Pastor’s Corner

In religious circles there is a question that always deserves deep reflection, “How much would I be willing to give up to get to heaven?” I mentioned a few weeks ago that there seems to be at least one thing that each of us clings to that keeps us from allowing God’s grace to fill us completely. It might be an attitude such as pride or stubbornness, or it might be an attachment to something such as money or material goods. Each day on our journey of life each of us will encounter an opportunity to reflect on what is the most important thing that is keeping me from being the shining child of God that God invites me to be. The rich young man in the gospel loved Jesus and the idea of listening to Him, until he was challenged to give up everything and follow Jesus. He was willing to be a disciple but wanted to remain rich as well. It’s not that wealth in and of itself keeps us from God, it is putting our wealth (or something else) before God. Some people can have wealth and not be negatively affected by it but for many the temptation to rely on wealth and things to give us security and happiness can lead to sin and loss of heaven. In hope I like to think that perhaps the young man had a change of heart after he reflected on his attachment to wealth and turned back to Jesus. It is indeed proper that parents make financial plans for the good of their families but they should always acknowledge that God is the source of all gifts. Sometimes God will ask us to let go of all of our plans and trust in Him to demonstrate our faith. Anyone can be a disciple when everything is going well, when we are warm and well fed. But could we be a disciple under persecution or when everything is lost? Think of the people who have suffered through a hurricane or earthquake – many of them have learned that it is the love of people for one another that is the most important thing we need. The gift of Wisdom helps us to understand the proper place for everything in God’s creation. But when times are tough and we are afraid it is easy to be deceived into trusting in money as the solution to our troubles. Ironically, the very fear of not having “enough” actually prevents us from receiving God’s spiritual wealth, grace. Let us pray for a detachment from relying on the “things” of life and instead grow in trusting in God in good times and in bad. If we do this we will always have enough Good. Amen!

BRINGING COMMUNION TO THE HOMEBOUND AND NURSING HOMES: If you or a loved one are unable to come to Mass, or are in a care facility, we have wonderful ministers who would be happy to bring Holy Communion to you, whether it is for a short term, or longer term. We are here for you! Ways we have ministered: We have given hope to those going through a crisis, we have given families comfort, and brought the love and strength of Jesus to the weary; and have prayed with someone who was dying. Please call Helen Herman for a Communion Minister to visit you. 4

Agape Safe Haven As we prepare for the winter season the staff and volunteers at

Agape Safe Haven have been reflect-ing upon the fact that "We Are All God's Children". Each one of us, no matter our life's circumstances, is a child of God and beloved by Him. Won't you help Agape Safe Haven bring dignity and hope to the homeless guests we serve?

We are a Christian Organization that w o r k s w i t h o u r H o m e l e s s Guests. Our goal has always been to

be a 'HANDS UP’ ministry. Our goal is to be GOD’S good stewards. Isn’t that what He calls us to do?

This is our 3rd Season and we have had wonderful results…

We are in immediate need of donations like plain t shirts, men’s and women’s undergarments, socks, and thermal underwear. In addition, we would appreciate donations of coffee and household cleaning supplies. Please place these items in the appropriate box in the Narthex. Do you have an extra hour or two during the week? We are in such need of Volunteers. Agape Safe Haven does not receive State or City funding. Contact our Volunteer Coordinator, Michele McCracken at 303-564-0696. Also, please go to our website-agapesafehaven.org

-perishable foods like canned soups, vegetables, and fruits, canned tuna and chicken, dry pasta, boxed macaroni and cheese dinners, peanut butter, and the like. Disposable diapers are also in great demand. The Food Bank assists over 200 families and individu-als each week in meeting basic nutritional needs. Last spring, the parishioners of St. Francis donated 2,256 pounds of food, 160 pounds of disposable diapers, and $85.00 in cash to the Food Bank; your continuing generosity is greatly appreciated!

A copy of your child’s Baptism Certificate is required to register for a Sacramental class. Please help us by registering early.

CATHOLIC RADIO – 1060 am – KRCN – “Change your station, change your life.” On 10/4 at 10 am, the topic on “Take 2 With Jerry & Debbie” was “Have You Sat at the Bedside of a Dying Person? Did You Do Something to Help Them Get to Heaven?” – You can always listen to a replay at 10 pm, or go to their website. (Can you tell this is my favorite pro-gram?)

TODAY’S JOKE – Andy: I read in the newspa-per that Scarecrow won the Nobel Prize.

Aloysius: Yes, because he was outstanding in his field!

