Firstly, attendance is on a significant improvement trend. I like to focus on assessment as the base for all other information; if a student is not physically at school, their education suffers and they cannot achieve their best. 2017 Term 1 2016 Term 1 2015 Term 1 As can be seen from the table above, Maryborough State High School attendance is significantly improving in the past two years in all categories, with a whole school attendance improving almost 6%, and the students who are at school 95% of the time or greater (the dark green section) is significantly improved. This is a tribute to the work of staff, who put their time into quality lessons for their students; to students, who are taking their studies seriously; and to parents, who are recognising the importance of our message of ‘Every Day Counts’. From a point of view of behaviour, the school has also significantly improved with an enormous reduction in behaviour issues across the board, in some case up to 70%. This has resulted in an increase in enrolments from other schools and from outside of the Maryborough area, with an increase from our numbers at the start of the year. One of the most positive aspects of our school is the diverse ways in which a student can succeed and achieve in a multitude of fields. No matter what area of proficiency a student is able to demonstrate – sporting, cultural, academic, social – we are able to work with your student to achieve their personal best. In the next term I will be going to primary schools and talking about the benefits of a Maryborough State High School education. I look forward to starting the process for our 2018 Year 7s to become members of our school community. Our rewards day for our students who achieved a 15% improvement in their attendance will be held in Week 3 – delayed due to the early close at the end of Term 1 due to our weather event. We will be challenging our students to improve their Term 2 figures from Week 3 to 9 for this term ANZAC Day Representation We had close to 200 students and staff representing our school on April 25 at the public march for the 101st commemoration of ANZAC Day. Building and Construction Update

It’s all happening! I have signed off on the plans for ourPerforming Arts Building, which will form the centrepiece of theMaryborough State High School Creative Industries Precinct.I will be sharing the plans for the new building in the nextnewsletter. At this stage we are anticipating construction tocommence in June, with the new building ready for the 2018school year. At the same time, we will be constructing a newHair and Make Up facility for our Certificate courses, situatednext to the Hospitality rooms on the northern campus. It isanticipated that these two courses will work in tandem,providing a training organisation open to the public. You willbe able to come on in, get your nails or hair done, and geta cuppa and morning tea from next door! Our new facility willbe ready for the 2018 intake of Nationally Recognised Training(NRT) students in Hairdressing and Makeup/Beauty. The schooland the State Government are investing a significant amount ofcapital works into the future of our students.

Hats – not just for show!

Students should have a school hat – not merely for sun safety,but also as it is an integral part of our school uniform. Studentsare reminded to have their hat on at all times while outside.If students do not have a hat with them, they will be directedby a teacher to remain under E Block at lunch breaks and adetention issued. Any queries can be made to a student’s YearLevel Coordinator.

MSHS Anzac CeremonyMonday, April 24, Maryborough State High Schoolcommemorated Anzac Day with a formal service in the gym.Students wore their formal uniform on the day, which reflectedthe regard our school holds for the ceremony. Our guestincluded: Maryborough RSL CEO - Jason Scanes, Llew O’BrienMP, Warren Truss, Bruce Saunders, P&C President - LeeanneMcIndoe, and Jenny Elliott. Mr Scanes presented the RSLAddress and The Ode.

School Captain Jayden Phillips read an emotional letter from anANZAC soldier who was present at Gallipoli. Jacinta Cumminsread the Welcome to Country. The Principal Address,highlighted the strong links our school maintains with Gallipoliand the ANZAC’s. Vice Captains Nikki Harmer and NicholasSchneider, along with Brittney Burgess, also spoke during theservice.

The service began with Mr Dan Yates on the didgeridoo. Theofficial party entered the gym to the haunting strains of a singlepiper and accompanied by Naval Cadets acting as a Guardof Honour. The Last Post, and Reveille were played beautifullyby Liam Wilson. Nicole Whittaker and Grace Slade performedsongs as a tribute to our soldiers throughout the service. TheMaryborough State High School Choir sang the AustralianNational Anthem, followed by the Maryborough State HighSchool Concert Band with the New Zealand National Anthem,led by Mrs Suzanne Richardson.

