From Dale’s Desk Prayers of Mourning, Words of Hope

I did not recognize the language, but I recognized the pathos in their song as six voices from St. Paul’s Parish of the Holy Apostolic, Catholic, Assyrian Church of the East mourned the pain and suffering of their sisters and brothers in the Middle East. Such was the beginning of the Ecumenical Prayer Service in Solidarity with Persecuted Christians hosted by the Catholic Diocese of Orange held at Christ Cathedral in Garden Grove, California. Their song was the music for the procession in which I walked. And it was then that I knew that I was witnessing something beyond my experience and utterly holy. The event this Tuesday evening was well attended. The main floor of the Arboretum was filled to capacity and the balcony was filled with people standing in the aisles. More than that, I have not experienced such a gathering of Protestant, Catholic and Orthodox Church leaders. The seven bishops present included were two bishops from the Coptic Orthodox Church and two bishops from the Catholic Assyrian Church of the East. Their presence served as a poignant reminder of the martyrdom of 21 Coptic Christians executed by ISIS and what was reported as 375 Assyrian Christians who have been kidnapped by ISIS. Together we mourned. Together we remembered the courage and faithfulness of Christians around the world who are persecuted for their faith. Together we heard the words of hope that come to us from scripture. Together we heard proclaimed that evil does not have the final word. Together we heard proclaimed that God and God’s love is more powerful than the deepest sin. But most striking of all, we heard prayers for the end of violence and prayers of concern for those whose violence in the name of God perverts both the tenets of Christianity and Islam. One particular prayer stood out to me. I choose to share part of that prayer with you this week. I pray that it will be as much of a blessing to you as it was to me and to all who prayed it together Tuesday evening. “Heavenly Father, receive this prayer lifted up to You with tears and heavy hearts. We weep for the many brothers and sisters who have lost their homes, land and even lives because they are Your children. We weep because Your holy Name is used as a reason for violence and murder. We weep because the powers of the world seem unable or unwilling to stop the massacre of innocent men, women and children. Heavenly Father, we place before Your throne the many Christians who have died for the faith and especially the 21 sons of the Church who bravely gave witness to Your Son Jesus Christ. May their prayers and ours end the violence that falls upon us. May our enemies be converted, their hearts unburdened by their sins, and may they too come to know you and Your mercy . . . . Amen.” Blessings, "Two Rows by the Sea"

Two rows of men walked along the shore of the seas. On a day when the world's tears would run free,

One row of assassins, who thought they did right, The other of innocents, true sons of the light... "The Bible Society of Egypt"

One row spewed wretched, contemptible threats,

The other spread God-given peace and rest.

A question: Who fears the other? The row in orange, watching paradise open?

Or the row in black, with minds evil and broken.

Special Fund To Help Families/Individuals In Need Most of you are aware that we have a special fund known as the Pastor’s Discretionary Fund. These funds are used at the discretion of the Pastor to help individuals and families from time to time. The existence of this fund depends upon gifts that come in from time to time from members and friends of the congregation. At present the fund has been depleted. Gifts in any amount to increase the resources in this fund will be appreciated. Make a check, payable to the church and write “Pastor’s Discretionary Fund” on the memo line. Dirk McCuen will now be joining Tom Beck, Clare Keech, David and Amy Styffe and Craig Wallace. Senior Adults To Host Worship Service For Alzheimer’s Patients As they have done for many years, our Sr. Adult Ministry will again host and lead a worship service for Alzheimer’s patients who reside in various care facilities around Orange County. This year the service will be Wednesday, March 11. It will begin at 10 A.M. in our sanctuary and conclude by 10:30 A.M. The service will be followed by the serving of refreshments to our guests in Chapman Lounge. This reception is being coordinated by Jan Farley and Mary Brill. The theme of the worship service we've planned for next Wednesday is “On Being Named.” The service will feature a brief reading with that title, followed by a reflection by Dale Suggs, our Interim Pastor, on Isaiah 43:1-3a in which God declares: “I have called you by name.” The readers in order of the lines they will read are Mike Vaughan, Donna Woodbridge, Mariette Linberg and Ed Linberg. The scripture lesson will be read by Gordon Fenters. Laura Lee Wiggins will lead the Call to Worship, with Barbara Fenters offering the Invocation and Ginny King offering the Benediction. Pa Vannoy will be offering the Prayer of Thanksgiving for Communion with Scott Brill and Rod Farley coordinating the serving of communion. The hymns we’ll sing will be accompanied by Nancy Geiger. The participants in this service will have a brief run through of the service at 9:30 A.M. This will allow all of them ample time to help with the welcoming and seating of our guests who will arrive in large vans from their respective Care Centers throughout the County. Members of the Alzheimer’s Association of Orange County will also be on hand to help us welcome and seat our guests. If you’d like to participate in this service as one of our group that welcomes our guests, please be present by 9:30 A.M. next Wednesday. If you’d like to work with Scott and Rod in serving communion, a task we’d like to have two more people doing, call Scott Brill to volunteer. If 714you like to help serve refreshments to our guests and/or provide some of the

