God is with us in the sacraments. The sacraments mark times in our lives that are especially important or significant for us in our lives – times when we are happy; times when we are sad; times when we make important decisions.

In the sacraments, the Risen Jesus shows us the same love, care and forgiveness of God, as Jesus showed to those who lived with him on Earth.

God is present in a special way when we receive a sacrament. Each sacrament helps us to celebrate and remember God’s love for us.

Sacraments require us to have faith in which we have to respond to the invitation given to each of us by Jesus.

In Baptism, the church celebrates whenever a new member is brought to be part of the faith community. The Christian community, who shares the gift of the Spirit, welcomes the candidate who is named.

“I baptise you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit”.

God loves us always and we say sorry to him for any wrongdoing in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. We ask for his forgiveness. We become friends again with God.

“I absolve you from your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit”.

In the Eucharist, we hear again the call of Jesus to work for a world of truth, justice, peace and love. We come together as a community to offer our support to one another. We are assured again of the presence of the Risen Jesus, helping us to do the work of God.

“Save us, Saviour of the world, for by your Cross and Resurrection you have set us free”.

In Confirmation we say “yes” to the call of God to work with other people to build a better world for all. The community assures us of the help of the Holy Spirit in the work that we are about to do.

“Be sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit”.

When two people promise to live together and to love one another for the rest of their lives, their family and friends gather to celebrate and to offer their support. They are assured that the Risen Jesus will be with them to help them.

“Wear this ring as a sign of my love and fidelity. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit”.

In the sacrament of Holy Orders, we celebrate God’s call to people to serve others in our community of the church as deacons, priests and bishops. When people accept God’s call to take on special responsibility, the community gathers to offer its support and help. Those called are assured of the presence of the Holy Spirit to help them in their work.

“Almighty God, grant to this servant of yours the dignity of priesthood”.

In the Sacrament of the Sick, we celebrate the healing presence of God to those who are sick, giving them strength, hope and peace, just as Jesus did when he was on earth.

“Through this holy anointing, may the Lord in his love and mercy, help you with the Holy Spirit”.
