April 2018 “Christ is Risen! He is Risen indeed!” Has it really been 40 days since we started our Lenten Journey? Has it real- ly been 40 days since we wore ashes on our foreheads and remembered that we are dust and to dust we shall return? Maybe you remember part of Kath- leen’s sermon from Ash Wednesday. She read from a poem written by Walter Brueggemann, entitled “Marked by Ash- es.” “We are able to ponder our ashness with some confidence Only because our every Wednesday of ashes anticipates your Easter Victory over that dry, flaky, taste of death. On this day we submit our ashen way to you— You Easter parade of newness Before the sun sets, take our Wednesday and Easter Us. Easter us to joy and energy and courage and freedom Easter us that we may be fearless for your truth Come here and Easter our Wednesday with mercy and justice and peace and generosity.” Easter Us! Is the message of our Easter Season at Lord of Life. You will receive a button with this printed on it on Easter Sunday. Wear it proudly! Wear it boldly! I like that it makes me think of Easter as a verb. God is doing for us. Yes! He has given us the Risen Jesus. I like thinking of Easter as a day of doing which leads to a week of doing then to a lifetime of doing. We are Easter People and Easter People do Easter in the example of God Eastering us. Easter us to strong faith and good deeds. Easter us to fearless proclama- tion of the Good News. Easter us to act justly. I like that when God Easters Us I think about God moving us to all that is new. “Your Easter Parade of newness.” We are new every morning. Easter us this day. God moves us to stronger faith. Has it really been 40 days since we started our Lenten Journey? Has it real-ly been 40 days since we wore ashes on our foreheads and remembered that we are dust and to dust we shall return? Maybe you remember part of Kath-leen’s sermon from Ash Wednesday. All men are welcome!

“The 5 Most Important Questions” For five Wednesdays in April and May (April 11 – May 9) you are invited to join Pastor Beyer and members of the Church Council explore “The 5 Most Important Ques-tions,” as part of our 2020 Vision process. The questions were developed by Peter Drucker as a self-assessment tool for businesses. We are applying them to our ministry and mission as a church. This is your opportunity to ask the BIG questions and strate-gize our long-range plan! Pastor Beyer will facilitate. Apr 11 What Is Our Mission? Apr 18 Who is Our Customer? Apr 25 What Does the Customer Value? May 2 What Are Our Results? May 9 What Is Our Plan?

“Money Talk$” May 16 and 23

This will be followed by two weeks on stewardship, tentatively titled: “Money Talk$.” Even though money is one of the least-popular topics in church it is one of the most common topics in the Bible and in the preaching of Jesus. We will talk frankly about our stewardship of money, the role of benevolence, leaving a legacy and our Mission Endowment Fund. Pastor Beyer will facilitate.

We will gather on Wednesday evenings from April 11 - May 2 to discuss topics related to Creation Justice. As we will only be meeting four times, there is of course only so much we will be able to cover on such a broad field, but it is my hope that we will be able to engage in some good discussion around this critical topic. I am by no means an expert, but I hope to present a few materials for us to use as springboards into our conversation together. Some of the materials we’ll be looking at include the ELCA’s Social Statement on Caring for Creation, articles from the Journal of Lutheran Ethics, and others. We’ll explore together the impact of sin on our rela-tionship with God, the rest of humanity, and the rest of Creation. We will also talk about the question, “Who is my neighbor?” Lastly, we will also talk about what gifts the Church has to bring to this discussion in terms of hope. Hope to see you there! Kathleen

Thoughts from our Intern Kathleen

Happy Easter Sea-son and Happy Spring to you! I’m grateful for the weeks during Lent that have led up to this time. It was wonderful to gather with you at church and to worship our Redeemer and to also learn about the many different places where the fac-es of Christ are revealed to us. Thank you to all of you who extended your hos-pitality during the Lenten studies, and thank you to all who made the delicious soup suppers possible. In these next few weeks we will be continuing to celebrate the Resurrection, although as Christians that seems like something we naturally should be rejoic-ing in all the time. Springtime always offers abundant reminders in nature of the promises of Easter. Growing up in the desert, I may not have had the expe-rience of witnessing snow melting away, but a quick drive out to the desert would reveal wildflowers in bloom and even blooms opening on cacti. The birds al-ways seemed to sing more spiritedly too. It’s hard to experience these without being overwhelmed by the sheer force of life breaking through. Rev. Randy Woodley talks about the entire Community of Creation which in-cludes all beings formed by our Creator. In these springtime moments it is hard to not be reminded of the truth that God loves ALL that he created. When we talk about loving our neighbor do we consid-er that perhaps our neighborliness might extend beyond other humans? How do we understand ourselves in relationship to our God, to each other, and to the rest of the Community of Creation? Begin-ning April 11 we will have an LOL Uni-versity class in which we will discuss topics related to Creation Justice. My hope is that we can begin to look togeth-er at some of the work being done in this area and learn from each other about how we see ourselves in this world that God so deeply loves. Peace, Kathleen

Thoughts from the President

AN INVITATION TO JOIN

THE 2020 TEAM

Many times we have heard that we really have three sepa-rate congregations all

under the Lord of Life Church umbrella. Though we have unique fea-tures at our Saturday 5:00 pm service, Sunday 8:30 am ser-vice and our Sunday 10:30 am service we are still one wor-shipping church family under that umbrella. At our Council retreat in February we identified that we could also be divided by age into three different groups.

