Willie & Company is coming to Llano Grande on Friday, Mar. 11. Willie is not just a character; he is a personality unto himself and most definitely the star of the show. Just ask him. With the face of a 5-year-old and the mind of a lad not much older, Willie loves the ladies, torments the men, and steals the hearts of both.

Willie can be a smart aleck but deep down he is a totally sincere young man whose attributes include his tremendous wit, and his ability to get the audience involved in the show. Willie’s singing, wisecracking and comical antics are his alone and that’s why he is the star. He is almost convinced he can do the show alone, an attitude that represents ventrilo-

quism at its very finest. Some of Willie’s family will share the

spotlight with him. Willie has a great-great Granny Gardner, a real charmer with folks from her generation, who is a good ol’ gal with more than a spark left in her. Then there’s his little cousin Hannah, the “wanna-be star” who is a delight and a big favorite with the audiences.

Although Peggy Miller’s name is ab-sent from Willie & Company, her voice carries the show. Peggy, a truly extraordi-nary ventriloquist, has the ability to make her audience almost forget that she is the actual voice behind Willie & Company. This renown ventriloquist has been enter-taining people worldwide for more than two decades in locations as diverse as Germany, England and the US Supreme Court. Her shows are quite unique and are tailored to the audience she is enter-taining.

Tickets for this show can be purchased at Llano Grande Activities Office or at the door. To order tickets by phone, call (956) 565-2228. The cost is $10.

Llano Grande is located at 2215 East West Blvd (South of Bus. 83), in Mer-cedes. The show begins at 7 p.m. Doors open at 6 p.m.

Three well-known performers in the Rio Grande Valley will be doing a show called Golden Oldies that features songs of the 1950s and 1960s. This year, the show will star John Sager, Susan Hudson Carman and Greg Jones.

The shows will take place Sunday, Mar. 6 at 2 p.m. at Mission Bell 1711 Bus. 83 (605-610-6114); Tuesday, Mar. 8 at 2 p.m. at Park Place, 5401 Bus 83, Harlin-gen (956-412-0375); and Saturday, Mar. 12 at 2 p.m. at Palm Shadows, 200 N. Val Verde Road, Donna, (956-464-3326). Tickets are $12. Call the parks for tickets.

John Sager is one of the most popular performers in the Rio Grande Valley. He has been voted Male Vocalist of the Year in the Valley Star Awards three times and Entertainer of the Year twice.

John began showing his musical tal-ents with piano lessons at age 9. In high school he was in the choir where he was named best male vocalist. Later, he began singing for weddings and funerals. When a sister asked him to enter a singing con-test to help battered women, he placed in

the top ten of 100 contestants. In 2003, he won the Toledo Idol contest.

In 2009, he moved to Branson and went to work at Mel’s Hard Luck Diner. He was voted Best Male Vocalist and Best Gospel CD by Branson Show Awards in 2011 and 2012.

In addition to the Golden Oldies Shows John can be seen Mar. 3 at Victoria Palms Ladies’ Night; Mar. 5 at Restful Valley Ranch, Mission; Mar. 8, Trails End; Mar. 9, Ladies Luncheon, Casa Del Sol; and Mar. 12, McAllen Mobile Park. All shows are at 7 p.m. unless otherwise noted.

Susan Hudson Carman started singing at the age of three in a family show called Country Song Round–up in Memphis, Tennessee. Susan has traveled the world singing in countries such as England, Scotland, Germany and The Netherlands. She performed with the USA in Green-land, Canada and in the United States en-tertaining troops.

Male Vocalist of the Year Bill Chrastil captivates audiences

Celebrating Texas Independence March 11-12

By Kathy OlivarezBill Chrastil, of Lincoln, Nebraska,

has been performing for Winter Texans for three years. His efforts have paid off because Winter Texans voted him 2016 Male Vocalist of the Year. A beautiful voice and a high-energy show that leaves the viewer exhausted from just watching him as he jumps, dances across the stage, gives high kicks and does splits while singing the songs of popular male vocal-ists.

Bill has been entertaining audiences for over 30 years as a musician, singer and songwriter. He has performed in Branson, where he has received numerous awards including Best Gospel CD of the Year, Best Voice Impressionist, and Best Hori-

zon Show of the Year, He is a member of the Nebraska and South Dakota Country Music Hall of Fame and a member of the Nashville Songwriters Association.

