There is evidence of climate change, from shrinking polar ice and California wildfi res to more frequent fl ooding along the Illinois River. While the climate is changing there are questions behind the causes of these changes.

A new WTVP documentary exploring the impact of climatic changes on life here in Central Illinois premieres March 11, 7 p.m. on WTVP HD 47.1. The program is made possible by the Backlund Charitable Trust.

Written and produced by At Issue host H Wayne Wilson, Coping with Climate Change: An Illinois Perspective examines evidence changing climate patterns are disrupting life in our region. One area of concern is farming, where producers face everything from decreasing yields, drought and periods of intense rain, to frequent fl ooding and new varieties of weeds.

The 30-minute documentary also addresses the strain on urban infrastructure caused by heavy rain, drought and erosion. As area coal power plants close, wind, solar power and new farming technology are among the solutions being put forth to address concerns.

Coping with Climate Change: An Illinois Perspective is the latest documentary about Illinois environmental issues produced by WTVP in recent years. Others include The Illinois River, a two-part series on fi sh, waterfowl and sedimentation in the Illinois River valley, Nature Returns to Emiquon, about the successful reclamation of natural wetlands, and Preserving Illinois Prairies, which looks at efforts to preserve remnants of the state’s prairies for future generations.

“The vast majority of global warming, that increase in average global temperature and therefore climate change from that, is due to human attributable, or anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gases.”— Trent Ford, Illinois State Climatologist

“The climate is changing…I think the key is are we causing that change as a human race? I have never seen any real good evidence that that is the case, that we’re causing this change.”— Mike McClellan, Mobile Weather Team, Inc.

Every organization must stay relevant. Nowhere is that challenge so great as in the world of media. As WTVP marks 50 years of service this summer, I am inspired to think of all the ways this organization continues to stay strong and relevant in our changing world.

First of all, WTVP never stands still. Technology and consumer preferences are constantly changing; it wouldn’t take long to be left behind. Whether it’s fresh programming, new and expanding channels or planned technology upgrades in our studio, WTVP is always listening, planning and moving forward.

WTVP has always recognized the public we serve is not just one group of people, one city or town, or one defi nition of artistic taste. The station stays relevant by refl ecting and supporting all of Central Illinois through content, outreach and community engagement. The station stays true to its roots through local documentaries and public affairs programming, collaboration with the arts community and home-grown educational resources like WTVP REMOTE.

Most important, staying relevant means recognizing that WHAT we do is not as important as WHY we do it — to enrich the lives of people in Central Illinois. Thank you for helping WTVP stay in touch!

STAYING RELEVANT IN A CHANGING WORLD

WTVP is pleased to welcome Thomas Zimmerman II as the station’s Director of Philanthropic Relations. Tom will work with the philanthropic community to oversee major gifts and acquisitions and cultivate community partnerships throughout Central Illinois.

A Peoria native with many local ties, Tom brings more than 30 years of nonprofi t management and leadership to the position. He has worked with a number of industry leading global relief organizations, including the International Rescue Committee, Catholic Relief Services and Oxfam America, managing large scale projects and serving as liaison with community organizations, governments and the public. He was most recently the Director of Capital and Endowment Development for the W. D. Boyce Council, Boy Scouts of America.

After graduating from Creighton University, Tom served in the U.S. Peace Corps in Kenya, where he fell in love with Africa and focused his career on managing and supporting humanitarian efforts and development programs. He has a master’s degree in economics and social change and development from Johns Hopkins University.

Tom lives in Dunlap with his wife and two children. He says he is looking forward to renewing his many local ties and making new connections with viewers, members and supporters to increase awareness and passion for public media in our communities.

programming HIGHLIGHTS

INDEPENDENT LENS: MY COUNTRY NO MOREMONDAY, MARCH 15, 9 PM

Between 2011 and 2016, oil drilling in rural North Dakota reached its peak, setting off a modern-day gold rush in the quiet, tight-knit farm town of Trenton, North Dakota, population less than 1,000. With billions of dollars to be gained in an industry friendly state with a “reasonable regulation” climate, small towns like Trenton became overwhelmed by an infl ux of workers, and countless acres of farmland were repurposed for industrial development. Through the voices of Trenton’s residents, My Country No More challenges the notion of “progress” and questions the long-term human consequences of short-term approaches to land use, decisions that ultimately affect all Americans, rural and urban alike.

AMERICA'S FIRST FOREST: CARL SCHENCK AND THE ASHEVILLE EXPERIMENTMONDAY, MARCH 15, 10 PM

Based on Dr. Carl Alwin Schenck's memoir, this experiment examines the pivotal role played by pioneering forestry educator Carl Schenck and his founding of America's fi rst school of forestry, the Biltmore Forest School.