It was wonderful to see the reverence shown by all studentsduring this commemoration, highlighted during the Laying ofthe Wreath. Two representatives from each year level wereasked to participate, they were both a credit to our school anda reflection of the respect shown by their fellow students on theday. Our students can be very proud of themselves and theirconduct during this very special commemoration.

Maryborough State High School students also participated ingreat numbers during the Anzac Day March on Tuesday April25. Every student wore their formal uniform with pride andtreated the day with the respect it deserves. It was wonderful tosee all our local schools form a Guard of Honour for the manyveterans, cadets, and other organisations in the main parade.Participating students will receive a commemorative ANZACcoin, specially minted with the MSHS crest, in thanks for theircommitment to honouring our soldiers.

Relay for Life

The Community Committee are organising school teams toparticipate in the Relay for Life on the 5 and 6 May. If studentsare still interested in being a part of this fantastic communityevent, please see Mr Hogan at the Science staffroom. Therewill also be a teacher team involved in the event that is beingorganised by Mrs Groth. The cost is $30 per person(registration and shirt costs). Money needs to be paid online by1 May. Students will be advised of a meeting early in Term 2.

The Arts

Creative Generation

During the holidays the Creative Generation exhibition wasopened in Brisbane at the Gallery of Modern Art (GoMa). FromMaryborough State High School four entrants were successfulin the Regional Exhibition last year and one of those artists,Georgia Whiteway, was selected to have her work awardedan Excellence Award and exhibited at GoMa. In 2016, anastounding 520 submissions from 195 schools were receivedwith the Teacher Selection Panel shortlisting 90 artworks.These were presented to the State Selection Panel whoselected 33 Excellence Award recipients and seven RegionalEncouragement Award recipients. Georgia was delighted tosee her work exhibited at GoMa during the holidays and ofcourse Ms Clout was extremely proud of her achievement. Theexhibition is from 08 April to 30 July. Entry is free. HPE Department – Sports Report

Gala Day Sports Trials – 10-12 yrs 17 March

Gala Day was held on Friday 17 March. We had twenty-two12 year olds competing in Football (Soccer), Hockey, Netball,Rugby League and Tennis. Despite the heat, studentscompeted well. We had a number of students make it into theMDSS (District) teams: Eden Wheeler, Rugby League; Paige,Netball; Xavier Devenish, Jordan Hoffman and Tom Norris forFootball (Soccer); and Tamika Nagle, Hockey. Well done tothese students! They will be travelling to various venues nextterm to compete in the 10-12 years Wide Bay SportingCarnivals.

Cross-country Carnival

A successful school cross-country was held in near perfectconditions on Wednesday 19 April during the first week backin Term 2. The event was rescheduled from Week 10 becauseof the rain. The weather held off for all the running events, butunfortunately on the walk back to school the rain came down.A large group of students participated in 3, 4 and 6km runs,depending on their age groups. Athletics carnival

The school’s Athletics carnival will be held over two days inWeek 10 on Wednesday 21 June and Thursday 22 June. Thiscarnival will be run at school, on the School Oval. These areconsidered normal school days and all students areexpected to attend. There will be plenty of track and fieldevents to suit everyone. Students are encouraged to wear theirhouse colours and come ready to cheer on their team.

Thursday 1st June

Sporting Academy – Hockey and Soccer

Training for soccer and hockey has commenced in themornings from 7:45-8:30am on Tuesday. It is recommendedthat students attend the trainings to get more individual trainingtime with the coaches and to help prepare them for teamgames. The hockey students will be holding three Bunningsbarbeques over the next few terms to help raise money for theirtrip to Toowoomba for the Schools Cup. Information can becollected from Mrs Taylor at the PE staffroom.

Oz Tag – Fraser Coast High School Challenge(Gala Day)

This year the Gala Day will be held on Tuesday 6 June. It isearlier than last year (held in August) due to the All SchoolsCup. We are looking to have another strong representationfrom MSHS this year. Team lists have been up outside the HPEstaffroom for a few weeks already. If you still wish to sign up,please do so in the next week. Any queries please see MrRossini or Mrs Groth.

Oz Tag – All Schools State Cup – SunshineCoast - July

Students have the opportunity to participate in this three dayevent, on the 14, 15 and 16 July. At present, we have a Year 9Boys team and are looking at fielding a Year 9 Girls team. If anystudent is interested they need to see Mrs Groth or Mr Rossiniin the HPE staffroom.

