Approximately 400 Red Hat Society Ladies from all over the Rio Grande Val-ley gathered Feb. 9 at the Nomad Shrine Club in Pharr to enjoy the annual Festival of Tables. This is a special event where Red Hat groups from all over the Rio Grande Valley set a themed table for other Red Hatters to enjoy.

Themes varied from table to table. Many had holiday themes such as Christ-mas, Thanksgiving, Halloween, Easter, Fourth of July, Valentines Days or St. Patrick’s Day or Mardi Gras. Several had water themes like the beach, a lake resort, lighthouses, Hawaii, or fish.

Some had timed themes such as the 1950’s or the Civil War era. Others had themes for celebrations like Mardi Gras and Fiesta. There were a couple of tables set for teas, a formal dinner setting, a Red Hat shoe table, and one for bird hous-es. A couple of tables welcomed spring, while others had specific themes like an-gels, chocolate, Coca-Cola® or rummage sales.

The tables were all beautifully decorat-ed. Many were quite colorful, while other stuck to traditional colors for the themes they represented.

Each table had a different hostess. Some were dressed according to their theme such as a poodle skirt for the 1950’s or a long dress for the Civil War. Others wore traditional Red Hat clothing.

The hostesses represented a variety of

states. Ten were from Minnesota, three from Iowa and Texas. Two were from Kansas, Michigan and Missouri,

There was one each from New York, California, Illinois, Maryland, New Mex-ico, Oklahoma and Wisconsin. One was from the province of Ontario in Canada. The others were unknown.

When the ladies arrived, they walked around the room and viewed the tables. Then instead of sitting with the ladies they came with, the ladies were sent to different tables so they met ladies from all over the nation and discovered what type activities their Red Hat Societies were do-ing.

Chairwoman Jan Bergman called the luncheon to order and introduced her assistant Margie Pert along with several other volunteers.

The category for Twin Size Quilts was led by Jean Cline and Jane Hair’s “The Fish Quilt.” The Fish Quilt is the second fish quilt Cline has made, and it was created especially for Cline’s husband after he asked, “Ar-en’t there any quilts for men?” Cline then looked up the five types of trout that are on the quilt, and hand embroi-dered all the fishing flies that border the quilt.

“I had to look up the fish, but I knew the flies already, so I just made them,” she explained with a smile. “The Golden Trout is only found in Northern Califor-nia, and they’re rare, so I don’t think I’ll catch any in my lifetime, but I’ve caught Brown Trout and Cutthroat Trout before. I’d like to catch some others.”

Also in the Twin quilt category, Anna Schwartz took second place with “An-na’s Whimsical Memories,” Lynne Ben-son and Elaine Hall took third place with “Spinning Wheel of Fire.”

In the Full Size Quilt category, Car-olyn Fox’s “Spring Bouquet” took first place, followed by Marilyn Hearnsberg-er and Linda Garcia’s “Shadow City” in second place, and Judy Brown’s “Stone-henge Smokey River” in third place.

The Queen size category gave Jean Cline and Jane Hair their second first place ribbon with “Not Too Crazy ‘Cra-zy Quilt,” while Doris Priest’s “Feathered Star” took second place, Linda Gainforth took third place with “Sun Bonnet Sue and Overall Bill.”

King size quilt category had Jean Cline once more leading for her third first place ribbon of the show with “Forever Flow-ers” made with Sandy Etheridge, and she also took third place with “The Home Stead” made with Jane Hair. Doris Peltz and Letta Watson took second place with “Wedding Star.”

The Wearables category, which in-cludes both apparel and personal accesso-ries, had Shelly Bryant in first place with “Batik Jacket,” Alice Gibson in second place with “Handbag,” and Monica My-ers in third place with “Winter Warmth.”

The Home Decor category was led by Terry Davis’ “Appliqued Table Topper,” followed by Connie Sullivan’s “Spicy Spiral” in second place, and Carla Me-whinney’s “Falling Leaves” in third place.

The Art Quilt category is made up of quilts that are completely original designs imagined by the quilt maker, and may be any size or shape. Adelyn Nichol took first place with “Gus,” followed by El-

len Untz in second place with “Reverse Applique Wonder,” and Nancy Bush and Barbara Halz in third place with “Parade of Elephants.”

The Military Service Quilt catego-ry was led by Carla Mewhinney’s “Star Spangled” in first place, while Nila J Lay-man and Sharon Crosswhite took second place with “Veteran,” and Bonnie M Hall took third place with “Americana Pin-wheels.”

In the Challenge category, contestants were required to use red, white, and blue colors in their fabrics (although other col-ors were allowed), have an odd number of stars, and depict what a hero meant to them. Karen Okerstrom took first place with her “Maritime Tradition,” Sandi Carstensen took second place with “A Nation Challenged,” and Lynne Benson took third place with “My Heroes: The Firefighters/EMTS.”

