Dear Parents and Friends,

Welcome, welcome one and all! I hope that your Christmas break was everything you hoped it would be. It has been a pleasure to catch up with families and hear all about their adventures across the break. I find myself, once again, very excited about the coming year. 2018 is already jam packed and I am confident that we will not only learn a lot, but have fun too.

One of the greatest things about a new year is the opportunity it presents to start afresh. We all have the chance to take the lessons learnt from last year and begin again, anew. Our expectations are high and we find ourselves making resolutions to accomplish certain things or get to certain places. We often offer these to the Lord and beseech Him for his blessings and assistance in achieving these things.

I wonder though, if apart from these ‘to do’ lists we should also make a ‘to be’ list. I love to get this done. I am also conscious that I need to strive to be a better person. I want to be compassionate, dedicated, convicted and be able to find joy in all situations. When I look at this ‘to be’ list and reflect, I recognise that I am compassionate, dedicated and love life. However, if I am honest with myself, the truth is there is room for improvement.

Galatians 5:22-23 (The Message Version) reminds us:

"But what happens when we live God’s way? He brings gifts into our lives, much the same way that fruit appears in an orchard—things like affection for others, exuberance about life, serenity. We develop a willingness to stick with things, a sense of compassion in the heart, and a conviction that a basic holiness permeates things and people. We find ourselves involved in loyal commitments, not needing to force our way in life, able to marshal and direct our energies wisely."

In a devotion I read recently, I was reminded that wishful thinking will not produce these things. They come from a life lived with intent and relationship with the Lord. It went on to say that the more we get better at receiving these from Him, the better we become at recognising the opportunities to use them and express them toward others. Interestingly, Galatians tells us that when we get these things right we will discover not only what is really important on our ‘to do’ list but how best to go about achieving them.

As we find ourselves venturing into a new year, I wish you all the very best as you work through your ‘to do’ list. I would also encourage you to think about your ‘to be’ list and work on that too. I look forward to catching up with you soon.

Blessings,

Mr Andrew Manning - Principal
