were looking at the Parks Calendar to see what activities were still going on in the parks. He saw the Painted Cup Farewell Party listed at Pharr South. “Hmm, paint-ing cups. Sounds interesting. Why don’t you go out there and see what that’s all about.”

I agreed and put it on my list of things to do.

Surprise! They were not painting cups! They were having a farewell party sponsored by the residents of Painted Cup Street! This is the 28th year Painted Cup has sponsored the last block party of the year.

Elaine Botelho, one of the sponsors, explained that each street in the park hosts a block party during the year, and Painted Cup Street is the last one to have a party. Instead of having only residents from their street, several years ago they opened to the entire park. This year, they also invited the public because some of the people who come to their weekly

band. They vary the type of music each year. This year it was rock & roll. Last year, they had a bluegrass band. They have also had country music at other par-ties. During the break, he also handed out door prizes. Marion Platte won a green “Irish rabbit” in honor of St. Patrick’s Day. Several others also received door prizes including a pot, a bottle of wine, and some candy to go in a frog basket.

The Judge told the audience the lady from the Winter Texan Times was there to see the cups they painted, bringing laugh-ter from the audience. But then he compli-mented the paper, saying the original pa-per for Winter Texans, the Winter Texan Times, is still the best. (Thank you! We think so!)

After the intermission, the line-up changed a bit and people from the park came up to sing as they would at jams. Pharr South has a large jam in January and February that attracts up to 350 peo-ple for country western music.

Margie Katzman came up in a black

poodle skirt, with a white blouse and black neck scarf. She also had on black and white oxford shoes with socks. She sang, “Splish Splash, I Was Takin’ a Bath,” and “Johnny Be Good.”

Jane Heinen also dressed in a black poodle skirt, white blouse and oxfords, sang “I Don’t Have a Wooden Heart,” and “Bye, Bye Happiness.”

Dale Wayman sang “Sugar Cane Time.” Afterward, Wayman who was a professional musician born the same year as Elvis, sang, “You Ain’t Nothin’ But a Hound Dog.” With the audience calling for an encore, he sang a Merle Haggard song “Way I Am.”

Dan Steele played “Tequila Sunrise.” The Judge sang, “Green-Eyed Elaine,” a song about how much he loved his wife. The band ended with “Take It to the Limit One More Time.”

When the party was over , everyone was bidding their friends farewell until next season. Even though there were no actual painted cups, it was a very nice event!

Thanks for allowing us to be a part of your event.

were quite elaborate. Bill and Mary Baer of St. Louis, Missouri, a couple of first time visitors to the livestock show, were enjoying the projects the students had made. Bill grew up on a farm and said he had made projects for FFA while in high school, “but nothing as elaborate as this one.”

He was admiring an outdoor barbe-cue-cooking center on a trailer. The unit had a barbecue pit, a smoker and sever-al burners for cooking. It had iceboxes or coolers, two pull-out tables for food preparation and a built in picnic table for eating. There were cabinets in front for storing food goods. The top had a west-

ern motif with cutouts of horses, cattle and other items around the square frame where the lights were located.

A couple of other projects that were not quite so elaborate were the teardrop trailers used for hunting or veterinary supplies as one was labeled, These were rounded trailers on wheels that opened in the back to provide space for cooking supplies and equipment. The front had a lockable compartment that could be used for storage.

In the woodworks section another dis-play had a den set that featured several

drawer and shelf units with a large gun cabinet in the front. And for the pooch there was a Texas A&M dog palace paint-ed maroon and white. There was a house where the dog could go inside and a cover over the bowls for water and food. One end had stairs for the dog to go up on top and lie in the sun.

There were many barbecue pits and other similar items on display and sever-al groups of Winter Texans were moving about looking at the projects.

Then it was on to the animal exhibits. First were the pigs in various breeds and colors from pink to dark red and spotted. I took my great grandchildren along – ages 2, 3 and 5. They could not decide which pig they liked best but they wanted to take one home. I told them I did not think the landlord would like to have a pig in their small apartment.

