The Foundation continues to have a substantial impact on campus by funneling parent donations directly into classrooms and putting much needed supplies, state of the art equipment and learning materials into the hands of all students school wide.
The most recent purchase was an additional 160 Chromebook computers with four more storage/charging carts for use across campus. The computers are available to all teachers and can be signed out through the Learning Commons on an as needed basis to supplement coursework.
“We appreciate the support of the TPHS Foundation and their willingness, speed and flexibility to effectively meet the needs of all our students and help them find success,” states TPHS Assistant Principal Michael Santos. “The generous financial support of our parent community this year is unprecedented and the positive impact of that support is being felt in all classrooms from one end of campus to the other.”
According to Santos the computers will be used differently across all departments. For example, science classes can use them to collaborate on data, English classes to help students research, write and edit their essays, social sciences for research and making connections from the text book to current events, PE classes can use them for online fitness programming, and elective classes can use them to research, create and deliver in-class presentations.
In addition to providing cutting edge technology and learning materials for classrooms, the Foundation provides funding for programs which increase student independence and help develop leadership and social skills through PALS (Peer Assistance Leadership Support), FalconFest, mentoring programs, and the AVID college prep program.
If you would like to support the Foundation’s efforts, please go to the website at torreypinesfoundation.org for information on the TP Education Fund and the programs and projects it supports or to make an online tax deductible donation. An informational flyer can also be found on pages 12 and 13 of this newsletter.

ONLINE GRAD NITE REGISTRATION IS OPEN Online registration is now open for the 2017 TPHS Grad Nite at Dave & Busters in Mission Valley on Friday, June 16. The new paperless process should be easy to navigate with the all information, registration and payment online and in one place. Just head to torreypinesfoundation.org and click on “Register for Events” and then click the Grad Nite flyer to be taken to the registration page.
An early-bird discount of $120 is in effect now until April 30. The price goes up to $140 after that date and registration closes June 1.
Night-long activities will include an illusionist show, five hours of DJ entertainment and dancing. Each grad will receive a loaded $50 Power Card for use on any redemption or prize games and will have unlimited access to all other video games. There will also be board games, Giant Jenga and more so that lines and boredom are not an issue.
Grads will also enjoy an extensive buffet including a mac and cheese station, pizza bites, burgers, pretzel dogs, salads, fresh fruit and unlimited sodas and water. Mini cheesecakes, brownies and cookies will round out the dessert menu. To keep the grads going in the early hours, warm bagels, mini danish and muffins will be served before they head home.
If you would like to purchase a lei for the TPHS graduation ceremony for your graduate, you can do that on the website as well as part of the registration process. Leis will be delivered to the students at graduation check in on June 10.
Grad Nite runs from 11 PM on Friday and ends at 5 AM Saturday morning. Graduates will check in at the Torrey Pines High School gym beginning at 10 PM on Friday and will be bussed to Dave & Busters. Busses will return to TP at 5 AM Saturday.
Why Grad Nite? Studies have shown that post-graduation events like this save lives by providing a fun, cool and safe alternative to other celebrations.
High school graduation is statistically one of the most dangerous nights in young peoples’ lives. Attending a chaperoned all-night celebration keeps them safer than if they were out and about with their friends unsupervised.
WE WILL NEED PARENT VOLUNTEERS for this event. If you would like to help with check in at TPHS or to attend the event with the graduates as an all-night chaperone, please email [email protected].

TPHS STUDENTS COMPETE AT J-CAP
Students in Ms. Umabe’s Japanese class competed in J-CAP (Japanese Culture and Academic Proficiency) with Level II teams taking 1st and 3rd place, Level III team taking 2nd place, and Level IV team also earning a 2nd place finish in their respective categories.
The goal of the J-CAP program is to reward and encourage the study of the Japanese language and culture by offering a full day of challenging and
enjoyable competitions for high school aged students.
Teams of students compete in activities that test their knowledge of facts and communication skills. J-CAP also celebrates the study of Japanese through experiential learning, interactions with students from other schools, and Japanese cultural presentations when students are not competing.
MOCK TRIAL STUDENTS STATE THEIR CASE
Last month, our Mock Trial students placed ninth out of 29 teams in the San Diego Mock Trial Com-petition, a statewide academic contest in which high school students compete at the county and state lev-el and potentially move onto statewide competition.
Over 500 students participated in San Diego County and over 8,000 students statewide. The trial itself is a simulation of a criminal case in which students portray principals in the array of courtroom participants. Student teams study a hypothetical criminal case, conduct legal research, and receive guidance from volunteer attorney coaches in courtroom procedures and trial prepara-
tion. Students participate as lawyers, witnesses, court clerks, and bailiffs, thus acquiring a working knowledge of our judicial system. The competition develops their analytical abilities and communica-tion skills while they gain increased self-confidence.

2017 TPHS YELLOW RIBBON WEEK
The TPHS PALS (Peer Assistance Leadership Support) is sponsoring Yellow Ribbon Week on campus next week. TPHS will be adorned with hundreds of yellow ribbons and informational posters. Snapchat filters and seven decorated “Selfie Stations” will be located in Building B for students to share with their friends. Activities throughout the week will focus on suicide prevention and the importance of reaching out for help when things get tough or when teens feel lost, alone or hopeless.
On Wednesday, March 15th, there will be an all-campus assembly entitled “Ending the Silence” lead by the National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI).
This assembly will be a powerful tool to help students learn the warning signs and open a dialog with peers, parents or professionals about suicide prevention and mental health issues. “These important discussions will surely change and possibly save lives now or in the future,” states Don Collins, PALS advisor.
“Ending the Silence” will include a PowerPoint presentation along with videos and young adult
speakers. “A group of students and I previewed the presentation and we were moved by the speakers and feel very positive about the content and its value,” says Collins.
Statistics suggest one in five people will develop mental illness during their lifetime and most will take eight to 10 years to seek out help and support. “These presentations could help change that time frame and drastically reduce the suffering mental illness can create, “ Collins continues.
For more information on NAMI and it’s programs or to get involved with the San Diego chapter, visit www.namisandiego.org.
The TPHS PALS program is supported by the TP Education Fund through the TPHS Foundation. PALS is a student leadership program which seeks to promote kindness, provide training to students in resiliency strategies and help combat problems such as violence, bullying, alienation, drug or alcohol abuse, teen pregnancy and school dropout by providing resources, support, and peer counseling to our Falcons.
2017 SDUHSD COLLEGE NIGHT AND FAIR
The 6th Annual SDUHSD College Night and Fair is coming up on Monday, April 24 from 6:30 to 9:00 PM at the Del Mar Fairgrounds in O’Brien Hall. Admission is free for all SDUHSD families.
Over 200 colleges and universities from across the nation have already signed up and will be accompanied by ACT/SAT test prep companies, financial aid organizations and college essay coaches to meet with you and your student. There will be three college led information sessions offered throughout the evening addressing topics such as “UC Admissions,” “College Major Choice,” and “Insider’s View to College Admissions.”
This is a great opportunity to meet with many different college representatives under one roof and learn in depth information about specific colleges, their campuses and the programs they offer.
Last year about 3,000 people attended the event and with a record number of schools and college prep oriented companies already signed up, attendance should be brisk again this year.
