We feel sure you will find it interesting. This booklet has been prepared especially for your use on the train. It gives you interesting information about the places you pass through and tells you what to look for as you ride along. The descriptive sequence is from Portland south. If you are traveling north you can follow your trip by starting from the back of the booklet. The Shasta Route of Southern Pacific begins at Portland, Oregon and extends to San Francisco, California, a distance of 718 miles. The highest altitude (5,063 ft.) is attained at Grass Lake, Calif. The Shasta Route was completed and placed in operation in 1887. In 1927, forty years later, a new line was constructed between Eugene, Oregon and Black Butte, Calif. over the Cascade Mountains, joining the original line at those points. The original line, now known as the Siskiyou Line of the Shasta Route, serves an historic section of Oregon, rich in interest. It is a beautiful region scenically and has many attractive qualities as a place to live. Its communities are served by trains from Portland and from San Francisco. The new line, called the Cascade Line of the Shasta Route, is 23 miles shorter than the original route and has easier grades. It is used by all Shasta Route through trains. At San Francisco, Shasta Route trains connect with Overland Route trains to the East via Ogden, Utah. At Los Angeles, connection is made with Golden State Route trains to Chicago, via El Paso, Texas, and Sunset Route trains to New Orleans through the old South. At Portland, Shasta Route trains connect with trains to the north and east via northern railroads. The city, first settled in 1843, lies on both sides of the Willamette River, 12 miles south of its confluence with the Columbia. One of the nation's important fresh-water ports and a port of entry, Portland is terminus for a large number of steamship lines, and is the wholesale and retail distribution point for a wide agricul- tural and lumbering region. It is fa- mous for its Rose Festival, held an- nually in June. From Council Crest (1073 ft.), Portland Heights, and other terraced residential districts may be seen a wonderful panorama of snow-capped mountain peaks on the skyline. Mt. Hood (11,245 ft.); Mt. St. Helens (9,761 ft.); Mt. Adams (12,326 ft.); Mt. Rainier (14,408 ft.); and Mt. Jefferson (10,- 350 ft.) are all visible, while the courses of the Columbia and Willam- ette rivers may be traced for miles. The world-famous Columbia River Highway begins here, with its un- surpassed vistas of mountains, for- est, river, and graceful waterfalls. Leaving Portland, you cross to the east side of the Willamette River. As the city is left behind, Reed Col- lege and a municipal golf course are seen to the east, while to the west rise the wooded heights of Council Crest. Just before reaching CLACKA- MAS station, your train passes the rifle range of the Oregon National Guard. A mile beyond Clackamas

Royal Chinook salmon, weigh-ing 30 to 50 pounds, are taken belowthe fal ls w i th rod, reel, and spoon.The annual migration of lamprey eelsup the r iver f rom M a y t o Ju l y a t -tracts much attention. Beyond themills, locks provide f o r navigat ionon t h e upper i v e r . T h e huge log

trafts seen in the Wil lamette here areevidence t h a t y o u are now i n t h egreat lumbering country o f the Pa-cific Nor thwest . T h e home o f D r .John McLoughl in, bu i l t i n 1829, ispreserved as a memorial of a notablepioneer, o f ten referred t o as " t h efather of Oregon." Wi th in this housemany o f the learly state laws wereframed. The first Protestant churchand the f irst Masonic lodge west o fthe Rockies 'vere established here.

The town of CANBY ( A l t . 151 f t . )lies 8 miles beyond Oregon C i t y. I tis the trade center o f a fert i le bu lband f l a x g row ing region. miles far ther the Pudding R ive r iscrossed and you enter AURORA (A l t .119 f t .) , established in the 1850's asa commune by a par ty o f Germans.The commune lasted f o r about 25years when the younger generation,wi th different ideals, brought aboutthe dissolution of the commune andthe re-organization of the village onAmerican principles. Sou th o f A u -rora are extensive hop fields.

