Yasuni, unique bio-diverse reserve

A million of hectares of almost pristine forest.

A paradise of vegetation where flora and fauna took refuge during the last ice age

Home to Waorani, Shuar, and Kichwa indigenous peoples, and the Tagaeri and Taromenane – Ecuador’s last non-contact indigenous groups

Yasuni, an initiative to change history

Page 36: Ecuador life at its purest

To confront the challenge posed by climate change to the future of mankind Ecuador’s innovative proposal:

To leave beneath the Yasuni National Park 840 million barrels of oil there are within the ITT block by doing so, 407 million metric tons of carbon emission that would be released into the atmosphere by the burning of these fossil fuels are avoided.

In exchange Ecuador requests that the International community assumes its corresponsability by contributing no less than half of revenues that would have been received by selling these oil reserves.

Page 37: Ecuador life at its purest

Direct benefits of initiative

Non emission into the atmosphere of the 407 million of tons of CO2

Non exploitation of these petroleum reserves The conservation of the immense biological richness within

the Yasuni National Park , one of the most bio-diverse reserve on the planet

Respect for the cultures of the indigenous tribes who live in isolation within the boundaries of Yasuni National Park

Improve social development of areas of influence of Yasuni initiative project

Reforestation of one million hectares A decisive impulse to the country’s transition from an

extractive economy of petroleum exploitation towards a more sustainable development model with broad use of renewable energy, respect for biodiversity, and increased social equity.

THE YASUNI ITT FUND – THE CGY’S CERTIFICATES OF GUARANTEE

They will become a financial instrument issued to the contributors and donors by the Ecuadorian State.

They guarantee that all the oil reserves that are now underground will remain there permanently.

They are a non-interest accruing with no maturity date given their permanent nature.

They could only be redeemed if the Ecuadorian government were to order the exploitation of oil within the ITT fields.

All income generated by the nation’s sales of CGYs will be deposited in an international trust fund managed by the United Nations Development Program UNDP.
