Coats of arms of the Maramures county (Romania)

Maramures means a universe, which most naturally blends the archaism of villages and of

the people with the purity of nature, life in a magical ceremonial. A land of mysteries, with

legends about women who come from a different realm and appear during the day in the glades

of thee woods, with carols that sound as if the earth was mounting towards the sky, with people

clad in a many colored attire.

The attraction of this land is matchless and its secret moral support lies in the local people.you are welcomed in their houses with both respect and dignity.

A picturesque place always benefits from the quality of opening new roads towards otherpicturesque areas. Borsa is such a settlement; this is a balneary resort but its position at the foot

of Rodnei Mountains has endowed it with the privilege of benefiting from an extremely

spectacular scenery. Moreover, the visitor who travels on the mountain paths can make attractive

ascents, such as that to the Pietrosu peak (2305 m. high) a zone where an interesting natural

reserve can be found. But before reaching it, he can admire the Horses Waterfalls.

The state of amazement never quits you, even for a minute , and even less than that whenyou become acquainted with the fabulous images acquired by the wood. This land has been

called , until quite recently , the Land of Wood.

The woods have obviously a soul and by seeing them you become aware of the warmth of

the wood, as a genuine poem.

The land of Maramures is definitely a large open air museum of wooden churches. Many

of them have been declared historical monuments.

The church of Surdesti, with its 54 m. high arrow like spire, is definitely a masterpiece of

the genre. The edifice, quite impressive in terms of the technical ingeniousness and the beauty of

the wood carved decoration, is dedicated to the Saint Archangels. This old church, made of

evergreen oak beams, was erected in 1724.

One of the loveliest faces of faith and wood can be found in Barsana. The 57 m. high church

of Barsana monastery ranks first among the wooden construction of Romania.

The foundation work was started in 1993 and by now the church is one of the most beautiful

structure made by peasants in the country.

The monastery, along its holly and artistic qualities has a great homing facility, telephone,

internet and many other great features.

Quite close to Sighetu Mamatiei only 12 km. separate them is the village of Sapanta,

famous all over the world for its Merry Cemetery. This is, maybe, the unique place in the world

where death has been seemingly defeated by laughter: a local craftsman, Ion Stan Patras, carved

wooden crosses, dyed them in a blue color and added humorous epitaphs.

    About 27 september 2009

Are meeting in Baia Mare was between 25-27 september 2009 and I want to writte aboutour Intercultural Presentation of our region Maramure .

On the 27.09. 2009 we visited very nice places from Maramure and I want to show

Our fours stop was at the Wooden Curch from urde ti. The Maramure wooden churches

in Northern Transylvaniaare a selection of eight examples of differentarchitectural solutions

from different periods and areas. They are OrthodoxorRomanian Greek-Catholic churches.

They are high timber constructions with characteristic tall, slimbell towersat the western end of

the building. They are a particularvernacularexpression of the cultural landscape of this

    mountainous area of northern Romania.

In Maramure today 42 wooden churches remain, about one third of their total two centuries ago.

Besides the extant wooden churches, a major source of knowledge is still saved by a number of

practicing senior carpenters with relevant knowledge and skills in traditional carpentry.

After we finished visiting the Wooden Curchis we had have lunch in Sighetul Marmatiei.

After lunch we had done a last stop at the Happy Merry Cemetery at Spn a.

The Merry Cemetery (Romania: Cimitirul Vesel) is a cemetery in the village of Spna,

Maramure county, Romania. It is famous for its colourful tombstones with nave paintings

describing, in an original and poetic manner, the persons that are buried there as well as scenes

from their lives. The Merry Cemetery became an open-air museum and a national tourist

    attraction.

The unusual feature of this cemetery is that it diverges from the prevalent belief, culturallyshared within European societies a belief that views death as something indelibly solemn.Connections with the local Dacian culture have been made, a culture whose philosophical tenets

presumably vouched for the immortality of the soul and the belief that death was a moment filledwith joy and anticipation for a better life. The cemetery's origins are linked with the name ofStan Ioan Ptra, a local artist who sculpted the first tombstone crosses. In 1935, Ptra carvedthe first epitaph and, as of 1960s, more than 800 of such oak wood crosses came into sight. Theinscription on his tombstone cross says:

Oh, my poor WorldBecause It was hard living in it

    Funny epitaphs