NOTE FROM THE STATION MANAGER

March is a time of great expectations. Winter’s cold grip is loosening, daylight is growing longer and there is anticipation for a return to outdoor activities. March is also when WTVP and PBS showcase the variety of programs you can enjoy year-round.

Several evenings this month WTVP will air what I consider one of the pillars that make this station unique — local productions. Delve into local history on March 4 with Lydia: Ahead of Her Time and From Distilleries to Stills: Prohibition in Peoria.

On March 11 we premiere our newest documentary, Coping with Climate Change: An Illinois Perspective, followed by Nature Returns to Emiquon. Both are made possible by a generous donation from the Backlund Charitable Trust; both feature spectacular photography and editing by Senior Producer/Director Todd K. Pilon. And on March 20, the fi fth season of State & Water premieres with a performance by Easy Riders.

These shows, along with our weekly series At Issue, Business Forward and Consider This, tell our Central Illinois story, examine issues that affect us all and showcase area talent. All of this is made possible by the continuing support of our members. So go ahead, expect the best from WTVP. In March (and every month), we deliver. Thank you!

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS! • Round one starts with 16 programs (listed below) representing a cross section of WTVP and PBS primetime

programming. • Beginning on Monday, March 1, visit the WTVP Viewer’s Choice page on the WTVP website and vote for your

favorite(s).* • On Friday, March 5, half of the competing programs will be eliminated (based on the voting). • The top vote-getters will move to the next round, with voting opening the following Monday. • This will continue all through March until one program is named the WTVP Viewer’s Choice on March 29 and

a winner’s name is drawn randomly from all voters!

HERE’S WHAT YOU CAN WIN!When the winning program is announced on March 29, we’ll toss all of the voters’ names into a hat and then pull one out. That person will win: • A selection of WTVP and PBS merchandise and DVDs • A six-month subscription to the WTVP Program Guide. Keep it for yourself (non-members) or give it to a

friend, family member, neighbor or co-worker (current members).

Visit www.wtvp.org/viewerschoice for details and to cast your votes.

*Online voting only. See website for complete rules.

NEWSHOURPBS

SWTVP programming is like ice cream, right? It’s ALL good, but everyone has a favorite. OK, maybe we should make that favorites. In any case, you can now vote for your all-time favorite primetime WTVP and PBS programs in the WTVP Viewer’s Choice, Primetime Edition.

It may not be easy to narrow it down between science, nature, news, how-to, music, history, drama, local public affairs programming and more. But hey, life is full of choices. Every vote you cast enters your name to win great prizes … sort of a double scoop of fun!

NOTE FROM THE CHAIRMAN

ANDREW A. RANDChairman, IVPTC Board of Directors

YOU CAN HELP SECURE THE FUTURE OF WTVP

WTVP

I have a suggestion for anyone who gets weary of emails, letters and calls from organizations asking for donations. Instead of making spur-of-the-moment decisions with your “delete” button, take time to integrate a giving strategy into your fi nancial plan.

Planned giving gives you the satisfaction of knowing you are supporting the organizations that mean the most to you, not just the ones who send the most emails. You can still give to as many organizations as you want (including WTVP), but in a carefully considered, systematic way.

Set aside some time with your attorney and fi nancial advisors to thoughtfully consider where your gift can best support your goals and values. The planned giving strategies of WTVP donors give us confi dence to continue serving the education, entertainment and information needs of Central Illinois.

If you have already included WTVP in your long-term giving plans, thank you! If not, please consider joining me and other board members in making provisions for WTVP. It can be as simple as a bequest to the station in your will or a generous gift to the WTVPEndowment Fund. The Development Department would love to talk to you about the many options. Call 309.495.0547 or email [email protected]. Thank you!

Artist Jessica McGhee fi nds beauty in discarded things … paper, plastics, even people. The beautiful pieces at Hey Lola Art Company seem to defy the fact they were once someone’s discarded trash. Owner/Artist Jessica McGhee says her art gives her a creative outlet for life experiences includinghomelessness, exotic dancing and bartending. It also helps the environment and helps her make a living she enjoys.

Consider This with Yvonne Greer is a talk show produced by WTVP featuring the people in our community in a whole new way. The intent is to connect with our leaders, entertainers and maybe even our neighbors in ways we may have never considered.

Scientists explore the impact of climate change and what could happen if global warming exceeds 1.5 degrees. Discover how the latest innovations and technology are posing potential solutions and what individuals can do to prevent further damage.

