From the Board Submitted by Dave Presuhn

With all the rain over the first 2 months, isn’t it nice to have a great indoor court complex to help us continue our New Year resolu-tions to play better tennis? And, as if we all needed a reminder, spring is coming so it’s

time to get in shape for summer.

Our newly installed 2020 Board of Directors

officers and committee members are:

President: Kathie Weibel Vice President: Dave Presuhn Treasurer: Carlos Lacayo

Secretary: Maribel Harrell

Finance Committee: Carlos Lacayo (chair),

Lisa Battaglia, Dave Presuhn

Human Resources Committee: Scott Ngu-yen (chair), Stuart Thompson,

Maribel Harrell

Governance Committee: Stuart Thompson

(chair), Kathie Weibel, Lisa Battaglia

Scholarship Committee: Stuart Thompson

Of first and foremost concern, the Board has endorsed club management actions mitigat-ing the impact of the COVID-19, Corona-virus. You all should have received an e-mail explaining how the club is responding to the situation. BETC has updated several policies and increased sanitizing efforts to help main-tain a healthy environment at the club. Poli-cies regarding cancelling court reservations have been adjusted as well as advice for league substitutions. If you have any symp-toms of illness or have been exposed to individuals who may be infected, please stay

home and do not come to BETC.

The Board has an additional pressing con-cern. You may have noticed the signs on

property around the club advertising the area is available for commercial develop-ment. While a large area of what was Boeing parking has been sold and designated for development, it does not include the areas occupied by the club building and parking adjacent to the club. Those areas are under lease to the club for 10 more years. The strategy of BETC has been to buy the land we now lease, and we have been investing conservatively to execute that plan. We are concerned that the development underway may raise the price of the club property be-yond our savings capability. The Board is exploring business and financial options to leverage our invested money and be able sustain the club for the foreseeable future. We are open to any ideas, so if you’ve got an idea (or some money looking for a good cause), feel free to contact any of the above

listed Board members.

Most tennis players have been taught that there is very little back-swing on volleys. However, many players end up taking too big of a wind up on their volleys, especially

the forehand volley.

To remedy the problem of swinging on your volleys you need a different perspective. Replace the negative thought of taking too big of a back-swing with a positive thought of moving your hand forward toward the ball. On a forehand volley you will need to move your racquet for-ward on your preparation. This will

eliminate a big backswing.

Bob and Mike Bryan are widely con-sidered to be the greatest doubles team of all time, with 16 Grand Slam titles and an Olympic Gold Medal. Much of their success can be at-tributed to their quick hands and

constant work on volleying. Their famous RDC Volley Drill incorporates lateral movement with quick, short swings crosscourt volleys. Watch the drill in ac-

tion here:

So to improve your volley tell yourself to move your hand slightly forward to the height of the incoming ball. You will then be able to hit your volley well in front of you. This will give you more power and

control.
