Ever done those bargains with your future self thatwould be bullying with anyone else? Of course you

have. If you’ve ever owned a credit card you know exactlywhat I’m talking about.

My future, and lessthanpleasedwiththesituation self,is tired. And that’s because late at night I make a bargainthat just for one evening I can survive on less sleepbecause I’m enjoying being awake. I’m not doing anythingmad and crazy. In fact, when I am out at night I’m prettygood at getting back in good time, unless it’s a specialoccasion. It’s the unwindingfrom the day that I savour themost and am most reticent tocut short.

Whether it’s reading, latenight TV, or playing games, it’sa deal I make with my futureself and always regret eighthours later. Stupid past self...

GIRL TALK!

Once there was a time with no mobile phones, no apps,no texting, no emails and no twitter. Angstridden

teenage girls waited with bated breath bythe letterbox for their weekly issue ofJackie Magazine... unless their big sistergot there first! Jackie accompaniedmillions of girls through their teenageyears in the ‘70s and ‘80s, years of boy

trouble, ironing hair and problem solving from residentagony aunts, Cathy and Claire. The magazine supported andinspired those girls and, best of all, it was great fun.

Jackie the Musical revisits those headydays, and tells the story of a fifty

something divorcée whorevisits her stash of

wellthumbedJackie

magazinesfor the samereason she first readthem nearly forty yearsago: advice on how best tonavigate the opposite sex.

The quizzes, the fashion tips, the ‘do’s and don’ts on a firstdate’ and above all the Cathy and Claire problem pages areall devoured eagerly by our plucky heroine Jackie as sherevisits the dizzy world of the teen bible. With her ex and ahandsome new guy both on the scene, the valuable lessonsshe learnt as a girl begin to influence her future and Jackiediscovers the one person in control of her life is – her.

Funny and feisty, with a soundtrack featuring the era’smost beloved and memorable hits, including the sounds ofPop Idols Donny Osmond, David Cassidy and Marc Bolanplayed live on stage, the show promises a whirlwind tour ofPlanet Seventies and a most fabulous night out!

Sussex based actress Janet Dibley plays Jackie. Janetbecame a household name in the 1980s, costarring withNicholas Lyndhurst in ITV’s The Two of Us. Janet joined thecast of the BBC soap Doctors in 2010 as Dr Elaine Cassidy,a role she played for over two years.

Jackie the Musical is by Mike James, with choreographyby Arlene Phillips and directed by Hove based director AnnaLinstrum. www.atgtickets.com/brighton0844 871 7650 Tue 5 – Sat 9 Apr 2016Eves 7.45pmThu & Sat mats 2.30pm

I didn’t really notice him at first. I thought he was goodlooking, but I wouldn’t ever say it was love or even lust at

first sight. To be honest Peyton wasn’t really on my radar. So I really didn’t expect him to ask me to walk with him tothe pub one Friday night. I got a message from him saying:“I don’t really know anyone and I thought I might socialisefor once, can I meet up with you and go to the pubtogether?” Well I wasn’t going to say no.

We met up at the bus stop then walked to meet up withsome more friends, the night became a blur of pub hoppinguntil we made it to a gay bar. I found out that my partyanimal friend, Phil, was also there so I thought that we

should tag along. As a general rule no straight

girl goes to a gay club andexpects to get lucky – ifanything we go there to getaway from all the creepy

drunk guys that hit on us. But it didn’t quite work out theway I expected.

“Hey I think your friend likes me and I’m not gay. Couldyou dance with me?” said Peyton. Not quite like beingasked in the movies but I was too drunk to question himand realise how borderlinehomophobic his request was.

It had been four years since I made out with someone onthe dance floor. Dancing turned into grinding and then intosnogging and I just thought it was a bit of fun. I had plansto take a night bus with my friend back home so goinground Peyton’s wasn’t even an option.

When he left, I got a bus and life went on. Checking myphone in the morning, a text from Peyton read: “Last nightwas fun but I don’t want to mess you about. I’m on a breakwith my girlfriend.” After years of watching Rachel andRoss, I was relieved for the close call.

CAITLINAbout A Girl

How my friends laughed at my first world problemswhen I told them that I had trouble fitting a lobster

into my deep freeze. They were of course right, findingspace for a lobster is somewhat effete after all. But there Iwas with this cooked lobster that I want to use in a fewweeks’ time, and the freezer was chocablock with icelollies and containers of beef ragu, chicken stock and soupsthat I hadmade forfutureconsumption.

I like to planahead and thefreezer is agreat help, especially as Ilive alone. Andas a keen cookthere is alwaystoo much food to eat in one sitting. I can remember givinga gift to a friend years ago and on opening it he declared itto be the most depressing gift he had ever received. I wassurprised as I knew that he liked to cook and the newlypublished Delia Smith ‘One is fun’ seemed ideal. In manyways it was but he also saw it as a declaration of his statusthen and into a very lonely future. I apologised, althoughthirty years on he is still single, so I bet those pages are wellworn by now. Good old Delia!

I find it hard to cook for one so I do what I have alwaysdone and eat too much. No, seriously, I freeze things thatare suitable to freeze, hence the lobster dilemma. It's niceto know that I can delve beneath the choc ices and find alasagne or a pie, and with careful planning I can eat verywell and reduce waste – but not waist!