CHURCH ATTIRE REMINDER: Did you know that you are a temple of the Holy Spirit? You’ll never regret dressing appropriately with modesty & humility. Be brave, be a leader – please dress reverently when you come to spend time with our Lord, Jesus Christ! Thank you! Do your jeans have glitter on the back pockets? This scratches the wooden pews. Please save such jeans for another time.

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd: Catechesis of the Good Shepherd started last week. The program has had tremendous support from our parish and I wanted to make sure to thank 2 very special businesses for their help. Longmont Florist is providing flowers each week so that the children can put arrangements on our prayer table. This is the most important

area of our atrium (classroom) and where the children begin and end each session. The children love creating something beautiful to display and take great pride in their work. St. John’s Food Bank is providing a walking break-fast for our CGS children on Sundays so that they can quickly fill their bellies and attend 10am mass with their families. Thank you so much Longmont Florist and St. John’s Food Bank!!! If you are interested in helping our program, contact Julia at 310-409-5701 or [email protected].

MUMS (Mothers Uplifting Mothers Spiritually) is in need of babysitting help! We are looking for adults to care for our children two mornings a month. The time and care you give will be a critical piece in the success of this important ministry for women. You would be needed the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of each month 8:45-11:00 am through May at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. These are paid positions.

OUR Center Lunch: Please call Cece @ 303-682-1032 if you can help serve on Oct. 20th. We purchase the food, prepare and serve. We are there from 10:30—2:00. Thank you.

Is abortion rare? Not with 6 in a week at one clinic in one American town. Please join us for the campaign, in peaceful witness at the clinic, with your prayers and fast-ing. Please visit the 40 Days for Life daily blogs for updates on the international campaign – how God is changing hearts and minds.

If you’ve been wondering how you can share your gifts with the Church, especially with high school young ladies, please contact Sandy Gross at [email protected]. As always, training and support are provided! The best way to learn your faith is to pass it on to others!

Thank you to Tim Medearis, Ethan Brandt, Jonah Martinez, Rachel Riley, Terri Monahan-Mitchell, Karen Simmons, Maddie Brandt and Hoa Nguyen for hearing the call to ministry! If you or someone you know is interested in being part of a YDisciple group, please let me know. I can put girls on a waiting list at this time. I can accept 3 more guys at this time.

YDisciple is a mentor-intensive discipleship group where youth meet once a week with their friends and two mentors to discuss their faith and get to know one an-other on a deeper level. Each group determines its own meeting time and place. YDis-ciple groups use the YDisciple program on FORMED and the SUMMIT Scripture study program. Every 6 weeks YDisciple groups gather for service projects, mini-retreats, or fun outings. Space for YDisciple is very limited, so register soon. Parent involvement is a must. Parents provide snacks and places to meet in their homes. Parents also help us locate new mentors for new groups. YDisciple will continue to add new groups through-out the year as new mentors are trained. All registration forms are online and in the lobby. We now have a waiting list for girls and 3 spots available for boys. Registration is $25. Contact [email protected] to sign up youth and recommend mentors.

The EDGE Middle School Youth Group is open to grades 6 – 8. We meet on Wednesday nights from 6-7:30. EDGE is filled with fun activities, games, praise and worship experiences, small group discussions, teaching elements, and a special opportu-nity to "Put on the Armor of Christ". The Armor program has different challenges for the youth to accomplish on their own in order to earn medals. At EDGE, St. Francis youth will make friendships with each other and with Jesus

Christ. Our goal is to encourage youth to develop a daily prayer time, Scripture study, and an appreciation for the Sacraments so they will remain disciples of Christ throughout their lifetime. Retreats will be offered in the Spring.

To join Edge, please fill out a registration form and return it to the parish office. Forms are online and in the church narthex. Registration is $25.

There will be NO EDGE on Oct. 31 or Nov 21. Nov. 28 is our last meeting in 2018.

Sacraments grades 6-12 Why: The teen Sacrament program is here to help you became a Saint and know and love the Lord for a lifetime and beyond. What else is there?! Who: All Catholics in grades 6 -12 who need the Sacraments of 1st Communion and/or Confirmation. What you need to do: Sacramental Prep classes at St. Francis are two-year programs. Therefore, youth who desire First Communion as well as Confirmation need to participate in two years of youth group and one year of monthly Sacrament classes. They can take their Sacramental prep class during their second year. Those who only need the Sacrament of Confirmation have already attended classes for

their previous sacraments, so they will meet the 2-year requirement with one year of youth group and the monthly Sacrament prep classes. These can be done during the same year. When: Classes are the first Tuesday of the month with home assignments, 6:15-7:30. Starting Oct. 2 and ending April 30. How: Registration forms for grades 6-12 can be found in the lobby and online. Fill out a form and put it in the office mailbox downstairs. Registration is $65.