HUBBARD (Alt. 182 ft.), a small vi l -lage 4 miles south o f Aurora, is thetrading center fo r an area growingblackberries, loganberr ies, y o u n g -berries, strawberries, a n d raspber-ries. Four miles south of Hubbard isWOODBURN (Alt. 182 ft.), also a berry-raising d is t r i c t , operat ing a la rgecannery. Bulb culture is also carriedon in this area. Three miles beyondWoodburn you pass GERVAIS. A t thispoint a church steeple is visible twomiles to the west. I n the church plotis bur ied Ma r i e Dor ion, a n Ind iansquaw, heroine of the Astor overlandexpedition which reached Oregon in1811 a f te r suffering extreme hard-ship. The town is named after JosephGervais, a member of the Astor ex-pedition. The town of BROOKS lies 5miles beyond Gervais, and four milesfarther is CHEMAWA, a t which po in tthe railroad tracks div ide the cam-pus of a Government Training Schoolat which are educated Indians fromAlaska and the Pacific Northwest.

SALEM (Alt . 163 ft.) To San Fran-cisco 6 6 5 mi les. T o P o r t l a n d 5 3miles. Capital o f the State and seatof M a r i o n Coun t y, Sa lem i s t h esecond largest c i t y i n the State. I twas settled in 1834 by Jason Lee andother missionaries. To the west, asyou enter the ci ty, may be seen theCapitol and Supreme Cour t bui ld-ings. To the east, a mile distant, arethe state hospital and penitentiary.Founded in 1842 as the Oregon In -stitute, Wi l lamette Universi ty, old-est inst i tut ion o f higher learning inthe Pacific Northwest, is located inthe ci ty. Salem is located geograph-ically exactly midway between theequator and the north pole.

As y o u t r a v e l southward, M t .Jefferson and the peaks of the ThreeSisters are seen about 60 miles to theeast. I n ea r l y summer t h i s wholecountryside i s carpeted w i t h w i l dflowers. F r e q u e n t l y y o u c a n seebrightly-plumaged Chinese pheas-ants in the fields along the way.

Leaving Salem, y o u r t r a i n goesthrough the l i t t l e towns o f TURNERand MARION i n the midst o f a hay-growing country. A ha l f mile nor thof Mar ion, o n the east side o f thetrack is a tombstone erected to thememory of a cow—"Vive la France."This cow w o n f ive wor ld 's recordsand ove r $100,000 i n prizes. F i v emiles beyond M a r i o n i s JEFFERSON(Alt. 240 f t . ) , located on the nor thbank o f the Santiam River, namedfor a t r ibe o f Calapooyan Indians.

ALBANY. (A l t . 213 ft .) T h e seat ofLinn County, situated a t the junc-tion o f t he Wi l lamet te and Cala-pooya r ivers . I t i s a n impor tan tlumbering and agr icul tural center.South o f A lbany, the val ley opensup i n t o prair ie- l ike expanses. T h efields a r e larger. G r a i n a n d seedproduction dominates. Th i s area issometimes referred to as " the plainsof Lebanon." S ix miles beyond A l -bany i s t h e v i l l a g e o f TANGENT,a railroad term for the long stretchof straight track over which you areriding. Sou th o f here, a t intervalsare dome- l ike but tes , f o r m e d b yvolcanic upthrusts, once islands i nthe waters t h a t f i l l ed t h e va l l eyages ago. There are marine fossils inthe tops of the buttes, and bones ofmammoths a n d mastodons h a v ebeen found at their bases. Six milesbeyond Tangent is SHEDD, a smallsettlement. R is ing prominent ly o nthe east y o u can see Wa r d B u t t e(825 ft.), and Saddle Butte (646 ft.).South o f Shedd is marshland whichis blue in spring wi th the blooms o fcamas, Indian food-root. HALSEY, fivemiles south, is a shipping point forwool, grain, and seed crops.

HARRISBURG (Alt. 309 ft.) is a typi-cal r i v e r t own . F o r m a n y years a

The McKenzie River, one o f theworld's finest f ishing streams, f lowsinto the Willamette at Junction City.Fishermen come f rom a l l over t h eworld t o t r y the i r luck i n the M c -Kenzie's rap id waters. Anglers f ishfrom skiffs rowed b y r i ve r guides,who pul l against the making streamwhile t h e boats d r i f t s lowly d o w nthe whir l ing rapids, stern first.