In the show barn arena many people were watching the youth taking part in the Brahma showmanship event. Dean and Jan Stumbo of Iowa, first time RGVLS visitors, were among the many Winter Texans watching the event. They were farmers back in Iowa.

We continued our walk through the cattle barn where Brahman and Brangus cattle were in the stalls. Then we passed the chickens and crossed into the goat barn where goat and sheep were on dis-play. There was a goat show going on and

many youth were outside with their ani-mals grooming them for the show.

Back toward the fairway there was an animal petting zoo and since I had little ones in tow, the zoo was a required visit. My little ones got to see goats with tiny kids, a small deer, a llama, and there was even a small camel on display although no petting was allowed. I bought them a cup of food and they enjoyed feeding the baby goats out of their hands. When the food ran out, my little one tried to feed them the shavings from the floor and was disappointed they would not eat them too.

Moving back down the fairway we just missed the Swimming Pig Show. Groups of Winter Texans had attended and were moving on to other displays. We came to the Action Spot where the action of the moment seemed to be eating instead of entertainment. There I met two Winter Texan couples who were finishing lunch-es of burgers, hot dogs and stuffed pota-toes, some of the many foods available for sale along the fairway.

I asked them what their favorite part of the show was and Ron and Louise Schmitz of Crawfordsville, Iowa said they liked the sheep best because they

had a sheep farm back home. Craig and Nancy Afeld of Glenwood, Arkansas pre-ferred the cattle because they raise Angus and Brahman cattle on their Double A Ranch back home in Arkansas. Both cou-ples winter at Alamo Rec-Veh.

Craig went on to tell me he also had a humpback mule named Belle who was a cross between a Brahman cow and a donkey. I raised a skeptical eyebrow and asked if by any chance he was the presi-dent of the Liars Club at Alamo Rec-Veh.

His wife, Nancy whooped and said I

Bicycle club, quilters honor WWII VeteransBy Jamie Treviño

As flag after flag was retired by flame, as tradition goes, tenants at the W & I Resort stood proudly and looked on as new flags fluttered in the wind.

Saturday, Feb. 26, the W & I Re-sort’s Bicycle Club had its flag re-tirement ceremony for the second year in a row. The ceremony this year honored the resort’s retired World War II veterans, Cecil Massie, Willis Boynton, Barnie Mossburg and Bob

Schawb, who sat in the front row with their wives and were saluted by the many other veterans living in the community.

Garry Davidson, a 77-year-old from Miami, Oklahoma, who spent eight years in the Army Reserves, or-ganized the event both this year and last.

“There were so many flags,” Da-vidson said. “And I wondered what would happen if we did a retirement

LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLLOne of the things we love about our job at the Winter Texan Times is seeing all the fun times Winter Texans have while in the Rio Grande Valley. With Red Hat activities, Texas Citrus Fiesta parade, golf, and jams. Winter Texans have lots of reasons to get out and have a good time.

60,000 omelets and still flippin’Dave Roundtree is back at Victoria Palms for his

seventh season of flipping omelets filled with tomatoes, black olives, ham, bacon, jalapenos, spinach, mush-rooms, green peppers and onions as the customers re-quest. And, of course, topped before folding with lots of cheddar cheese. Just watching the show as he flips the omelets can be fun. Just don’t go away thinking his movements can easily be repeated at home. After prepar-ing 60,000 omelets, Dave has had lots of practice, and he has it down to a science. Perfection!

While Dave’s omelets are a big draw for customers who come not only from Victoria Palms, but also from parks in the surrounding area for breakfast, there are a number of other items on their Sunday buffet that at-tract visitors. Large waffles are made upon request and can be topped with strawberry or pineapple topping and whipped cream. Or they can be topped with both, half and half. Syrup is also available.

They also offer a full breakfast bar with your choice of scrambled eggs -- plain or with bacon, ham or sau-sage. There are hash browns or diced potatoes, ham, ba-con, sausage patties, corned beef hash, fried pork rinds in salsa, and eggs benedict. Look for oatmeal with all kinds of accompaniments, toast, biscuits, sausage gravy

and a full fruit bar with grapes, watermelon, cantaloupe, peaches, grapefruit, oranges and yogurt.

