NCRD 20th Anniversary

NCRD celebrated its 20th anniversary at a

celebration on June 24. There was a free

BBQ and refreshments, an old-fashioned

popcorn wagon, a TaeKwon Do

demonstration, and music by the Rhythm

Method. Since the original schoolhouse was

built in 1920, a “roaring 20’s’ theme

provided for some period costumes and a

dance routine by Rosa Erlebach and Renee

Delight La Torre.

Board Chair Jack Bloom provided the

welcome and presented a plaque honoring

the founders of NCRD in 1997. Accepting on

behalf of the founders was Barbara McCann,

who highlighted the efforts to establish the

district. County Commissioner David

Yamamoto talked about the many programs

and services offered. NCRD appreciates his

support, as well as the estimated 200 people

who braved 90 degree temperatures to

Volunteers Wanted!

The Friends of NCRD are looking for

volunteers and/or board members. Please

contact Linda Makohon at

[email protected].

The NCRD Performing Arts Center is looking

for volunteers to learn how to assist with

lighting or sound system operation for

performances. Our venue has a computer-

based lighting system used in plays and

concerts, and also a 7-channel sound system

with many technical requirements. We

provide the training and volunteers will

learn some fascinating new skills, as well as

get to see performances for free, meet

performers and musicians, and help produce

quality entertainment. Contact Mary Moran

at [email protected].

NEW! Phone Number & WI-FI

All incoming calls are toll-free. This change was part of a project which

also brought WI-FI throughout the building, in response to requests from

our patrons. The project required completely new conduit and wiring as

well as strategically placed hardware.

NCRD Receives $3,500 Grant

NCRD has received a grant for $3,500

from Tillamook Coast (Tillamook County

Economic Development Council). The

grant will be used to promote off-season

tourism in the North County by

marketing the new NCRD winter music

festival, “Winterfest Unplugged”, to be

held in our Performing Arts Center. The

festival will start Friday, February 2, 2018

and conclude Sunday, February 4, 2018.

Four outstanding musical acts have

already been booked for the festival, and

feature regional, national, and even

internationally-known names. The

genres include Celtic, blues, rock, and

jazz. A complete festival guide will be

published and also included in the fall

newsletter, so this is a “save the date”

notice. If you would like to participate as

a sponsor of a performance, you will

receive recognition in all of our

published materials. Thanks to our first

sponsor, Sunset Vacation Rentals, for

providing lodging for one of the bands.

The restoration project for Rex Champ Field has been

completed. The field has been in use 3-4 days per week

for the Adult Co-ed Softball League and is also available

to rent for private events. Contact the Welcome Center

at 855.444.6273 to reserve the field.

NCRD Performing Arts Center will host 3 Leg Torso

on Saturday, October 14, 7:30 pm. This amazing

band recently performed at the Astoria Music

Festival and we are thrilled to bring them here.

Tickets are available at www.tickettomato.com or

at the door.

3 Leg Torso creates charming, elegant and daring

modern chamber pop music infused with equal

parts tradition and innovation. Since the

ensemble's humble start in 1996 with spontaneous

street performances -- called “Meestering” by co-

founders Béla Balogh and Courtney Von Drehle --

they have been featured on National Public Radio's

All Things Considered and at the San Luis Obispo

Mozart Festival, successfully toured the east and

west coasts, released four CDs (two with New York

spoken-word artist, NPR contributor and Duplex

Planet founder David Greenberger), composed and

recorded film and documentary scores as well as

licensing music for film and television both in the

US and internationally, written new evening-length

works commissioned by the Portland Institute of

Contemporary Art (PICA) and performed both their

original compositions and their arrangements of

traditional music with several symphony

orchestras.

Influenced

by tango,

Eastern

European

folk and

other world

music

traditions,

their cosmopolitan musical style embraces wit and

humor within thoughtful, uncommon and beautiful

musical arrangements.

Our entire upper parking lot has undergone a

complete renovation, both functionally and

aesthetically. The main problem was water

drainage that flowed toward the building rather

than away from it. This has resulted in numerous

problems over the years when drains would get

plugged and water actually flowed into the

building. One staff described it as “a waterfall in

the boiler room”.

The NCRD Capital Improvement Committee had

prioritized this major project and met several times

to update the planning. Architect Jim Fanjoy with

Brittell Architecture and Tim Wines of PLS

Engineering designed the new parking lot to both

resolve the drainage problem and to provide an

entirely new and improved entry to the building.

Their design, which began in 2016 but was revised

and finished in February 2017, was used in a

Request for Proposals published in March.

The winning bidder was Chris Dials Construction,

based in Tillamook, and the contract was awarded

April 25. Work began May 15, and included

mobilization; demolition; a new 9-foot retaining

wall; new concrete stairs, sidewalks, and curbs;

storm sewer; railings and guards; an attractive new

fuel tank structure; stamped concrete entry;

grading; paving; and landscaping. The design

included provision for adding an entry structure

over the front door as an option in the future.

Overall, this project is seen as a very successful

investment in the future of our beautiful and

historic 1920 building. Thanks to all who have

participated and to our many patrons for their

patience during construction.

Youth Sports Guests We had the pleasure and great opportunity for

professional youth sports trainers to come out

to Rex Champ field and work with the kids to

better their skills for the future.

Julio Lara and Roberto held a soccer clinic with

20 youth soccer players on Saturday, June 3.

Julio and Roberto are both prestigious soccer

trainers from the greater Portland

area. They assist youth coaching for Portland

Timbers, Mount Hood and Clackamas youth

among others. The kids enjoyed the

opportunity to learn from the best.

In addition, Mike Wantland, hitting coach for

NKN High School, has volunteered to work with

our youth on pitching as well as hitting. Mike

has a very extensive background in baseball. He

spent 13 years coaching at Portland State (in

1984 they were the North Pac 10 Champions)

and 11 years coaching in various high schools in

the greater Portland area (winning 3 state

championships).

NCRD Buys Lot On June 23 NCRD closed on the purchase of the property across the street from the lower parking lot, 12920 B Street. There is a house on the property, which has been vacant for several years and needs a lot of work including electrical, plumbing, cabinetry, appliances, landscaping and so on. The house is being evaluated now for feasibility to use as a rental. The purchase was made to provide another option

for possible parking when enough funds are raised

to build our new swimming pool, which would be

built in the lower parking lot and eliminate a

majority of the parking spaces. The new pool is

estimated to be at least several years away, and a

capital campaign plan is now in the development

stage. More details will follow in the next

newsletter, including renderings of the new pool

itself.

2017 Mudd Nick Art Camp Mudd Nick Foundation has provided a free week of Art Camp to our community kiddos for over 15 years… close to 1000 spaces have been filled. Our campers turn into camp helpers, and this year we had 3 returning campers helping out as part of their senior project. Thank you NCRD for hosting us all these years.

2017 Summer Day Camps During the summer season, NCRD hosts several week-long day camps: Forest to the Sea, Emergency Preparedness, Gardening & Cooking and Theatre. Thanks to our partners, Mudd Nick Foundation and Nehalem Bay United Methodist Church, for your support. And a special thanks to each camp director for your expertise and dedication in sharing your knowledge.

This photo was taken in 1931, and recently restored in a beautiful 24 x 36 inch print which now hangs in the “Schoolhouse” Room. Next to the photo is space for names and comments about students who may be recognized, and many have relatives and descendants still living in the area. All are welcome to visit and check out the photo and add names so we can preserve the history of this historic building.