The small pieces of the silent auction also won ribbons, with Jessie Vanden Berg’s “Log Cabin Diamonds” taking first place, Donna Williams’ “Catch a Fallen Star taking second place, and Lynne Ben-son’s “Starburst” taking third place.

As a special note, Pat Skye, an RGV Quilt Guild Board member mentioned that this year’s silent auction held the record for highest price ever paid. Jessie Vanden Berg’s “Log Cabin Diamonds” sold for $150.

al Guard get in free with ID. People who buy a ticket to one of the BorderFest con-certs can use their concert ticket to get into BorderFest without buying another ticket.

Pre-sale tickets are available at Hi-dalgo City Hall and State Farm Arena. They are also available at the following locations throughout the Valley. Palinque Grill, Polle Palenque and Taco Palinque.

Mayor Cepeda also announced that in spite of lowering the cost of going to BorderFest to $10 for adults, to make it accessible to more people, the organi-zation would be partnering with St. Ju-de’s Hospital for children with cancer by donating $1 to the hospital for every ticket purchased. Cepeda said the hos-pital treats children regardless of their parents’ ability to pay and BorderFest is proud to partner with the hospital.

Events will kick off on Wednes-day, March 3 with the traditional abra-zo at 9:45 a.m. A festival will ensue in Reynosa as mariachi and folkloric danc-ers cross the bridge. There will also be a group of square dancers that will go across to dance in Mexico and earn their international pins.

according to Fred Renk, owner of Santa Maria Bullring. Karla is from a dynas-ty of matadors. Renk said this will be a one-time opportunity to witness history in the making as Karla will soon be off on a tour of Spain, France and Portugal in the near future. Karla is unique in that she has faced bulls since her early teens. Her daily routine is to train five hours a day, and has the stamina to run ten miles a day in her training.

The bulls she will face on Sunday are of the ranch of Don Fred Renk and Don Longinos Mendoza. They were sired by the great toro of Fred Renk “El Conquis-tador” that is of pure Spanish blood. The press will be here from all over the coun-try to witness this young lady’s perfor-mance.

Sharing the card with Karla is the great matador from Monterrey, Mexico Guillermo Ibarra. He performed in the second corrida in the Santa Maria on Jan. 24. “He received a slight wound to the right thigh, but was able to continue,” said Renk.

The very talented Alexa Michelle Po-sas is due to entertain by singing some of the great mariachi songs at 3:15 p.m. The bullfight starts at 4 p.m.The gates open at 1 p.m. Reservations can be made in advance by calling Fred Renk at the bullring at 1-956-481-3300. Tickets are on sale at the Winter Texan Times, 1217 N. Conway in Mission. Or they may be purchased at Border Tire, located at Bus. 83 and Mayberry Rd. in Mission, phone 956-585-8473.

Although he was born into a musical family, when Johnny Ray Gomez began taking accordion lessons at age 9, he hated them. But when he heard a friend play at school he was impressed and asked who his teacher was. His teacher was well known accordionist Johnny Swoboda. He begged your parents to let him take les-sons from him and promised to practice one hour a day -- and the rest is history.

Gomez has been playing accordion professionally since he was 15. He had a combo called the U-Neeks that included a drummer, guitar-player and Johnny. They played high school dances. At age 21 he was selected as host of Channel 7 Dan-cestand in Omaha, a show that mirrored American Bandstand. The job taught him how to ad lib and keep the audience in-volved. He worked Dancestand for three years before moving on.

He formed a larger group called the Johnny Ray Gomez Revue with four guys and three girls. They started out playing small town casinos in Nevada be-fore making it to the big time when they played Las Vegas at Stardust and Gold Nugget Casinos for the next few years.

At about 36 he returned to Omaha to raised a family, Johnny Ray IV, Tony and

Gina. While his family was growing up he made his home base in Omaha, and for 10 years he was entertainment manager at Bluffs Run Casino in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

In 2015 his friend Bill Chrastil called him and told him there was one spot open in the Entertainer’s Showcase. Chrastil encouraged Gomez to come down and audition. He came down to audition and was heavily booked with a total of 57 show to perform this season. He was even nominated for Novelty/Comedy Act of the Year in the 2016 Valley Star Awards – quite an accomplishment for his first season in the RGV.

Johnny Ray can be seen Thursday, Feb. 25 at Alamo Paradise Park at 4 p.m.; Friday, Feb. 26. Rio Valley Estates; Sun-day, Feb. 28, Magic Valley Park.

He can be seen Tuesday, Mar. 1 at 6:30 p.m. at The Grove Park; Wednesday, Mar. 2 at Restful Valley Ranch; Friday, Mar. 4, Breezelake Camp Ground; Saturday, Mar. 5, Seven Oaks Resort; Sunday, Mar. 6, Paradise South; Wednesday, Mar. 9,Win-ter Haven Resort at 6:30 p.m.; Friday, Mar. 11, Circle TRV Park; Sunday, Mar. 12, Paul’s RV Park; Monday, Mar. 13, Citrus Valley RV Park, 2 p.m.; and Mon-

day, Mar. 13 at Ranchero Village.