THE TRUTH ABOUT FATWEDNESDAY, MARCH 10, 8:30 PMDo we control our fat, or does it control us? For generations, overweight individuals have been stigmatized and cast as lazy. But scientists are coming to understand fat as a fascinating and dynamic organ—one whose size has more to do with biological processes than personal choices. Through real-life stories of hunter-gatherers, sumo wrestlers, and supermodels, NOVA explores the complex functions of fat and the role it plays in controlling hunger, hormones and even reproduction.

DEAD SEA SCROLL DETECTIVESWEDNESDAY, MARCH 17, 8 PMSince the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered in 1947, these fragile parchment relics have intrigued scholars, religious leaders and profi teers alike. The 2,000-year-old scrolls include the oldest known versions of the Hebrew Bible and hold vital clues about the birth of Christianity. While certain scrolls have survived intact, others have been ravaged by time—burnt, decayed or torn to pieces—and remain an enigma. Now, scientists are using new technologies to read the unreadable, solve mysteries that have endured for millenniaand discover million dollar fakes.

SAVING THE DEAD SEAWEDNESDAY, MARCH 24, 8 PMThe Dead Sea is dying: Since 1976, its level has dropped more than 100 feet, leaving its coastline pockmarked with thousands of sinkholes. After more than a decade of research and debate, scientists, engineers and political leaders have come up with a daring plan: connect the Red Sea to the Dead Sea by way of a massive desalination plant. If it’s successful, the project could not only revive the sea, but also help ease political tensions and water shortages in the region.

MYSTERY BENEATH THE ICEWEDNESDAY, MARCH 31, 9 PMNOVA travels on the Polarstern, a state-of-the-art research vessel, to the frigid ice pack in the dead of winter. From camps established on the ice, scientists dive beneath the surface in search of the ice caves that shelter juvenile krill during the winter. There, they hope to discover what’s causing the krill to vanish and, ultimately, how the shifting seasons caused by climate change could disrupt ecosystems around the world.

AMERICA REFRAMED: BRING IT HOMETUESDAY, MARCH 23, 7 PM

The story of fi ve Ohio families at a crossroads after the sudden closing of the GM Lordstown auto plant. The decision by GM forces thousands of families in the Mahoning Valley to decide between taking a transfer to an out-of-state plant or staying put. If they stay, they risk losing their employment, health and retirement benefi ts. As they wrestle these tough choices, they are left wondering why a company recording billions in profi ts is shuttering factories.

AMERICA REFRAMED: THE PLACE THAT MAKES US TUESDAY, MARCH 30, 7 PM

A quintessential post-industrial American city is seen through the efforts of a new generation. This fi lm is an inspiring portrait of Youngstown, Ohio, activists and leaders who have chosen not to abandon their hometown, but to stay, rebuild and make a life for themselves. Small business owners, city employees, nonprofi t leaders and local workers are unbeholden to the memory of Youngstown’s heyday, and together they envision a new future. The Place That Makes Us is a powerful testament of the resilience and dedication it takes to change a community.

WTVP 47.4 highlights

WTVP REMOTE the exciting new way to continue to learn and grow (at any age). In March we are showcasing programs featuring culture and women’s history.

SCIGIRLS DAILY 11 AM

SciGirls is an Emmy award-winning WTVP REMOTE show, website and educational outreach program drawing on cutting-edge research about what engages girls in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) learning and careers.

BY ONE VOTE: WOMAN SUFFRAGE IN THE SOUTHWEDNESDAY, MARCH 3, 3 PM

In August 1920 in Nashville, Tennessee, legislators cast the deciding vote to ratify the 19th Amendment, thus giving women in the United States the right to vote. Narrated by Rosanne Cash, By One Vote: Woman Suffrage in the South chronicles events leading up to that turbulent, nail-biting showdown.

ON WITH THE SHOW! TUESDAY, MARCH 23, 2 PM

Bugs Bunny was among the silver screen's biggest star for more than 80 years, and his impact on global culture continues to grow daily from musicals to fi lms to sitcoms and standup comedy! Most Americans have learned about classical music through Bugs Bunny. Here we feature 12 classical music works and discussion by Emmy and Peabody Award winners and scholars on the importance of these cartoons for conveying classical music learning.

THE FRANK CAPRA STORY: A WONDERFUL LIFE TUESDAY, MARCH 23, 2:30 PM

A Telly Award-winning documentary (2020) on Oscar- winning fi lmmaker Frank Capra, who is famous for directing It's a Wonderful Life, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington and other classic fi lms of the Hollywood Golden Era. The fi lm features more than 300 fi lm production photos never before seen on TV from these studio classics, obtained from the National Archives and the library at Brigham Young University's Jimmy Stewart Collection and other sources.