refreshments, contact Jan Farley to let her know of your interest in helping and what you will bring. Two special participants in this activity, who will be helping to welcome our guests, are Nanc Stevens with her service dog, Brutus, and John Cairns with his service dog, Donald Since we now have the attention of our Senior Adults with the foregoing paragraphs, here is an additional note: Our regular meeting for the month of March is set for Tuesday, March 17 at Noon. We will enjoy what promises to be an outstanding musical program featuring Alexandria Schammel, a Senior at Whittier College who is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree in Vocal Performance. Put this date in your calendar and plan to join our Sr. Adult Ministry for its March meeting.

Listening to the Churches:

"IT'S WORKING FOR US!" Sunday March 22 11:45-12:45

Our Discipleship and Outreach Ministry Teams are hosting a light lunch and receiving guests from other churches after church on Sunday March 22. We will have an opportunity to: -- Hear "success stories" about what's really working in three other churches in their outreach to our community -- Discover we don't have to do it alone but can learn from one another and not duplicate each other's volunteer efforts -- Hear how other members' volunteer time is making a difference in and around Fullerton -- Become more aware of the Fullerton collaborative movement, AC T (Advocating Community Transformation) by hearing from one of its inspiring leaders Please plan ahead to remain and eat at church with your family, friends, or lunch group Sunday March 22!

“present your bodies as a living sacrifice… be transformed by the renewing of your minds…discern what is the will of God…” [Romans 12.1-2a] How can you tell if you’re a member of the Christian Church

(Disciples of Christ) [CCDOC]? As I was moving my library to the Disciples Seminary Foundation, a little book fell out of a box entitled “You Might be a Disciple if…” It was arranged and edited by David P. Polk, the first editor for Chalice Press. It was published as a way of raising funds for Week of Compassion. One of the collected sayings was “You might be a Disciple if you show up for a Bible study without one.” We Disciples used to be known as “the People of the Book.” We even took our Bibles to church where we expected to be asked to look up various Bible passages during the course of the sermon. We had a saying “No book but the Bible.” Disciples ministers most always included translations of important words from the original Greek text. Since our churches decided to have pew Bibles, it has been convenient for us to leave our Bibles at home. Preachers can now show scriptural passages on a screen. We don’t need to look it up. And since few of us attend a Sunday School class where we need our own Bibles, we have stopped bringing our Bibles to church altogether. At some of our Disciples ministers’ meetings and conferences, the speaker knows that saying, “Now, please turn in your Bibles to…” is usually good for a laugh. Pastor Dale has been crafting his sermons in ways that draw us back to Bible texts. His sermon presentations show a great deal of preparation that involves delving deeply into the text. If you enjoy this kind of preaching, you might want to mention this quality to a member of the minister search committee. His sermons have prompted me to revisit passages of scripture when I get home. Every Sunday, the artistry of Disciples preaching is on display at First Christian Church, Fullerton. You might even want to bring your own Bible to worship. I hope God leads you to worship on Sunday. See you in church! In love, Bob Hasty, Worship Team Chair