All of these items are available for $10.49 for the breakfast buffet. Chef Mark Arevelo said customers who want something special on the Sunday buffet such as silver dollar pancakes or a baked egg casserole can call one day in advance and request the special items. Victoria Palms is open for breakfast Sunday, and Tues-day through Friday.

Dinner buffets include burgers on Tuesdays, meatloaf or liver and onions on Wednesdays, create-your-own-pasta on Thursdays, and a fish fry on Fridays.

The dining room was filled with Winter Texans who were enjoying breakfast. Jan Brom of Magnolia Park said she came on Sundays for the wonderful omelets that were so reasonably priced.

Daily lunch specials are $6.49.Phyllis Smithson of Iowa and Alamo Rec-Veh said,

“I love the waffles. They are so good with strawberry topping!”

When asked what his favorite thing about the Victoria Palms Sunday buffet was, Joe Stinchfield of Wisconsin answered, “ I like the whole (darn) thing! Everything is good!”

That about sums it up!

ceremony. And boy, was the response great. We ended up retiring about 97 flags this year.”

He was pleased with the success of the actual ceremony, and surprised with the number of people in atten-dance.

“I never thought we’d have this turnout,” Davidson said. “I mean, I think there was 300 people here. Last year, there were about three-quar-ters as many people. So it was still a good turnout, but even more came this year.”

After realizing how many people were willing to participate and attend, Davidson decided to put on a flag re-tirement ceremony for all the worn, older flags, and do it properly. The organization for the event took four months.

“After you scout it out, and you see all the work there was to it, you have to get so much stuff done,” Davidson said. “You have to call the Fire Mar-shall and the police and everything. But we did got it all done, and it just gets bigger and better.”

Davidson had been collecting flags to be retired all year, and also orga-nized getting new flags to be put up around the W & I Resort.

“We’ve got almost 200 new flags in

the park,” Davidson said, “but the or-ganization of the ceremony didn’t get intense until about Feb. 1.”

During this year’s flag retirement ceremony, a few additions were made to further praise both the WWII and other veterans present. The Bicycle Club included Boy Scout Troop 83 from Mission in the ceremony.

The boys were introduced to the four World War II veterans, and rec-reated the famous Iwo Jima flag pose with a flag, famously photographed in 1945. The troop stood in a circle around the barrel as the flags were being lowered into the flames, saluting each time a new flag was retired.

“I used to be a Cub Master when my boys were young,” Davidson said. “So I just went to their center and approached them. And they did good; they did a won-derful job.”

The post-ceremony surprise quilt giv-ing was also a new addition this year. The W & I Quilters, a group of women who get together and quilt unique things every year at the park, got together and made this one of their projects this year. Sandi Carstensen, a 74-year-old member of the club, headed up this project.

“I was actually the chairman of the National Committee for Quilters for eight years,” Carstensen said, “and we had done a project similar to this where we would send quilts to troops overseas in Iraq and

Afghanistan.”The Quilters decided to surprise

the WWII veterans being honored this year, and made each of them a quilt to thank them for their years of service. The project meant a lot to Carstensen.

“I come from a military family,” Carstensen said. “My daughter, my son-in-law are in the military, my hus-band was, by brothers, my father. So many members of my family served in some way. It’s been an honor to do this. I love doing this. I will continue as long as I can take a breath.”

After the closing prayer during the flag retirement ceremony, Barbara Davidson, who helped Garry a great amount in organizing everything, made an announcement that there would be cake and punch in the club-house immediately after, and a few surprises.

Once there, the WWII veterans and their wives were seated once again in the front. They were not told about the gifts they were receiving. Each quilt was held up for the room to see, and wrapped around each vet by the wom-an who made it.

“You never forget,” said Bob Schuab, who spent most of his time on the USS Boxer (CV-21), an aircraft carrier, in 1944. “You never forget if

you’ve served or done things at that time. Thank you.”