1. First we have a large group who are fortunate to be in the 90 year old and over club! What a bless-ing to have them and to be able to learn and share from their wisdom. Let’s call them the Sen-ior Class.

2. Secondly, we have the majority of our membership who have been in our church family for a number of years. They are active and engaged in a variety of the studies, Circles and volunteer opportunities. Let’s call them the Junior and Sophomore Classes

3. Thirdly, we have the “young ones.” They have only been under that Lord of Life umbrella for a few years. They are the 38 new members received in Janu-ary and the 27 new members who just joined in March. They come to us with their views and talents which we need to tap into. Let’s call them the Fresh-man Class.

The question is how do we continue to grow and change and be meaningful

for each of these groups as we try to establish a forward think-ing vision for our church? This is the year of team work. The Council invites you to join the team in discussing this and other questions in five one-hour sessions during the LOL

University time slot beginning on Wednesday April 11 at 6:30 pm. We need members from the Senior, Junior, Sophomore and Freshman clas-ses to really make this a team effort. Are you willing to help out with this five week project? Here is the best part; there is no homework and no test!

SUMMER ADDRESS CHANGE

Did you know that it takes the envelope

company a minimum of 45 days to have your

address changed or your envelopes stopped? Giving us 45 days or more notice allows for your address change to be updated and your envelopes mailed to your summer address so you receive them in a timely manner. Also, if you stop your envelopes for the summer, we have time to avoid un-necessary print-ing and postage charges. Additionally, the date you plan to return to Arizona is just as important. Again, it requires 45 days advance notice to reverse the process so that you begin receiv-ing your giving envelopes upon your return to Arizona. So that the office can assist with the timely delivery of your envelopes to the address, please complete the information below as accurately as possible and give us as much information as possible. Incomplete depar-ture and return dates will cause envelope delivery to be interrupted. Please be assured, in the event your pre-printed envelopes have not reached you in time, you can al-ways use a white My Gift envelope or a blank enve-lope with your name and Giving # on it. Again, we as-sure you that your gift is recorded accurately even in the absence of pre-printed envelopes.

April Gratitude Gift is ELCA World Hunger

Each year Lord of Life generously sup-ports the ELCA World Hunger program through our Christmas Project: “Good Gifts.” Now members are invited to continue sup-port of the vital programs within the ELCA World Hunger ministry which continue throughout the year. More than 800 million people - that's 11 percent of people in our world today - are hungry. As members of the ELCA, we are called to respond. We are a church that rolls up our sleeves and gets to work. Working with and through our congregations, in the United States, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands Lutheran churches overseas and other part-

ners, ELCA World Hunger is uniquely positioned to reach commu-nities in need. From health clinics to microloans, water wells to ani-mal husbandry, community meals to advocacy, your gifts to ELCA World Hunger make it possible for the ELCA to respond, supporting sustainable solutions that get at the root causes of hunger and pov-erty. Hunger facts

815 million people around the world - that's more than 1 in 10 - can't access the food they need to live active, healthy lives.

According to the most recent estimates, 766.6 million people live in extreme poverty on less than $1.90 per day. That's 10.7% of the world's population.

At some point in 2016 (the most recent year available), more than 41.2 million people in the United States were unsure where their next meal might come from.

40.6 million Americans were living in poverty in 2016. For a family of four, this means their annual household income was below $24,563.

Men’s Book Club

Have you visited our Church Library recently?

We invite you to stop in the next time you are on the church campus. Unlike Motel 6, we do not leave the lights on, however, step in (light switch is to your right), browse and you will be pleasantly surprised to find… Fiction books (some in large print) Fiction audio books Biographies Documentary audios Children (movies and books) DVDs: Christian, documentaries, TV

series, and movies The Bible (a section on all aspects of

the Bible) Christian (books in this section by

many scholars) Many Biblical resource books Puzzles to check out and also to put

together in the library! Look for the Extra Books Box. In this box are extra copies of books currently shelved and are there free for the taking.

