Winter dreams yield to spring plans and summer fun as Porsches in the Ohio Valley Region are coming to life! Ex-plorations and tours along curvy surfaces resume in ear-nest. Internet purchases arrive and fill our garages while our imaginations conjure visions of autocross records, concours wins, and lap times. We set aside other winter indoor hobbies to get out, drive our Porsches and play with fellow PCA members on streets, in parking lots, at dealer-ships, and over drinks, food and fun stories. For OVR, spring kicked off in style at the Taj Ma Garaj where OVR and Mid-Ohio region jointly championed a killer social event that brought 278 members and a mul-titude of Porsches out on a blustery day that began with snowy conditions. It was nearly the perfect indoor activity for a day like this, sharing food, beverage, stories, laughs, and friendly competition. Thank you to Betsy MacDonell, MOR President, and the Mid-Ohio Region for sharing this event with us and partnering up so well to create some-thing so enjoyable for our members. I am proud to say that our OVR members showed off their knowledge by bringing home the inaugural Multi-Region Quiz Cup. Check out the pictures later in this issue to see the individual winners and the smiles on the faces of those who attended. This is destined to become an annual event – perhaps with three or more regions – and I hope to see you there next year.I attended the Zone 4 President’s meeting in mid-March where Michael Soriano, our Zone 4 representative, Cindy Jacisin, PCA National Secretary, and Ron Carr, former Zone 4 rep and PCA Region Procedures chair, presented some PCA research and talked about new initiatives and upcoming Porsche Parade at Jay Peak, VT. This week-end is a great opportunity to meet other region presidents, share best practices, and talk about what has and has not been successful in each of our regions. A persistent, recurring theme is “How do we engage members that haven’t gotten involved yet and introduce them to the many, diverse activities taking place in our regions?” PCA research shows that 27% of you haven’t attended a PCA region event in the last year. Of those, 65% cite as one reason, the fact that they are “too busy.” We understand that! Life is busy. But we also would like to think that if you did attend one of our events, you’d want to come back! Our events are filled with friendly people and great Porsches.50 percent of those who have not attended an event cited that they either “don’t know anyone,” that they “don’t feel welcome” or “have newbie jitters.” These are things the Board and Members-at-Large work hard to overcome. We are constantly inviting new members to our monthly social hour and meetings, sending email invitations out to great events like the recent one at the Taj, and talking with new members we meet about their interests. If we aren’t reach-

ing you, I encourage you to call me or any of the Board members. We would like to meet you! Our contact infor-mation is readily available on the web site at OVRPCA.org.

Be sure and check the calendar on the first page and mark the dates of the events you want to attend. I am proud of the schedule we have in place this year. Con-cours, autocrosses, our first ever Street Survival program for teen drivers, two high performance drivers education events, socials, charity events, and more! Rallye Porsche Mariemont (RPM) is our biggest casual gathering of Porsches and people and is scheduled on Saturday, Octo-ber 1. It is expected to be larger than ever this year! Finally, as we move into summer, I want to thank two of our biggest sponsors, Porsche of the Village and Porsche of Kings Automall. They are consistently behind the efforts of OVR and we are fortunate to have these two dealers in our region. And, as always, thank you to the many Board members of OVR who volunteer their time and energy helping plan and run our events so all of you can enjoy your Porsches! Enthusiasm is high as we shift into second gear and drive into summer!

Grant Karnes lifts the inaugural Quiz Trophy.

Street SurvivalJeff Renner - Member

It’s 2016, and OVR is adding a new program to the cal-endar. This year we will be sponsoring a Street Survival class for teenage drivers. The Tire Rack Street Survival is a teen driving program governed by the BMW CCA Foundation. Through the volunteer efforts of members of the BMW Car Club of America, the Sports Car Club of America, the Mercedes-Benz Club of America, the Porsche Club of America and the Audi Club of North America as well as other automo-tive enthusiasts who serve as the personal coach with each teen, over 100 schools will be held across the U.S. this year. The school's aim is to reduce deadly car crashes involving teenagers by providing them a controlled setting where they can gain invaluable experience in car control, all with a knowledgeable coach always at their side helping them to understand how important experience is over guessing when the unexpected happens on the road. The volunteers give of their time and talents to help our most valuable re-source, young people, gain experience that will allow them to make educated decisions when driving, rather than guessing what to do and whether they, their passenger or others sharing the road with them, will live or die.The event includes classroom instruction and in car in-struction. Some of the key points covered are:• Primary emphasis of the school is a "hands-on" driving experience in real-world situations.• Driving is done in the student's own car to teach him/her about its handling limits and how to control them.• Qualified coaches are in the car with the student through-out the entire day.• The course is wet down (in part) to allow the student to experience "mistakes" at a very slow speed. In this class, mistakes are learning experiences.• Challenging driving courses are created in a controlled area to allow the student to experience abnormal car behavior and then teach him/her how to handle the new situation.• This is not a course for learning how to drive at high speeds. • Safety and car control are the objectives. Our event will take place on May 7, 2016 at the Forest Fair Mall (Cincinnati Mills Mall, 1047 Cincinnati Mills Drive, Cincinnati, OH) from 9am-5pm. We will need volunteers for set up/take-down, in-car coaching and support for the event. Anyone who would like to be coach/instructor will be re-quired to complete the online class at http://bit.ly/1QdV8UX

