  • From the Desk of Fr. Underwood:

Strong Marriage = Strong Family: With the hectic schedules of family life, I often hear people say that they feel selfish taking time as a married couple to go on a date. They feel like they are robbing their children of time. Remember, your marriage must be strongfor your children. Do something to nourish your marriage. Sign up for Six Dates for Catholic Couples, beginning

March 21st. There is even babysitting.

RCIA Intensifies Efforts: This weekend, at the 9:30am Mass we begin the three week period of the Scrutinies. Reflecting on three particular stories of conversion, the Church shows us how Jesus touched lives and transformed hearts. This weekend, at the well, the Samaritan woman met Jesus, had an extremely meaningful encounter with Him, and her life was forever changed. Leaving her bucket behind, we see how she left her past sins behind for a new life in Christ. We also see a woman who was hurt, abused, and mistreated by others. We are reminded that our personal sins leave marks, but so do the sins from others. Jesus has come to heal them both. Let us pray for each other that these wounds in our lives may be

    transformed by Jesus!

Why did 9:30 Mass have different readings? I mentioned that the RCIA Scrutinies have special readings, but the regular reading cycle of the Church offers us a three-year cycle of beautiful readings. What a rich blessing we have to experience the Year B readings as well this year. In the Gospel for Year B, Jesus purified the Temple by driving out those who were making it a place for people to be taken advantage of (a marketplace). He was saddened that attention was being taken off of Godin Gods house. This was an opportunity to redirect people to God and reveal that He is Gods Son, who would be struck down but rebuilt

    after three days.

How would Jesus respond to us in His house (the church building)? Do we honor it? Do we respect it as a House of Prayer? Do we bring to Christ our worries and ask for him to drive away our sins? This Lent, we reflect on the Scriptures asking God What do you want me to do in order to

    grow in holiness?

March 15 Men of Madness Dont miss this exciting fast-paced faith-packed day called Men of Madness. There is no mistake it is in

Marchand the only mistake would be not attending.

Based on the Book of Wisdom: This is the man whom we once held in derision and made a byword of reproachwe fools! We thought that his

life was madness and that his end was without honor. (Wisdom 5:4)

RCIA: Period of Purification and Enlightenment This final period of preparation is one of intense, spiritual recollection that usually coincides with Lent. It is a period of Purification and Enlightenment. It is a time for reflection and prayer, more than teaching. We will celebrate several rites, giving the candidates strength and grace. March 1st we celebrated the Rite of Sending at the 9:30am Mass and a Combined Rite of Election and the Call to Continuing Conversion at the Cathedral. After this Rite the Catechumens are now called The Elect. The three purifying rituals, known as The Scrutinies, strengthen the elect and help to complete their conversion. The Presentation of the Creed and The Lords Prayer enlighten the minds of the elect in the final weeks of their preparation for the Sacraments of Initiation, which will be celebrated at the Easter Vigil. Lent ends when the sacred Triduum begins (Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter) at sunset on Thursday of Holy Week. Please keep The Catechumens and The Candidates in your prayers as they journey to the Easter Vigil, where they will become members of our parish. Inquiry is meeting the second and fourth Sunday of each month. If you are interested in attending an inquiry session please call the Parish Office at 742-2107 or Jim at 447-2939.

Q: Why dont people smile very much at Mass?

A: We dont always smile when we are praying and thats okay!

Our emotional response to things should always be appropriate for the occasion. There are times that it is appropriate to smile and times that it is appropriate to show sadness. Likewise there are times during Mass that one or the other can be our response. There are times when something in Scripture or the homily may elicit a smile because of something humorous.

We dont always smile even when we are really happy. Think of things that you do, that make you happy but dont elicit a smile. I like to shovel snow as a good form of exercise, but I dont smile while Im shoveling. I love prayer and sometimes I meditate on sad things like Jesus suffering.

We have to understand what the Mass is. It is a meal and a celebration, but it is also the holy sacrifice of Jesus Christ. The paschal mystery is re-presented to us at Mass. If we were transported to the moment when Jesus died, we would be sad, but also in awe at the depth of Jesus love that he would willing suffer and die for us. We hold this truth in conjunction with our understanding that he also rose from the dead! If we truly understand this deep mystery we will show it in our demeanor at Mass.

There is a phrase in Latin to express this, lex orandi lex credendi. It means that the way we worship reflects what we believe and how we act. Mass is a solemn encounter with almighty God when we are raised up to the heights of heaven and come in contact with Him. This should humble us and give us joy at the same time.
