THE BUILDING WAS ORGANIZED AROUND THE FOUNDATIONAL BELIEF THAT PROGRAMS CAN BEGIN TO SHARE SERVICE AND STORAGE SPACES, THEREBY ALLOWING THEIR USERS TO INTERACT AND ENGAGE WITH EACH OTHER MORE OFTEN. PROGRAM SURROUNDS THE CENTRAL ATRIUM, WHICH CREATES THE OPPORTUNITY FOR SPILL-OUT, SO THAT IT BECOMES A SPACE REMINISCENT OF A PUBLIC STREET FRONT.

AS YOU MOVE FROM THE ATRIUM TO THE MORE SPECIFIED PROGRAMS, INTERSTITIAL SPACES SUCH AS BATHROOMS, CAFE KITCHENS, AND LOUNGES ACT AS CONNECTOR AND OVERLAP SPACES. BY ALLOWING AN INTERNET CAGE AND A RESTAURANT TO SHARE A KITCHEN AND BATHROOMS, THE OVERALL SQUARE FOOTAGE IS REDUCED AND THERE EXISTS THE UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY TO USE ARCHITECTURE TO EXPOSE PEOPLE TO SOMETHING THEY MAY NOT HAVE ORIGINALLY INTENDED. BOTH VISUALLY AND PHYSICALLY CONNECTING SPACES WITHIN THE BUILDING BASED ON THEIR SPECIFIC NEEDS AND COMMONALITIES MAKES FOR A FUNCTIONAL, YET ELEGANT AND BEAUTIFUL EXPERIENCE.

The goal is to create a building ensemble that captures the unique energy and identity of Uptown through the power of the shared human experience.

The building becomes a living organism characterized by tempo and density. Uptown is comprised of many cultures that activate the neighborhood and the transit and entertainment hub draw people to the area with their own rhythms.

SITE Uptown Neighborhood, Chicago, IL

DURATION Fall 2012 Semester

inactive active

The site is ideal in many respects: it is on a major arterial street of Chicago (Broadway Avenue), it is located one block from the Lawrence CTA Redline Station, and most importantly it sits across the street from the Uptown Theater, Green Mill and the Aragon Entertainment Center.

Programmatically, the building is organized around a central atrium to allow for spill-out. Architecturally, this begins to manifest itself through expansion and contraction of spaces. Layered materiality is a technique used to facilitate spatial transitions. The perforated design of the exterior aluminum screen captures windows of activity and maintains varying levels of privacy.

Identity, flexibility and sustainability are the three critical factors addressed in the design of Pavement Boutique. The mission is to highlight the transient qualities of cities and the fashion world through flexible, sustainable construction. Pavement’s design incorporates the reuse of building materials such as scaffolding. The flexibility of the material allows for new and exciting customer experiences, as well as adapting easily to changing fashion trends.

SymbioCity creates sustainable solutions/programs for interconnected, urban communities. The headquarters are located in the LEED Platinum World Trade 7 Center in NYC.

Creating an interior ecosystem ...The office is dependent on both the physical environment (abiotic factor) and the workforce (biotic factor). Within the workforce are a series of communities that work together in a synergistic relationship much like the functional groups of an ecosystem. Harnessing natural energy and reusing waste will create a more efficient and sustainable workplace.

The study of ecology can be broken down into four studies: of the individual, of the population, of the community, and of the ecosystem.

Seats and table are suspended by taut wire which can extend or retract with the push of a button.

This feature allows for a flexible standing-height collaboration space. The table can be adjusted for various tasks and raised seating can also function as LED fixtures.

Circulation Connections

Supporting Offices

There are two main circulation paths throughout this office. The outer path circulates the exterior of the building, allowing for a direct connection to the outdoors and sunlight to enter the space. The inner path circulates the core of the workspace, moving from one office community to another.

Major office spaces are also evenly distributed throughout the office giving each department, functional group, their own area to work together.

Windstream pedal systems are attached to the base of each workstation and private office desk. Pedaling supplements additional electrical power to the office and promotes physical activity for employees. In this case - workers serve as the funtional groups of the ecosystem- working to produce energy for the building.