All of the veterans expressed their thanks to the quilters, and told the group stories about their time in the military during WWII.

“What a wonderful thing they’ve done for us,” said Barnie Mossburg. “And everybody. My father served in World War I, I was in II. I had a broth-er in II as well, and my uncles. All in the Navy.”

Mossburg went on to further thank not only the quilters, but the bicycle club and the W & I Resort as a whole.

“You know, this is a wonderful place. All you have to be is a little old,” Mossburg said. “I’m just getting into that bracket, I’ll be 95 next year. How much more happier could you be?”

The people in attendance, WWII and other veterans alike, commented on the success of the event and the new dynamics that were included.

“Memories come back during the ceremony,” Davidson said. “A lot of hardships, and a lot of fun. This is for America. I’m thinking about involv-ing other parks next year, so more people can join in. This is patriotism, to honor the troops, and get the flags out there.”

Amish quilts at Texas Quilt MuseumFor those quilters heading home in an

eastward direction at the end of March, La Grange, Texas, located a bit north of Houston is the home of the Texas Quilt Museum. Beginning March 31, they will have an exhibition of Amish quilts on dis-play from the Darwin D. Bearley collec-tion.

The collection features antique Amish quilts created between 1884 and 1940 by Amish quilt makers located in Ohio. The Amish use bold colors, geometric shapes and simple designs that have appealed to quilters for centuries. Ohio Amish quilts are known for scintillating surfaces that incorporate many small pieces of fabric. They often embrace asymmetry in their compositions.

“Examples of these quilts include the Nine Patch, the Double Irish Chain, Log Cabin, Railroad Crossing, Ocean Waves and Star patterns,” states museum curator Dr. Sandra Sider.

“The Darwin D. Bearley collection is by far the most impressive single col-lection of these jewels of American art,” stated Dr. Sider. The exhibit of 24 quilts is located in gallery I.

Galleries II and III showcase 22 works from the “Amazing Applique from 500 Traditional Quilt Books. This is an all new collection never before shown at the museum,” added Sider.

The Texas Quilt Museum is located at 140 W. Colorado Street in La Grange.

Winter Texans traveling home through San Marcos may want to make plans to at-tend the Lyndon Baines Johnson Museum of San Marcos’s Spring shindig on April 23 at 6 p.m. at the Texas White House in the Oak Grove at the LBJ National His-toric Park in Stonewall Texas. Luci John-son and Lynda Johnson Robb will be hon-orary chairs of the event and will establish the Claudia Taylor (Lady Bird) Johnson Endowment for the Museum.

There will be performances by Michael

Martin Murphy, with Ryan Scott Travis, who will open for Murphy. Jan Seides and others from the Texas entertainment scene will participate.

The event will feature Ken Black’s delicious Texas barbecue, wine and beer tasting from Hill Country vineyards, and unique auction items. For more informa-tion, call (512) 353-3300. The museum is free and open Thursday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

On February 25, the 6th Annual Hands Across the Border dinner/dance took place at the Victoria Palms Ballroom.

This event is coordinated and orga-nized by Canadian Winter Victoria Palms residents who volunteer their time. After dinner, the guests are anxious to get on the dance floor and enjoy the music by Renais-sance Rockers. They truly did not disap-point anyone. Their wide range of music appeals to all.

Each year, the committee reaches out to the merchants in the Valley for contribu-tions to be used as door prizes and silent auction packages. Some merchants pre-fer to give a cash donation. All proceeds from the silent auctions, 50/50, a Heads & Tails game, together with any donations re-ceived, go to the Boys & Girls Club to help the youth in Weslaco/Donna area.

Due to the success of the evening, a do-nation of $4,600 was made to Mary Lopes and her assistant, Ashley, of the Boys & Girls Club on Thursday, March 10. The organizing committee is very grateful and extremely thankful of all the Valley mer-chants and resort individuals who gener-ously support this event each year.