There are 30 spots available for this event, and we already have people registered. If you have a child, grandchild, friend or someone you know who would like to attend they can register through the following site: streetsurvival.org under the May 7, 2016 event. We are looking for this to be a spectacular event! There is a spot for anyone to volunteer and assist to make this a success. We need volunteers for instructors, registration, course set up, traffic control, course workers, set up & tear down, and general staff. Each person will have lunch provided and a logo shirt for the event. We look forward to everyone’s support from OVR and hope to see you there.Any questions please contact Jeff Renner at [email protected] or Bill Kief at [email protected].

Wine TastingGrant Karnes - PresidentThe 2016 OVR PCA charity wine tasting will be on Friday, May 6 at 6:30 pm! This event was at capacity last year with more than 90 OVR wine tasters sampling 25 different highly rated wines and enjoying hot hors d’oeuvres. This year will be more of the same, but space is limited. Reg-istration will open soon on clubregistration.net at $30 per person. We are returning to the fabulous venue, Indian Hill Histori-cal Society's "Little Red Schoolhouse" located at 8100 Given Rd. (the intersection of Camargo Rd. and Given Rd.) If you missed this event last year, mark your calendar and be sure to join us on Friday, May 6. This is one of our few charity fundraising events for the year and our annual wine auction at the end of the evening provides an opportunity to bring home the wines you like. The historic Little Red Schoolhouse has a lot where you can park with us and display your Porsche in the flat-tering evening light. The location offers a picturesque, historic setting for this event. There will be a silent auction with several unique items to support Parkinson's Well-ness and Children's Tumor Foundation. There are sure to be some special Porsches on display. The doors will be open, weather permitting, and we hope to have a wonder-ful spring, indoor-outdoor evening enjoying fine wine and socializing amidst fabulous Porsches.

A light dusting of snow on the ground didn't stop over 175 OVR and MOR members from traveling to the Taj Ma Ga-raj in Dayton on April 9. However, the weather forced the separate tours from each region to the Garaj to be can-celled. Once at the Garaj, members enjoyed drinks, hors d'oeuvres, socializing and the late John Dixon's car collec-tion. The two regions squared off in a Tech Quiz written by Ron Carr and John Meyer. The top four scores for each region were added up to see who would take the inaugural Tech Quiz Cup. OVR won by a landslide, 69-45!

Editor's Note: OVR members Rene and Nicole Robichaud will be competing in the Cayman GT4 Clubsport Trophy East this year. The series consists of six races mostly on the East Coast. The first race was at Road Atlanta, April 1-3. For the enduro race on Sunday, Nicole placed 7th and Rene placed 3rd overall. The following copy is from pca.org written by PCA Club Racing.Nineteen new Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport cars. Three races. One new series. It all added up to a success-ful first weekend for the PCA Club Racing Porsche GT4 Clubsport Trophy East series. The first three races, two sprints and one endurance race, of the inaugural 18-race championship season were com-pleted this weekend at Road Atlanta in Braselton, Georgia. Frank Selldorff of the Northeast PCA Region and his co-driver, Andrew Davis, took the victory in the final race, an 80-minute endurance event, in the #65 Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport on Sunday. The Kelly-Moss Road and Race duo took a 38.433-second victory over Jason Hart in the #47 NOLAsport Porsche after recovering from a rough start and dominating the second stint. Rene Robichaud, from the Ohio Valley PCA Region, rounded out the overall podium with his third third-place finish of the weekend in the #89 Kelly-Moss Porsche Cay-man GT4 Clubsport.Robichaud, whose daughter, Nicole, also competed this weekend, was also the winner in the Masters class, com-pleting his weekend sweep with three top-step finishes.