Interschool Sport

Term 1 has been extremely busy for our Interschool Sportprogram. Both the Cluster 1 (summer) and Cluster 2 (winter)trials, for both Maryborough District and Wide Bay took placelast term. MSHS had 34 students take part in the Cluster 1MDSS trials. From this, 19 students were selected to representMDSS at the Wide Bay trials. At these trials, the followingstudents were selected in Wide Bay teams: Alec Braund (U/15Tennis), Bailey Steinberg and Jacinta Kaulave (Open Softball)and Chas Copas (U/14 Cricket squad).

At the Cluster 2 trials, 53 students represented MSHS, with32 students being selected in MDSS teams. The Wide Baytrials, which were held on 20 March, saw very wet conditionsin all centres, particularly Gympie. The following students wereselected in Wide Bay teams: Jayden Phillips (Hockey), BrandonClayton (Rugby League), Chris Moloney (Basketball), CaitlynHanrahan and Matthew Fulton (U/15 Football).

We wish all students attending State Championships in thecoming months the best of luck. A very big thank you to all theteachers who have taken teams to these trials and also to Mrs

Maxine Sorensen for her hard work in processing the forms andfinances.

Leonie Mitchell – Sports Coordinator

Broncos Challenge CupWednesday of Week 1, after competing in the MSHS CrossCountry, Caitlyn Podetti, Sapphire Clark, Nadia Wilson, MicaelaCasey, Summer Knight, Tara Schonrock, Jacinta Cummins andJasmine Penny competed in the Broncos Challenge Cup. Allgirls played a round robin system against teams from UranganSHS, Hervey Bay SHS, Aldridge SHS and Xavier CollegeHervey Bay. The only Maryborough State High School team tomake the grand finals this year, they played well and claimedrunners up position. They played very well and all displayedgreat sportsmanship and team work. Tara Schonrock wasnamed player of the match in this game.

Large Hadron Collider ExcursionAfter Cyclone Debbie foiled our original plans to visit Brisbanein the last week of Term 1, grade 11/12 physics and grade 9STEM students were finally able to go on our excursion. Onthe 20 of April, we had the opportunity to visit the QueenslandMuseum where we explored the Museum, Sciencentre,MathsAmazing exhibition and the Large Hadron Collider exhibit.There were many fascinating topics at the exhibit and, bywatching a 180º video, we experienced the day they revealeda huge discovery – finding the Higgs Boson proton – by tellingit from the perspective of three physicists at the event. It wasa wonderful event that provided new, exciting knowledge foreveryone present.

2017 Next Step SurveyThe Queensland Government is conducting its annualstate-wide survey of all students who completed Year 12 in2016. The Next Step survey is a brief, confidential survey thatgains a comprehensive picture of the employment, study andlife choices made by Queensland school completers in the yearafter they finish Year 12.

Between March and June, all our students who completed Year12 last year can expect to receive instructions to complete aweb-based survey or a telephone call from the QueenslandGovernment Statistician’s Office to complete the survey. Pleaseencourage them to take part. If their contact details havechanged, please assist the interviewer with their updated detailsor forward the survey to their new address so they canparticipate.

Blood Donation InformationAs a school community we can make changes to lives. One ofthe things we will be doing next term is visiting the Hervey BayBlood Donation centre.

We are taking expressions of interest from students 16 yearsand older that are interested in donating blood as part of theschool group.

At this time we are looking at transporting 4 students a week/fortnight on a Thursday to the Hervey Bay Blood Donationcentre using the school bus.

Students participating will be given a tuckshop voucher on theirday of donation. This will enable them to order water and asalad roll or sandwich, ensuring they are well hydrated and fedon the day.

At 2pm the students will be transported to Hervey Bay,returning to the school about 5pm/5.30pm.

Students need to login to the Red 25 website (link below)and complete the “Can I donate quiz” under the schools andstudents tab at the top of the page, before putting their nameon the list.

A Blood Donation parent consent form will be issued tostudents prior to their donation day. Students under 18 yearsof age can only donate once every 12 months. Parents, otherfamily members, friends and teachers can log on to Red 25 andgo to the ‘register or join a group’ tab to count in our numbers.Maryborough State High School is already registered; use thistitle for group name when joining.
