A number of practices from the early Church converged over time to shape what we know today as Lent. From the begin-ning of the Church's liturgical practice, Easter was the central feast. Easter was later stretched to include Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday (Sacred Triduum) - under-stood as one unified celebration of the mystery of Christ's saving passion, death and resurrection (the Paschal Mystery). By the third century a period of preparation for Easter included penance and a strengthening of virtue and prayer and the whole of spiritual life. Fasting was an integral part of this preparation period. The fasting was seen as a discipline that could aid one in the war against sin. Fasting heightened the senses: if you were going to do battle against evil, you had best put your senses on alert. By the end of the fourth century, Lent had become a forty-day period, reminiscent of the forty days that Jesus spent in the desert.

Another component in the evolving season of Lent was the reconciliation of public sinners who were excluded from the community at the beginning of Lent. By the seventh century a more rigorous discipline for penitents was observed and the practice of imposing ashes upon them arose. Before they were admitted to the Eucharistic Table on Holy Thursday, they had to publicly acknowledge their fallen status and reform their lives by public penance. Because their public penance had a profound effect on the entire community's sense of sin, the practice gradually arose of marking the heads of all the faithful at the beginning of Lent. Pope Urban II recommended this practice for the universal Church in 1091.

The most significant factor in the shaping of Lent was the preparation of cate-chumens for Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist at the Easter Vigil. By the late fourth century, Lent had become an period of intense prayer, preaching and formation directed to the catechumens in the hope of purifying them of their former way of life and strengthening

them for the rigors of the Christian life. There was a clear expectation of a conversion of mind. A sponsor had to vouch for the catechumen's sincerity of faith and readiness for discipleship before he/she would be accepted for Bap-tism. Some of the liturgical prayers and the selection of scriptures introduced at that time can still be found in today's Lenten liturgies. For example, the classic three Gospels in Cycle A of the woman at the Well, The Man Born Blind, and the Raising of Lazarus-thought to be an early Church baptismal catechesis-are still dominant features of Lent today.

If we look at all the elements that have been part of the Church's Lent in the past, we can see how these elements came together to form our experience of Lent today. The reforms of the Second Vatican Council called us back to the basics. That meant a rediscovery of the Sacred Triduum as the hinge upon which all the rest of the liturgical year swings. We must rediscover Easter as the tap root of our Christian spirituality. We pass-over from sin to grace, from death to life, and are made ready for our journey back to God. In the liturgy of the Triduum we celebrate Christ's Passover from death to life, from this life to the Father. In Baptism we do the same.

The presence of catechumens during Lent is always a gift to the community because their journey to the baptismal font poignantly reminds us that we must walk in the same direction, retracing the path of our own conversion and ready-ing ourselves for solemnly renewing our baptismal vows at Easter. Catechu-mens walk to the Font and Table to bury their old selves in the tomb with Christ, to rise with him as new creatures and share the banquet of the victori-ous Lamb of God. We move to the Font and Eucharistic Table in the footsteps of the catechumens in the hope of correcting our sinful habits and returning to or relearning normative Christian behavior.

When we come to the Font and respond, "I DO," we proclaim to all the world who we are and to whom we belong. Catechumens and veteran Christians look to the Font as the womb of Mother Church, the source of our life and in-heritance in Christ. We look to the Eucharistic Table where Christ invites us to drink of the cup he drinks -to share in his life and death, his rising and passing over to the Father.

Where Did Lent Come From?

For Reflection and Action • How will you prepare to renew your Baptismal vows at Easter? • Lent is a good time to invite Catholics who have been distant from the

Church back home. Who will you reach out to?

Lenten Regulations Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and absti-nence. The Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence.

Abstinence means no meat at any meal for those ages 14 and older.

To fast means 1 full meal and 2 smaller meals and nothing to eat between meals for those 18 through 59 years of age.

The Lenten practices of prayer, fasting and doing works of charity (almsgiving) are encouraged for all Catholics.

Sharing Parish Corner You are cordially invited to join Most Blessed Trinity parish for a Lenten Mission on April 4, 5 and 6, 2011 at our Queen of Peace site. The mis-sion will start at 5:30 PM and end with a light sup-per each day. Our mission will be led by Fr. Robert Dufford, SJ, and will feature a communal healing service and conclude with a celebration of

Mass. As a sharing parish that works so closely with us in our various outreach programs and provides financial support, it is our pleasure to have you join us for this mission experience. Fr. Robert Dufford, SJ Father Bob Dufford is a member of the Wisconsin Province of the So-ciety of Jesus. He is one of the original members of the St Louis Jesu-its, whose music is well-known and found in many parish hymnals. Fr. Dufford has worked as a campus minister at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska and as an internationally acclaimed composer of liturgical music. He began composing music over 20 years ago as a member of the St. Louis Jesuits. He has also served as a well-known and respected Spiritual Director for 15 years at the Jesuit retreat house in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. He currently resides in Omaha where he heads two small parishes and serves at the spirituality center of Creighton University. We are honored and fortunate to have Fr. Duf-ford, SJ preside over our Lenten mission at Most Blessed Trinity.

