This was shot with a Nikon D500, f/10, ISO 100, focal length 57. After many bribes, and many, many blurred shots, I was successful in getting my grandson to hold still long enough to take this shot. It got to the point that he would ask, "Are we taking pictures today?", every time he came over to visit. We did many silly actions to get him to display his natural smile. Since he doesn't get to "play" with guns, he was excited to put the rifle in his hands. It is both fun and challenging trying to photograph children. t

Greetings, Nevada Camera Club! February was a good month for the club. Thanks to the volunteers who set up the Annual Print Competition display at the Lloyd D. George Federal Courthouse. If you haven’t gone to the courthouse to see the display I encourage you to do so. The display will be up until April 24. Terrell Neasley gave a fantastic presentation and our monthly print competition was terrific. In addition to club related activities, WPPI was in town. I hope everyone was able to attend either the full conference or just a day or two at the expo. Even though I only attended the expo, I was inspired by the images on display.
Now that March has arrived, here is an early reminder that Daylight Saving Time starts on March 12 so don’t forget to set your clocks forward the night before. Spring is just a few weeks away and hopefully another good year for desert wild flowers. Rick Holmes will be preparing us how to get that perfect shot in a free workshop on March 4th at his house. For more information on that class, see Rick’s article on page 4.
I am excited about our first awarding of prizes to two photography students at the College of Southern Nevada. 2017 NCC Photography Awards will go to one “Beginning” student, and one “Advanced” student. CSN photography department faculty will select the top three photographers for each award. Three NCC judges will determine the winners. The winners will be announced at CSN Photo Fest on Wednesday, April 12 and they will present their work to the NCC at the May 12 program meeting at which we will present their awards to them. If you would like to judge this competition, please let me know. t

Monthly Print Competition by Juliana Stratton, MNCC
Thirty-two members entered 88 images in 43 unique categories in the February 2017 Print Competition. Thirty-three blue ribbons were awarded and seven images earned a perfect score of 27 points. The Cub Challenge “Abandoned” seemed to be an exciting challenge. There were a plethora of old autos and buildings. Some other unique images also fit the challenge. Well done everyone!
Congratulations to the “27” point perfect score winners:
Mike Braunstein Where’s Dory?
Tim Gonick Steam Engine
Jim Sage King of the Jungle
Sue Stevens Yum
Michael Stratton Where’s My Horse?
Doug Walsh High, Going Low
Garrett Winslow Intensity
Thank you for getting your images entered by 6:45 PM. It is easier to have the prints ready for judging when everyone submits on time. Remember there is a color code used for your paper forms as follows: pink for beginners, white for intermediate, yellow for advanced, and blue for masters. You can print on a corresponding colored paper from the NCC website; click on competition, and then print competition fill in form. While this is not mandatory, it makes it easier to read and ultimately easier for you to print and then attach. Generally speaking a white or black mat best enhances your photo. The choice, however, is essentially yours. One more reminder. If you enter three images in a monthly competition, one MUST be in the Club Challenge category.
Speaking of Club Challenge, the theme for March is Silhouette. Deadline to enter the March Electronic Image Competition is 11:59 PM on the 20th of March.

