Pastor’s Corner

The Hebrew word for the act of public worship was derived from the word meaning “work.” The people of God were instructed by God to offer worship and sacrifice to God, and it was seen as work. Work means that it is something that requires effort, it is active not passive. Active on the part of the priest in the Old Testament of slaughtering and offering animal sacrifice, and the New Testament offering of the bread and wine that become the sacrifice of Jesus himself. Both sacrifices involve the active act of the priest and the active participation of the people in thinking about the meaning of what is being done. The public worship was meant to include the effort of remembering what God had done for the people and offering thanks to God. Thinking and remembering during worship is definitely work, requiring effort of the mind. When Jesus reveals himself in his transfigured glory, Peter reacts emotionally in wanting to prolong the experience. He hasn’t thought about what it means, he just is focusing on “doing” instead of “listening.” Most of the time physical work is easier than mental work. God the Father has to remind Peter, James and John to focus on listening instead of running around setting up camp. That is a good thought for us this Lent. Perhaps we need to stop being so busy and “listen” to the Lord. That could be our offering of work to the Lord.

Lenten Regulations for Observing the Penitential Season

The penitential season of Lent began on Ash Wednes-day (March 6th) and continues until the evening of Holy Thursday (April 18th). Easter is April 21st this year.

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence.

The norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding from age 14 onwards.

If possible, the fast on Good Friday is continued until the Easter Vigil (on Holy Saturday night) as the "paschal fast" to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus, and to prepare ourselves to share more fully and to celebrate more readily his Resurrection. (USCCB website).

By the threefold discipline of fasting, alms-giving and prayer the Church keeps Lent from Ash Wednesday until the evening of Holy Thursday. All of the faithful and the catechumens should undertake the serious practice of these three traditions. Failure to observe penitential days totally or a substantial number of such days must be considered serious sin. (Denver Catholic 2014)

Lenten Scripture Study: PSALMS

At the heart of the Bible are the Psalms, prayers from God that help us learn to pray. The Holy Spirit inspired them. Israel sang them. Christ himself prayed them, as did our Blessed Mother. These sacred hymns become our heartfelt response to God’s loving and wondrous deeds for us. Their words captivate the imagination and draw us into a deeply personal encounter with God.

Join Jeff Cavins, Sarah Christmyer, and Dr. Tim Gray as they show you how to establish a deeply personal dialogue with God through the Psalms.

Join us for Psalms: The School of Prayer in progress at St. Francis of Assisi which began Tuesday Mar. 5 at 12 – 1:45 and Thursday Mar. 7 at 6:15-8:00, and continues for 11 sessions total.

For more information or to register for the study, fill out a registration form found in the church narthex and drop it in the office mailbox. Cost for materials is $25. Classes involve watching a DVD, discussion groups, and some homework. Contact [email protected] for more information.

We can’t wait to see you!

Religious Ed. Continued

MY CHILD TAKES ART, BASKETBALL, DANCE, SCOUTS, AND PIANO LESSONS. WE DON’T HAVE TIME TO KEEP COMING TO RE, WE ARE TOO BUSY! WHY DO WE HAVE TO KEEP COMING SINCE SHE HAS ALREADY RECEIVED FIRST COMMUNION & CONFIRMATION? Yes, we know that your family can be busy; however, we truly hope your child will continue their religious education long after receiving the sacraments. Your/their faith is a life-long learning process! Set some faith priorities!

BEAUTIFUL FIRST COMMUNION DRESS – We recently received a donation of a brand new, beautiful size 8 white First Communion dress. If your daughter, granddaughter, or know anyone who can use this dress, you are most welcome to have it. Please contact Helen.

PRINT OF THE IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY – If you left a sepia tone picture of the Immaculate Heart of Mary for free on the table by the church, please contact Helen. It’s so beautiful that I would like to order more copies. Thank you!

TODAY’S JOKE – There’s something bigger than money – bills!

CATHOLIC RADIO – 1060 am – KRCN – “Change your station, change your life.” On 2/27 – “Take 2 With Jerry & Debbie” the topic was, “How Does Music Affect Your Life?” Are your choices in music serving you well?

BILL’S ADVENTURES – His small, thin, dark and hand-some stature always made people aware that he was present. Sometimes he didn’t need to say a word. His little mischievous way could either endear him to some-one, or he would be in trouble with them. For instance, the time he and John were on an errand for Mom, when they walked by a display of beautiful apples and the apples somehow ended up on the floor. This was definitely not a good start with him and Mr. Sanchez, the storekeeper.

RE CHALLENGE – Think of a time when you did some-thing and it turned out all wrong.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CALENDAR: March 19/20 – CLASS March 26/27 – NO CLASS – SPRING BREAK!

HELP, HELP! – NEED MEN & WOMEN TO TAKE COMMUNION TO HOMEBOUND – We are once again in need of people willing to take Holy Communion to those who are homebound. If this is in your heart, please call Helen. Training provided.

Contact Tyler Eberle 303-789-0007 x. 2771 [email protected] www.panda-denver.com Looking for a GREAT movie to see with your family? See BREAK-THROUGH, in theaters April 17. I got to see a sneak preview at the FOCUS (Fellowship of Catholic University Students) conference. The entire audience loved it. It may be a bit difficult for young children to watch, but perfect for the rest of us. Rated PG. - Sandy

Divine Mercy continued... If you would like to help with this effort, SHARE this information with anyone who would be interested in helping with the campaign - every year we get new people -THANK YOU. DONATE (early and often!) to pay for the billboards. And most importantly PRAY that the Divine Mercy image and accompanying scripture will touch many hearts with the Good News of salvation in Jesus Christ! To donate, please make checks out to “Divine Mercy Billboards” and send your non-tax-deductible donations to:

Christi Derr PO Box 561

The Divine Mercy campaign is putting up three billboards this year:

14’ X 48’ on Broadway in Denver 10’6" X 22’9" on Hwy. 93 near Boulder

6’ X 12 on Hwy. 287 in Loveland

The total cost for space and production is $3,500.00. We have $1,000 left in the bank from last year. So we have only $2,500 left to collect. Yay!

Where can I eat a vegetarian-style meal during Lent? Eating a simple vegetarian meal at home would be the most sacrificial option, but for those times we

cannot, there are many restaurants where we can find a vegetarian meal. For seafood we carry: Red Lobster, Chili's, Outback, Texas Roadhouse, Red Robin, or TGI Friday's. In a hurry? We

have: McDonald's, Wendy's, Noodles, Panera, Carl's Jr, or Subway. How about vegetarian pizza? We carry Lefty’s, Papa Murphy’s, Pizza Hut, and Old Chicago. Stop by the gift card counter and get your choice today!

Wanting to help the homeless? Do you see our homeless and wonder how to help them? How about taking them out for a meal? We have many gift cards in $10 denominations for restaurants that

would fit the bill. Feeding the hungry and helping the building fund, it’s a win/win situation!