Fr. Dan Hartnett, SJ

Frassati Academy will team with Sacred Heart Parish in Winnetka, to undertake a Lenten project by collecting new and gently used shoes for the residents of Sassier, Haiti. The collected shoes will be sent to St. Jean Baptiste Parish in Haiti and will provide shoes for the people of southwest Haiti, many who may oftentimes go a life-time without ever owning a pair of shoes. When walking is the only means of getting from one place to another, shoes can be a very welcome commodity. The Outreach/Support ministry of St. Mary, which hopes to soon develop an actual presence in Haiti, will act as a conduit to facilitate the transfer of the donated shoes from Frassati Academy to Sacred Heart Parish. Please pray for the success of this shoe drive and for the people of Haiti. If you know a Frassati Academy student, please offer to give them some gently used shoes (any kind except boots, it doesn’t snow in Haiti) that they may bring to their collection point. Additional information about this pro-ject may be obtained from Deacon Gary Kupsak at (847) 791-5285 or [email protected].

Fourth Graders Make History St. Mary of the Annunciation School students became the first class at their school to Skype when they used this technology recently to interact with students at St. Walter Catholic School on Chicago’s south side. The fourth graders at each school began by introducing

themselves, which was projected in the school library for the class to observe. Following, several of St. Mary School students shared their class reports, models and Power Point on Niagara Falls, the Appala-chian Mountain Range and Ellis Island, New York. Students shared information and rules about games they designed to help players learn about Niagara Falls and the Appalachian Mountains. “This type of real-time interaction allows St. Mary students to connect with others – be it across town or eventually around the world – in a unique learning opportunity,” said Ms. Eileen Sullivan, principal at St. Mary School. “Children are especially engaged in the learning process when they explore a topic and learn from each other. The students embrace new learning methods that can spark their curiosity and pro-vide tools for research and learning.” Ms. Sullivan added, “When I see our fourth graders making seven minute presentations with Power Point slides that they have created or sharing a video that they have produced with a team of their peers, I know that we are making strides in Catholic education to equip our students with the skills they need for their future academic careers and beyond. We are leading the way for our children to succeed in the 21st century.”

Journeying Through the Desert As we enter the desert of Lent together, Jesus shows us that to live fully the life of God has given us, we must obey His Commandments and follow the Holy Spirit. Just as we are called to care for the gift of our eternal life, we are also called to care for the gift of God’s creation. Catholic Relief Services’ Operation Rice Bowl supports programs in Haiti and around the world that teach farmers effective and ecol-ogically sensitive growing methods which allow them to get the most out of their land while preserving it for future gen-erations.

Did You Take Your Rice Bowl? This Lent St. Mary Parish will participate in Operation Rice Bowl, a program organized by Catholic Relief Services that has been provid-ing assistance all over the world for more than 30 years.

Each year, Operation Rice Bowl invites us to pray with our families and faith communities; fast in solidarity with those who hunger; learn more about our global community and the challenges of poverty over-seas; and give sacrificial contributions to those in need.

Each Lent, nearly 13,000 faith communities across the United States participate to demonstrate solidarity with the poor around the world. Seventy-five percent of Operation Rice Bowl donations come to CRS to help fund development programs designed to increase food secu-rity around the world. Twenty-five percent of the donations support hunger and poverty alleviation efforts in dioceses within the United States. You’ll find much more information, Family activities, prayers, and in-spiration at the Operation Rice Bowl website: http://orb.crs.org.

CD of the Month “Change the World in 60 Seconds”

by Tom Peterson

Tom Peterson was an award winning national advertising executive, but lukewarm in his faith. Then, in 1997, he attended a Catholic men’s retreat. While praying before the Blessed Sacrament, he experienced a profound spiritual transformation and a clear vocational calling. God was inviting him to use his talents in television media for a greater good... to evangelize the world. Soon after, Peterson founded Cathol-icsComeHome.org and VirtueMedia.org, two educational non-profit media apostolates that promote evangelization and the sanctity of life. The sites are helping hundreds or thousand of souls come home to the Catholic Church. In this motivating presentation, Tom shares how just 60 seconds can truly change the world, often one life at a time. Please remember a $3 donation per CD is suggested to allow the

parish to continue the program and offer new material.