How To Photograph Spring Flowers Workshop by Rick Holmes, DNCC
Programs by Toby Power, FNCC
Field Trips by Karla Jordan
Our March 10th program will feature Nevada Camera Club member Allan Duff speaking on his two favorite photo adventures. Allan tells us that “Puerto Rico is one of my favorite places to explore with a camera. The old Spanish forts, amazing cemeteries, brightly colored architecture, white sand beaches and wildlife are all amazing subjects. Second, and totally different, the surfing competition called Pipe Masters on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii. This is the best place in the world to photograph big wave surfing competitions from the beach. Pipeline beach gets huge waves in December and January of each year, and the waves break close to shore. So, photographing the best surfers in the world from the beach with a moderate telephoto is simple and really exciting.”
Allan is a Senior Vice President with the financial firm of Morgan Stanley where he has worked for 37 years, but is a photographer by passion. His father was an avid photographer and Allan has enjoyed photography since he was a child. He has changed with the technology of photography and over the years and has transitioned from film and darkrooms, to completely digital today. Allan grew up in Southern California and has lived in Las Vegas with his family for 37 years. He has 4 married children and 14 grandchildren. Allan served as President of the Nevada Camera Club for 2 years and as Program Chair for 4 years. He loves all types of photography and describes his passion for photography as an “Addiction to the Click”. His favorite subjects are landscapes, nature, wildlife and action sports.
Our February speaker, Terrell Neasley, ended his program by listing his Top 10 reminders which he has been good enough to share with us for publication.
Terrell’s Top Ten to Get Better at Photography
1. Pull out your manual
2. Go shoot -- Find out what you like to shoot then shoot something else
3.Test you camera’s limitations -- ISO limits, Autofocus limits, Dynamic Range limits
4. Play with Flash and Long Exposure photography -- Sync Speed/High Speed Sync, Rear Curtain Sync, Off Camera Flash, Landscape using the moon for illumination
5. Go look at a lot of photos in your genre of photography -- 500px, Tumblr pages, Instagram
6. Change perspectives -- Different focal lengths such as wide-angle or tilt-shift lenses, Use QUALITY Circular Polarizers or Neutral Density Filters, Shoot from a lower angle closer to ground, Travel to a new place to shoot, Try a different camera system. Rent from B&C Camera or LensRentals.com
7. Limit yourself to 36 images only from time to time
8. Be more informed. Do classes, attend conventions and workshops, Join PPA, Regularly visit blogs and podcasts
9. Experiment with new things – Implement elements of photography like shape, patterns, negative space, motion, silhouettes, or creative lighting techniques
10. Commit. Commit to yourself – Be serious. Don’t cheat yourself. Commit to the Photography Industry and Trade – Don’t operate in a fashion that hurts other photographers or the business of photography.
Bonus Tip! PRINT YOUR WORK! t
We had a great time at The Lights Festival and at the Valley of Fire field trips this weekend, thank you to all the members who attended!
Our field trip in March will be for an evening of light painting at El Dorado Canyon on Saturday, March 18, 4:30-8:00 PM or so. We need to limit the number to 15 people, it will be first come, first serve. We will be there approximately 3-4 hours. The cost is $20 per member, paid to El Dorado
Canyon when we arrive at the field trip. This is less than half of the $10 per hour fee the owner usually charges.
We’ll have a short briefing of safety education from the owner in the general store, settle-up and be on our way. We’ll have an hour of free time to shoot before we start our light painting session. Jim Sage will be our light painting instructor for those of you not familiar with the techniques or those wanting to brush up on their skills. I’ll send more specific details via email for equipment needed when I hear from those wanting to attend. Please email me at: [email protected] by March 7 if you would like to attend this field trip.
We will be having additional evening field trips to El Dorado Canyon so everyone who wants to go will have a chance to attend, if not in March then in the upcoming months. t
We are quickly approaching spring bloom time in the desert. We may be blessed with lots of wildflowers to photograph this year.
Have the competition judges ever said that you are using the wrong time of day or that you need to diffuse and bounce to get better flower photos when shooting in direct sunlight? I’ll show you how to impress these judges. With a couple of basic tools you can control and enhance the lighting of your flowers.
At noon on Saturday, March 4, 2017 I will present a one-to-two hour free workshop on how to get the most out of the spring flowers. The workshop will be held at my house, 2000 Pinto Rd, Henderson, NV 89002. 702.458.4933. Major cross streets are Wagon Wheel and Boulder Hwy in southeast Henderson.
You should bring your camera. If you have a tripod, bring it. If you have a remote way to trigger your camera’s shutter, bring it. Of course, bring an empty memory card and a full battery for your camera.
I will first discuss and demonstrate the technique used. Then attendees will practice the technique. A handout will be provided that will list the few supplemental items you will want to acquire to help get great wildflower pictures.
The workshop will be held in clear or inclement weather.
Please send an email to [email protected] if you will attend. If sufficient interest is shown for a different day and time, we can schedule a replay workshop. Let me know. t