On April 11 we will focus our attention on “Bowling Alone” by Robert Putnam, an analysis of how the focus on commu-nity in the U.S. has erod-ed. He even looks at the decline in church attendance as one indicator. The church has purchased two copies of “Dreamland” and we will purchase copies of “The Quiet American” and “Bowling Alone.” These sessions have been lively and we have been able to discuss our differences of opinions; congratulations guys.

Easter Greetings from all in the Book Discussion Group.

All are welcome to come discuss the April’s selection, a historical fiction nov-el, “The Traitor’s Wife” by Allison Pataki on Monday, April 30 at 1:00 pm at church. A young lady’s maid is witness to Benedict Arnold and his wife’s treach-ery in this fictional account set during the American War for Independence. Those familiar with U.S. history may already know how Arnold’s saga unfurls, but the author’s interpretation of events offers a fresh perspective, plenty of intrigue and a host of interesting, multidimensional characters. I can’t wait to read this best-selling novel. I hope you can join us for what promises to be a good discussion. We meet once a month usually on the last Monday of the month at 1:00 pm at church to discuss a variety of books, some fiction, some nonfiction. All our selections can be found in the church library and local libraries and bookstores. We will meet in third Monday of May, on May 21, at 1:00 pm at church to dis-cuss “Etched in Sand” by Regina Cal-ceterra. We will meet on this Monday instead of the last Monday due to the Memorial Day holiday. All are welcome! Feel free to bring a friend. See you soon! Rita Boyd [email protected] 972-742-6532

Each Monday morning Caring and Sharing meets at 9:00 am. This is a chance to get to know others, share the concerns that you might have, give com-fort to others who are facing problems, and discuss topics of interest to the group.

I am so fortunate. I have a wonderful family. I have lived a good life. Oh yes, there have been those ups and downs, but the Lord and many of his angels have brought me to this day. I have a church, Lord of Life, which means so much to me in the later years of my life. Smiling faces, warm embraces, feeling Jesus close to me. How can I share the

love of Christ – AFTER I AM GONE? Lord of Life offers you a way. In 2006, the LORD OF LIFE MISSION ENDOWMENT FUND was created. The purpose for its creation and its operation is to be LITTLE CHRISTS TO OTHERS in our community. How interesting. You know, after caring for my family and other important matters, I think I may have some excess to share with others. But the question has been, HOW DO I DO THAT?. So often I see those who have not been as fortunate as me whom I would like to help. I would like to help those who want to be pastors. I want to help pro-grams for children that are not as lucky as me to know the love of Christ. THE LORD OF LIFE MISSION ENDOWMENT FUND is that vehicle to do these things for me today and after I am gone. It reaches outside of our congregation to pro-vide scholarships for seminary students, it reaches small churches such as Pan de Vida Lutheran Church sharing THE GOOD NEWS, Benevilla, Friends of SJF (Haiti), Lutheran Social Services and others that will share my love today and after I am gone. This fund began with seed money of $119,064. Through gifts from people asking “how can I share while I am alive and after I am gone?” The Fund has grown to more than $1,200,000. Annually, the fund provides support of over $100,000 each year. If our fund would grow to two or three million dollars in value, I could be a part of as much as $300,000 a year outreach sharing Christs Love. Please contact the Endowment Fund Committee if we can help you with the answer to your question.

Lord of Life Grief Sup-port Group meets Thursday at 1:30 pm. We will meet every Thursday except holi-

Ruth Lundeen

For me, the promise of New Life has always been the most meaningful and joyous thing about Easter. New Life in “the sweet by and by,” of course, but also New Life in the here and now, even as we travel through the third chapter of our lives. I was reminded of this wonder-ful truth in a special way when Jim and I took a little trip recently, to see the sights. Yes, but more importantly to visit our daughter in her workplace and to learn about what she and her company are doing. Susan is a senior officer of Unity Bio-technology, a start-up biotech that is doing some amazing research in their South San Francisco facility. Unity is seeking to develop drugs to deal with some age-associated diseases such as arthritis, vision loss and cognitive decline that tend to beset those of us in the third chapter of life. Backed by funding from investors such as Mayo Clinic Ventures and the venture fund of Amazon owner Jeff Bezos, Unity’s research is decep-tively simple. They seek to clear the body of senescent (aging) cells that are still alive, but that are not making any new tissue. Research has shown that such cells often congregate in areas that start to wear with aging, like the mind, the eyes and the joints. Of course, such research is still in its infancy stages and you and I will likely never be the recipients of the wonderful fruits companies like Unity hope to produce. But what an exciting kind of New Life the future may hold, if not for us, then quite likely for those who come this way after us. New Life, God’s great Easter prom-ise for the here and now, as it is brought to fruition through the efforts of women and men; using the gifts God has given them. New Life, God’s great Easter promise, making real the abundant life Jesus came to give to all; even to “old-timers” like you and me. Ruth

Light Beams

Can you see what I see?

