Welcome Mark Logic User Conference 2008

Welcome to the Mark Logic User Conference. We are glad you are here and look

forward to spending some quality time together. We chose this years conference themeDiscovering Agilityin recognition of thefact that most of our customers are working to become more agile in how theydevelop products, in how they respond to changing user requirements, and in how theirorganizations cope with the vagaries of an uncertain future. We believe that MarkLogic helps organizations become more agile in all these dimensions and thus felt thatagility would be appropriate concept on which to center the conference.

This years conference will be bigger and better than ever before with 7 generalsessions, 34 breakout sessions, 3 tracks, 13 sponsoring partners, and countless hoursof effort spent on preparation to ensure the best content possible. Were also excitedto have a keynote address from illustrious Harvard Business School professor and

    Enterprise 2.0 visionary, Andrew McAfee.

Youll get a special preview of MarkLogic Server 4.0an exciting upcoming release ofour core product which well present both in a general session and discuss in many ofthe technical track sessions.

Weve left ample time for networking during the event because we know that this isa major source of value in conference attendance. So please dont hesitate to stickaround at the breaks, attend the welcome reception, and in general mix it up with theother attendees.

We are a customer-centric organization and we are here to serve you. The vast majorityof our engineering, professional services, and executive staff are here at the event andavailable to discuss your issues.

    Andrew McAfee

Andrew McAfee, the founder of the term Enterprise 2.0, joined the faculty of the

Technology and Operations Management Unit at Harvard Business School in 1998. His

research investigates how managers can most effectively select, implement, and use

Information Technology (IT) to achieve business goals. He was the recipient of a U. S.Department of Energy Integrated Manufacturing Fellowship for his doctoral research,

which focused on the performance impact of enterprise information systems such as

    SAPs R/3.

His current work falls into two categories. The rst is an ongoing investigation of

why large-scale IT initiatives fail so often and what general managers can do to guide

these efforts to success; some results from this work have been published in a Sloan

Management Review Article. The second is a project to understand what kinds of multi-

company IT-based efforts succeed, and what impact new technologies such as Web

Services will have on competition and collaboration.

McAfee developed and teaches the MBA course Managing Information Technology. He

also teaches Executive Education courses, such as Delivering Information Services, the

Owner/President Manager Program, the General Manager Program, Extracting MaximumValue from Information Technology, and Senior Executive Program from the Middle East.

He was awarded a Doctorate in Business Administration at HBS in 1999. He also holds

dual MS degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Management from MIT as a Leaders for

Manufacturing fellow, and BS degrees in Mechanical Engineering and in Humanities from MIT

Prior to coming to HBS, Professor McAfee worked as a consultant in operations

management, advising clients in a range of industries including aerospace, consumer

electronics, white goods, and OEM electronics.

He continues to consult, primarily on helping companies formulate and execute IT

strategies and he speaks frequently to industry and trade groups. His new book on

Enterprise 2.0 will be published by Harvard Business School Press in late 2008.
