Guidance Officer NEWS Overcoming Difficulties with Procrastination, Motivation and Work Avoidance The home environment tends to have numerous distractions that can make it difficult to get work and study tasks done. Here are some strategies to help your family be productive at home:

Create a school-like environment o Remove unnecessary distractions and clutter. e.g. TV, needy pets. o Make sure that all of the necessary materials are available, so that leaving the workspace is minimised.

Structure the order of tasks to suit your or your child’s needs/preferences.

Remember a little positive reinforcement for a job well done. o Praise. Praise has been studied in depth, and it is quite an art form.

Set a realistic timetable and expectations. Remember that younger children need shorter work sessions and more frequent breaks than older children, due to a shorter attention span.

Stay connected to school, to help to hold you both accountable for completing work, as well as providing much needed human connection.

Place barriers between you and your distractors to make it harder to engage in a preferred activity e.g. put the game console in a cupboard, unplug the TV at the wall.

Set a timer if engaging in a preferred activity during a work/study break, to ensure that you don’t spend more time than planned. Devices, such as iPads also have screen time settings, to make it easier to limit a child’s use.

If you must procrastinate or avoid a task temporarily, try engaging in “good procrastination,” which is a task that is more important than the one you are avoiding. For example, you may choose to spend 20 minutes writing ideas for the book you really want to write, or start using that meditation app that you downloaded months ago, but haven’t opened.

Parent Guide: How to Juggle Work, Teaching and Parenting The following are ideas to support families who now find themselves managing home schooling and/or flexible working arrangements. The ideas come from a range of sour ces and are based on largely on anecdotal evidence. Please use your personal judgement and research, when deciding what may work for you.

Have clear boundaries and expectations, which are communicated to your family members. For example, during a conference call you expect your children to not interrupt, work/play quietly and to leave questions until after the call is finished.

Where there is more than one adult at home, negotiate and share tasks.

Get up earlier or stay up later, if your workplace allows for flexible hours.

Set up online learning for older children at the start of the day (always be aware of cyber safety).

Have independent, quiet, engaging activities pre -planned for times when you have calls, to minimise interruptions.

Have realistic expectations while working and learning at home. Remember to be kind to yourself and don’t judge yourself on what you hear others are doing. Every child and family are different and remember that how people present themselves on social media, often glosses over the messy reality of their lives.

Focus on one thing at a time.

Focus on task completion, rather than expecting you and your children to work for the length of a work or school or day. Working with one-on-one support is generally more efficient that classroom learning, so what your child might learn in one day at school, he/she might complete in 2-3 hours of focused work at home.

Make sure your house is safe, so you know that your children remain injury free while you focus on your work. This is more relevant if you have little ones that are constantly exploring their environment.

If you need to work in the same room as your children and find it difficult to deal with the background noise, you may consider investing in a set of noise cancelling headphones. Another tip is to use the mute button on your phone, when you are not speaking during a work call. This will stop the noise of your children from intruding in the conversation.

Hospitality NEWS Year 12 Hospitality Offer Take-Away Lunches Commencing on Friday of Week 6, Term 2, our Year 12 Certificate II Hospitality students will be preparing take-away lunches. These will be offered to our Year 12 student cohort and staff – unfortunately, we need to limit the number of orders! As Covid-19 has put a stop to all catering functions that would normally occur throughout our school year, our students will not have the opportunity to prepare the “Simple Dishes” and serve them to “customers”. This is a requirement for the successful completion of the qualification. At this stage, we plan to offer Chicken & Pasta Stirfry in Week 6 and Scandinavian Open Sandwiches in Week 7. Notifications and order forms will be made available shortly.

Other NEWS We all looked forward to seeing our Year 11 and 12 students back with us on Monday 11 May! Here are a few photographs to mark the return.

Office staff welcomed students back in person rather than online. To commemorate our students’ ‘Return from Iso’ we have Instagrammed the occasion! Tait has been at the school for the past three weeks with parents who are essential workers, but is waiting to see his friends on May 11.

Maryborough State High School’s Creative Industries Staff are ready and waiting to get back into learning! Head of Department Brian Speirs (seen here guitar in hand) is excited to have our students back into face to face learning when Year 11s and 12s return on May 11.

As part of Maryborough State High School’s 139 year history, we have a present for our Year 12s that is almost ready to be revealed. While student have been at home learning online, the school has created a unique quiet study space for our retuning seniors, with the room fully restored to its 1881 glory. Maryborough State High’s wellbeing dog Angel has been lonely; waiting for our students to

return. We were able to give her the good news that Year 11 and 12s would return on Monday 11 May, much to the relief of Angel and Carol Gollschewsky (our Head of Department, Wellbeing and Targeted Support). Our School Services Window was ready to receive our Year 11 and 12 Students on Monday 11 May. Nelson, one of our Wellbeing Dogs, was available for assistance and pats from 8:00am.

Things that happen when student numbers are lower than usual. Mrs Green had a new friend arrive in her classroom Friday 8 May. He/she stayed for a good part of the day and was rather curious.

Science NEWS 7B and 7F Science Year 7s have been exploring the unit 'Forces' and have had to improvise a few things in order to do some experiments at home. Hunter Kimber was successful in figuring out the relationship between load, effort and fulcrum in levers. He also found out how friction affects movement. Skye Cox and Olivia Sommerfeld observed Newton's First Law of Motion by carrying out crash test dummy experiments, with and without 'seatbelts', using some interesting test subjects. It was wonderful to see students and parents get involved in the lessons. Thank you parents for all your support. Sucheta Naidu Teacher