A member of the Boys & Girls Club at-tends to speak to the guests of their partici-pation at the club. This year, a presentation was made by Megan Fuentes, a 10-year-old, fifth grader at Memorial Elementary. She has been attending the after-school and summer program since she was 5 years old. Megan is a straight-A student, and loves to volunteer by helping other kids with their homework during power hour. She has also created an art program at the club in which she helps members draw.

had that right. Craig told me that if I did not believe him I could come to Alamo Rec-Veh and see it because he brought it to Texas to show off. He said Belle was tied to the back of his trailer so the folks in South Texas could see what a hump-backed mule looked like. Somehow I did not buy his tall tale but I bet he won the Liars Club award the day he told that one.

Heading toward the exhibit hall we enjoyed walking the aisles and looking at the items on display. Just inside the door, Tom and Ross Curtsinger of Kentucky and Lorna and Grant McLean of Canada were watching the artist draw pictures of

the people seated in front of him. When I asked what their favorite part of the live-stock show was so far, Tom said it was watching the blacksmith in the antique farm equipment barn.

There were lots of boots and hats and western couture available with a big vari-ety of other items available for purchase. Food was available in the back of the room. That’s where I spotted first time visitor Scott Bailey from Thunder Bay, Ontario. He caught my eye because he was wearing a bright red t-shirt that pro-claimed him to be a member of the “Eh Team,” so I knew he had to be Canadian.

On another aisle I met Wayne and Charon Lotz, Winter Texans who were volunteering to give away crosses and re-

ligious materials provided by the Luther-an Churches of the Rio Grande Valley.

We also met a Curtis Rodriguez, a young man showing off his pet, a sugar glider, named Rodeo. The animal ran around his arm and around the neck of a man he put it on. Jaydon, 3, found him fascinating.

Outside, a large crowd had gathered for the chainsaw woodcarving show. There I met Daniel and Denise Descruisseaux of Quebec and Jerry and Belinda Cross of Michigan. All four were first time visitors to the show.

Their favorite part of the show was going down the aisles of the animal barns and seeing the animals. One of the men’s grandfather had been a farmer, so

it brought back memories of his grandfa-ther’s farm. They also enjoyed looking at the 4-H and FFA youth projects.

I asked Belinda if she had enjoyed the group CrossStrung, since she was wear-ing their shirt. She said she had enjoyed the group but especially liked the shirt since their last name was Cross. Jerry was wearing a shirt with Tibet on it so I asked him if he had been to Tibet. He said they had traveled to the base camp for climb-ing Mount Everest.

Wednesday was Winter Texan day at the RGVLS and seniors could get in for half price. It appeared many Winter Tex-ans were taking advantage of the lower cost and enjoying the sights of the live-stock show.

Bit O’ Heaven has Mardi Gras costume danceOn Tuesday, Feb. 9, residents of

Bit O’ Heaven RV Park in Donna cel-ebrated Fat Tuesday with a costumed dance. Many residents were dressed up in costumes, from traditional Mar-di Gras clown or jester costumes to other colorful characters.

There were costumes from the Colonial era, leprechauns, kings and

queens, waitresses serving drinks, and ladies looking like genies just released from their bottles, and oth-er colorful garb. Many residents had fancy masks or colorful bow ties or other items that go with Mardi Gras celebrations. Gold, green and purple beads were passed out to party partic-ipants.

Benola Robinson, one of the host-esses for the event, said she was en-couraging people to come out in cos-tume for the dance. “Over the past few years, more and more people are getting into the spirit of things and dressing up in costumes. It gets bet-ter each year,” she added. Benola and her husband Jerry were dressed in tra-ditional gold and purple Mardi Gras costumes complete with masks.

Kathy Olivarez of the Winter Texan Times and Fran Adams of Welcome Home RGV were invited to be judges

of the best costumes. After viewing the costumes on parade the two judg-es decided the best costumes were of a couple dressed as devils. Don and Paulette Kraichy of West St. Paul, Manitoba, Canada took the honors.

Marvin Van Keulen of Mineral, Il-linois, won Most Ridiculous Costume in his purple tutu.

The Best Single Costume went to “almost” 85-year-old Bonnie Cad-walader of Bushnell, Illinois who wore a jester suit and hat.
