Confirmation Coordinator’s Reflection
This week’s readings are centered around prayer and the Lord’s recep vity to it. Life is a journey filled with twists and turns, as well as the highs and lows. At mes, it’s difficult to keep up with everything that is being thrown at us… and yet, God is not deaf to our cries nor our shouts, as we see through the course of these readings. Though it can feel as though He is deaf at mes, these readings assure us that He always hears us.
Seeing that God isn’t deaf to us... is it possible that we might be deaf to Him? Could it be that He does answer us, but we don’t hear that answer because we make ourselves deaf? It can be hard to hear an answer to prayers, if one isn’t humble enough to listen. Or is it possible that we unnecessarily fill our prayers like the Pharisee? “O God, I thank you that I am not like the rest of humanity…”
Ask yourself the following ques ons when you pray, especially during mass: How o en do you find yourself being distracted by another person...by how they dress, act or portray themselves? Do you find yourself making comparisons? Do you find yourself cri quing them? Am I giving God the due respect and a en on or am I giving it to myself and my own thoughts?
It’s one thing to fraternally correct another person on their dress, speech and a tude, as it should reflect a certain amount of respect for God, and should always be done with sensi vity and love. However, there is a point when fraternal correc on is no longer present and becomes disrespect toward others. We forget about the log in our own eye as we hyperfixate on the splinter in our brother’s. Humility is a virtue that can be o en forgo en, but is cri cal to spiritual development. Whether we are in the mass or just praying in the chapel, it is important to humble ourselves so that we can see ourselves as we are and in turn see others in the same way. The virtue of Humility in prayer is what we see in the tax collector from today’s Gospel. “...the tax collector stood off at a distance and would not even raise his eyes to heaven but beat his breast and prayed, 'O God, be merciful to me a sinner.'” O God, be merciful to me a sinner. Just repeat that phrase aloud to yourself, “O God, be merciful to me a sinner”. What do you feel when those words leave your lips? Does it feel a li le strange? Have you ever spoken to God in prayer in this way?
We see that the Tax Collector doesn’t allow himself to be sidetracked by any thoughts that would distract him from his conversa on with God. So let us take some me this week to open our conversa on with God through the use of this prayer or a tude seen from the tax collector in his simplicity: O God, be merciful to me a sinner. May we also ask for the intercession of St. John Paul the Great this week, and may we learn to respond to God’s voice as we ought and not as we want as he had.

Stop by the back of the church today to sign a le er or write a postcard to your Senator(s) and Congressman to ask them to form a circle of protec on around programs for hungry and poor people in the upcoming budget decisions. We will mail them for you, or you can take the materials home and write your le er there.
Ma hew: The King and His Kingdom
The Tuesday Evening Bible Study will be star ng a new study tled Ma hew: The King and His Kingdom. The book of Ma hew brings the history of Christ to life. We see Jesus as the awaited Messiah who fulfills the promises and prophecies of the Old Testament, establishes the New Law, and inaugurates the kingdom of heaven. Ma hew: The King and His Kingdom, a twenty‐four‐part Bible study, explores how Jesus is challenging and empowering us to a new level of holiness and shows how we must be thoroughly immersed in the kingdom of heaven on earth, the Church, to live it.
St. Agnes Parish will begin Ma hew: The King and His Kingdom on November 12 at 7pm in Cauchi Hall. Par cipants will meet once a week to view an engaging video presenta on followed by a me of group discussion and fellowship. We welcome drop‐ ins, so feel free to come even if you are not ready to commit to the en re study or just wan ng to check it out.

BOOK OF REMEMBRANCE
The Book of Remembrance will be in the church during the month of October. Parishioners are invited to enter the names of their loved ones to be remembered on All Souls Day and the Mass of Remembrance, which is scheduled for Saturday, November 2, at 10:00 a.m.

October is the month of the Holy Rosary. Please arrive at the weekend Masses at least 5 minutes early to join the congrega on in praying a decade of the Holy Rosary before Mass begins.

CARONDELET HIGH SCHOOL
OPEN HOUSE—Carondelet High School’s Open House for interested 6th, 7th and 8th grade girls and their parents/ guardians will be held on Sunday, November 17th, from 1‐3 p.m. at 1133 Winton Drive (corner of Treat Blvd.) in Concord. QUEEN OF HEAVEN VIGIL OF LIGHT All Souls Remembrance Day
Friday, November 1, 6:30 p.m.— Three‐day candlelight vigil begins at Queen of Heaven Cemetery. The cemetery will be open late, allowing families the opportunity to place candles on graves and enjoy a cemetery full of light at night. Call 925‐932‐0900 to reserve your free candle.

St. Agnes Parishioners—St. Agnes School PACE Board would like to thank you for your con nued support at our monthly dine‐outs. We received $550 from September’s Dine Out at Skipolini’s in Clayton, and $88 from our Dine Out at BJ’s in October. Please come join us at our next dine out on November 6th at Jack’s Urban Eats located in the Orchards shopping center at the corner of Ygnacio Valley Road and Oak Grove Road. Flyers are available at the Welcome Table and on the school website.

St. Agnes PACE Board invites all the parishioners of St. Agnes to our BBQ Dinner and Bingo night on Friday, November 15th, from 6:30‐9:00 p.m. in the Church Hall.

RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD
Today’s readings invite us into prayer, into rela onship with God. Because rela onships feel more natural when we know one another well, Sirach encourages us to know God be er. In his wisdom, Sirach tells us what God is like: fair, open‐minded, compassionate, and a en ve. “The Lord will not delay,” he says. Knowing that God’s help comes right on me, whenever we need it, calms our hearts and helps us trust the Lord. In his second Le er to Timothy, Saint Paul demonstrates his own trust in God. Despite the grueling struggles Saint Paul has faced because of his Chris an faith, he praises the Lord for rescuing him me and again. Today’s Gospel draws us close to Jesus too, revealing his special love for the poor and humble.