EUGENE. (Alt. 426 ft.) To San Fran-cisco 594 miles. T o Por t land 124miles. T h e seat o f Lane Coun t y,Eugene is the th i rd largest c i t y i nthe State and a shipping point fo rmanufactured lumber and farm prod-ucts. Here arelocated the Universityof Oregon and the Northwest Chris-tian College. The Wil lamette Rivercurves around the northwest sectionof the c i ty, 'and to the east rise thefoothills o f the Cascades, w i t h themisty summits o f the Coast Rangeto the west. A branch l ine extendswestward from Eugene, crossing theCoast Range and following SiuslawRiver to Cushman, near i ts mouth,thence south t o Coos B a y o n t h eOregon coast, 122 miles from Eugene.

Eugene is also the northern junc-tion point of the Cascade and Siski-you Lines o f the Shasta Route, theCascade L i n e t u r n i n g easter ly t oskirt the western slopes of the Cas-cade Range, and the Siskiyou L ineturning westerly to run through theUmpqua and Rogue R iver Val leysand thence over the Siskiyou Moun-tains t o B lack Butte, Cal i f . , wherethe t w o l ines j o i n again. OVER THE CASCADESLeaving Eugene, y o u r t r a i n be-

gins t h e ascen t o f t h e CascadeMountains. For the next 87 miles i tgradually cl imbs unt i l , a t CascadeSummit, an elevation of 4,840 feet isreached. T h e coun t r y i s ruggedlydramatic. Mounta ins , p i led rangeupon range, r i se a b o u t y o u , t h ehighest only misty blue forms in thedistance. On the south side o f thetrain the Middle Fork of the Willam-ette rushes down to the val ley. U pand up you climb, now close to theriver, now through virgin forest withtrees on either side, now clinging tothe s ide o f a c l i f f . A n occasionalclearing reveals a lonely farm house.For more than 60 miles t he routeroughly parallels the trail over whichthe immigrants toiled on the last lapof their journey into the Wil lametteValley a century ago.

From Eugene the south bank o fthe W i l l a m e t t e i s fo l l owed f o r 4miles to Springfield, where the riveris crossed and left. Five miles beyondSpringfield y o u r t r a i n reaches t h enorth bank o f the M idd le F o r k o fthe Wil lamette which i t fol lows forthe next 32 miles. SPRINGFIELD ( A l t .457 ft.), is an industrial and lumber-ing center. Leaving Springfield, youenter the foothi l ls o f the Cascadesand the open val ley begins to closein. F o r the 14xt 16 miles the t ra inpasses through rol l ing country w i thsome agriculture and an occasionallumber mill. Just south of LOWELL (Alt.741 f t . ) t o the west is constructionon Lookout Dam, a part of the Wil-lamette ValleY flood control project.Building of dam will cause relocationof 22 miles of Southern Pacific track,scheduled to be completed in 1951--52. Tracks wil l cross to west side ofriver a t JASPER, V A mi les south o fSpringfield and follow west bank forapproximately 20 miles, recrossingto east side a t ARMET, just nor th ofWESTFIR (Alt. 1,108 f t . ) s i te o f hugelumber mills. Your train crosses theNor th Fork of the Wil lamette Riverat Westfir and leaves i t behind.

Tw o m i l e s b e y o n d W e s t f i r i sOAKRIDGE (Al t . 1,206 ft .) , named forthe oak trees nearby, and site o f alarge, modern lumber mil l .

McCREDIE SPRINGS (A l t . 2,076 ft .) ,11 miles beyond Oakridge, is a pop-ular Oregon health resort, centeredabout m inera l spr ings. The re arenumerous mounta in t ra i ls and f inefishing here. Abou t five miles southof McCred ie Spr ings, y o u r t r a i ncrosses Salt Creek, makes a hairpinturn and follows a northwesterly di-rection for f ive miles, then turns assharply again t o resume i t s south-easterly course in its gradual ascentof the canyon's western wal l to theSummit of the Cascade Range.

