the Kootenay Wom-en’s Show, on March 28 at the Prestige Rocky Mountain Re-sort in Cranbrook.

Lily Durham, mar-keting manager at the Kootenay News Advertiser, said that

the Women’s Show has been running for 11 years now and has been growing since its � rst run.

“It started as a trib-ute to International Women’s Day and we wanted a way to hon-our the women of the community, from those who work at

A short history of dragon boat racing and breast cancerThe Abreast in the

Rockies Dragon Boat Team is one of the reasons why there is a Kootenay Women’s Show. Below is the history of why drag-on boat teams were formed in the first place.

In the fall of 1995, Dr. Don McKenzie, a

sports medicine physician and an exercise physiolo-

gist, was conduct-ing a research proj-ect at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, BC. This study looked at breast cancer survi-vors who had been advised to restrict activities involving the upper body. Dr. McKenzie’s idea was to form an all breast cancer survivors’ dragon boat team to discover if strenu-ous, repetitive, up-

per body exercise was detrimental to

breast cancer sur-vivors. In Febru-

ary, 1996, the first team was formed.

The only criteria to join this team was a history of breast cancer. Age, athletic ability, paddling ex-perience - none of this mattered. Pad-dlers came from all parts of the Vancou-ver area and from all walks of life. Ages ranged from 31 to 62. It was proven that strenuous ex-ercise was good for cancer survivors. The group transformed from a dragon boat team of breast can-cer survivors to an inspiration to all.

What is a dragon boat?

A dragon boat is a very long and nar-row human-pow-ered boat now used in the team paddling sport of dragon boat racing which origi-nated in China in pre-Christian times. While competition has taken place an-nually for more than 20 centuries as part of a folk ritual, it emerged in modern times as an inter-national “sport” in Hong Kong in 1976. The racing of drag-on boats is among mankind’s oldest organized competi-tions.
