Today is the feast of the Baptism of the Lord. Having celebrated four weeks of Advent, then Christmas, Holy Family Sunday, New Year’s and Epiphany, with today’s feast we return back to Ordinary Time. That does have a kind of restful, comfortable sound to it, doesn’t it? Nothing hyper, nothing special, just ordinary.
On the one hand that makes sense – we can’t always operate at fever
pitch. If all time were special, what would we do for the times that indeed are special? We have to let the rubber band relax after it’s been taut a while or eventually it will snap.
But “ordinary time” does not mean that nothing is going on! After all, the
Baptism of the Lord was not important so much for what it put an end to – the hidden, behind-the-scenes years, the years of preparation – but for what it inaugurated: it was the beginning of Jesus’s ministry.
Something the same could be said about us here at St. Paul’s. This week
we swing back into our familiar forms of ministry as Jesus continues to work here among us. I could not help but muse about that as I saw (and entered into my calendar) Jen Sanders’ revised calendar for PSR and Sacramental Preparation for the new year.
The virus continues to change and affect everything and so a revised
calendar was necessary. We now cannot celebrate the sacrament of Confirmation with the large gathering at the Cathedral on February 27, for example. But that does not mean we will not celebrate the sacrament of Confirmation! It simply means that we have to be creative. And so Bishop Thomas has given us pastors the faculty to confirm our own parishioners this year. So here at St. Paul we will do that on May 8-9. Having multiple ceremonies means we can have fewer confirmands and their families and guests at each ceremony, ensuring more social distancing and a safer celebration. And instead of having a lot of pressure trying to get all the candidates prepared for a date that is only two months away, now we have the whole spring to make sure they are well prepared. And in the process I notice there will be some new and creative, interesting and fun elements that now will be possible incorporated into the process.
Similarly, First Holy Communion, the preparation for which was getting
scrunched due to all the quarantining etc., now instead of being scheduled for the end of April is instead going to be celebrated at all the Masses on the weekend of June 5
th and 6
th, the feast of Corpus Christi, the Feast of the Body and Blood of
Christ. How fitting! (When the Bishop found out about that idea he remarked to other parishes about how appropriate and creative that timing was!) And this year we are going to try to have the traditional Eucharistic Procession that marks that feast which the virus nixed last year.
And so on – the emphasis during this ordinary time of 2021 is on allowing
the Lord to continue his work among us as effectively as possible, doing as much of our ordinary ministry as we can, just in extraordinarily creative ways. The goal this new year is not “normalcy” but effectiveness, indeed excellence. It’s going to be a good year!

Many prisons have been severely impacted with the Coronavirus pandemic, making 2020 an especially difficult year for those on death row. You have filled your heart with compassion and opened it up to them with your donation. Having the bimonthly Compassion newsletter as a part of their lives has given them the opportunity to write and read articles that have inspired them and others in positive ways.
Since 2001, hundreds of those on death row have opened their hearts to impart their feelings, share a poem, expose a tormented soul, or offer a simple thank–you. Compassion newsletter is fortunate to be the recipient of their thoughts to tell their story and for you in making that possible.

North Coast Regional Peaceful Protest Against Abortion Sunday, January 17, 2021
Huron County Right to Life in conjunction with Erie County Right to Life will have a Car Caravan to protest against the 1973 Supreme Court decision (Roe vs. Wade) that legalized abortion through all 9 months of pregnancy.
Participants are asked to assemble at Whitney Field/Contractors Stadium, parking lot (St. Mary’s St.) by 3:00 pm. There will be an invocation and welcome, followed by a car caravan through town. Cars may be decorated with pro-life messages.
Social distancing and masks are required for the assembly and invocation prayer.
The car caravan will return to Whitney Field/ Contractor Stadium parking lot for a benediction prayer.