CASCADE SUMMIT. (A l t . 4,840 f t . )Thir ty-three miles beyond McCredieSprings, on emerging from a tunnel,you see beautiful Odell Lake at thesummit o f the Cascades. F o r f ou rmiles you fol low the south shore o fthe lake, w i t h del ight fu l v is tas o fthis magnificent body o f water, i t spine-covered shores, a n d M a i d e nPeak (7,811 f t . ) a t i ts background.Odell Lake, a summer resort, is fivemiles long and three miles wide, andits depth (2,000 feet in places) givesi t i ts wonderful blue color.

Also in this region are other moun-tain lakes easily accessible f rom theCascade L i ne , i nc l ud ing S u m m i tLake, Crescent Lake, and DiamondLake. This great region is a famousattraction for campers, hunters, andfishermen. F r o m ODELL LAKE ( A l t .4,844 ft.) a number of beautiful tow-ering peaks are silhouetted againstthe sky—Maiden Peak, Odell But te(7,000 f t . ) , M a k l a k s M o u n t a i n(6,990 f t . ) , Royce Mounta in (6,186ft.), M t . Yoran (7,132 ft.), LakeviewMountain (7,063 f t . ) .

Three miles beyond Lake Odell isCRESCENT LAKE (Al t . 4,779 f t . ) . T h elake, one-half mile from the station,is a popular summer resort, notedfor i ts fine fishing. F o u r miles fromCrescent Lake is UMLI (Alt. 4,775 ft.),just south of which rugged DiamondPeak (8,750 f t . ) is seen to the west.CHEMULT (Al t . 4,761 f t . ) was named

for an Ind ian chief. There is a sk icourse west of the town. Eleven milesbeyond C h e m u l t i s YAMSAY ( A l t .4,651 ft .) . You are now in the Klam-ath I n d i a n Reservation. Sou th o fhere the western skyl ine is brokenby jagged M t . Thielsen (9,178 f t . ) ,and M t . Scot t (9,128 f t . ) . Betweenthese two landmarks can be seen theremains of Mt . Mazama, which nowforms the r im o f Crater Lake. Th islake lies in the center o f an ext inctvolcano 6,177 feet above sea level.I t i s six mi les long and fou r mileswide, w i t h precipitous wal ls r is ing1,000 feet f rom water's edge to r im.Aside f r om i t s great scenic at t rac-tions, Crater Lake, located in CraterLake Nat iona l Park , i s recognizedas one o f the great natural wondersof the world.

Twenty- two miles south o f Yam-say, a t KIRK ( A l t . 4,533 f t . ) , yourtrain crosses the Wi l l iamson R i ve rand follows its east bank for the next15 miles. CHILOQUIN (A l t . 4,190 f t . ) ,fourteen miles south of Ki rk , an In-dian se t t l ement o n t h e K l a m a t hReservation, bears the English ver-sion o f an Ind ian name. A t MODOCPOINT ( A l t . 4 ,154 f t . ) y o u r t r a i nreaches the eastern shore o f UpperKlamath Lake, which i t follows for18 miles. Across the lake to the westyou can see the sharp peak o f M t .McLoughl in (9,760 f t . ) against thesky. Upper Klamath Lake is 8 mileswide and 40 miles long, one o f thelargest bodies of fresh water west ofthe Rockies, and the remains o f anancient in land sea. Interest ing arethe snow-white pelicans, which areprotected by law and live on the lakein large numbers. Eight miles beyondModoc Point is ALGOMA (A l t . 4,155ft.) named f o r a lumber company,and ten miles farther is the c i ty o fKlamath Falls, a lumbering center.

KLAMATH FALLS. (Al t . 4,105 ft.) ToSan Francisco, 400 miles. To Por t -land, 318 miles. A gateway to LavaBeds National Monument and Cra-ter Lake National Park. Auto stagesleave here for the park dai ly duringthe summer K lamath Falls, situatedon the L ink River near the southern

Five miles beyond Ta lent is ASH-LAND (Al t . 1,874 ft.), at the southernend o f the Rogue River Val ley andbisected by Bear Creek. The city liesat the base of Ashland Peak (2,535 ft.)and its twin peak, M t . Wagner. Oneof the State's three Normal Schoolsis located here. Ashland is noted forits mineral springs with waters highlyvalued for their curative properties.L i th ia and other mineral waters arepiped into a natural park of unusualbeauty, w i th in the ci ty l imits.