The Bula Loop, a darkly comic playwritten by Tom J Page (a young

scriptwriter and actor from Eastbourne) isset to perform at this year’s Brighton Fringe. There will also be previews in Eastbourne atthe end of April, and Tom’s script wasinspired by his own personal experience of afamily living with autism.

Glowingly described by the EastbourneHerald as “a sharply observed play wheredomestic bickering masks heartfelt pain”,The Bula Loop is a poignant new comedywhere the central character, Adam, dreamsof travelling the world on a ‘Bula Loop’roundtheworld ticket, but all goes pearshaped when his brother gets there first andannounces his gapyear plans over dinner.

Tom said: “The play began life last Marchwhen I devised a 20minute A levelperformance. The feedback was incredibleand I was encouraged to develop the scriptinto an hourlong play.”

Tom takes the central role of Adam and isaccompanied by professional performers aswell as other fellow drama students. It isdirected and produced by Tim Marriott,Eastbourne College’s Director of Drama andformer stage and television actor bestknown for seven series of the hit BBCsitcom, The Brittas Empire.

Tom Purser, campaigns manager, NationalAutistic Society (NAS), said “Representationsof autism, particularly when inspired bypersonal experience, can help challengemyths and change lives by helping people tounderstand more about this lifelongdevelopmental condition.”The Bula Loop plays at The Printers Playhouse,Eastbourne April 27 – 29, 7.45pm,www.printersplayhouse.co.uk before it headsto the Brighton Fringe, St Andrews Church,Hove, May 5 – 8 at 6pm. With the house music revival continuing, thanks to thelikes of Disclosure, Rudimental and Hannah Wants,

London's Disciples were catapulted to the forefront of thenew wave thanks to their hook up with Calvin Harris, andthe smash hit ‘How Deep Is Your Love’ (430m Youtubeviews…) of last year. "Me and Gavin are published by FlyEye, a publishing company owned by Calvin Harris," saysLuke Anthony McDermott, one third of Disciples.

"He asked us to sendhim some music, includinga rough mix of ‘How DeepIs Your Love’, to see whathis thoughts were andwhere we could take thetrack, because it was quitemellow at the time. Hesaid he had a few ideas…" Indeed, and with theunstoppable Harris juggernaut behind the hit, it was all butinevitable that Disciples would climb up a few more rungs.

Along with Nathan V Duvall and Gavin HarrymanKoolmon, the trio have been developing the live show, which they are taking out on the road for a short UK tour. How does it work as a trio? "We all do the same thing; weall DJ, we all produce, we all songwriter. As a team we bangheads all the time, but that's how the magic works. Youhave too many ideas on a page, then you have to take awayuntil it sounds perfect. I always say three heads are betterthan one.

"For the live show, we'll be DJing and there will beinstruments. We'll have special guests with us, singers. Butit will be mainly us three. It'll be DJ orientated, but using alot of electronics, a lot of Ableton gear, programmed stuff, using instruments synced in. We're putting in a load of ourown money to make sure we put on a good show."Concorde 2, Wed 6 April, 7.30pm, £10

I’m very happy to highlight a great opportunity to imbibesome sublime art in an affordable, accessible way.

Anthony Minghella's production of Puccini's MadamaButterfly at New York's Metropolitan Opera is beingstreamed live to cinemas in HD this Saturday evening.Event cinema has been steadily growing in popularity overthe last 10 years and having tried it myself I can heartilyrecommend it.

I saw Boris Godunovstreamed live from the RoyalOpera House last week; mychums wouldn't have wantedto splash out for the train fareand tickets for the real thing,so it was a fun, convenientway to witness Bryn Terfel'slustrous bassbaritone. The cinema was still atmospheric(sold out with a friendly crowd), it cost under £20 and I washome before 10.15pm.

The Met Opera is one of the world's most revered operahouses, and Minghella's production (premiered in 2006) isin fact renowned for cinematic visuals, featuring “visualrichness” and “striking spectral puppeteers” according tobachtrack.com. This version drew praise from the New YorkTimes for conductor Karel Mark Chichon's performancewhich “kept the drama flowing inexorably forward withoutstinting on Puccini’s lushness.”

Puccini deals in highly emotional drama with beautifulmelodies so this would serve as a fine firsteveropera. Thisscreening is therefore an easy way to broaden one'shorizons this weekend, or to see a new interpretation ofthe hugely popular opera if you are a fan already.Met Opera: Madama Butterfly HD Live stream, Saturday 2 April, 5.55pm, Duke's At Komedia £8£30Cineworld, Eastbourne, £14.20 to £19.50

BRIGHTON’S ARTY

We’re big fans of theOpen Market on

London Road. And a goodreason to head down thereis to discoverthewonderfulwork of 3Dartist AlisonMcGechie. She’s basedin her studioon the concourse, whereshe creates carvings inwood and stone as well assculptural forms and

functional vessels inceramic.

As you can see, her fluid, sensuous pieces are the

product of a lifelongfascination with the humanfigure, realised through her‘handson’ response to the

organic materials she uses. Alison is just one of the

talented local artists andmakers who feature in Art inBrighton 2016. And I’m sureshe won’t mind me giving amention to CaptureFactory, the brilliantphotography studio we’vediscovered during thecourse of putting togetherthis year’s art book, as theydid such an amazing jobbringing her pieces to life

through a lens. You can findthem in BeaconsfieldStudios. www.artymagazines.com
