A time to celebrate with friends and family over too much food and gift giving. Our deep cultural heritage often sees us sitting around a beautifully decorated pine tree and eating plum pudding and a variety of roast meats (because just one option on Christmas isn’t enough?) on a hot summer/wet season day. It’s a day of carols and tinsel, of wrapping paper and laughter. And yet, Christmas can be one of the hardest times of the year. The first Christmas without a loved one. Feeling the physical distance of the separation between families- especially in Darwin. Trying to live up to an expectation our commercial world ramps Christmas up to be. To some, a very personal pain of loss, grief and the reality of the broken world we live in. We know that the whole reason we celebrate Christmas, is Jesus. And as amazing as Nanna’s plum pudding is, Jesus didn’t come so we could stuff ourselves with rich foods and sit around decorated pine trees (as pretty as they are!). He came for the lost, for the broken hearted, for the hurting, for the poor. He came for all people, from the very saddest to the most happy. He opened his arms to all people, to invite all into his Kingdom- a kingdom of love, joy and peace. The hope we have in Christmas is not one based on goodwill amongst men, but of grounded hope in the saving love of our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Regardless of whether we eat plum pudding or pavlova, roast turkey or prawns, whether we are in Darwin or interstate, with our own family or an adopted one, let us remember to pause and give thanks for the gift of this little baby. This little baby called Immanuel, the very Son of God who rescued us from darkness and has given us reason to have joy regardless of where we are, what we eat and who we are with.

Christmas time can be a rich, beautiful part of the

year. A time to celebrate with friends and family

over too much food and gift giving. Our deep

cultural heritage often sees us sitting around

a beautifully decorated pine tree and eating

plum pudding and a variety of roast meats

(because just one option on Christmas

isn’t enough?) on a hot summer/wet

season day. It’s a day of carols and tinsel, of

wrapping paper and laughter.

And yet, Christmas can be one of the hardest times

of the year. The first Christmas without a loved one. Feeling

the physical distance of the separation between families- especially in Darwin. Trying to

live up to an expectation our commercial world ramps Christmas up to be. To some, a

very personal pain of loss, grief and the reality of the broken world we live in.

We know that the whole reason we celebrate Christmas, is Jesus. And as amazing as

Nanna’s plum pudding is, Jesus didn’t come so we could stuff ourselves with rich foods

and sit around decorated pine trees (as pretty as they are!). He came for the lost, for

the broken hearted, for the hurting, for the poor. He came for all people, from the

very saddest to the most happy. He opened his arms to all people, to invite all into

his Kingdom- a kingdom of love, joy and peace. The hope we have in Christmas is not

one based on goodwill amongst men, but of grounded hope in the saving love of our

Saviour, Jesus Christ.

Regardless of whether we eat plum pudding or pavlova, roast turkey or prawns,

whether we are in Darwin or interstate, with our own family or an adopted one, let us

remember to pause and give thanks for the gift of this little baby. This little baby called

Immanuel, the very Son of God who rescued us from darkness and has given us reason

to have joy regardless of where we are, what we eat and who we are with.

Middle School NewsLast week was an exciting time for our Year 9’s as they celebrated completing Year 9 with each other and their families over dinner

at Rydges in Palmerston.

Our Year 7’s enjoyed a special Chinese banquet together last Wednesday. A big thanks to the families who cooked most of the

food, and to the staff who arranged the event. It was delicious and a great way to conclude their study of Ancient China.

College AchievmentsIt was wonderful to see the large contingent of Marrara and NT Christian College families, friends and staff at the Northern Territory Science Awards Ceremony last week, held at Charles Darwin University. The Royal Australian Chemistry Institute and the Science Teachers Association (STANT) combined to present prizes and awards recognising outstanding achievements in 2019.

A fantastic achievement this year was winning the Rowe Scientific Early Childhood School Award from entries for Transition to Year 3 classes. We tied with another school for being the top achiever in Science in early childhood!

Our talented students received gold and silver awards in the Chemistry Titration Competition and Science Prizes in the Territory Young Scientists Awards. Congratulations to all award winners!