From the Ozark Mountains, Link Union will take guests on a journey…through the centuries, over the mountains and across the sea. Their fusion of vocals, old-time instruments and high energy cre-ates a Folk-Rock experience like no other. Link Union is a synergy of the elements of bands such as Mumford and Sons, Alison Krause, and The Avett Brothers, creating a connection with their audience. Whether it’s ancient tunes or their original songs, they never forget where they came from and stay true to their roots.

The Link Family is one of those fam-ilies that learned to perform in the Rio

Grande Valley before moving to other markets. While they used to spend the entire winter here, they are now in de-mand in Arizona and Florida as well. But as they travel from one toward the other, they are swinging down to South Tex-as for two performances this year. They will be at Bentsen Grove in Mission at 7 p.m. on March 2. The other show will be March 3 at Sleepy Valley at 7 p.m. Those are the only two chances to see this dy-namic group.

Rachel Link, who has transformed from a teenage girl in a vivacious young woman, is bandleader on stage. She

plays mandolin, cello and penny whis-tle. She sings lead and harmony. She was two-time winner of the FAME Mandolin Player of the Year and in 2012 was FAME Musician of the Year.

The very talented Kyle Link is a multi-instrumentalist playing mostly fid-dle. He arranges music, writes music and is the main instrumental instructor for the rest of the group.

Ashley Link, Kyle’s wife, plays fiddle and is a busy mother of two.

Ben, now 19, plays mostly banjo, elec-tric and acoustic guitar. He sings lead and harmony and writes a lot of the mu-sic Link Union uses. He was two-time

FAME banjo Player of the Year.Aaron Link is now 16 years old and

is lead guitar player for the band but also plays fiddle and bass. He also writes songs. Aaron is the 2012 FAME Rhythm Guitar Player of the Year.

John Link, 15, now plays bass, drums, sings lead and acts as stagehand.

Mom, Becky Link, sings lead and har-mony, plays keyboard and bass. She is a two-time SPBGMA Midwest Contempo-rary Female Vocalist of the Year.

Dad, Lance Link, is sound engineer, business manager and incredible bus driv-er.

Link Union plans two RGV engagements

Southern Anthem featuring the Pause-wang Family. With Derek telling jokes, Mikaela singing her heart out and 10-year-old Logan’s antics with his fiddle the show was well received. They sang Gospel songs like “If That Don’t Make You Want to Go To Heaven,” “Just a Closer Walk with Thee,” “Three Bells,” and others including the Texas version of “I’ve Been Everywhere.”

French Canadian J. C. Harrisson was next with a variety of songs like “On the Bayou,” “Going to Luckenbach, Texas, “Amarillo by Morning,” “Waltz across Texas,” and his idol, Hank Williams songs, “ Move it on over,” and “Goin’ Down to the River.”

With music from several favorite sing-ers of the 50’s and 60’s, Gordy & Deb-bie Wensel took the stage. They started

out with “Hey Good Lookin’,” and then Gordy did an old Marty Robbin’s favorite, “Singin’ the Blues.” Debbie sang Loretta Lynn’s, “You Ain’t Woman Enough to Take My Man” and “ Kitty Well’s “Wild Side of Life.”

Other songs included “Teddy Bear,’ “Eight Days a Week and “Statue of a Fool,” before Gordy ended their segment by singing, “How Great Thou Art” a ca-pella.

The gospel group 4 His Glory featur-ing Rolando Reyes, Jerry Hartzog, Steve Pavon and Frantis Newell, began with “ The Rock Between the Hard Place and You,” and “I’ll Fly Away.” They also sang “On That Happy Moring,” “Pray for Me,” “Amazing Grace,” and “Sinner Saved by Grace.”

It was another wonderful show with great entertainment and some surprises as the entertainers of the year in the various categories were announced.

STAR AWARDSFrom pg. 1

Afterwards the ladies had a lunch of cor-don bleu, rice and veggies followed by cake.

Entertainment for the event was John-ny Ray Gomez. Gomez is a new enter-tainer in the Valley this year who has been very popular. When he came down to audition at the Entertainers Showcase, he had more people signing him up than any other new entertainer. He received a total

of 57 bookings for the year.He entertained the group with demon-

strations and tales of learning to play the accordion, winning the Ted Mack Talent Contest, and working as host on Dance-stand, Nebraska’s version of American Bandstand.

He played a variety of polkas, some classical music such as the William Tell Overture, and movie themes like Rocky. He asked for the newest bride and the mother who had the most children to raise her hand. The winner had 13 children.
