13th Sunday in Ordinary Time July 1, 2018

From Father George . . . . Who of us do not feel a strong surge of emotion in listening to, or better yet, singing 'America the Beautiful' . The music and lyrics of this song - or may I say 'hymn' - speak not only to the individual soul, but also to the soul of our great nation about what truly makes America great. The story behind this powerful piece of music begins with Katherine Lee Bates, who wrote the original poem in 1893 and revised it twice in 1904 and 1913 which ultimately became the words of the song. She made a trip to the summit of Pikes Peak in Colorado, which was her inspiration for the lyrics to America the Beautiful. There is a plaque there today and the story is best told by Katherine herself: "We strangers celebrated the close of the session by a merry expedition to the top of Pike's Peak, making the ascent by the only method then available for people not vigorous enough to achieve the climb on foot nor adventurous enough for burro-riding. Prairie wagons, their tail-boards emblazoned with the traditional slogan, "Pike's Peak or Bust," were pulled by horses up to the half-way house, where the horses were relieved by mules. We were hoping for half an hour on the summit, but two of our party became so faint in the rarified air that we were bundled into the wagons again and started on our downward plunge so speedily that our sojurn on the peak remains in memory hardly more than one ecstatic gaze. It was then and there, as I was looking out over the sea-like expanse of fertile country spreading away so far under those ample skies, that the opening lines of the hymn floated into my mind." What about "America the Beautiful" speaks to our greatness? I would suggest the following:

A deep appreciation for the beauty of nature - the sky, the fruitful fields, the majestic mountains - all pointing to the majesty of our God who has given us this bounty to care for as good and faithful stewards.

A keen awareness of our need for God to shed his grace on us - a grace that can perfect us and make us into the best version of ourselves as a nation.

A call to brotherhood - and sisterhood - from sea to shining sea - among all the peoples of the land - of every race and creed and nationality and orientation - recognizing that we are all children of the one God.

A profound respect for our founding fathers and mothers and for those who made the ultimate sacrifice of giving their lives in the name of freedom who challenge us to define success as nobleness and to count as gain the things that are of God.

An authentic humility that asks God to mend our every flaw and a vision of the alabaster cities that are undimmed by human tears - the Heavenly Kingdom that has God as its light!

Do you see the common thread in these five points - it is God. America finds its greatness on submitting herself to God's law and letting the wisdom and goodness of God inform our every word, thought and deed. Let us hold staunchly to the independence we celebrate this week by remaining one nation, under God, with liberty and justice for all.

God bless America! St. Vincent Martyr

Stewardship Corner

When you pray to God, you are talking to someone you can’t see. So prayer is the purest form of faith, which is described as “being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see” (Hebrews 11:1). Spending time in prayer is important to keep our relationship with Jesus strong and our faith alive, just as keeping in touch with a treasured friend keeps that relationship thriving. Almost two months ago, many of us made a commitment to prayer through our annual stewardship renewal. Now might be a good time for a check-up. How is your prayer commitment going? Please join in praying for Pope Francis’ special intention for July: That priests, who experience fatigue and loneliness in their pastoral work, may find help and comfort in their intimacy with the Lord and in their friendship with their brother priests.

SVM AMERICAN RED CROSS BLOOD DRIVE Thank you to all the donors and volunteers who participated in SVM's June 10 blood drive. Your commitment to help save lives is truly appreciated and makes a difference in the lives of patients in need. The blood drive collected 28 precious pints which translates to 84 lives saved! OUR LADY OF MT. CARMEL Monday, July 16 at the 8:30 a.m. Mass, we will celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, the Patronal Feast of the Carmelite Order of Friars and Sisters. Its spirituality finds its inspiration in the prophet Elijah, who saw from Carmel a cloud in the distance that would bring rain after a drought. That 'rain bearing cloud' became an image of the savior bearing Mary. Intercessionary prayers will be offered at the conclusion of the Mass, scapulars will be blessed and distributed and a light reception will follow. All are invited. If anyone wishes to bake for the reception, please call Joan Graziano at 973-377-4151.

Feliz domingo. P. Darwin L.
