Simply put the scrutinites afford the unbaptized Elect, and indeed the entire Church, the opportunity to examine their own hearts and minds by the light of gospel. The focus of the scrutinies is to “uncover”, then heal all that is weak, defective, or sinful in the hearts of the elect; to bring out, then strengthen all that is upright, strong and good. The scrutinies are celebrated to deliver the elect from the power of sin and Satan, to protect them against temptation, and give them strength in Christ, who is the way, the truth and the life. [RCIA 141] The first scrutiny on the Third Sunday of Lent, with the Gospel of the Women at the Well focuses primarily on the individual aspect of sin. The story suggests that the woman’s isolation and her desire for a water which will never cause her to thirst again are the result of her own sin. She rejoins the community having met Jesus. The second scrutiny, with the gospel of the Man Born Blind focuses primarily on the social aspect of sin. We consider not only the physical healing of the blind man, but on his gradual growing insight concerning Jesus. Jesus names as sinners in this story, those who choose blindness and then call it sight in order to maintain their own positions. Through the unbap- tized elect, we Christians are called to stop cooperating with the blind- ness that the world calls light: sinful social structures that oppress peo- ple. The third scrutiny calls upon the elect to deal with the death- dealing power of the spirit of evil and see Christ as having power to free them and all creation from death. The story is the Raising of Lazarus. The demons are named as racism, materialism, militarism, addictions to substances and behaviors, and other powers with claim dominion over human life. Through the Scripture readings of the Third, Fourth and Fifth Sundays of Lent, and the rituals of the scrutinies the unbaptized elect and all the baptized as well are prepared to answer the first three questions asked at the Easter Vigil: “Do you renounce Satan? And all his works? And all his empty promises?” The scrutiny Sundays finally present the elect and the baptized with images and symbols that will also figure heavily during the Easter Vigil: The images of water, light and new life will occur again and again during Eastertide-giving us a language for all of us to use in unlocking the mystery of baptism life. Celebration the Scrutinies: Eden Gone to Ashes and Back Again

More and more, Lent in the parish is marked by the presence of the unbaptized during the Liturgy of the Word, particularly by the special prayers called Scrutinies done on the Third, Fourth and Fifth Sundays of Lent. Dear Friends, This weekend the Gospel presents to us the raising of Lazarus from the dead. Sometimes when I consider the Scriptures readings in preparing a Sunday homily I am amazed at the wisdom of the Biblical and Liturgical scholars who placed the readings in the Cycle of readings we hear over the course of time. It’s amazing for us to hear the story of the raising of Lazarus as we see the hope of Easter ahead. Actually, prior to the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy from the Second Vatican Council in 1964, which included the Revision of the Lectionary for Mass, Catholics rarely heard this Gospel passage from St John. In fact, as a result of the revisions to the Lectionary, Catholics now hear more Scripture than any other religious denomination. Having the breadth and depth of the Biblical readings on our plate each Sunday is a true feast. This weekend, is the annual Gator Gala. We will be at the Shaw Center and hopefully next year can consider it being held in our new gymnasium. Hope you can be at the Gala. Monday Nights of Lent Confessions continue this Monday and the next before Easter. The last session on March 29th will be from 5:00-6:15pm. Holy Week will begin next week with the observance of Passion Palm Sunday. During Holy Week the Church asks us to live the week differently than usual, with the observance of the Triduum, beginning on Holy Thursday evening with mass, Good Friday observance, Easter Vigil and Easter Sunday. We can do these services during Holy Week in church because we are able to keep Holy Week in our daily lives. This is the week we Catholics drop off the map a bit, not engage in what our usual pleasures might be, and engage fasting head on. See what benefits and blessings await us! I hope you will be a part of all we do during Holy Week at St Jean Vianney. Love,

VOCATION Unless a seed first dries out and dies it cannot be planted in the earth to grow. Unless we die to our selfish ways we can never expect to be people whom will "lay down their lives for their friends". If you think God is calling you to lay down your life as a priest or religious for His Church, call or Father Matt Dupré at 225.336.8778, [email protected], or visit, www.diobr.org/vocations.

Recital of Sacred Instrumental music Sunday evening, March 22nd at 7 PM, following the 5:30pm Mass. Dr. Andry’s students have been blessed with their talent and this is their way of giving back to our Lord and giving thanks for that wonderful gift of music by sharing it with the community in the beautiful sanctuary of the St. Jean Vianney Church. They will be performing some of the greatest sacred works written by composers such as Palestrina, Josquin, Mozart, and Barber. The concert is free and open to the public.

A BIBLICAL WALK THROUGH THE MASS

Based on the revised translation of the Mass, this five-part program takes participants on an exciting tour of the Liturgy as it explores the biblical roots of the words and gestures we experience at Mass and explains their profound significance. See, perhaps for the first time, why we say what we say and do what we do every week at Mass. The words and gestures will be seen in a new light, giving new life to the liturgical experience. The Student Pack includes the study’s 165 page textbook A Biblical Walk Through the Mass and the 36 page Student Workbook. Pack corresponds to the DVD presentations. $20 For more information email Patsy Burgess at [email protected]
