Hello Martensville,

Welcome to June! As we ride into the final month of an epic school year, I can’t help but look back at the

many highlights and look ahead to all the excitement yet to come.

The new school is obviously the first highlight. From the moment we moved in, the building has been an

inspiring place to learn and work. I am excited to see how learning and teaching might change and evolve as

we continue to learn how to occupy this new structure and its many different pieces. We have already

utilized the theatre for numerous school events, including the school production of the The Crucible, the

OSAC production, Shape of A Girl, the MADD presentation, and a whole bunch of other smaller events. Even

the City has utilized the space for it Variety Night.

The 2016-2017 school year will see the completion of the renovation and the re-occupation of the old school.

It has been receiving a significant facelift and will house some state-of-the-art Practical and Applied Arts

learning areas. We hope to be back into the IA and Home Ec. areas in September.

Additionally, we are very excited to see the development of our playing field take shape. We are the

incredibly fortunate beneficiaries of the generosity of MHS parent, Lyle Wilson, for the enormous amount of

work that has gone into the project so far. Hundreds of truckloads of fill and topsoil and countless hours of

grading have brought us to the point you see today. And it is not done yet. We are working with a local

landscaper to install irrigation and will be reaching out to the community as other parts of the project evolve

and take shape. This playing field will be the first field developed by and for the school. We look forward to

seeing generations of students and community members enjoy and make use of it.

Our grade 11’s are getting ready to take their annual trip to Cypress Hills. The trip is intended to create a

Looking Back and Looking Ahead experience for our future grade 12’s. We hope students bond and commit

to making their grade 12 year a positive one. Each attending student will receive letters of support written by

parents, extended family, and friends that express encouragement to them as they move into an exciting

transitional year in their lives.

Graduation is on June 16th. We are happy with the decision to move graduation closer to the end of the

school year. We are certainly seeing our grade 12’s remaining more focused as we move into the final few

weeks of the year. Details around the graduation day activities can be found within the body of this

newsletter. Because we combined grade 12 awards with graduation, Awards Day for this year’s grade 9 – 11

students will take place in the early part of the 2016-2017 school year.

Speaking of Awards, our Career and Guidance Counsellor, Donna Bouchard, who has played a pivotal role in

helping students prepare for post-secondary education (from course planning, to award applications) will be

leaving us this year. Thank you Donna for the immense contribution you have made to MHS in your short

time with us. You will be missed. Ms. Cooper will be transitioning into Donna’s role. We know she will do

great.

Final exams begin on June 22, the week after graduation. The exam schedule is posted in the following

pages. Report cards will be handed out on June 30th. Students unable to pick up their report cards will

receive them in the mail. Graduation certificates, photos, etc, will not be mailed out due to excessive cost.

They will be kept for the summer and can be picked up the following fall.

Finally, I would like to encourage everyone, in this exciting time of year, to remember to talk about and make

good decisions around driving and celebrating.

When and where are the final exams held? All morning exams will begin at 9:00 a.m. Generally, an exam for

a class is written in its regular instructional space.

What happens when I am finished my exam? Students are required to stay for a minimum of one hour and a maximum of three hours. Students exiting the exam room should remain quiet in the hallways and as they exit the building. Following their exam, students have self-directed study time.

What do I bring to the exam? Generally, students will need a pen, pencil, and eraser. Individual teachers will let you know if you require extra materials such as a geometry set, calculator, formula sheet, novel, etc. A reminder that i-pods/i-phones/etc. are NOT allowed on your person during exams, and cannot be used as calculators during exams. If students do not own a dedicated calculator, make sure you purchase one soon.

When do I return my textbooks? Homeroom teachers will be collecting textbooks on the last day of classes. If you need it to study, you must return it prior to writing the final exam. If you have lost your textbook, inquire about the fee ahead of time and bring the replacement fee prior to your final.

When will my report card be ready? Report cards will be ready for pick-up the morning of Thursday, June 30th at the school in the front foyer.

Graduation 2016 – June 16th, 2016

3:00 Exercises begin promptly – please advise your guests that anyone who is not seated before 3:00 will have to

wait outside until all graduands have entered the auditorium and are seated on the stage

When the program ends, guests who are attending the banquet, should make their way downstairs to Centennial

Hall.

5:45 Banquet begins promptly with the entrance of the graduands. Please be sure all guests are seated before

5:45, as grads will need to maneuver through the tables to get to their families.

Dance to follow (Centennial Hall) – guests will be asked to leave Centennial Hall until all of the tables have been

cleaned and removed.

Parents have reserved seats for the Exercises in the Auditorium – these will be distributed about a week before

grad.

All other guests have RUSH seating. These tickets will be distributed by June 3rd. Please be sure you and your

guests bring the Exercises tickets.

When you receive your RUSH seating tickets, you will also be given your table number(s) for the banquet. You will

NOT receive tickets for the banquet. A banquet map will be emailed home indicating where the tables are situated

in Centennial Hall. A map will also be posted at Centennial Hall.