Come to “Light Beams” on April 5 at 1:00 pm. This is a group for visually im-paired individuals. Dr. V. McCarthy will be the facilitator. She is from Barnet Dulaney Perkins Eye Center and will be bringing devices to assist in reading, driving and cooking. She will also share advice on how to use all the “new” tech-nology available.

Many of our members have and use Thrivent Financial Services. On Wednes-day, April 11 at 2:30 pm, we will have a brainstorming session on how we can use the Action Programs which are available to Thrivent members twice a year. There will also be information on the Choice Dollars Program. Find out how we, as individuals, can use these excel-lent options to benefit the most people for the greatest good.

A note from Feed My Starving Children

Organization

Dear Lord of Life Lutheran Church, Thank you for donating $8,641.28 to Feed My Starving Children on March 12 2018 at the Sun City West Event. Your gift has provided 39,278 nutritious meals to those who are desperate for food. Thank you for handing hope to them in Jesus’ name. The food funded through your dona-tion provides a critical foundation for a child. It is the first step toward a hope-filled life for them and their families. They rely on you to provide MannaPack meals so they can focus on becoming self-reliant. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for hearing their cries and be-ing a beacon of hope to God’s kids. God bless you for feeding so many starving children. Mark Crea Executive Director/CEO (Our meals went to the Philippian Is-lands)

We have two service projects coming up, one on April 10 and one on May 1. We have established Thrivent Action Teams to support our efforts. Each of these events will start at 4:30 pm. We will talk about the purpose of the project, have a light dinner, and work on the projects. We will have tickets for $3.00 for each event, this will help us to plan how many we will serve. On Tuesday April 10 at 4:30 pm we will be assembling School Kits for Lutheran World Relief. Everyone is welcome to help. We estimate that each school kit has about $8.00 in supplies. We have put a box in the Narthex to collect the supplies. Please bring school supplies or a donation, everything will go to Lutheran World Relief. We need the following new items for each kit: Four 70-sheet notebooks of wide- or college-ruled paper, approximately 8” x 10 ½”,

no loose leaf paper One 30-centimeter ruler, or a ruler with centimeters on one side and inches on the

other One pencil sharpener One pair of blunt scissors (safety scissors with embedded steel blades work well) Five unsharpened #2 pencils with erasers; secure together with a rubber band Five black or blue ballpoint pens (no gel ink) One box of 16 or 24 crayons One 2 ½” eraser

On Tuesday May 1 at 4:30 pm we will be working on Days For Girls kits as our service project. These kits are distributed to countries where feminine care products are not available or affordable. When they don’t have products they have to stay home from school. A kit includes two wash cloths, a bar of soap, 2 pairs of underwear, 2 shields, and 8 liners. We will be making the shields and liners. If you have a serger please bring it with dark thread in it. We need: Fabric – cotton or flannel prewash, darker colors, no animals or symbols Gallon size Ziploc bags (non-slider) Wash cloths (new cheap ones are more absorbent) 100% cotton briefs adult sizes Bar soap – small

I hope you can join us, I know many of you will be traveling this month or the next, may the Lord bless you and keep you safe as you journey.

Saturday Nite Life! Saturday Nite Life will be April 7 at 6:15 pm with entertainment by the Lord of Life Big Band. There was a very large audience for the Big Band at their con-cert in March and now we have another opportunity to hear more of their great music. Yes, they still have some great new “oldies” that you’re sure to enjoy. Menu for the evening will be garden salad, parmesan/panko crusted chicken, smashed red potatoes and apple des-sert. Cost is $10.00 and tickets are avail-able around worship services or through the church office.

LOL

April is the time of year we say good-bye to many of our winter visitors. Once again, it’s been a joy to have you in our midst and you have added SO MUCH! We wish you a wonderful summer, safe-ty, good health and hope that you’ll soon be back.

LOL Concert Series We have completed our 2017-18 Concert Series and want to thank you for coming to many of the excellent pro-grams. We’re building the 2018-19 se-ries now and by this fall, we’ll announce the new season.

One of the continuing concerns of churches is finding organists for the future. The CAZAGO, Central Arizona American Guild of Organists, is hosting a Pipe Organ Encounter, POE, for young people 14 through 18 years of age. We are expecting 30 young peo-ple from around the country, some of whom have had a little experience with organ and some with only piano in their growing years. At Lord of Life we will have one or two young people tak-ing lessons each morning and a time to practice, on our Glat-ter-Götz organ and the Wicks organ (in the Chapel). The teachers are ASU graduate students working on their doctor-

ates in organ as well as people within our Phoenix community. This event happens June 17-22. The POE committee needs a number of volunteers to help with supervision, driving, coordinating, chaperoning, etc. More information will be in the May/June' Life-lines. Gloria Lien is on this committee, so if you'd like to help, please talk to her.