This reporter attended one of his shows recently, where he started his show with songs from Johnny Cash, such as “Ring of Fire” and “Folsom Prison Blues.” Then he moved on to the popular songs from the past like “Achy Breaky Heart” mov-ing around the stage in constant motion as he performs.

Slowing down a moment with Willie Nelson’s “Blue Eyes Cryin’ in the Rain” and “On the Road Again,” he continued with Conway Twitty’s “Hello Darling” and “Tight Fittin’ Jeans.” Next came Neil Diamond’s “Coming to America” and a Bruce Springstein song sung in the voice of Elmer Fudd.

Add “Sweet Caroline” and Roy Or-bison’s “Pretty Woman,” and other old favorites for a lively show. He did a guitar instrumental that was totally exceptional; I didn’t realize fingers could move that fast. All during the show Bill involves the audience by having them clapping in rhythm or singing parts of the songs with him. And that is just the first half!

In the second half he came back as El-vis wearing a white costume with bead-ed fringe down the front. His dark hair was styled to resemble Elvis in younger years. He started with romantic songs like “Teddy Bear” and “Can’t Help Falling In Love” before moving to the livelier songs like “Heartbreak Hotel,” and “All Shook Up.” During his performance as Elvis he went out into the audience and selected a woman, and getting down on one knee, he sang to her. Afterwards, he placed an au-tographed scarf around her neck. Some-

Magnolia Park collects aluminum cans and sells them to purchase cookies for the bingo games. They men went through the cans and selected the beer cans. It took 650 cans with a scrap value of $8.11 to assemble the buggy.

The men paid the value of the cans they used back into the cookie fund so the bingo players will still have their cookies. The majority of the beer was consumed

by “hearty volunteers around the park” that may not have known they were con-tributing to the project.

The car will be unveiled at the Magno-lia RV Park craft show on Sunday, Mar. 6. Ron Pierce, who works in the activity di-rector’s office, said everyone is invited to attend to see the car. It will be on display in the recreation hall.

Meanwhile, the four men are already scheming to build something bigger and better next year. Can’t wait to see what that will be!

By Kathy OlivarezWhile there are many dances and many

entertainment shows Bob and Mary Wat-son of Otsego, Minnesota are working to bring theatrical performances to Winter Texan parks in the Pharr area with the hope they will also spread to other parks in the Valley. Lovers of theater, Bob and Mary feel it is important to provide anoth-er form of entertainment for Winter Tex-ans who might be looking for a different type of entertainment.

“We think adding theatrical produc-tions to the types of entertainment offered to Winter Texans in the Rio Grande Valley would enhance life in the parks and pos-sible attract younger people who love the-ater to spend some time in the Rio Grande Valley,” said Bob.

While neither Bob nor Mary is fully retired, they are able to spend five months in the Rio Grande Valley each year. Bob is a CPA who is able to work from the Val-ley via computer. Mary has a job teaching medical professional how to work in crit-ical care situations when she goes home. While they are in the Valley they love the entertainment provided by the parks. They attended as many as 43 during the 2015 season.

The Watsons have gotten to know many of the entertainers. They convinced Bill Chrastil to take part in the recent Elvis Festival at Little Graceland where they work as volunteers. He was a great success at the festival.

They also stay active by volunteering at Hidalgo Festival of Lights, BorderFest, the Elvis Festival and with the Pharr Com-munity Theater. Since they enjoy theater so much, they feel many other Winter Texans might also enjoy the opportunity to see a play if they could be brought to the parks where they live. They have vol-unteered their time with the Pharr Com-munity Theater that does performances several times a season. But the theater is quite small and only holds about 40 peo-ple. Many locals attend the plays so there is little room for Winter Texans.

So Bob has been working with mem-bers of the Pharr Community Center to locate Winter Texan parks with large enough stages and resident populations that might enjoy theatrical presentations in their park.

The first play was “The Last Battle of the Civil War,” presented at Tip O Texas. Bob said that because their facility was so much larger than the Pharr Communi-

ty Theater is, there were a few problems with the sound system. But he said the City of Pharr was giving the theater a grant that would enable them to purchase a larger sound system, complete with head microphones that would be adequate for presentations in the larger parks.