"It was an absolutely fantastic weekend," Robichaud said. "You have to thank a lot of people to get this far. My Kelly-Moss team was great. They gave me a car that you could run real hard; the setup was just perfect. I really want to thank the Porsche Club, Porsche Motorsport and Porsche Cars. My daughter, Nicole, has really grown this weekend in the sport. She was just flying in this last race. We're just having so much fun. I've been driving Cup cars for the most part. I'll tell you that this car is so easy to drive hard, and when you make a mistake in this thing, it is less likely that it will end in tears. I'm sticking with the Clubsport."It's an absolutely fantastic package. When you're with with 18, 19 great guys and gals all driving the same car, there's nothing better."

OVR will once again host two Driver Education events at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. The dates for 2016 are June 10-12 and October 14-16. The Fridays for both of these events are for instructors and advanced drivers. To qualify as an advanced driver you must have driven at least 10 DE’s and preferably have driven Mid-Ohio before.Mid-Ohio, a 2.4 mile road course with 15 turns, is a world known course that has hosted numerous types of vehicles over the years. This year they will be hosting Vintage Motorcycles, Formula 4, Trans Am Series, Honda Indy 200 Series, NASCAR XFINITY and SCCA runoffs.Unfortunately, the price for OVR to rent the facility has gone up tremendously over the years. We raised our prices last year and even though they will charge us $4,000 more this year for each event we WILL NOT raise our prices for 2016. However, if the rental price continues to increase we will be forced to raise our rates for the 2017 season. For those of you who have never tried a DE before it is great fun and requires you to do nothing other than have your car inspected prior to the event, and get numbers for both sides of your car. OVR has loaner helmets for you. We have a free pizza party Friday night where you will meet your instructor. We have once again negotiated great rates with the Quality Inn and Comfort Inn in Bellville, Ohio. Our program has become so popular that all run groups from novice to expert were sold out well before the event dates in 2015. If you register prior to 30 days before the events there is a $50 discount on the pricing. Have you registered yet? We are more than 50% filled for June al-ready. Go to clubregistration.net and register. Don’t be left out! June is just aroung the corner. Last year, many folks who delayed were unable to get into the event. See you at wonderful Mid-Ohio.

2016 DE EventsDennis Okin - Vice President

2016 AutocrossNicole Dubnicay-Wellen - Autocross Committee

Ohio Valley Region / Porsche Club of America will kick off the 2016 autocross season with five events starting in April and ending in September. Racing will be held at Forest Fair Mall, the current location of Bass Pro Shops, near the intersection of I-275 (exit 39) and Winton Road, north of Cincinnati. For those new to the sport, autocross is a fun and excit-ing way to drive your vehicle on a small track against the clock plus we have instructors. Drivers will maneuver around a cone lined course with sharp curves, slaloms, straightaways and tight handling situations. All of this is accomplished in a safe and controlled environment with one driver on course at a time. Safety is the primary focus at an autocross. A 15 minute lunch break has been added to the schedule and the entry fee has increased to $30 per driver for the 2016 season. Awards are given to fastest time in class, most clean runs, best time in each run group and year end champions plus year end prizes at the annual meeting. Autocross is an inexpensive way to gather like minded people, push your driving limits, learn about safe handling in your vehicle and have fun. The events are open to driv-ers with valid driver’s licenses, Porsche not required. We are hoping for more participation from other car clubs in the surrounding area so feel free to invite your friends. All manufacturers are welcome! Last year we had some very fast cars including: Miatas, Corvettes, Mercedes, Cama-ros, VWs, and Scions. If you’re interested in autocross and have questions, please contact Bill Kief at [email protected].

The local Porsche 356 car club was loosely organized by a small group of 356 faithful 40 years ago, and has been gathering at local club member venues for the annual Bull Session ever since. In 2001, the Drie Staaten Gruppe was born and the club became an officially recognized 356 Registry affiliate. After missing a few years, the club reenergized the Bull Session and Family Picnic at Sharon Woods Park in 2008. The club has grown to over 75 mem-bers, most whom own Porsche 356s.The Drei Staaten Gruppe will celebrate their 40th Anni-versary with a two day casual and fun weekend on May 21 – 22, 2016. The long standing Bull Session and Family Picnic will be held on Sunday, May 22. There will be a host hotel available for those travelling from out of town. The Bull Session will be held at the Lone Oak Pavilion in Sharon Woods Park. This is a free event but we will ask for an RSVP, to be published in March, to ensure we have enough food and drinks for lunch. We will have our own private shelter and a large parking area for your car. Lunch will be served around noon. Activities will include a swap meet for all Porsche related goodies, a People’s Choice competition for some really neat Porsche AG Club Tro-phies, and our always challenging Porsche Trivia Quiz. In

