WHOSE FAULT IS IT?

Recently I came across the following story: A man came to work each day with his lunch box under his arm. At lunch time everyday he went through the exact same ritual. He opened the lunch box, unwrapped the sandwiches, took out one sandwich and exclaimed, “Oh no! Not cheese again!”

This went on day after day and his co-workers could stand it no longer. One man finally said, “Look dummy, why don’t you just ask your wife to put something else in the sandwiches?”

“What wife? I am not married,” replied the man. “Then who makes the sandwiches?” he was asked. “I do”, was the reply!

Our spiritual lives (and the season of Lent) can be like that. It’s easy to get into the same old rut with no one to really blame but ourselves. Lent is a good time to strengthen the personal maturity needed to take responsibility for our life, and for the way it is lived.

We still have two weeks to Easter. Resolve now to use these Lenten days correctly and take responsibility for how you celebrate your faith.

WELCOME EVA

We warmly welcome our new parish bookkeeper, Eva Ashor. Eva lives in Troy with her husband and two sons. She has a masters degree in finance and monetary policy. Eva will be working at STM in a part-time position (2 days a week) while continuing her duties as Business Manager for St. Owen Parish in Bloomfield Hills.

Welcome aboard, Eva!

Have a wonderful faith filled week and lets remember each other in prayer. Msgr. Tom Rice

PILGRIMS ON A JOURNEY By Deacon Christopher Stark

A NOTE FROM OUR PASTOR

It is great to be home! I am sorry to have been out of the parish this past weekend. I had the burden of leaving here, and working in Boynton Beach, FL from the previous Thursday, through Sunday. It was a tough assignment…but somebody had to do it.

Yes, I was able to go south and escape this continuing winter weather for a couple days of sunny and warm Florida sunshine. I had the opportunity to go with two of my peers and present the mission and message of Guest House to an audience of seminarians and faculty. This is a much needed service that Guest House provides our Church’s future clergy – in driving awareness of addiction, self-awareness, and providing support resources to those within our parishes who may need help from their clergy. What a blessing this line of work has become for me, as I witness the scourge of addiction that is wreaking havoc on so many people in our community – and communities all across our country. I’m confident that you know, love, or may actually be someone who is struggling with addiction. In fact, about 15% of our country’s general population will suffer from some form of substance or process addiction. Sadder-yet, is that less than 3% will ever seek and receive help. There are so many folks struggling in our world…but there is hope…and there is recovery. If you or someone you know is ever in need of help from me – please just let me know. I may not be the exact resource that you require – but I will certainly help you find a link to a resource who can help you or the one you know.

This reality – this challenge we face as a people – is a part of our collective pilgrimage through life. Life’s not a walk in the park. Life’s a struggle at times. It’s not always drudgery and hardship…but sometimes, it can certainly feel that way. Life has its ups and downs. How we address life’s challenges is how we continue to grow as individuals, families, and as a community. Like it or not…we’re all in this thing together. And…whether individually, as a family…or as a community – none of us is ever alone… Our God is always with us. God desires us to have healthy, whole, and balanced lives. Lives with purpose, passion, and meaning. “I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.” (John 10:10)

Our God loves us, and He made us in such a way that we may have a full and rewarding life. And, like everything else in life that matters – we have to invest of ourselves to cooperate with God and His plans for us.

TENEBRAE

A “Service of Shadows” will take place on March 23, at 7:00 PM. It is called Tenebrae. Every year the Vatican has Tenebrae two times: Wednesday of Holy Week and Good Friday evening. The experience of Tenebrae is very moving. It symbolizes the death of Jesus in a different way. It originated as a monastic tradition, and is still relevant today. The Music Ministry has been rehearsing tirelessly to make sure all aspects of this service are up to the best standards we can achieve. Please join us.

Sincerely,

Brian Foos

PARISH MISSION STATEMENT

We the Christian Community of St. Thomas More, in an atmosphere of hospitality, are dedicated to proclaiming the

life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ through excellence in worship, education, and service to others.

We believe that the nurturing of the community around the Eucharistic Table is extended through gatherings which further strengthen and support us. We shall pursue this mission faithfully through the power of the Holy Spirit

and the gifts and talents of our members.

STM BOOK CLUB

The St. Thomas More Book Club will next meet Tuesday, March 20 in Room 2 at 10AM. The book selection for discussion is Getting Religion: Faith, Culture, and Politics from the Age of Eisenhower to the Era of Obama by Kenneth L. Woodward. It is an examination of how American religion, culture, and politics influenced each other in the second half of the twentieth century. This is one of the more scholarly books that we have selected and should make for an interesting discussion.

We hope you can join us on Tuesday, March 20 at 10AM!

Good Friday Men’s Chorus

March 30th is Good Friday, the Passion of the Lord. A Men’s Chorus will sing the 12:30 service, as we did last year. Many have asked if we will be able to do it again this year. To me, this is a great privilege—the ministry of music to lead the faithful to a closer spirituality, to help all to live out the Gospel to our greatest ability. We had a wonder group of men last year and it was very moving to me and to our parish of St. Thomas More.

We will have 2 rehearsals; Saturday, March 17th and March 24th at 1:00pm in the church. Please consider adding this to your schedule. The time commitment is minimal and each of you are very important.

If you have the ability to sing and the willingness, please join us. Any questions? Just phone or catch me after any Mass.

Sincerely,

Brian Foos

CHRISTIAN SERVICE

"Sharing Christ in and through the Church"

ON THE RISE BAKERY is coming to St. Thomas More!