From the Vice-President by Garrett Winslow, MNCC
Recently the WPPI held their annual convention in our backyard. This is not new information as the convention has been based here in Las Vegas for many years. However, even though I’ve attended this convention many times, this year was the first year I actually attended the convention in a proper manner. I was involved. Every year prior to this I went to the trade show and attended a few classes, like many of you probably do, but this year I was involved. To say this involvement was minor would be a severe understatement. My attendance this year changed my life, and I sincerely hope to motivate all of you to change yours.
From the very opening meeting the day before the judging, I was totally swept away. To witness Jerry Ghionis speaking before the most famous and talented photographers in the world was eye opening. Every single person in the room was engrossed, engaged, and listening to Jerry. Sue Bryce, Lindsay Adler, Joe Bussink, Peter Hurley, Bambi Cantrell, Dixie Dixon, Matthew Jordan Smith, Tamara Lackey, David Edmonson… The list goes on.
The topic of Jerry’s presentation? Respect. Respect for our art, respect for one another, and respect for the integrity and judging of the greatest photographic competition in the world. The key element in his speech and guidance on respect, was the respect each photographer in the room had for one another. There were no egos. There was only camaraderie. There was no one above another, only a helping hand to lift each other up. It was magical. I’ve never been in the presence of such greatness, or so much love for one another, in the pursuit of my art. I dearly loved being there. I felt like I was home, warm and safe from the negativity of our world, and surrounded by a supportive loving environment of creativity, and human kindness. I never wanted the evening to end, and the entire rest of the week long convention, was exactly the same.
Won’t you all join me, enhancing this very same environment within the Nevada Camera Club?
Thank you all for being here, and thanks for reading. t

Education by Garrett Winslow, MNCC
We say a hearty welcome to the two new members who joined us in January! We look forward to seeing you at the monthly program meetings and to seeing your images in the monthly competitions. If you have any questions, call me, the membership chairperson, or another board member. Our numbers are on the last page of this newsletter. Also, watch the calendar for new member orientations and beginners special interest group meetings.
New members:
#2225 Sharon Gales Has joined as an Intermediate. She is interested in landscape and nature.
#2226 Johnathan Mitchell is joining as a junior and heard about us from Kelly Jones. t
This months education column is best called “Back Up or You’re Dead!” In this case “dead” means dead in the water. I’ll explain. Many of you are aware that I said I did not wish to upgrade with Adobe to their cloud based operation, over simply having the programs loaded on my computer. Well recently, being dragged kicking and screaming, I elected to be part of the Creative Cloud. So far this upgrade has been not so bad, and yet horrible.
I remember, back in the day, being dragged kicking and screaming into digital based photography from film. At the time, I thought life as I knew it was dead, and actually it was. The transition from film to digital based work was traumatic. However, now days, I would never go back to film. It’s too limiting. And my work has vastly improved with digital over film because my darkroom is far less expensive and vastly more creative.
The transition from a loaded program to one that is cloud based and updated often, has also been a huge transition for me. Please remember, I’m a photographer for a living, over being a hobbyist. Changing my operation can greatly affect my final output and therefore my lively hood. During this upgrade I learned this in spades! Bottom line? All of us are aware of backing up our imagery. At least by now you should be! Did you ever think about backing up your Photoshop brushes? Or your Photoshop actions? I personally have over 2,000 Photoshop brushes and a ton of actions. Learn from my mistake, my friends, because when I upgraded to the Creative Cloud, all my brushes were gone! So were the actions! Aghhh!
I had to totally rebuild those files. Many of those brushes and actions I use in my daily digital darkroom. I was dead in the water, and also now under the gun to get those files back so I could complete work. As far as the Cloud goes? So far I’m happy. I have some updates to look through. I do not automatically update anything. There’s always bugs to be solved. Overall, as a professional photographer is necessary for me to stay at the top of my game or get run over by others.
The options available in the Creative Cloud are worth the upgrade. By the way, no, I don’t place my images in that cloud. That can be a disaster on many, many levels. This alone could be a topic for a future article.
As always, thanks for reading! t