Saturday evening will be capped off with a B&B Riverboat dinner cruise. Greetings PCA Zone 4 Members,Before all of our regions’ driving sea-sons began, it was time for us to hold our annual Zone 4 Presidents’ and DE Meetings. This year we were joined by National Secretary Cindy Jacisin as well as several other members of the Na-tional Staff. The meetings comprised a weekend full of activities which began on Friday night with a Welcome Reception and Dinner at Zia’s located at the Docks at International Park, where we were given the use of their private dining room. The next morning started bright and early with the Presidents’ Meeting. Attendees had the opportunity to win some fantastic prizes generously donated by the organiz-ers of the Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix, Griot’s Garage, and the Olive Garden. I am pleased to announce that every region within Zone 4 was represented, with most regions sending a number of members, as we filled the meeting rooms at the Maumee Bay Resort. The afternoon session consisted of several presentations including the Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix, Parade, and the use of social media to increase both membership and attendance. After an informative and enlightening day of interactive discussions, many of us went out to enjoy an evening of dinner and entertainment in our own private VIP area at the Holly-wood Casino for some social playtime. Sunday’s meeting was dedicated to addressing DE questions and concerns led by John Krecek, a member of the National DE Com-mittee. In addition, Zone 4 Safety Chair Chip Henderson discussed the work he has done as part of the National Safety Committee. A great deal was accomplished during these meetings. Most importantly, I wanted this weekend to be a balance of productive discussion and education as well as a chance for us to socialize and bond through fun, light hearted activities thereby promoting my main theme for the weekend, which was to encourage all of us to join forces and come together in order to start working as 1 cohesive Zone thus providing even more opportunities for our members to enjoy the camaraderie that PCA offers. As I mentioned last month, after a great deal of hard work and lobbying, I am pleased to announce that there will again be a Porscheplatz at the Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix the weekend of June 3-5. The Porscheplatz includes an exclusive “Porsches Only” Car Corral which allows Porsches to park on Belle Isle. You must have a PCA Car Corral ticket and be driving a Porsche vehicle to park on Belle Isle (club membership is not required). In addi-tion, Your single or multi day ticket includes premium Car Corral parking on Belle Isle, a hospitality tent, video feed of the races, complimentary beverages, reserved seating in Grandstand 2 and easy access to the pits and conces-

sions. Another highlight of our Porscheplatz is presen-tations by race teams, drivers, and sponsors such as Michelin and Mobil 1. We’ll have some giveaways as well. Tickets are available at www.detroitgp.com/corrals. For those travelling from out of town, we have made ar-rangements with The Henry Autograph hotel and have set up a room block. For reservations call 888-709-8081 and mention the Porsche Club room block. In addition, I am currently in the process of organizing a Michigan State Police escorted motorcade on Saturday from The Henry Autograph Hotel on to Belle Isle concluding at the Porsche Car Corral. This is a very unique opportunity for us, but will only occur if there is enough interest and participation. There are a number of wonderful events taking place this year throughout the zone. We are working hard to coor-dinate all of the region calendars into a master calendar which is posted on the events page of the Zone 4 Website, http://zone4.pca.org. Be sure to check your local region’s website and newsletter for the latest details on the many events close to you that are being planned. Also, consider attending other regions’ events, such as:• May 6 is Ohio Valley Region’s Annual Charity Wine Tast-ing and Member Social• Southeast Michigan Region’s Devil’s in the Details event at Munk’s Motors is May 7• May 7 is Central Indiana Region’s New Member Meet and Greet at Tom Wood Porsche• Join Maumee Valley Region on May 7 for a Kentucky Derby Party at Porsche of Ann Arbor• Motor-Stadt Region’s Board Meeting at Spagnoulo’s in Okemos is May 10• May 13-15 is MORPCA’s Club Race and DE at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course• Western Michigan Region’s May Dinner Drive to the Dock at Bayview is May 14• May 14 attend the Cleveland Indians Game at Progres-sive Field with the Northern Ohio Region• Michiana Region’s Autocross at Tire Rack is May 15• May 17 is Rally Sport Region’s Waterford Hills Track Day• ARPCA’s All Member Dinner and People’s Choice Con-cours is May 21I look forward to having the opportunity of meeting each and every one of you at events throughout the upcoming year.