Working with Pedro Garcia, director of the Pharr Community Theater and his assistant Isidro Lerma, who is a drama teacher, Bob has accumulated a list of plays that are suitable for presentation in larger parks in the coming season.

The first play, “ The Complete Works of William Shakespeare abridged,” will be shown in December 2016 and January 2017 at Pharr Community Theater. The play is a comedic look at all of William Shakespeare’s plays performed by thee actors in under two hours. The actors in-volve audience members by having them be part of the scenes. It will be available for tour upon request.

“Tick Tick Boom” is to be performed Jan. 7-10, 2017 and will be available for touring Jan. 12-18, 2017. This is an au-tobiographical musical by the creator of “Rent,” where Jonathan Larson is told by friends when he turns 30 to quit doing music and theater and let go of his dreams.

He perseveres through trials until his 31 birthday when he receives a great present.

“Come Back Little Sheba,” will be available for tour Mar. 21-30, 2017. It is the story of a couple who are stuck in a loveless marriage.

“Over the River and Through the Woods” features Nick a single Ital-ian-American guy from New Jersey. His parents retired and moved to Florida but his grandparents are determined to keep Nick home in New Jersey. This play will be available for tour Jan. 2-15, 2017.

“Almost Maine” will be available for tour Feb. 13-25, 2017.

In addition to working with the Pharr Community Center the Watsons are also working with Tom Fuschetto and Tom Peters, on a series of radio shows. Wat-son said “Military Highway Mysteries” a play that tells tales of the Rio Grande Valley including ghost stories and tales of the macabre, will be presented Feb. 24 at Holiday Village.

Bob urges activity directors who would like to see a theatrical production in their park to contact him at (612) 812-6430. He encourages park residents who would like to see theatrical productions in their parks to talk with their activity directors.

By Kathy Olivarez“The Magic of Fashion” the 20th an-

nual Victoria Palms Style Show was held Monday, Feb. 22 in the resort ballroom. The gentlemen of the park escorted the la-dies who arrived for the luncheon to their tables, and they later served the meal. A luncheon of tomato basil soup, chicken salad on a roll, pasta, and chocolate cake

was served. During lunch Jim Demers played live-

ly music to keep the ladies entertained. He played old favorites like “You Are My Sunshine,” “Make the World Go Away,” “He’ll Have to Go,” and “Love Me Ten-der.” When the fashion show started, he played quiet background music.

The clothing used in the style show

The senior softball league is made up of players who are ranked according to their abilities. Those who are more agile, compete in the competitive league. The recreational league is for those who are a little past their prime. The leisure league is for the older players who still love the game but are not able to do as much.

Senior Softball’s motto is “You don’t quit playing when you grow old, you grow old when you quit playing.” The

teams in the finals competition will be di-vided up among the player levels so that each group is matched evenly according to player abilities.

At 10:30 a.m. the ladies who play and the older players will have a softball game.

“This will be a morning full of fun as each player tries hard to win the champi-onship for his or her division,” said Ed Martens, one of the organizers of the Se-nior Softball League. He invites all Win-ter Texans to come out and support their country’s team.

Winter Texans who would like infor-mation on Senior Softball in order to join in on the fun next season should call Ed Martens at (956) 581-2254.

Come on out and join the fun!

and watched a movie. Sounds like the good old days!

Don’t forget the zoo trip to Browns-ville. Or the sunset cruise on a boat in the Laguna Madre. And then there was the beach party with old-fashioned bathing suits and a picnic on the beach.

The Almos Brothers and Angela pro-vided the entertainment, which was coun-try western music with a little old-fash-ioned rock-n-roll mixed in for good measure. Red Hat ladies dressed Angelo up in a red hat and purple boa to make her

an honorary “Red Hat Lady” for the day. Then it was time for the annual pa-

rade where each group attending paraded around the floor showing off their finery. Some were dressed as cowgirls in regular cowgirl outfits with boots, jeans and hats while other carried out the theme in col-ors of red and purple, the Red Hat Society colors. Some costumes were very elegant while others more practical for a cowgirl. Many were covered with bling to repre-sent diamonds!

Everyone enjoyed the event and plans were already underway for the next two years. In 2017, the theme will be Mexi-can Fiesta. It was announced early so the ladies have a full year to plan costumes.
