de su compromiso regular con su parro-quia, apoyo a caridades y con su generosa res-puesta a la Campaña de Administración Católica Diocesana.
4. Oración: Con el fin de profundizar en el amor de Cristo, se exhorta a los católicos a participar en la Vida Sacramental de la Iglesia durante la Cuaresma asistiendo a la misa diaria y frecuentando el sacra-mento de la Penitencia y la Reconciliación.

St. Patrick Church Interior Repairs
Over the past couple of years, several maintenance issues
have been addressed with the church from replacing the roofs
and gutters on the church and rectory to updating the light-
ing. We will soon begin the next phase which will involve inte-
rior repairs. These repairs have been made possible with your
contribution to the maintenance funds. With our continuous
giving to the maintenance fund, it will support additional
maintenance projects. A one=time additional contribution will
be welcomed to maintain the health of the maintenance fund
for St. Patrick Church. Please use the March envelope for this
one-time special request. A presentation will be made at the
February 24th and 25th weekend Masses on the maintenance
projects of St. Patrick Church.

Daughters of Isabella Minutes The Daughters of Isabella met February 12, 2018 at the Knights of Columbus Hall. Theresa Rider led the rosary and Linda Hoffmann called the meeting to order. Fries will be March 9, 2018, with Ann Dove chairing the event. The Salad Supper will be on April 9. Connie Thompson reported that she would have a signup sheet next month at the meeting for the talks from the pulpit. Desserts, drinks and paper goods will be pro-vided by the circle with the mem-bers bringing salads and prospective new members. RCIA Breakfast will be on March 31 at 8:00. Theresa Rider re-ported that she will have a signup sheet at the next meeting. The other members of her committee are
Shirley Harms, Linda Korte, and Mary Jo Kientzy. International Convention will be held August 5-9 in Montreal. Linda will be attending the conven-tion. She had the estimates of the cost of the trip. Our circle has always paid for the regent to go, which in-cludes registration, hotel room and transportation. Members recited the clos-ing prayer and ode. The next meet-ing will be March 12 at 6:30pm at the Knights Hall with Karen Benson conducting the meeting as Linda Hoffmann will be out of town. The rosary will be prayed at 6:10.