PALM SUNDAY WEEKEND March 24 & 25 (after all Masses)

About 10 years ago, Brother Ray Stadmeyer of the Capuchin Soup Kitchen in Detroit, began a program known formally as, Reaching our Potential Every Day (ROPE) for men coming out of prison or drug and alcohol treatment centers. The program offered these men an opportunity to learn vocational skills and to become attuned to their spiritual lives.

Learning to bake was one of the skills. “On the Rise Bakery” was the result of this effort. The bakery comes to churches in Metropolitan Detroit on weekends and also maintains a café and bakery on Gratiot in Detroit. We are always happy to have them come to STM. Be sure to try the Brownies!

We are in need of three people after each Mass to assist in selling the baked goods. If you are interested in helping with this project, please Carole or Jerry Sugrue at 248-644-6853.

Thank you for your participation and support!

At least 15 volunteers, adults and high school students who need community service credit, are needed at each session. In the past, volunteers have commented that it was an enjoyable and rewarding experience.

If you would like to help this year, please call Carole or Jerry Sugrue at 248-644-6853.

Thank you.

STEWARDSHIP TIME, TALENT AND TREASURE

EVANGELIZATION UNLEASH THE GOSPEL

Fifth Sunday of Lent—March 17/18

In today’s Gospel, St. John tells the story of Lazarus dying and Jesus raising him from the dead. This miracle prefigures Jesus’ own death and Resurrection. Our Lord exhibits His glory and power by returning the gift of life to Lazarus. The Scripture readings from both the prophet Ezekiel and St. Paul’s Letter to the Roman community profess that the Spirit of God lives in us and raises us to a life void of the death of sin. The Church has consistently embraced the sanctity and preservation of all human life, from her earliest days when Christians saved abandoned Roman children left to die in the elements. The Church strongly emphasizes that life must be protected from conception to natural death. As faithful stewards, we recognize life in all its forms as a God-created gift. We support the Church’s teachings on the sanctity of life in opposition to secular society’s “culture of death.” This culture promotes the destruction of life at all stages, beginning with embryonic stem cell research, then abortion, and finally euthanasia. This Lent, participate in a prayer vigil for life.

A Change of Heart

Many readings in Lent speak of repentance, of turning away from sin and toward Jesus with our hearts open to receive the gift of His Spirit. Jesus fervently desires for us to be one with Him, to reside in our hearts. In today’s first reading, Jeremiah (31:31-34) speaks to the people in Jerusalem after the Babylonians captured the city. Jeremiah proclaims, the Lord says:

“I will place my law within them and write it upon their hearts; I will be their God, and they shall be my people.”

The theme is repeated in today’s Psalm (51:12): “A clean heart create for me, God; renew within me a steadfast Spirit.”

Today’s Letter to the Hebrews (5:7-9) shows that even Jesus humbly “offered prayers and supplications with loud cries and tears” that He might be “made perfect,” that is, conform His heart to the Father’s will. And in the Gospel, Jesus teaches the necessity of our being humble and united with Him to do His work:

“Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there also will my servant be.” (John 12:26)

To prepare us for that work of evangelization, Unleash the Gospel calls us to renew our hearts through prayer to the Holy Spirit. With the power of the Spirit in our hearts, we can go forth to share the Gospel effectively, lovingly. Archbishop Vigneron wrote, “There is no limit to what the Lord can do in our midst. His part is to clothe his Church with ‘power from on high’ (cf, Luke 24:49) for the accomplishment of her mission. Our part is to give him our wholehearted ‘yes’ - to let ourselves be transformed, guided, and sent forth by the Holy Spirit, who is the ‘principal agent of evangelization.’” “The Holy Spirit is God’s love poured into our hearts, revealing to us the Lordship of Jesus and our own exalted identity as beloved sons and daughters of God.”

Unleash the Gospel is a call to change the culture and win the world back for God. Indeed, “the absence of God in our culture has not quenched the thirst for God in the human heart. It has only misdirected it. Every human being … longs to be known and to be loved unconditionally. Everyone yearns for authentic happiness.” With the power of the Spirit written in our hearts, Unleash the Gospel calls us to lead all people to the one source of authentic happiness, Jesus Christ.

“O Lord, you have made us for yourself, and our hearts are restless until they find rest in you.” (St. Augustine)

Assistance Needed

In an effort to assure our campus becomes as secure and safe as possible for emergencies of all types, I would like to develop a Security Committee. This committee would walk through the campus and review items both inside and outside that may need to be addressed for safety reasons. If you are a police office, fireman, or have experience with building safety and would be interested in joining this committee, please contact me. The commitment would be two or three meetings to start and then semi-annually for review. Contact me if you are interested or would like more information.

Pilgrims on a Journey continues from page 2

We begin by investing in a more personal and prayerful relationship with God. Starting and ending each day with some time with our God. Asking Him to make His plans for us to become our plans. Asking God for a spirit of cooperation within us. Asking God to show us the paths He’s chosen for our lives by guiding us in our decisions and actions. We don’t fully become who we are meant to be overnight. Who we are, and what becomes of us – normally – comes about as a result of one decision leading toward another decision, and then another… I say “normally” because there are actions and decisions that can have immediate and lasting consequences. Experimenting with a controlled substance can lead to sudden death. Period. Just as running a red-light, or texting while you drive can have the same effect. We are known by the decisions that we make in our lives. Decisions do not build our character…they reveal our character. Let’s pray that God’s character may be revealed through us!

“In the tender compassion of our God the dawn from on high shall break upon us, to shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death, and to guide our feet into the way of peace.” (Luke 1:78-79)

May our God continue to ‘guide our feet into the way of peace.’
